NEW MOTORS AND WHEELS Get your project off to the right start with this wheel, which is designed to ‘push fit’ onto our matching 90RPM Geared Hobby Motor that runs off a voltage of 3V to 6V. The wheels are 68mm in diameter, they have a solid plastic rim and rubber treaded tyres. A perfect set of motors and wheels for building your own buggy.

ARDUINO ACCESSORIES BASIC 16x2 CHARACTER LCD

ARDUINO AND BREADBOARD HOLDER

This is a 16 character by 2 line display that runs at 3.3V. It uses the ST7066/HD44780 parallel interface - the interface code is widely available for many different controllers and systems.

A prototyping holder for a breadboard and any other board that has the Arduino mounting holes such as the Arduino Uno, RedBoard, The Leonardo and FEZ Panda.

BREADBOARD WITH BINDING POSTS

JUMPER WIRES

This is a standard solderless breadboard with three binding posts, two power buses, and black aluminium plate backing. It works with a wide variety of wire gauges.

These Jumper Wires are 20cm in length and are sold in packs of 10, one of each colour. The M/F variety has a male connector on one end and female on the other. The M/M variety has male connectors on both ends.

TEACH FIRST, TEACH E-TEXTILES

@Kitronik - Feb 25 - 5.25am Just got on the train in Nottingham. Heading to London to deliver a days E-Textile training to Teach First teachers. It feels early!

The Teach First Training Day was held on Tuesday 25th February at Highgate School, London (all thanks to Andy Thompson, the school’s Head of D&T, and Joy Palmer from Teach First who organised the event). There were six Teach First teachers in total, all of whom undertook a short intensive teacher training program during the summer of 2013 and consequently started teaching in September. By the end of this year they will all be fully qualified teachers. What does ‘Teach First’ do? Teach First ‘find, train and support people to become brilliant teachers, inspiring the young people who need them the most’. To help in this mission, Kevin from Kitronik delivered an E-Textiles workshop

using products from our Electro-Fashion range. All of the teachers made their own E-Textiles circuit with Kevin’s guidance. Later in the day, Kevin trained three members of staff and one Highgate student in using the LilyPad products. Whereas the success of an E-Textile circuit made up of Electro-Fashion components depends mostly on sewing technique and the connection between the components, the ProtoSnap LilyPad Development Board focuses on programming (see page 9). www.teachfirst.org.uk


MORE E-TEXTILES NEWS E-TEXTILE PROJECTS BY NOTTINGHAM TRENT UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATES We had the pleasure of seeing and supporting a number of undergraduate E-Textiles projects from the initial designs right through to the final stages. We loved working with the students and are really impressed with the level of detail that went into each design. This dreamcatcherinspired dress is one of the projects that has been delicately finished with white sewable LEDs.

ELECTRO -FASHION LIGHT SENSORS

ELECTRO-FASHION FEATURES ON THE RASPBERRY JAMBOREE, MANCHESTER, GOODY BAG! The OCR Raspberry Jamboree, held at Manchester Central on 27th and 28th February 2014, was the second international convention sharing the educational potential of the Raspberry Pi™ computer. Raspberry Jamboree Party Bags, containing all kinds of useful Raspberry Pi accessories, were given out to the lucky visitors. The sewable circuit projects that featured on the Party Bags (using ElectroFashion products) were a massive hit!

LILYPAD VIBE BOARD

LILYPAD PROTOBOARD SMALL

Apply 5V and be shaken by this small, but powerful, vibration motor. It works great as a physical indicator without notifying anyone but the wearer.

This is a small board for prototyping through hole components with the LilyPad system. There are an array of pins all shorted together with 10mil traces. This allows for quick and easy prototyping all you have to do is cut the traces between the holes that you don't want connected!

PICK AND PLACE MACHINE Rather than manually picking surface mount components from a reel and placing them onto PCBs (which was the process for our Electro-Fashion Sewable PCB LEDs), we have invested in a Pick and Place Machine (P‘n’P Machine) to do all of the fiddly work for us. With this machine up and running, all that we

have to do is hit the ‘Start’ button and the P‘n’P Machine will perform this component placement for us. The P‘n’P Machine saves minutes, even hours, during a typical day in production and ensures that we have plenty of stock on our shelves.

Apply solder paste onto the PCB.

Once the components have been placed, send the PCB through the reflow oven to melt the solder paste.

Insert the PCB into the Pick and Place Machine and run the commands to place the components.

Allow to cool and test!
