Cruisin’ Gratiot – The Ultimate Nostalgia Ride with a Mission

Hearing the roar of classic car engines rolling down Gratiot Avenue begins Monday, June 13

th

and the joy riding doesn’t end until the clock

strikes midnight on Saturday, June 18th. A week full of family fun events and car shows are planned along the legendary avenue which has institutionalized “cruisin’ as the ultimate nostalgia trip and summer pastime. Cruisin’ Gratiot appropriately gives way to the honoring of our dad’s on Father’s Day, Sunday June 19th. We’ve all heard the stories of dad recalling hanging with his gang while riding in his cool car, how he courted mom by picking her up for a cruise down the “avenue”, how they stopped at places like Suzy Qs (now National Coney Island) and perhaps even how he tried to stretch his arm around her while parking at the drive-in movies. Vivid thoughts of Sunday afternoon family drives are favorite memories Detroiters from suburban and city neighborhoods all share. What better way to take in some quality time with dad than by watching the spectacle of hundreds of vintage and hot rod cars that define the innocence and adventure of his era’s youth? This is the thirteenth year the Cruisin’ Gratiot event has been hosted in Eastpointe. Gratiot Avenue is the apex of a weeklong celebration of car shows, contests and family events which Eastsiders regard as a kick-off to hot summertime fun. Most don’t realize that Cruisin’ Gratiot is a non-profit organization which makes a difference in the lives of many local people by donating funds raised by the cruise events to area charities, one of which is Champions for Life Kids Camp. By attending any events you’re MAKING A DIFFERENCE and touching the hearts of many local families. In this tough economy, it takes a village now more than ever to raise a child. The Cruisin’ Gratiot sponsors have made this event a mission to keep area charities doing the good work they need to make life better for area residents. The economy made fundraising for this year’s cruise a challenge but supporters of the event rallied to make certain this year remained a free fun community event. Area supporters of the cruise, such as Cloverleaf Pizza put a “full throttle push” on to creatively raise

The Bay-Rama Festival is managed and executed by the Bay-Rama Committee which is proud to have been creating forty seven years of fun memories for area residents while giving generously to the community, donating funds raised from this event to recently expand the city’s lake-front park. This generous improvement project includes a new play structure for the children, restrooms, picnic tables, a pavilion and boat dock in the park. Beyond these obvious enrichments to the City of New Baltimore, the Bay-Rama Committee provides scholarships to graduating seniors from the festival proceeds. Lastly, it’s this committee which hosts the annual New Baltimore Christmas tree lighting ceremony yearly. Thank you Bay-Rama Committee for caring about the City of New Baltimore!
