This expansion was to include an addition of 90,000 square feet of factory space as well as a re-imagining of the building faรงade and landscape.

Housing Systems Studio and Tianjin University Workshop Location: Tianjin, China Supervised by: Claudia Wigger and Craig Borum, University of Michigan Partners: Loraine Leung and Megan Christian Provoked by the rapid rise of the array of towers directly to the south of the now half-demolished hutong near the old city center, this high-rise comples responds to both the spatial redundancies, tepid communal relationships, and rigid hierarchies embedded in these typical responses to the question of density in Tianjin. While the attitude of developers and government planning officials might operate under the assumption that the hutong is structurally outmoded and spatially antithetical to the needs of the burgeoning urban population, the residents of the hutong have actually been developing solutions to the problem of densification within their communities for decades in the form of a lifestyle based on efficient communal use of amenities and informal occupation of public street space. This lifestyle not only answered the problem of increased density, but offered a vibrant social space as part of the solution.


The proposed complex, a continuously knit framework , supports the communal social lifestyle observed in the current hutong neighborhoods. The primary steel frame structural system emphasizes the importance of flexibility and puts the building proper in the background in service of the true informal occupation of its corridors and private spaces. The window wall system and colored mesh shading panels across the south faรงade give the complex a dissolved appearance, in contrast to the opposing vertical masses opposite.

The interior spaces take the form of winding communal corridors with subtle thresholds between private, semi-private, and public spaces. Amenities have been dissolved from large, unapproachable blocks of building mass into smaller ‘microamenities’ scattered throughout the interior space, so as to ensure that no one resident is far from any of their needs. In direct opposition to the typical highrise unit plan which would feature redundant living space elements such as kitchens, dining, or office rooms, these private spaces have been pulled out of the units and congealed into communal amenities located strategically within the space of each tower unit.

Network for the Re-Appropriation of Hydrologic Resources Ciudad JuĂĄrez, Chihuaua, Mexico and El Paso, TX, United States Location: Supervised by: Ekaterina Velikov, University of Michigan Featured in the Yale School of Architecture gallery, the Architekturforum Aedes, Berlin, and Two Sides of the Border: Reimagining the Region by Lars Muller Publishers The Rio Grande has become severely diminished in the region due to heavy growth of agriculture, surface water appropriation battles between states, and channelization. Regulations governing the use of water tend to fall within geopolitical lines, failing to recognize the greater watershed. In fact, the wall and other infrastructural elements separating El Paso from Ciudad Juarez further exacerbate ecological issues by physically bifurcating the watershed. The Network for the Re-Appropriation of Hydrologic Byproducts (NRAHB) is a research institute that promotes public knowledge of water treatment technology as is relates to the Rio Grande watershed. Rather than re-affirming the political state of the international border, NRAHB seeks to redefine the region as an integrated, transnational ecology.

A responsive international installation which constantly records and replays sound and movement represents the historic flow of the Rio Grande across the disputed Chamizal territory. Participants immerse themselves in a vague shroud of fog are exposed to signals triggered upstream by users at other sites. These signals are expressed by field audio and light emissions.

Along with three ancient cities, Detroit is featured as a potential site for the deployment of urban archaeological methods for study. Additionally, the Oakland Avenue Urban Farm contributed interviews documented in several video shorts available for viewing in the exhibit. Their position as a community-building initiative responding to the drastic decline in population of the historically neglected north end neighborhood made the site a focal point for understanding the trajectory of Detroit’s development. As a representation of the short but rich history of the neighborhood, a 500 lb. soil core was taken from the farm for display, revealing the geological history and artifacts of the explosive growth of the city.


From Exhibit Website: Notion was a harbor city on the west coast of Turkey, dramatically situated on two seaside promontories. It was founded in the 3rd century BC, when the population of an older town relocated to a new, fortified settlement on this strategic site. Surprisingly, the new city was itself largely abandoned only a few hundred years later, in the 1st century AD. (Image shown is a re-construction produced by Kevin Raley, Karen Toomasian, and Dan Tish from various imagery and point cloud modeling provided by the archaeological team, in support of several exhibit pieces.)


TEMPLE Magnetic gradiometry from the archaeological dig team suggests a colonnade surrounding a simple temple which consists of a naos and opisthodomos space.

PASTAS STYLE HOUSING BLOCK Street-facing spaces were used as artisan workshops. Opposite the courtyard were double-story housing masses for families. On blocks with steep slopes, shop spaces could have been built underneath the courtyard space.

PERISTYLE HOUSING BLOCK Upper class neighborhoods, near civic landmarks like the agora or the theater, were believed to be prominently peristyle housing. Double story wings surround larger courtyards, and often a single home would feature multiple courtyards covering an entire block.

The newly renovated Water Wheel Building in Northville was originally a valve plant, part of Henry Ford’s Village Industries along the River Rouge. The eponymous water wheel remained in disrepair, and the parts remaining of the original steel frame and buckets had become severely rusted. KPR Design was hired to survey the remains of the existing wheel, research the documents used for the original design, and prepare a set of documents to be used by a steel fabricator to replace the original wheel.
