Today, we'll continue with some stated and unstated design practices in Blizzard games, taking our cue from Gamasutra's recent interview with Kevin Martens and Julian Love from the Diablo III team. It's good to go beyond the sales numbers or price cuts or any of the ancillary outcomes of the games business to look at something more important: what is it that makes some games so much better than others. QA people were encouraged to criticize products and share ideas, and eventually the QA guys would become assistant producers or product managers and move up from there. They had started where they heard directly from customers (QA guys worked on customer support as well), and they carried that forward into their careers and when the company got so large and successful that people at the bottom couldn't contribute anymore, the company started to go downhill This year's Blizzcon had plenty of exciting news and events going on, including tons of new information on their new free to play game, Hearthstone. For those that do not already know, Heroes of the Storm is Blizzard Entertainment's upcoming free to play MOBA (Multiplayer online battle arena) game. It's also worth mentioning that many of the subscribers that were lost were located in the East, in countries such as China and South Korea. Whether or not this has anything to do with the subscriber loss is up for debate. Although there are several reasons for this current loss, it's important to remember that World of Warcraft has been steadily losing subscribers for the past year, and this latest subscriber loss could just be par for the course.
