YEOMANS Burrow Hill Ward

FOR SOUTH SOMERSET DISTRICT COUNCIL ELECTIONS

ACTION FOR YOU ALL YEAR ROUND

Derek Yeomans is a retired Sea Captain who has served in the Merchant Navy, the Fleet Air Arm, the Royal Air Force, and, for the last 30 years before retirement, in the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. He holds two degrees and a diploma in Pollution Control and Environmental Management, from the Open University, and is deeply committed to the maintenance and care of the environment and ecological balance. He has served on South Somerset District Council since 1999, and also represents the ward as County Councillor for Langport. Derek dislikes waste of all kinds, and, as chairman of the Somerset Waste Partnership, has overseen the implementation of the Waste Plan, which includes the introduction of the additional kerbside collection of cardboard and plastics. He works constantly towards the maximisation of Reuse Recycling Composting, while at the same time, recognising that that there will be about 40% of household and commercial waste that will still require disposal. New and innovative technologies will have to be used to reduce the volume being tipped into the levels of the Somerset Countryside. This, he recognises, will be the next challenge for the future inhabitants of this lovely area. Derek has worked hard to ensure that the area receives its fair share of police resources and cover. He also works to ensure that the local roads are maintained and repaired as soon as possible. He strongly supports local planning decisions where they are sensible, and well considered, especially where there are needs for Farmers to diversify. His present and future aims are:To ensure that Somerset does not disappear under a mountain of garbage over the next 20 years, because landfill is not sustainable. That the Council spending in South Somerset is kept under strict control and continual scrutiny and concentrates on Needs not Wants, thus enabling firm control of future Council Tax increases. To support the work of Police Beat Managers especially to make an impact on youth crime and misbehaviour To reduce the dependence on Consultants where, adequate experience is available within the District Council and so reduce the burden on local taxpayers. •
