The KEVIN GUEST HOUSE STORY Kevin Guest House is America’s first independent healthcare hospitality house. Since 1972, we have provided a comfortable and supportive home-away-from-home for patients and families traveling to receive state of the art health care and treatment in Buffalo area hospitals and medical centers. Three homes, comprising eleven bedrooms, five bathrooms and various dining and living common areas, provide sanctuary for those in need of affordable shelter during medical crises. Over 56,000 guests have stayed at Kevin Guest House since its inception, mostly originating from Western New York, but also including guests from 49 states, Canada, and eleven other countries. Kevin Guest House was founded by Claudia and Cyril Garvey, whose son, Kevin Garvey, passed away in January 1972 at the age of 13 after an eighteen month fight against leukemia. During his treatment at Roswell Park Memorial Hospital, the Garveys became aware of many other families, traveling for the care of a child, that were unable to find affordable lodging. Shortly before Kevin’s death, Mr. and Mrs. Garvey purchased the property located at 782 Ellicott Street, formed a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and with the help of Roswell Park, renovated the house with the support of volunteers and donations from the community. Kevin Guest House welcomed their first guest on July 26, 1972; just six months after Kevin lost his battle. In addition to our main house, we offer four transplant recovery apartments, the only of their kind in Buffalo, for patients and their caregivers. These fully functional apartments allow blood & marrow and other transplant patients an environmentally safe place to recover that is within the required distance to their medical facility. In many cases these patients are required to stay 100 days or more within 30 minutes of their medical facility for monitoring and testing. With the help of our generous community of donors and supporters, we are able to continue our mission of serving those in need.

O U R GU ES T S T H A N K Y O U !

Finding comfort amid the crisis JOYCE LAWSON

She walked into the house with big “hellos” for everyone. Not that Joyce Lawson particularly wanted to be back at Kevin Guest House. A return to the grand Victorian on Ellicott Street meant that her husband, Craig, was back at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center facing more complications from his treatment for bladder cancer. But if she had to be back in Buffalo, if she had to deal medical complications, she was at least in a place that felt like home. “When I came back and walked in the door, someone greeted me by my first name and said, ‘Oh, come on in, Joyce.’ In this huge complex of 17,000 workers among the complex of three hospitals, it’s amazing that people know your name and make you feel so welcomed,” she said. “It really is just such a wonderful thing that the parents of Kevin did and started back in 1972.” The couple from Norwich, N.Y., outside of Binghamton, came to Buffalo seeking a second opinion after Craig was diagnosed with bladder cancer. “When we heard it for the first time in Binghamton, it was all at once,” Joyce said. “He has bladder cancer. He needs to have his bladder removed. All in one day within 10 minutes. That was a lot. We had heard about Roswell from friends of many years ago. I just felt the reputation out here was excellent. We thought this was the place to come. “It’s just such an amazing opportunity for people to have this oasis among all the concerns and the stress of other things that are going on in one’s life,” she said. “This is a place, it’s so much better than a hotel room because you have the interaction of people that are going through similar experiences or you learn that the things you’re going through aren’t half as bad as what somebody else is going through.”
