EDM - Exactly What Does This Mean? Electrical Discharge Machining is often shortened to EDM. Machining metal in a very precise and accurate way is the basis of this technique. When producing a part or other piece that needs to have extremely precise tolerances and would otherwise be impossible to make, EDM is used. As a result, EDM machines and parts are extremely precise and very specific pieces of equipment. Electrical Discharge Machining works extremely well with any metal that conducts electricity. Large quantities of electricity are discharged in a specific way so that the metal is eroded to a design. Producing parts for machines, intricate designs or extremely small gears that are challenging to make otherwise are a few of the uses of this process. There are three types of EDM: RAM EDM, Drill EDM, and Wire EDM. RAM EDM consists of an electrode made from graphite that is thrust into the piece of metal that is being worked on and is the oldest type of this machining technique. This results in a cavity in which the electrode is pushed into the metal. While it is largely used to make indentations and cavities, it can also be used to create holes entirely through the piece of metal or particular types of geometry. Drill EDM uses revolving concentric electrodes to drill right through a piece of metal. This technique is just like a standard drilling process, however the hardness of the material doesn't factor in. The finished work is also far more precise and clean than what a drill press is capable of. These holes can be as small as .006 inches, allowing for a multitude of uses like aerospace and medical equipment. Finally, Wire EDM is a small wire electrode that travels through or around the metal that is being handled. Oftentimes, a drill EDM will be used to create a hole for the wire, and then the wire is used to create the geometry of the piece itself. These wires are regulated by very precise computers and can make exceptionally intricate pieces. EDM is usually used when a precision piece of metal is needed, either as part of a larger machine or as a piece of practical metal all on its own. The resulting pieces are very durable and useful in many circumstances since EDM works extremely well on incredibly hard materials. The aeronautics industry specifically makes great use of EDM for both its precision and the longevity of the pieces produced. EDM occurs under water which is another interesting piece of the process. This may not seem that beneficial, but certain flammable or explosive materials can be used with EDM while other technologies might set it alight or cause it to explode. Due to the filtering system that is used, there is a decreased risk of fumes and particles leaking out into the air which reduces risk of exposure for those performing the machining work. The parts they need may need to be replaced routinely since EDM machines are precise devices. EDM parts, especially the wires used in wire EDM, can be acquired and replaced relatively cheaply, making the entire process not only accurate, but relatively inexpensive for the products that are being made.
