Howdy Y’all, In southern Texas, I do some of my best thinking on summer afternoons when it is too hot to do anything else. As discussed in our membership meeting at the Coors Challenge, I’ve been spending a lot of time lately thinking about our rider rating system and how it affects the nature of our membership and competitions. Over the last few months, the USTPA Board of Directors and Executive Committee have had numerous discussions regarding the need for a rating system that includes an opportunity for those who are true beginners to our sports. Many of us feel that the “true novice” has a hard time competing as a “1” at our National Production Shows. In addition, we need to critique the accuracy of how many of our current members are rated. As in any sport with varying levels of competition, the integrity of our events is only as good as our ability to accurately access our competitors’ abilities. Rating riders objectively at a national level continues to be one of the most contended issues in the USTPA and is a priority as we begin rating evaluations for the 2014 show year. Your volunteer leaders are currently discussing the best solutions for these areas of concern but we need your input in order to be able to best represent our membership. I hope you will take the time this month to contact your Directors and tell them your ideas and concerns regarding ratings and beginner riders (their contact information is on page 32 for your reference). Your opinion is appreciated, but as always, your involvement is even better. Volunteering at a show, Regional Finals, the World Championship or serving in a volunteer leadership position demonstrates not only your interest in the betterment of the USTPA but your willingness to be proactive in making things happen. It seems fitting as we approach Independence Day to recognize the amazing gift that we are given in living in a democratic society. To be able to have a voice and stand-up for what you believe in is a right that we often overlook or squander. As a membership-based association, I hope you likewise appreciate the representation that is allowed to you through the USTPA’s democratic leadership and remember that the voice of every member matters equally here. Over the last 20 years, we have grown to be the pinnacle of competition internationally in Team Penning and Ranch Sorting and we have done it as a group, committed to preserving a western tradition. As your President, I feel privileged to lead the USTPA and hope you too take pride in being a part of the future of the USTPA. Remember, there is no letter more important in USTPA than “YOU”! Regards Jake Wells, DVM President, USTPA.

Meet Railside

Bob Jamison Region 8 Director

I’m a better person for my involvement with the USTPA, states Bob Jamison of Evans City, Pennsylvania. Bob is a farrier, an equine dentist, the USTPA Region 8 Director, and overall, a true horseman.

Meet Railside

He got his start at age thirteen in 4-H western pleasure and gaming events, but it wasn’t until the year 2000 that he found his niche in the Team Penning and Ranch Sorting world. “I figured out early in 4-H that there were ten girls for every one boy, but then I fell in love with the sport, as well,” said Bob with a laugh. Bob, and his wife, Catherine, have been dating since Catherine was fifteen, and the couple has enjoyed the transition amongst different events together. “When we first started Team Penning, we tried to do it on our pleasure horses, but it didn’t work out too well because they were terrified of the cattle,” Bob said. He soon purchased a retired cutting horse and they have been hooked ever since. “Our friends, Louie and Niki Saggione, have always been big into the sport and talked me into traveling with them to some of the bigger Penning events,” said Bob. “I’ve always believed that if you’re going to go, it’s better to go show against the best!” Bob credits the friendly atmosphere of the USTPA events for keeping him coming back for more, along with the structure of the association. “All organizations should be run as

20  Flag’sUP June/July 2013

Robert “Bob” Jamison a business,” Bob states when asked to clarify. “I also believe that if you’re going to complain about something, you should also do something to help fix it.” As Region 8 Director, Bob sees himself as the voice of the members in the northeast. “I do my best to keep my personal opinions out of discussions and simply represent the membership as much as I can,” says Bob. Region 8 is incredibly active, with six full shows plus the regional finals being held in 2013. On average, the shows have between 400 and 650 Teams per event. “We have a lot of people who travel in for the shows and use them as vacations, some even come from Canada,” Bob states. When asked about the biggest difference between the northeastern shows and the ones in the south, Bob talks about the cattle. “We mostly see angus, hereford and charolais here, whereas you’ll find more eared cattle in the south. They’re both good to work, but you need to recognize the differences if you travel outside of the region,” Bob advises. The Jamisons attend Penning and Sorting events about two weekends per month, and ride three to four times per week. They currently own six horses - five mares and one gelding that were all bought from the Saggiones. “I love mares,” says Bob, whose favorite horse is a 2003 AQHA bay mare named Somebodys Riata, also known as Karma. Karma is a two-time AQHA World Champion by Somebody Smart, and also has numerous USTPA wins. Bob and Catherine maintain their horses at home themselves, but do send them out for work on cattle. At home they focus on stops, rollbacks, turns, and generally keeping them fit, quick, and alert. “I like to buy horses with a lot of pretty that have the cow breeding behind them. You do have to be careful when buying cutters to turn into Penning and Sorting horses though, as a lot of them don’t want to chase the cattle, just cut them. A Sorting horse can be more cowy than a Penner, and the fresher the cattle the more cow sense I want my horse to have,” Bob explains. While he enjoys both events, Bob’s favorite is the Sorting, simply because you get to work the cattle more. While the Jamison’s enjoy participating in several USTPA National events that are held throughout the year, such as Fort Worth and Denver, Bob’s favorite is the World Championships, which are going to be held October 27th through November 1st in Tunica, Mississippi in 2013. “The best thing is you get to ride a lot, but the schedule is kept reasonable so you’re not out until midnight every day. I love getting to visit with friends that I might not see all season, and this year will be even better with the location being closer to home.” According to Bob, Region 8 expects to have forty or more

Meet Railside

Robert “Bob” Jamison riders attending the show, many of whom are excellent Penners, but have never been to the World Championship due to the distance. Bob will be bringing two horses to the show, and plans to participate in every class. “If I don’t know anyone who needs a ride, then I’ll draw a partner. It’s great to have that option, and you get to meet new people when drawing as well.” Even outside of his involvement with the USTPA, Bob still lives and breathes horses. He shoes approximately twohundred horses every six weeks, and also performs equine dentistry on over three-thousand horses a year! “Horses are a way of life for me, and always have been,” he states. Bob is also a sales rep for USTPA sponsor, Vinton Saddlery (www.vintonsaddle.com). “It helps because even if I have a bad Penning weekend, I might still sell a few saddles to help cover the costs!” he jokes. Vinton Saddles are made in El Paso, and Bob urges everyone to check out the new Platinum line of saddles. “I’d also like to encourage anyone who might be thinking about volunteering with the USTPA to not be afraid to step up and do it,” he states. His goals for the future include assisting on monitoring and potentially changing the rider rating system in order to make it less subjective, and also in bringing a National Production to Region 8. He concludes with, “Volunteering with the USTPA is incredibly rewarding, and I’m doing my best to make sure that all the members in my region have a good voice representing them.”

With their main location in Windham, Maine, Windham Weaponry is staffed by both experienced gunsmiths and builders, who team with leading edge customer service and sales personnel to provide the ultimate experience for gun enthusiasts. Providing the highest level of international competition in the sports of Team Penning and Ranch Sorting, the USTPA includes members from around the globe who share an affinity for the western lifestyle. “Horse and ranch people have always been gun supporters, and are typically very active in shooting for sport and hunting,” says Jeff Dyke, Director, Treasurer, and VP of Advertising at Windham. Windham Weaponry’s AR-15 rifle systems are one of the most popular sport and hunting rifles in the country today, and are sold domestically, as well as internationally. Founded in 2011 in Windham, Maine, the company has already opened a second location in Phoenix, Arizona as a “Carbon Fiber Division,” which produces rifle and firearm parts, as well as serves as a design and development center for new firearms products. The company itself is a classic American success story, made possible by Chairman, President, and CEO, Richard Dyke, who made the decision to found Windham Weaponry when Bushmaster moved its entire infrastructure out of the original Maine location to New York, leaving a large percentage of people in the town out of a job. Once the decision was made to move forward with the new company, all of the pieces fell into place, and Windham Weaponry was born. Within three months, the first production models had been perfected and delivered, along with the motto, “The Quality Goes In, Before the Rifle Goes Out.” All of their guns come with a lifetime guarantee, as well as a transferable lifetime guarantee. Purchasers can also be assured that all gun parts are 100% American made. Meredith van Benthuysen, Executive Director of the USTPA said, “We are truly thankful for the support of Windham Weaponry and feel that our membership will embrace their involvement in our sports”. Van Benthuysen said that the Windham Weaponry sponsorship will include title sponsorship of the USTPA spring National Production Show that will now be called the Windham Weaponry Showdown (previously the Spring Round-Up). Equestrians from throughout the U.S. and around the world gather to participate in USTPA events that offer large purses to all levels of riders and horses. Dyke said that Windham Weaponry recognizes how closely the two industries align, and is excited to be given the opportunity to endorse the USTPA and build relationships with its members. Chaplin’s Corner

Questions, Questions

Questions, Questions

I’m going to begin this article with a statement then ask you a series of questions. Well, eventually, I’m going to do that. Children are always asking questions like “why is the sky blue?” or this is always a good one “where do babies come from?” Most children also tend to trust and believe the truth when they hear it and as Art Linkletter (oops, aged myself) said “kids say the darndest things.” Examples of messages written to their pastors: Dear Minister: I know that God loves everybody, but he never met my sister. Dear Minister: I would like to bring my dog to church on Sunday. She is only a mutt, but she is a good Christian. (I can remember dogs coming to Cowboy Church in the arena when I preached. I guess they, too, were “good Christians” – there’s a sermon there!) Dear Minister: I would like to go to heaven someday because I know my big brother won’t be there. Dear Minister: I’m sorry I can’t leave more money in the plate on Sunday, but my father didn’t give me a raise in my allowance. Could you give a sermon about a raise in my allowance? It would help the church get more money. (Do you remember Jeff Foxworthy’s redneck joke about making change in the collection plate? I actually saw that happen one Sunday. That’s the truth – unbelievable as it sounds.) In Linkletter’s TV series, he asked one child, “Who’s the boss in your family; your mom or dad?” The child responded, “Both of them” to which Linkletter said, “oh, you’re a diplomat.” The child immediately said, “No, I’m a Catholic Baptist”. Go figure. The children of Jesus’ day were drawn to Him, adored Him, and He loved them even rebuking the disciples when they tried to send them away. To the disciples, Jesus had more important business to attend to than these little ones. Now finally to my statement that actually is a reason children are and were drawn to Jesus. He said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). Now the questions to you. What is the truth? Jesus also said, “I AM THE TRUTH… (John 14:6). So according to this statement, to be free, we must what? Know Jesus. How do we know Jesus? First, one must accept Him for the truth about Who He is – the Savior of the world, the Son of God, and the Lord of your life. Then, listen to what He says both by reading His Word and asking the Holy Spirit to help you DO IT! Then when you fail, as we all do, ask again and again and again. Pray for His guidance and direction. Learn how He lived those few years on earth and imitate Him. May you be blessed with the reading of God’s Word and this day He has given you. Rejoice in it and all your circumstances that God will lead you through if you allow Him. Know the Truth and allow Him to set you free of everything.
