Holding Herd

Howdy USTPA Members, The 2013 competition season is in full swing and from the looks of our show in Denver, we are going to have another remarkable year. The team counts were high, the crowd in the coliseum was enthusiastic and the weather in Colorado couldn’t have been better for mid-January. I hope everyone who competed this year enjoyed themselves and encourages those who couldn’t make it to put it on your calendar for next year. This show in particular makes for a vacation! I was fortunate enough to have some time over the holiday season to reflect on the changes within our Association over the last few years. I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of “giving back” during times of prosper and how the stability of the USTPA now allows us the chance to offer increased benefits to our current and future members. Last year, your volunteer leadership comprising of the USTPA Board of Directors and Executive Committee decided to help our membership and sports by lowering our entry fees and adding new draw options to our classes. These new class formats and entry fees have created a wonderful opportunity to get new members involved in our sports and I look forward to seeing all the new faces at our upcoming shows. I hope that this year you will spread the word about these changes at our shows and encourage others to take a second look at the USTPA and join us at our competitions. Better yet, invite them to come and ride on some teams with you! The weather is already starting to improve here in south Texas and it looks like we are going to have a remarkable Spring. If you’ve been wavering about riding at Houston this year, keep in mind that we are already in the high 70’s and it’s only getting better. And if that’s not enough to make the decision for you, remember that this show offers $20,000.00 in added money (courtesy of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo)! So, get your straw hats back out and look for me at the Reliant Center in Houston!

Remember… it’s not about the wins you take, it’s about the friends you make. Regards, Jake Wells, DVM President, USTPA

Meet Railside

Cathy and Henry Herrmann describe the USTPA as “a big branch of our family,” and proudly added that the people are one of the driving factors towards their participation. “The payouts are very good with the USTPA, and I even won seven saddles last year alone,” says Cathy. She and her husband are definitely not strangers to the pay window, with wins at the National Western Stock Show in the Pro/ Am/Novice Penning, a World Championship win in the #9 Sorting, and Cathy claiming the 2012 Year End Reserve Champion of all number two rated riders in the association. “My favorite win was when my husband and I won saddles together on the same team,” Cathy stated, “We don’t ride together all the time since our styles are so different – I’m much more aggressive while Henry is laid back.” Both of the Herrmann’s have been riding since they were very little, with Cathy’s mom being known to say that she rode before she walked! Henry was a team roper when he and Cathy met, but has pretty much given it up for Penning and Sorting. The couple married in March 2008 and each has children; however, none have the “horse bug” as strong as their parents. “Our granddaughter, Addy, is four years old now, and she seems to

really want to be around the horses and ride, says Cathy with excitement, I’m sure thinking about the USTPA youth classes to come”. Cathy grew up working in a feed lot, and currently keeps over 1500 head of cattle while farming 8000 acres of wheat ground. She also owns a retail store that you can visit online at www. rhinestonesnrodeo.com, where they make and sell custom western décor and saddle racks. She credits her feed lot experience for her initial skills in both Sorting and Penning, along with countless hours in the saddle over the years. Like most USTPA participants, Cathy and Henry got their start at local jackpots, but quickly moved up to the larger shows. “We’ve been with the USTPA for about four years. We did well in the local stuff, but wanted to get into a bigger circle,” said Cathy. Residing in Syracuse, Kansas, the furthest they traveled in 2012 was to Montana, and they plan to go all over the U.S. in 2013. “The best thing about this sport is that both my husband and I can compete in it. My husband is my number one supporter!” Cathy said with a smile in her voice. Besides their five main competition horses, Cathy and Henry raise Goldfinger and Jackie Bee bred horses that specialize in ranch work and roping. They keep about twenty broodmares and partner with another ranch in Texas to raise the foals. “We competed on them up until about one and a half years ago, when we bought five horses from Joel and Jared Lesh, and that really upped our game,” says Cathy. “Having the right tools makes the job much easier.” All of their horses live at home with them, and are maintained by being ridden three to Feb/March 2013 Flag’sUP  15

Cathy remembers, “I fell in love with her, but Henry said that we couldn’t buy her. Little did I know, but he had already bought the horse and surprised me with her later!” Both Dually and Cathy’s favorite event is the Penning, due to the adrenaline rush that goes along with it. “You can make a couple of mistakes and still recover; whereas in Sorting, if you mess up, you’re done. And I love the rush of the sweep at the end,” Cathy states. Cathy and Henry look for a horse that has a big motor and a lot of heart. All of their horses perform in both Team Penning and Ranch Sorting, but each one has a specialty. Cathy’s horse, Dually, and Henry’s horse, Haida, are their main Team Penners, while Denali and Jack are better Sorters.

four times a week in their fields. Cathy and Henry are firm believers that letting them move out keeps them in shape both physically and mentally. Cathy’s main horse is named Short Bred Dually, a twelve year old mare that she started out with on a three show lease.

Cathy urges newcomers to not be timid about riding in the National shows. “With the new draw system, you get the opportunity to ride with new people without having to ask, and you never know who you’re going to win with.” In Cheyenne, Wyoming recently, Cathy placed third in the Penning with an eight and ten year old. “Those kids are rock stars,” she says thinking back. “I’d ride with them any time!” Both Cathy and Henry credit most of their

success to hard work, commitment, and a lot of help along the way. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and go to as many clinics and lessons as you can. Learning to do it the right way from the start will allow you to go far!”

Spring Round-Up

Feb/March 2013 Flag’sUP  21

Chaplin’s Corner God’s Plans for Children Last edition, I wrote about “God’s Plans and the Elections” but now I would like to examine God’s plans for our children. As I pondered the world we live in and the horror we are unfortunately seeing more and more of, I am compelled to examine this topic. This edition encompasses the month of February with the love holiday of Valentine’s Day. If you are a parent, you know the love you especially had upon seeing that tiny new addition to your family. It’s like no other. The first verse about children that came to my mind was about how we, as parents, are to raise our children. “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). This verse led me to Ephesians 6:4 “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” Now I ask you where in those two verses do we see anything about teaching them violent ways or destructions such as seen at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut or the middle school in Paducah, Arkansas or Columbine, Colorado or in other schools throughout the world. Many are totally in shock at the killing of small children and especially by children. But let’s examine some possible reasons many of which are fully documented. What are many of these children doing today (not team penning and sorting to be sure)? They are in front of video screens, televisions, or movie screens observing over and over the vivid, graphic pictures of killing and violence. And not the westerns of yesterday where the good guys win and there are consequences for crime. They thrill at making more points in video games as they shoot down another target which is often a person. Some will naively claim that it’s just a game and there is no harm in them. I watched a former military official who spoke of how soldiers are trained to kill their enemies. And it’s conditional and habitual training much like you would train a dog or any animal to perform some task. In academia it’s called Pavlov’s dog and is merely providing a stimulus along with a reward of some sort (often food) in exchange for some activity. That was amazing to me to learn this about the military. The officer said that human beings must be taught to be desensitized to the violence or to kill their enemy. He also said they often use videotype games to condition the soldiers to repeatedly perform some action. Let me back up and add that it’s not the result of the ownership of guns that kill because per capita there have been more guns in homes in the past than currently. There must be something else occurring that is causing the increase in the violence. By the way, don’t let the statistics about crime going down fool you, because that’s a comparison of apples and 22  Flag’sUP Feb/March 2013

oranges. Because of the improvements in medical technology and life-saving advancements, fewer people are dying from violence than in the past. If we were to accurately compare the 1970’s rates and today’s without our medical advancements, officials believe violence has increased four-fold. Depressing to be for sure, there is hope. One of my purposes for writing on this topic is to give you information to share with your local educators or anyone who has contact with our children. It’s a terrific program that has begun in a few states with dramatic results as well as the children and teenagers wanting more of the program. It not only redirects them to more constructive activities but decreases obesity and increases test scores. It can be found at www.takethechallengenow.net Psalm 127:3 “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD; the fruit of the womb is a reward.” The answer is not to take away guns from law-abiding citizens. By the way, did you know that where guns are banned, violent crime is the highest? Incarcerated felons have been interviewed about where they will not commit crimes and they will to the person answer “where there are guns in abundance among the citizens.” I have also just learned that teachers in Utah are armed and there has never been an instance of a school shooting in that state. Hum? Now, we don’t want to arm teachers who are not thoroughly trained in the use of weapons as well as those that are emotionally stable. (I would hope that all our teachers are emotionally stable – with or without a gun). Common-sense needs to prevail. One teacher with a gun in Sandy Hook could have prevented the mass-killings. I imagine this article will disturb some of you but bear with me. We must take back our country by being pro-active ourselves. We cannot expect our elected officials to do everything and we do nothing. God gave us, not the government, the responsibility of raising our children with His guidance. We will not be perfect and we will make mistakes. I strongly urge you to check out Take the Challenge Now. The results have been very positive. We can overcome the evil with good (Romans 12:21). And love covers a multitude of sins (Proverbs 10:12) as well as conquering fear (1 John 4:18). Love your children and teach them as God would have you to. I welcome your comments and would love to hear about any who have taken up the challenge with this program. Please get involved!
