Howdy Y’all, As some of you may know, a show producer in Florida recently proposed hosting a weekend show that would be marketed as 4 separate USTPA sanctioned shows. At the time of the applications and now, this concept has fueled some serious discussion regarding the best means for furthering our mission to grow the sports of Team Penning and Ranch Sorting. Upon first consideration, the approval of 4 sanctioned shows in one weekend in one location seems unfair. After all, riders in other areas invest significant time and money to attend 4 sanctioned shows at varying times and locations to fulfill their World Championship qualification requirements. In an effort to grow interest in our sports and participation at our World Championship, we ultimately decided to cross our fingers and approve the 4 show applications. As we turn 20 years old as an organization, we are continually trying to determine the best way to keep our sports and the USTPA thriving. World qualification requirements, competition rules and of course ratings, are always being critiqued and modified in an effort to improve our organization. Never a group to shy from change, we try a lot of new things. Some work and some don’t. For years, we have discussed the challenge of developing opportunities for international riders and riders in regions with less or no shows. We take hardship requests into consideration and have revised qualification standards for some international riders with no regional representation. The one binding thread in all of these changes though is that someone proposed a new idea. They brought it forward in writing for review by our leadership. Clearly, riders choosing to go to Florida to fulfill their qualification requirements for the World Championship will have an easy time qualifying but we believe this to be part of the cost of our investment in an otherwise struggling region. This show is an opportunity to try and attract new riders to our organization and maybe renew some interest in Team Penning and Ranch Sorting in the southeast. Would the majority of our riders love to have this opportunity in Texas or Oklahoma - YES! Is it most needed there - NO. If it works in Florida, we may try this type of show format to “jump-start” other states and countries without any USTPA sanctioned events. If it fails, then probably not. The moral of this story though folks is that we need to keep trying and not just talking. We need show producers. We need members. And, we need formal proposals brought to our leadership for consideration when people have ideas. We are an organization of members who want our sports to grow so that we can keep doing what we love. We have to work for our own survival and sometimes sacrifice what is “fair” for what is right and impactful. Whether the decision proves to be right or wrong, we must keep trying because the failure to make a decision is a decision to do nothing. Regards,

Jake Wells, DVM President, USTPA

Meet Railside would love it and thrive in the environment and some would hate it and shut down. Whatever the event, Gary has had plenty of success, with the latest being the 2012 Masters Team Penning World Champion with Mark Walles and Billy Ray Richard, an event he also won in 2010. “My goal is always just to make the finals, and I take it one ride at a time,” he says. Gary also advises that the best thing you can do is be a champion outside of the arena, and inside the arena will follow. “I just thank God to be able to compete. When I had open heart surgery several years ago, I was given two hours to live, and it puts it all in perspective,” says Gary. The finals are his favorite event of the year as he loves getting to see everyone there. Gary states, “The USTPA is the epitome of an organization that has stood the test of time, and a large part of that is due to the family environment that it encourages. Sorting especially is growing exponentially and drawing in more and more young people every day, even in spite of challenges such as the economy and rising cattle prices.” Outside of the horses, Gary’s other loves are auctioneering and showing dairy cattle. Gary tells, “I got started in the 1970’s, but was always fascinated with auctioneers, and grew up on a cattle farm. I was actually teaching Ag and going back to school to get an admin degree, when my church needed an auctioneer for a fundraiser. I had always played at it while growing up, even auctioning off a book report in high school one time, so I volunteered to run the church auction and just loved it. I ended up going to auction school instead of admin school, and haven’t looked back since.” While he’s auctioned everything under the sun, dairy cattle has been Gary’s specialty throughout the years. He sold some of the first clones for over $250,000 and

Gary Estes

was featured in the Springfield newspaper in 2012 for an auction that had an average selling price of $20,000 per dairy cow. And most recently, he was inducted into the Missouri Auctioneers Hall of Fame “People ask me all the time if I get nervous, whether it’s selling a high profile cow or riding in the Team Penning arena. I just tell them that you need confidence to replace the nervousness,” says Gary. “I also tell people not to ride negative or you’ll beat yourself before you start. Being positive is the first step to being a champion.” Gary is incredibly excited about having the opportunity to auctioneer at the 2013 World Show for the second year in a row. The events that Gary leads will be a live auction of donated items, as well as the “Play With the Pro’s” class auction where riders can bid to ride in a special class with professionals. “Play with the Pro’s was a main highlight of the 2012 auction. I initially thought that we would raise a couple thousand dollars, but was ecstatic when the gavel fell at over $60,000 in raised funds,” says Gary. While he won’t take credit for the success of the 2012 auction, Gary does admit that the auctioneer can make a difference in overall results. “In a benefit auction, it’s my job to motivate people to give. To do this, I need to know about what I’m selling and just try to be good to people. God blessed me with a voice, and I love to use it.” No matter what your talents are, Gary encourages you to volunteer with the USTPA at an upcoming event. “All you need to do is make yourself known and that you want to help. I felt like I could be a benefit as an auctioneer, so I stepped up to do it.” All in all, as Gary says, “Being a winner is just being who you are. The USTPA will allow you to meet a lot of great people along the way, which a lot of times, is even more important than drawing a check.”

Chaplain’s Corner Cowboy Heaven An old cowboy was riding his trusty horse followed by his faithful dog along an unfamiliar road. The cowboy was enjoying the new scenery, when he suddenly remembered dying, and realized the dog beside him had been dead for years, as had his horse. Confused, he wondered what was happening, and where the trail was leading them. After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall that looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch topped by a golden letter “H” that glowed in the sunlight. Standing before it, he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-ofpearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like gold. He rode toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side. Parched and tired out by his journey, he called out, ‘Excuse me, where are we?’ ‘This is Heaven, sir,’ the man answered. ‘Wow! Would you happen to have some water?’ the man asked. ‘Of course, sir. Come right in, and I’ll have some ice water brought right up.’ As the gate began to open, the cowboy asked, ‘Can I bring my partners, too?’ ‘I’m sorry, sir, but we don’t accept pets.’ The cowboy thought for a moment, then turned back to the road and continued riding, his dog trotting by his side. After another long ride, at the top of another hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a ranch gate that looked as if it had never been closed. As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book. ‘Excuse me,’ he called to the man. ‘Do you have any water?’ ‘Sure, there’s a pump right over there. Help yourself.’ ‘How about my friends here?’ the traveler gestured to the dog and his horse. ‘Of course! They look thirsty, too,’ said the man. The trio went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with buckets beside it. The traveler filled a cup and the buckets with wonderfully cool water and took a long drink, as did his horse and dog. When they were full, he walked back to the man who was still standing by the tree. ‘What do you call this place?’ the traveler asked. ‘This is Heaven,’ he answered. ‘That’s confusing,’ the traveler said. ‘The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.’ ‘Oh, you mean the place with the glitzy, gold street and fake pearly gates? That’s hell.’ ‘Doesn’t it make you angry when they use your name like that?’ ‘Not at all. Actually, we’re happy they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.’
