Meet Railside London & Tony Gibbs Living East of Dallas in Garland, TX, London Gibbs, along with her father, Tony Gibbs, relish the joy of spending more time together than most as they share their passion for team penning and sorting. “It’s pretty fantastic,” says London when asked about what it’s like getting to travel to shows with her family. “I love how we can do this sport together. It’s such a good way to have fun!” The pair travels to some type of horse event almost every weekend throughout the year; and while London says she does miss doing some things with her non-horse friends, that it’s all well worth it. “You just have to spend a little extra time figuring out your schedule,” she states. The dedication to their sport has obviously been paying off for the Gibbs family, who recently swept the San Antonio Stock show with wins in everything from the #13, to the #9, to the #5, to the #11! “The cows were difficult in San Antonio, but we had some good luck that brought us to the winner’s circle,” London says about the event. She recounts how a cow came running out of the herd in one of her team penning classes without prompting from a horse/rider. She chased after it thinking it was a trash cow, only to discover that it was the third cow that they needed to go to the pen! While London and 20

Tony do win their fair share of events, London laughed when I mentioned

the Houston Stock Show which didn’t work out quite as well in their favor (although Tony did bring home the win in the Master’s Class!). “I don’t think I even made it to the second go-round the entire weekend,” states London. “It’s weekends like that though that makes me want to keep going again and again so I’ll keep getting better.” Incredibly modest about her own riding, London credits much of her success to her horse, ‘Hemi Powered Dually’, an eight year old sorrel AQHA gelding with a blaze and three socks. “I could talk about him forever,” says London, “… he’s my baby.” The duo has been together for almost four years now, and Hemi is the only horse that London competes on. “My Dad likes to bring multiple horses to the events, the faster the better, but Hemi does it all for me. He’s one of those rare horses that can ignore my bad habits and put out a stellar performance every time. All I have to do is just shift in my saddle and he gets to where he needs to be.” London explains further that she has to have a connection with the horse in order to compete at the upper

levels. “I don’t adjust well to just any horse, “she says. “I need one that’s light in the face and feel like they’ll immediately do whatever I ask.” Tony Gibbs also likes his horses light and responsive, but wants that extra speed and cow sense thrown into the mix as well. “Dad really wants one that can sit down and turn around quickly,” London states. All of the Gibbs horses know how to sort and pen, and London explains that they travel too much for them to specialize in one or the other. “We can only bring so many horses in the trailer, and since Dad especially

likes to enter up the max amount of times, he’ll switch out horses throughout the day so they all get enough rest.” Hemi is London’s only horse; however, the family keeps about thirteen horses at a time. London’s Mom and younger sister also ride, but don’t compete as often as London and her Dad. “My Mom doesn’t like to do the big shows with us, although she can kick my butt when she puts her mind to it,” London says. “She’s usually there to root us on though!” Coming home from the Houston Stock Show this past year, London and Tony were both glad that her mom had come to watch but drove her own car to the show grounds. “It should be about four hours to get home from Houston, but we ran out of gas about a mile out from the closest station. Luckily, Mom

had her car and could go fill up the can for us. We got back on the road and then had a tire explode while we were in the left hand lane – still about fifteen miles from the house. We had to slowly make our way across four lanes of traffic and limp into a gas sta-

tion. Needless to say, that trip took about 2.5 hours longer than it should have!” London also tells about a time last year when a tire caught on fire because an axle locked up. “The good thing about this instance was that my Dad had enough water in the truck to put it out,” London said. She stresses that while they do occasionally encounter some bad luck, those moments are usually quite easy to laugh about after the fact! The Gibbs family got started in horses about eighteen years ago when London finally got the pony that she had begged for at age eight. “I think my Dad just got tired of listening to me asking for one,” she jokes. About four years after that, the family was invited to go to their first team penning, and they have been hooked ever since. “I took a small break to ride English horses when I was in college, but I always come back to it,” says London. “I love the diverse crowd at the USTPA events. You can make new friends from all over the country!” London states that she also loves being

able to both pen and sort at the same event, as her favorite of the two varies from day to day. “Penning is a more forgiving sport,” she explains, “and Hemi loves to pen because he gets to stretch his legs and run. The

pressure of sorting can sometimes get to both of us, and I have to be careful not to fall prey to the “phantom

21

cow,” meaning the one that I think I see out of the corner of my eye that isn’t really there. Sometimes I’ll turn Hemi to block the phantom and end up losing the real cows!” Luckily, if either London or Tony makes a mistake on a given day, they know not to

harp on it to one another. “We’re very much alike,” London says. “While we do pick on each other, we both know that we’re our own worst critics, and messing up is something that eventually happens to everyone. We love to ride together and do so in every class we can.” Outside of riding, London also enjoys singing and says that it’s the first thing she does every morning. “I’ve been really delighted to get to sing the National Anthem at some of the shows this year,” she says. “It’s an incredibly meaningful song.” London and Tony both work in the construction industry and keep the horses as a hobby on the side. “My advice for anyone starting

out is to just keep doing it. It takes time to figure it out, but it’s worth it.” London would also like to thank her

Dad, Tony Gibbs, for everything that he has done and continues to do for her. “It’s hard to put into words how amazing he is. I thank God every day that I was born into this family.”

LABOR DAY WEEKEND 2012

is gonna be a very busy weekend. If last year’s show wasn’t exciting enough and the fact that we already have over 150 stalls reserved and ITS ONLY MARCH!!! You better PLAN EARLY. Labor Day weekend 2011 at the JL Arena in Whitesboro, Texas was PHENOMENAL. YOU the members made it the LARGEST REGIONAL show EVER! Over 1600 teams! WOW! All we can say is THANK YOU for being there. We had people from all parts of the country, from as far as Colorado, Arizona, Washington, Oregon, New York, Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. A steady stream of trailers started pulling in early in the week and continued pulling in through the wee hours of Friday morning. With the continuous determination and efforts of many folks, both horses and riders found their spots for the weekend. The competition was intense throughout the entire weekend. With 16 beautiful Todd Jey Saddles, 15 gorgeous Gist Belt Buckles & 7 sets of Custom Spurs and not to mention the cash payouts from the large classes up for grabs, everybody was riding hard. All these cash & prizes was an ENORMOUS HIT with all the contestants!!! With the numerous hours that went into making this event a HUGE SUCCESS, Jared, Sarah, Bryan, Dora, Louie, & Niki would like to thank Rowdy, Jimmy, Chelsea, ReeDee, Courtney, Donnie & Josh and his cattle crew for all of their hard work. Thanks to all these hard working individuals who worked vigorously to make sure that the show ran smoothly and efficiently and that USTPA had another outstanding show at the JL Ranch Arena. Chaplain Corner

She Is Not Lost With April and May, spring of the year is upon us which indicates new life. As I contemplate new life, I think of my mother’s recent death. You may say, how do they relate? Now, she has that wonderful, glorious new life. 2 Corinthians 5:6-8 “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” When someone dies, I believe it may be hardest for the friends to come up with words in which they desire to comfort the family of the one who has died. I appreciate every gesture from those who knew about mother’s death. In fact, some of the words gave me the topic for this month’s article. “We’re so sorry for your loss.” For the Christian, when someone dies and leaves this earthly life, we know where they are. They are not lost. Webster’s dictionary defines lost in many ways including that you don’t know where something or someone is at; they can’t be found. Many years ago, I preached in part on death and drew an analogy that I hope will give you some comfort. First of all, you must know the Bible is clear that our citizenship is not on earth but in heaven. Philippians 3:20-21 “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.” Now my analogy is that for the

Christian it is just like taking a trip to a sorting/penning in Montana. Your friends and family didn’t get to go this time and they miss you but they know they will see you again. They didn’t get to go this time but they will in the future; therefore, they will see you again and you are not lost! The Bible is also clear that our earthly bodies are merely tents – our real self is not in that decaying tent or vessel. 2 Corinthians 5:1 “For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” Another definition of loss is “final separation from a person.” Again for the Christian, that is not the case. We have been promised a grand reunion with our fellow believers when, as the song says, “we all get to heaven”. Mother’s physical tent had been so crippled for so many years. She was asked if she was in pain in which she replied, “no, but I’m miserable.” And that she was. I grieved for her misery but rejoiced in her death because I was imagining her grand reunion with my dad and all her sisters, brothers, and others who had been allowed to leave this life before her. But I was especially rejoicing and praising God that now mother was with her Lord and Savior, Jesus. She was one week from being 98 years-old. There is a saying that “aging is not for sissies.” That is so true. Some may ask why God allows it and I can’t begin to say but I do

know that if a person is still alive, God has a purpose and a mission for them on earth. I often wonder if our trials in life are a preparation to build our character and strength for those older years. The famous Christian and survivor of Hitler’s concentration camps, Corrie ten Boom, suffered a debilitating stroke and was silent for the last five years of her life but she knew she still had a purpose and still led others to a faith in Jesus Christ. Then I think of older horses that are used at therapeutic ranches to help bring joy and strength to those individuals who have some physical/mental limitation. What sparkle is seen in the eyes of those riders. So I close with the words of the Apostle Paul in Philippians 1: 21-23 “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain. But if I live on in the flesh, this will mean fruit from my labor; yet what I shall choose I cannot tell. For I am hard-pressed between the two, having a desire to depart and be with Christ, which is far better.” I hope you have the assurance of the Apostle Paul and do not fear the day of your departure from this life and that it will be a journey into the glorious final, eternal life with Jesus Christ.
