Celeste O’Dea

“It’s Never Too Late to Start” Celeste O’Dea’s Journey into Horses” By Heidi Cook, USTPA Writer

Celeste O’Dea grew up in a suburb outside of Chicago without a single pet, nor a desire to have one. “If you don’t grow up with animals, you don’t understand them. I had a terrible fear of dogs,” she states. But as sometimes happens with life, Celeste’s path crossed with the then future USTPA President Joe O’Dea and she slowly but surely learned to not just accept animals into her life, but to love them and the lifestyle that she and her husband enjoy today. “I remember my husband bringing home a rottweiler guard dog from the shop to stay in the garage, and I was scared to death of it. I stayed on one wing of the house while the dog was there, but eventually came to trust her and actually became attached to her,” she remembers. Celeste’s husband Joe had an upbringing that was almost the polar opposite of her own. His father reinstated the mounted patrol in their area, and they had always had horses. “Joe can pretty much ride anything,” Celeste states with obvious pride. “When you love someone, their joy is yours. I could see where he would just be transformed around horses, but I always watched from a distance.” However, as the years went by, Celeste eventually changed her mind and finally made the plunge to actually ride a horse while visiting their friends at the Pitzer Ranch in Nebraska, even though she was just shy of fifty years old. “I think I got on the horse more to impress our friends, but I was terrified and wouldn’t do more than walk,” she reminisces. Her game plan of taking it slow and steady though went out the window when her horse spooked at a calf and started to run. “I vaguely remember my husband telling me to grab the reins to slow down. We about ran all the way to Colorado from Nebraska!” she laughs. “As scared as I was, there was a little piece of thrill in how fast these animals move. I didn’t die and thought ‘wow, this was really thrilling.’ It’s what sparked my interest!” This runaway trip happened only five years ago, and even Celeste is amazed at how far she has come. “I did discover that I really could not ride well on trail rides,” she muses, “I’m just too tense. It was my husband’s idea to step up as he said that if I had a job to do while on the horse that my instincts would take over.” According to Celeste, when doing things like moving the cattle, she actually forgets to be scared, and is still surprised when she sees a video of herself going faster than a trot. “The first time I went team penning, the announcer said ‘Flags Up!’ and I didn’t even know what that meant,” she exclaims! She credits her teammates for being so patient with her and states, “At least now I know how the game goes!” Denver, Colorado was the location of Celeste’s first USTPA show, and she says she remembers how awkward she felt at first. “My husband told me what class I was entered in and who my partners were,” she says. “I remember how fast everyone seemed to go and how they seemed to speak a foreign language. I thought I was in the wrong sport – I should be doing midnight bowling or something!” However, with lots of support from her newfound friends, Celeste soon found success with the USTPA, even winning a buckle in the Pro-N at the most recent show in Denver and also being able to participate as one of the Top 10 in the PBR featured team penning! “Denver is my home town, so I had my mother in the audience as well as several high school friends. They were blown away! I didn’t hurl but had serious butterflies in my stomach. My friends told me I had to stop freaking out and that I was going to fall of my horse and get hurt unless I chilled out a bit!”

Photographs created and provided by PRO-MOTION, LTD Castle Rock, CO 10 Flag’sUP UP Feb/Mar 2017

The skill and professionalism of all the participants is what Celeste says makes the USTPA so unique. “The horse is just an extension of what they do. Their horse’s legs are their legs

and their eyes are their horse’s eyes. It’s impressive to see them working as such a team,” she says. She also talks about how tough the competitors are both physically and spiritually. “They are strong hearted even if bad things go down,” she explains. “They keep their chin up. Horse people are great to be around… they just help.” According to Celeste, some of the best advice she’s ever received came from a ten-year-old at a USTPA show. They said, “You’ll get there. Just ride better!” After working in a laboratory for twentyfive years, Celeste now enjoys spending her time doing what she calls “housing.” She’s supervised the building of the last three homes they have lived in, with her husband doing all aspects of the construction. Luckily though, she is almost done with their current abode as her

daughter has just recently gotten engaged and the wedding planning is soon to begin! They are just wrapping up the building of their barn and will bring their five horses home once it is completed. Celeste’s favorite among them is a gelding named “Chunk” that she states may not be the best looking one in the barn but has the largest heart. “He’s a sure thing and I’m not afraid to get on him. He’s not fast, pretty, or limber enough for Joe though,” she laughs. Her favorite event to do on Chunk is team penning due to the exhilaration she feels when performing in the class. “I’m more intimidated by penning, but that’s the thrill of it,” she states. Celeste advises new riders to just get out there and start doing it. “If I can do this,

anybody can,” she says. “Enjoy the thrill of trying something new. They do not want to miss out on getting introduced to the amazing group of horse people that are out there. They have so much wisdom and great advice to share that they would be cheating themselves out of a new adventure to never try it.” When the weather warms up, Celeste and Joe usually attend two shows a month and are anxious to start seeing their friends regularly again. “Everyone has just been so kind and always says, ‘there will be a next time’ when thing don’t go right. I’m so lucky to have been introduced to a culture that I didn’t even know was there before. It’s a culture of resilience, and I would encourage anyone who even has a thought to try it to just jump into the sport!”

Chaplain’s Corner God’s Voice and Choice As I was praying about what to write in this edition, God spoke to me in a still small voice (a thought I suppose) Psalm 39:1. I wasn’t thinking about any Bible verses or anything, I had just prayed “What do You want me to write about?” The only thought that came was just Psalm 39:1. I have read through the entire Bible several times over my lifetime and that particular psalm has not been one that I would even think of on my own although there are many others that I could have. So I looked it up and began reading and couldn’t stop with just verse one. This particular psalm is from King David. My NLT version of the Bible didn’t say at what point in his life that he wrote it. Psalm 39:1-8 “I said to myself, ‘I will watch what I do and not sin in what I say. I will hold my tongue when the ungodly are around me.’ But as I stood there in silence-not even speaking of good thingsthe turmoil within me grew worse. The more I thought about it, the hotter I got, igniting a fire of words: ‘LORD, remind me how brief my time on earth will be. Remind me that my days are numberedhow fleeting my life is. You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand. My entire lifetime is just a moment to you; at best, each of us is but a breath.’ We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing. We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it. And so, Lord, where do I put my hope? My only hope is in You. Rescue me from my rebellion. Do not let fools mock me.” These words are amazing and I hardly know where to begin other that from the first verse. Oh my, to not speak and/ or at the very least to measure my words especially around those that don’t know Jesus. That puts me in the mind of Jesus telling us to be “salt and light”. We live in a very dark and evil world due to sin so God wants us to be very careful so that we are putting on the very image of Him in which we were originally created.

I just recently watch the movie, God Is Not Dead. I know it’s been around awhile but I don’t go to movies so I saw it on TV during the Christmas holidays. It was a very well done depiction of not being ashamed of your faith but understanding that our behavior may be the only “Jesus” that the unbeliever is ever exposed to since they may never set foot in a church house. Then the passage in Psalm goes on to indicate how difficult it is to hold our tongues when we start to get angry about any number of issues but possibly including others not believing. Again in the movie, the young man who was defending his faith in Jesus to his atheist philosophy professor and the manipulated class, he only once showed any ire. It was toward the very end of the movie when he probed the professor in front of the class as to “why he hated God”. The student had already found that out in private that the professor’s mother had died of cancer when he was but twelve years old. Of course, the child had fervently prayed for her healing but she died. He got the professor to openly admit that, “yes, he indeed hated God.” Oops, he was then caught in his own words. How can you hate Someone who does not exist? Then one very brave student stood up followed my one after the other until the entire class said aloud that “God is NOT dead”. The first day of class, the professor had them write and sign a statement that ‘God is dead’. If they didn’t sign that statement, 33% of their grade would be an F. Talk about manipulation! Not to digress too much into the movie, I want to proceed back to Psalm 39 but highly recommend you watch the movie if you haven’t seen it. After King David’s anger must have subsided, he realizes that his days on this earth are very short and he asks God to remind him of that very thing and to basically know his priorities. The most important one would be to place faith and trust in God. He is our

only hope. The good news of the movie was the ending and yet it was bitter sweet. I suppose I will be ruining it for you by revealing the ending but there are many more nooks and crannies in the movie that would be interesting and entertaining as well. The professor gets hit by a car and is dying there on the street in the middle of a rain storm. A preacher “happens” to be there at the time who leads him back to Jesus in his dying breaths. That scene reminded me of the one thief on the cross next to Jesus who acknowledged who Jesus truly was. It also reminded me of the psalm passage where King David realized that God was his only hope. The professor’s dying mother had written him a letter prior to her death quoting Isaiah 55:8-9 “’My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,’ says the LORD. ‘And My ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so My ways are higher than your ways and My thoughts higher than your thoughts.’” In the professor’s dying breaths he was reciting those words as well then he openly acknowledged Jesus as his Savior. Sad that it took that accident to bring him to the Truth of Jesus’ and yet, happy that he would be in the very presence of Jesus in the blink of an eye. Have you made that choice to follow Jesus? That’s basically what the student in the movie explaining His faith said. It boils down to just a choice to accept or reject. Not doing anything is also a choice which means rejecting Jesus. So, if you haven’t ever made a choice, won’t you contemplate that seriously today? If you have, I hope your faith will be strengthened and encouraged to speak boldly when given the opportunity by God’s Holy Spirit. If you have questions, feel free to email me.
