The rapid urbanization in China enhances people’s lives in some aspects and brings a greater efficiency to the society, but it also destroys the natural ecosystem and previous city structure. The construction of many so calls “functionalism” buildings in the city results in societal isolation and creates boundaries between among groups of people, which significantly reduces the diversity of urban spaces. Consequently, how to design hybrid space that could reverse the urbanization trend to some extent became my greatest interest during five years of study in the university.

Achieving De-urbanization by Hybrid Space Architecture is not just a machine that represents efficiency, it should contain something more than it appears to be, something that goes beyond its basic functions. WATER SYSTEM __Primary Shcool Focusing on Rainwater Collection and Reuse
Children, a certain group with immature mentality, use their curiosity and imagination to grow and learn about the world. However, traditional primary school in China is convenience-oriented for management, and has limited diversified space for children's development. To children, the school is more or less like a prison that prevents them from exploring their surroundings. In this project, based upon the local climate contidions, I enlarged the typical traffic corridor of the primary school, and introduced a water recycling and treatment system into it. Apart from responding to the climate problem, the corridor becomes a mixed space for both educational activities and water processing exhibition activities to happen. Children's personalities and their spontaneous activities are encouraged in the hybrid space.

PROBLEM SOLVING The site is located at Shuangjiang Town where there is little precipitation in certain months. Farmers have to drill water in their greenhouses, and children have to get water delivered by trucks. I conceived the project as a water collection and treatment device to collect and store most rainwater in rainy months for later use. And the hybrid space was then created by it.

ARCHETYPE OF HYBRID SPACE The archetype of hybrid space in the school is an enlarge main traffic corridor that connects different classrooms on its both side. In instead of trying to design a traditional primary school that only achieves the goal of educating children with discipline and rules, by combining typical educational space with water exhibition space, this school aims to encourage them to use their curiosity exploring uncertainties and challenges in the environment.

In this hybrid educational system, students could be able to communicate with nature, technology and other people.
The canopy structure is mainly made up of aluminium top frame, waterproof fabric aluminium mast. The water is collected through the mast down to the sewerage system.
The tank device consists of water inlet channel, central tube, mixing shaft mud pipe, outlet pipe and operating bridge.The water goes through sedimentation process.

There are totally 8 landscape ponds that could be able to collect 392m³ of water for the school.
17m ×15m×15m The two after- treatment cisterns could accommodate 7,650m³ of water, which is the difference between the total amount of water collection from May to Oct and the totalamount of water-use during that period of time.
14m ×14m×13m The before-treatment cisterns are able to accommodate 5270m³ of water 5096, which is about the total amount of water collection in Oct.

THE EXTENTION OF EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES INTO WATER SYSTEM Different kinds of educational activities could happen in different processes of the water treatment and each process is related to one or two certain educational activities because the processes could offer the resources that those activities need. For example, rain garden provides children with plants they need to paint or observe in an art class or a botany class.

This is a lager rain garden outsite the corridor, children could be able to participate in various activities such as making paintings and observation for the beautiful aquatic plants, playing and resting. At the end the path, there is the water curtain area where children are dancing.

This is the beginning of the hybrid corridor, and also the entrance hall of the primary school. People will clearly see the first step-sedimentation filtration- of the water processing, which makes them to develop a good sense of water saving.
INTERACTION WITH NATURE When rainy season comes, the whole school becomes a huge exhibition of water recycling system, enabling children to communicate with nature.

SYMBIOTIC INDUSTRY __City Complex Focusing on the Combination of Agriculture and Service Industries
In China, dual economic structure is the fundamental cause for the increasing gap between urban and rural areas, the nation is focusing on developing industrialization and speeding up urbanization at the expense of agriculture and villages. The urban fringe is in face of industry transformation. Many farmhouses have been replaced by so-call modern buildings which are out of context. Farmers' memory of the land and their lifestyles are lost. In this project, characteristic industries of villages around the site are transformed into agricultural production and scientific research base, tofu open processing workshop, leisure agriculture garden with vegetables and trees. Those programs all together interact with hotel programs to achieve balance through the exchange for resources. And the relationship among different groups of people around the site is re-defined in this hybrid building.

SYMBIOSIS RELATIONSHIP THEORY
Vegetable Industry Pollution-free vegetables was a popular and energetic industry in Wangyu Village in the last decades, but it begins to fail recently because of the urbanization.
The symbiosis theory is derived from the field of biology, which describes different species could live together through some certain substance. Just as the diagram showed below, the cattle and birds are connected through worms, and cattle and sheep live together by eating grasses. Mr. Kisho Kurokawa develop this idea in the filed of architecture.
SITE BACKGROUND The site of the project is located at the periphery of the Hefei, due to the urbanization, many villages around the site have been demolished, and farmers are forced to take residential relocation. Their industries and lifestyle have changed. In addition, the resources within the area haven't been well distributed and utilized. In other words, the industries do not use each other's products. Those products are mainly delivered to far places, which increases the cost of transportation. Thus, the area does not achieve the self-sufficiency of resources.

Since the agriculture industry and the service industry have their own independence and difference, not all parts of them cloud be mixed. Thus, the mixing degree between the agriculture industry and the service industry in the project should depends on the space publicity degree of programs in either one industry. The higher the publicity degree is, the higher the mixing degree is. I firstly concentrated on accomplishing the setting of different programs in the hotel according to general requirement for hotel design, and then analysed the publicity of different programs according to PSI model. Based on the results and the characteristics of different programs in the agriculture industry, I came up with four types of hybrid space for later design.

THE FORMING PROCESS OF HYBRID SPACE After getting data on the space publicity degree of programs on each floor in the hotel, I divided the mass of agriculture industry into four parts to be four types of hybrid space. Then added up the data within each part respectively to form four values of X. Instead, I figured out four values of K according to the positively related relationship between X and K. Finally, with four different K values, I explored various possible mix and organization modes for each hybrid space and selected four types for later plan design.

THE REFINEMENT OF SPACE During this phase, a series of agriculture production and processing processes were placed in four parts of the agriculture mass. There are four types of circulation in the project, they all have their own vertical traffic systems, and they meet in the hybrid space. The agricultural workers' circulation keeps its independence in most cases.
The vegetable production area could be the leisure interior garden for hotel guests to visit. In return, brand awareness could be promoted.
The greenhouse mainly makes soybean products, and visitors could participate in the production process with agricultural workers so that they can learn about agricultural culture.
The tofu processing exhibition area creates opportunities visitors to enjoy the processing process. Also, locals can increase their local identity in this space.
Around the commercial atrium, there are stores that selling tofu and vegetable products that traditional commercial center could not offer, which makes the commerce here gain a competitive edge.

The agriculture industry provides the hotel with entertainment resources such as tofu production, processing exhibition and air garden where hotel guests could relax themselves and learn about tofu culture. The hotel offers the accommodation for the researchers and government officials working in the agricultural institute.
HYBRID SPACE ON THE URBAN SCALE
UPLIFTING STREET __Community Library Focusing on the Incorporation of Urban Street
Street space is an important part of urban development and it should allow people to enjoy the culture and history of a city. Nevertheless, under the rapid urbanization, cities in China nearly become what Ludwig Hilberseimer said "Vertical City". And rapid transit system replaces mixeduse streets and provides people with only one purpose of traffic, largely decreasing the diversity of urban space. This is a project in which I tried to incorporate mixed-use streets on the urban scale into the roof of a community library and set various programs along those streets to serve multiple functions like walking, jogging, resting, viewing, reading, market, open lectures and so on. The building itself, in some way, is a landscape infrastructure that encourages different activities to take place and connects different parts around the site in harmonious way.

STEPS OF FORMATION
In order to respond to the current site situation, the design is conceived as a landscape infrastructure to create a micro-city block scene. The organizational mode between a mixed-use street and programs on its sides is imitated and transformed into an architectural scale project. Unlike a rectangular building, the building has a slope that uplifts the street, which brings different experience. it can be crossed over. Site

The Huaihe Road pedestrian mall in the central of the city is famous for its mid-range market that provides retailing and restaurant services. A po ssi bl e c i r c ul a t i o n f r o m site to this area should be concerned.
The Xiaoyao Jing park is the most renowned resort in the city, and the Shouchun bridge has a long history. How to interact with both of them should be considered in the design.
The site is at the corner of Shengli Road. Thus, the design should leave a suitable area open to allow drivers to see road conditions well, and provide space for crowd gathering.
The residential buildings in the community are mostly 12 stories high and the community has a high plot ratio of 2.2. Thus, an open public area should be created to increase comfort degree.
This is a another neighborhood with high plot ratio. The project will be passed when people go to the commercial area from the community. Thus, the project should be more than just a community library.
THE SLOPE ROOF STREET SYSTEM The roof has two different types of circulation. The walking circulation is circuitous and zigzag while the running circulation is straight. And the programs up and down the slope surface provides places for people to stop, rest and participate in various activities. The slope gradient and the scenes are constantly changing when people walk or running on the roof.

NEW READING EXPERIENCE This is the section of one part of the library, and you can see reading here is not a private activity and a sedentary lifestyle. People could easily get access to diversified public activities and when they feel tired reading, they could take some exercise on the roof, and see the beautiful scenery.
MORE THAN A LIBRARY In this project, I wanted to create an image that architecture is also a landscape infrastructure in the urban environment. It offers more possibilities for spontaneous activities, and enables people to enjoy the life between walking and stopping.

COMBINABLE MODULE __Bamboo Unite Focusing on Fabrication and Transformation
Nowadays, modernism architectural design pattern with function first in China limits the building flexibility to some extent. For example, though ramp garage is economical and easy to build, people find it hard to use it for other functions when there are fewer cars needed to be parked. So this is a waste of resources. A building with high level of adaptability must be neutral enough to respond to its surroundings. In this project, a standard bamboo structure module was designed to expand from different directions according to the site and programs. And most work was done focusing the hybrid space on the human scalefabricating a singe bamboo unite to accommodate different activities of one or two people.

SITE NEEDS The owner of the house wanted to make their balcony more efficient. The previous balcony is face toward the west, and open to the sky. It is directly exposed to the sun and rain. In most cases, owner would not go there. So an efficient shading device is needed.

As the structure is flexible and could be grouped to lager scale space, diversity of activities could be increased. It can be a tea house, a gallery or even a studio or residence.

FABRICATION AND INSTALLATION The biggest challenge in the process was to bent the bamboo to a certain shape. In order to do this, we had to heat the bamboo evenly for a very long time, and then bend it. It was a very laborious and time-consuming task and it was pretty possible to broke it during the bending process for some uncertainties. We tried many times even to make a desirable one.
TRANSFORMER I Four bamboo modules could be grouped into a square-like project where more types of activities could happen.

TRANSFORMER II More bamboo unites could be grouped into rectangular-like project. And some unites could be taken out to bring changes to the form. It can accommodate more programs.

As the fact that the site has elevation difference, one part has to sink to fit in the ground.
A courtyard was set to allow nature to come in. And a kitchen was placed right by the courtyard.

These are the typical scenes of Chinese ancient living environment. Look out of the arch, you could see a beautiful courtyard with a flourishing tree. The image reminds me of an open yard in front of our house in my childhood. Such yard was a mixed place where diversified activities took place. It could be an entrance, communal space and co-working space. Everyone shared a harmonious bond with each other in that environment.
05 ANCIENT ARCHITECTURE MAPPING
However, under the rapid urbanization in China, a lot of valuable hybrid space like the yard is missing. This impelled me to explore similar types of space in most of my undergraduate work. I hope that more hybrid space could be created in future China's urban environment.
