M U M B A I R E S I D E Project Type: Competition Studio: Professor Jean Caldieron, Design 8 Group Members: Aren Castro, Navah Davis Date: Spring 2018 Location: Mumbai, India “Rapid urban growth and growing inequality has created a global crisis in housing that increasingly segregates the rich from the poor. This competition called for speculation on these urban conditions within the historical fishing community in Mumbai, India, the Koliwada. entrants were to include a mixed-use residential development at the northern tip of the more undeveloped portion of the area. Strategic interventions would occur in stages, implementing first, simple services, such as clean water and safe facilities throughout the existing slum. The inclusion of a coastal park created a connection between the different classes of residents that reside all around this edge of the mahim bay as well as those on ocean side. At the very tip of the peninsula, an educational facility and hostel would provide opportunities for the less wealthy residents within the slums to receive closer, more accessible education, and would also allow the outside world to experience their lifestyles firsthand.
COMMUNITY CENTERED INTERVENTIONS WITH REGIONAL ATTRACTION
KALINA ESTER NAVAH DAVIS AREN CASTRO
FOR AN ALREADY THRIVING COMMUNITY, THE PROPOSED INTERVENTION DOES NOTHING TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE EXISTING, RICH URBAN FABRIC, BUT RATHER, ATTEMPTS TO ENHANCE IT THROUGH DYNAMIC MEANS. WITH FOCUSES ON RECREATION AND EDUCATION AT THE COMMUNITY SCALE, KOLIWADA BEGINS TO ESTABLISH NOT ONLY READILY AVAILABLE AMENITITES, BUT AN ALTERNATE MEANS OF PEDESTRIAN FLOW THROUGH THE CITY. BY CONNECTING THE NEW PROGRAMATIC SPACES ABOVE THE EXISITNG FABRIC, THE CULTURE, COMMERCIALISM, AND DAILY LIFE OF THE SLUM IS PRESERVED AND IMPROVED UPON UPWARDS.

THE PROJECT AIMS TO introduce infrastructure that offers an emancipating armature of education, employment, transport and public space across the favelas without disturbing the social ecology existing on the ground.
Driven by the belief that every child deserves safe and healthy play spaces, lead- Architect Martina Spies and her team have now built nine playgrounds, called "Urban Flowers", with local art and handicraft in Mumbai and Chennai.
By transforming unused spaces IN HIGH VIOLENCE ZONES, projects sought to create “social dynamics that invite new ways of living in communities, transforming categories that rule the daily life: the use of time and space.”

[BAND] SCAPE Project Type: Master Plan Studio: Professor Jeffery Huber, Design 9 + 10 Group Members: Aren Castro, Rachel Holmstock, Flavia Chiste Date: Fall 2018 - Spring 2019 Location: Jupiter, FL, USA The FAU John D. Macarthur campus currently embodies many of the issues that come with modern day suburban archipelagos. [BAND]Scape aims to enhance the learning/living environment by remidiating the separation from the outside community present on the existing campus. Stage 1 in bridging those barriers includede a reorientation of the campus axis towards the Abacoa community and banding together distinct campus programatic elements, [EDU]Scape, [LIVE]Scape, and [MIND]Scape. In order to socially activate the core of the campus, a ‘social channel’ was dug out to stitch together these three very different elements of the new campus master plan. Lastly, in order to create a visual presence for this new Jupiter FAU campus, iconic gateways were created at the important intersections with the outside community.
