001. Brief 4500 sq. ft. of co-working space in downtown Austin to be purposefully redesigned as a live-work-play environment. Couple Andrea (yogi) and Heather (dancer) are in need of a space to instruct dance and yoga classes, rent out office space for additional income, as well as have a place to live.

002. Concept

Derived from the health and emotional benefits of breath that brought Heather and Andrea together through their meditation practices, and similar to the awareness of breath, that meditation brings to the body, the design of Exhale focuses on the contrast between habitual & meaningful breath.

003. Solution Exhale will bring the awareness of health and positivity through intentional design and material choices. This will be conveyed with a centralized courtyard on each level, a cool, restoring color palette and organic architectural floor and ceiling features, creating fluid transitions between spaces. The three levels will transition upwards from public to private spaces. The bottom floor will serve as a fully functioning studio for Andrea and Heather’s practice. The second floor will be acccessed through a separate entrance where office space can be rented, providing extra income for the couple. Lastly the third floor will accommodate Andrea and Heather’s living needs.

001. Brief

NEXT, a private medical group based out of Portland, Oregon with the reputation of teambased collaboration and care is working to expand their offices to Seattle, Washington. The 12,000 sq.ft. space on the fourth floor of an existing office building will house the newest multi-disciplinary extension of the company. One of the company’s main goals is to enhance multi-generational activity and employee productivity.

002. Concept Perspective. 1. The art of drawing objects on a 2D surface in order to give the right impression of their position in relation to each other when viewed from a particular point. 2. A particular attitude toward or way of regarding something; a point of view Shifting the users perspectives towards that of areas which promote health and wellbeing

003. Solution With careful consideration of the multi-generational atmosphere that Next is seeking to enhance, a balance of advanced technology and intimate “heads down” work spaces, as well as small group collaboration areas, were incorporated into the space. This allows for every generation to feel comfortable and gives opportunities for adaptation. In these spaces employees perspective’s are subconsciously encouraged and directed towards specific objectives such as: rejuvenation, knowledge and nature. Creating a holistic approach where both clinic and corporate offices fully function as one in order to achieve a leading medical care experience for employees and patients alike.

A d a p t i v e R e u s e Studio IIII - Buda, Tx. Library + City Hall Redesign 001. Brief

Located in Buda, Texas, between San Antonio and Austin, sit two city buildings, the city library and city hall. Due to Buda’s growth rate, both buildings will soon be vacant because they have outgrown the abilities of their shells. The library will specifically be converted into a visitor center, along with the occasional use as an event venue and office space for the Main Street Program. The building that the city hall resides in is open to interpretation for what the design team sees fit to help the town prosper. The citizen’s opinions have been taken into consideration when planning the types of spaces the current city hall will transform into.

002. Concept

The design for the two Buda municipal buildings is based on the idea that Buda serves as a resting place between the activities of two major cities. This idea is exemplified by the metaphor of the town’s characteristically flat land that is surrounded by topographically rich and high-traffic regions, specifically, Austin and San Antonio. Due to this, Buda is a perfect place of rest for travelers and locals alike.

003. Solution

This idea will be shown in both plans through intentional central areas of “rest”, surrounded by spaces of movement and activity. Building materials associated with city densities (steel, glass and concrete) and grid references will be used in places of high activity throughout the buildings. Contrastingly, building materials associated with rural densities (wood and rock), combined with layered textures and organic forms, will be used, specifically in restful areas, to ground the spaces in the integrity of the town in which they reside. Lastly, repetition of line will be used in reference to the concentric lines that make up topographic maps.

003. Solution

Located in Austin, Texas, this home is specifically designed for a multi-generational family. Incorporation of universal design was a necessity in order for the family to live comfortably without restrictions and for every member to have full accessibility throughout the home.

A large, traditional oak table that upholds ideals of connection, engagement, community and social inclusion. A symbol for a place where families and friends can gather and share positive experiences with lasting memories.

A central living and eating area focused around the large community table creates a platform for the remainder of the home’s function. Equality of private spaces, direct and equal access to public areas and a symmetrical floor plan are consistent themes throughout the home.
