Last year, Deere-Hitachi Machinery Corporation celebrated its 25th anniversary in Kernersville at its West Mountain Street location. Deere-Hitachi completed its largest expansion in the company’s history when it transformed a vacant warehouse into 383,000 square feet of manufacturing space and expanded the current factory by nearly 200,000 square feet, totaling $97 million. Overall, the expansion will add an additional 347 full-time employees to the more than 700 strong already employed at the factory.

According to Kernersville Community Development Director Jeff Hatling, the new conveyers will allow FedEx Ground to increase its distribution capabilities by 40 percent. “It also permits for a multi-story conveyor system,” explained Hatling. The project will be completed in phases and should be finished by spring 2015.

Last year, flu vaccine distributor FFF Enterprises, Inc. announced that it had selected a location inside Triad Business Park, located just east of FedEx Ground, on which to build an 80,000 square foot East Coast logistics center and specialty pharmacy. The company plans to invest $7.6 million in the project and create an estimated 31 jobs over the course of the next three years. According to FFF Enterprise, Inc. CEO Patrick M. Schmidt, the company selected Triad Business Park after an extensive search because of its location. The privately-owned company employs 200 people throughout the U.S. and has more than 48,000 customers nationwide. In addition to flu vaccines, the company also distributes critical-care biopharmaceuticals and other plasma products.

The plaza is home to Cornerstone Internal Medicine and Dr. Victoria Nnadi (below), as well as Cornerstone Pediatric Associates of Kernersville.

Last year, Sheetz opened a second Kernersville store on Hwy. 66 South to accompany its existing one on North Main Street. The new location is the largest outside the company’s headquarters in Pennsylvania, Hatling said. ville during the 2008 economic downturn and then slow move toward recovery over the past six years has been large scale projects and expanding, at the same time spurring other types of development in the area. “Kernersville was fortunate during the recession that some of these large corporations were expanding,” said Hatling.

Hatling also said the Town’s Community Development Department is working with Carrollton, a mixed-use development located on Old Salem Road off Hwy. 66 South near Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, on its potential layout of road, water and sewer. The Town recently approved 20 new lots in the Caleb’s Creek development that will serve as single-family residential. Hatling’s office is currently working with the Caleb’s Creek owner on the golf course design. Off Union Cross Road, the

Novant Health continues to grow with the Kernersville community The Kernersville community has seen significant growth in the past 12 to 14 months, and the healthcare community has expanded as well. Novant Health, the largest health system in the community continues to grow and offer more services. The NCDOT continues its work to widen Union Cross Road from Sedge Garden Road north of I-40 to Wallburg Road just south of U.S. 311 (left) and install a diverging diamond interchange at the interstate (above). NCDOT officials say that the new interchange will allow traffic moving in two directions to temporarily cross to the left side of the road and will provide motorists easier access to I-40 and decrease congestion and collisions in the area. The Union Cross project has an anticipated cost of $30.3 million and should be finished by November 2015.

The NCDOT’s Macy Grove Road improvement project from Industrial Park to N.C. 150/North Main Street will close the current Colfax/U.S. 421 exit and convert Macy Grove Road into an interchange at Business 40 and widen Macy Grove Road to multiple lanes. The project will extend Macy Grove Road from Old Greensboro Road to north of Old U.S. 421/East Mountain Street and construct a bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad and East Mountain Street (above). The $39 million project should be completed in October 2015.

The $426 million Caterpillar Inc. facility continues to add to its workforce at the company’s mining truck axle manufacturing plant on Temple School Road, just off Union Cross Road. The local plant now employs 315 fulltime employees, up 57 percent from 2013. The company’s goal is to create 329 full-time jobs and more than 100 contract positions by the end of 2015.

The $1.3 million project will involve adding turn lanes at the North Church and Nelson streets intersections across from Hess and Rite Aid. New sidewalks will run the length of the widened area on the same side of the road as the turn lanes and will wrap around Nelson Street on the opposite side. In addition, crews will extend the sidewalk along Nelson Street in front of Lowes Foods down to the Food Lion shopping center on North Main Street and in front of Farmer’s Feed and Seed.

Last year, Indiana-based Celadon Trucking (below) acquired TCI Logistics in Kernersville (above) in an asset purchase which was completed in October 2013. The company purchased all of TCI Logistics’ equipment, tractors and trailers and is operating in the South Park Drive terminal.

In October 2012, Deere-Hitachi Construction Machinery Corporation announced its largest expansion project in the company’s 24-year history in Kernersville. The company has invested $97 million to expand its manufacturing capacity and hire an additional 347 full-time employees over a four-year period. The project called for the purchase of 60 acres of land to the east of its existing facility, transforming a vacant warehouse into 383,000 square feet of maufacturing space and expanding the current factory by nearly 200,000 square feet.

In late 2012, Herbalife Ltd., a nutritional products company based in Los Angeles, Calif., announced that it planned to convert the former Dell Plant off Union Cross Road into a $100 million manufacturing and distribution center. According to company officials, the biggest part of construction on the facility is completed and production is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2014.

Zaxby's received approval by the Town in February 2014 to construct a restaurant at the corner of East Mountain and Hwy. 66.

KÜrner’s Folly on South Main Street successfully completed a matching fund challenge in 2013 to raise $150,000 for restoration efforts to stabliize the historic home's structure and replacing the roof. A new matching $100,000 challenge will go toward repairing interior fireplaces.

In 2013, the Town of Kernersville approved officially changing the name of Beeson Park, located off Shields Road, to the Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex.

McDonald's on Heartland Drive near Interstate 40 in Kernersville underwent a complete tear-down and rebuild in 2013. The restaurant reopened in early 2014. Triad Baptist Church on South Main Street is currently undertaking a major campus expansion that includes construction of a 44,460 square-foot multi-purpose facility to be utilized as a worship center and gymnasium for Triad Baptist Christian Academy.

The War Memorial Foundation broke ground on the eight-acre, $5 million Carolina Field of Honor at Triad Park in September 2013 with plans for the veterans memorial to be dedicated by Memorial Day in 2014. The memorial will honor those who have served the United States military in all branches of service. On February 19, the memorial’s 60-ft. granite obelisk monument was set into place. A few days later, U.S. Senator Richard Burr visited the memorial site and was greeted by foundation board members William “Bill” Moss and Rob O’Hanlon, both former Marines.
