months, industrial growth in and around Kernersville has been a mix of both new development and the expansion of existing facilities, equating to hundreds of thousands of square feet of development. Last year, Deere-Hitachi Machinery Corporation celebrated its 25th anniversary in Kernersville at its West Mountain Street location. Deere-Hitachi completed its largest expansion in the company’s history when it transformed a vacant warehouse into 383,000 square feet of manufacturing space and expanded the current factory by nearly 200,000 square feet, totaling $97 million. Overall, the expansion will add an additional 347 full-time employees to the more than 700 strong already employed at the factory.

operations in its 410,000 square foot hub facility in Triad Business Park in October 2011, announced that it will expand its distribution operation at the location by 83,000 square feet, adding a two-story conveyer system. According to Kernersville Community Development Director Jeff Hatling, the new conveyers will allow FedEx Ground to increase its distribution capabilities by 40 percent. “It also permits for a multi-story conveyor system,” explained Hatling. The project will be completed in phases and should be finished by spring 2015.

Regarding industrial development in Kernersville, Hatling said locally owned and operFedEx Ground, which began ated Pope Companies has seen

numerous developments with its properties, including construction of a new 43,000 square foot industrial building. There have also been countless uplifts within industrial buildings to accommodate growth and development, added Hatling. Last year, flu vaccine distributor FFF Enterprises, Inc. announced that it had selected a location inside Triad Business Park, located just east of FedEx Ground, on which to build an 80,000 square foot East Coast logistics center and specialty pharmacy. The company plans to invest $7.6 million in the project and create an estimated 31 jobs over the course of the next three years. According to FFF Enterprise, Inc. CEO Patrick M. Schmidt, the company selected Triad Business Park after an extensive search because of its location. The privately-owned company employs 200 people throughout the U.S. and has more than 48,000 customers nationwide. In addition to flu vaccines, the company also distributes critical-care biopharmaceuticals and other plasma products.

Commercial and Retail Growth Commercial and retail growth throughout Kernersville has been active over the last 15 to 18 months, with new businesses planned and opening, said Hatling. High Point Regional Health System’s Regional Medical Plaza (above) is located at 861 Old Winston Road. The plaza is home to Cornerstone Internal Medicine and Dr. Victoria Nnadi (below), as well as Cornerstone Pediatric Associates of Kernersville.

Last year, Sheetz opened a second Kernersville store on Hwy. 66 South to accompany its existing one on North Main Street. The new location is the largest outside the company’s headquarters in Pennsylvania, Hatling said. Also on Hwy. 66 South, McDonald’s saw a complete teardown and rebuild of its location near Interstate 40. The new fastSee “Development” Page 6

Overall, Hatling said the Town has been tracking growth since 1995 and that the economy has experienced peaks and valleys, where growth experiences large phases of build out at the high end of the spectrum, and then periods where the market absorbs that growth. One of the things that helped Kerners-

Hatling also said the Town’s Community Development Department is working with Carrollton, a mixed-use development located on Old Salem Road off Hwy. 66 South near Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School, on its potential layout of road, water and sewer. The Town recently approved 20 new lots in the Caleb’s Creek development that will serve as single-family residential.
