Global Warming: Greenhouse Gases While burning fossil fuels for electricity, heat, and transportation is all part of our daily lives, we need to be more careful. These activities release high levels of carbon dioxide, methane, and other pollutants and are the main cause of global warming. Global warming is a gradual increase in the temperature of the earth's atmosphere. It causes the earth to warm at a rapid rate, makes the sea level rise, and it is endangering many organisms and their habitat. Life on Earth depends on energy coming from the sun. According to NASA “ About half the light reaching Earth's atmosphere passes through the air and clouds to the surface, where it is absorbed and then radiated upward in the form of infrared heat. Most of this heat is then absorbed by something called greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases, mainly carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O)—absorb the infrared radiation”. The heat does not directly escape into space, but it is radiated back toward the earth's surface causing an increase in temperature. The greenhouse gases are causing temperatures to increase twice as fast as the global rate, sparking an array (chain) of changes. These higher temperatures are causing the icebergs to melt, but more importantly, are melting the polar ice caps. A polar ice cap is a region of land covered in ice. This includes the North and South pole. Melting is a serious issue and can have serious consequences for everyone on Earth. Besides being important for humanity, ice caps help regulate temperatures and the sea level. Temperature Polar ice caps also reflect light back into space. If the Polar ice caps melt it will increase the temperature of Earth and add to the damage already done. Not only does it cause further damage, but it also affects animals that live in these polar regions. Polar bears typically live in these regions and the melting is destroying their habitat. The changes have caused the species to become vulnerable to extinction. Sea Level If the melting continues the sea level will increase several feet, threatening coastal areas like New York, Los Angeles, and Miami. These higher sea levels will push people and wildlife out of their homes.

Ultimately, human activities are harming the Earth’s environment and harming animals. If the production of greenhouse gases don’t slow down, then problems will start to pop up and the results will be catastrophic. Global warming is a serious issue and it needs to be confronted. There is no way to reverse the damage already done, but there is a way to prevent further damage and that is by
