LOOKING BACK, MOVING FORWARD ANONYMOUS STUDENT REPORTS ANTI-SEMITIC BEHAVIOR IN FRATERNITY

First shared on Instagram account @jewishoncampus, anonymous testimony from a UK student alleges that members of a UK fraternity greeted a Jewish fraternity brother with Nazi salutes on more than one occasion.

“After telling them I was actually Jewish, they continued to do it even more, laughing about it,” the testimony says.

The anonymous student said they “always noticeably wear” a Star of David necklace and have a tattoo in Hebrew, and that they originally joined the fraternity as a way to make friends.

Sources declined to name the fraternity in order to protect the anonymous individual.

Following the report, Interfraternity Council issued a statement on Instagram condemning bias of all kinds.

“We are absolutely disgusted and upset by the behavior of those members,” the statement from IFC’s Diversity and Inclusion chair, Brandon Brown, said. But Jewish studentss say the statement was not enough.

“It seemed very generic and vague and non-descriptive of the situation, which if we’re going to call out anti-Semitism, we have to be very concrete and direct about it because it is so normalized and so often hard to pinpoint, although this one feels pretty easy to pinpoint,” said Melanie Gelernter, presidenet of Kentucky Hillel. The anonymous student who shared the testimony spoke to Gelernter about the incidents.

“He did say it wasn’t the fraternity that has these anti-Semitic tendencies, it was just a group of anti-Semitic individuals who happen to be members of that fraternity,” Gelernter, a UK senior, said. Hillel is drafting a formal letter of concern to submit to the university both to speak up for Jewish students and to kickstart the student conduct processs. Gelernter said the office of Fraternity and Sorority Life said they cannot pursue an investigation without a formal complaint.

Gelernter was formerly the chair of diversity and inclusion for UK Panhellenic, the organization that oversees many of UK’s so-

roritiees. She said that though anti-Semitism is not common in UK’s Greek life, she is concerned about the handling of this event, especially since a Jewish fraternity is set to join campus next year.

“It’s just a little bit scary to think about,” Gelernter said. “If there are anti-Semitic incidents in Greek life and they’re potentially not being handled maybe the way they should be this year, what’s going to happen next year when there’s even more of a spotlight on Jewish Greek students?”

This is not the first anti-Semitic incident reported on UK’s campus. The Jewish Student Center has been vandalized repeatedly in the last five years.

UK SHARES DATA FROM VACCINE DISTRIBUTION On Thursday, April 8, UK administered its milestone 200,000th dose of COVID-19 vaccine. The following day, UK administrators gave the campus community its first clear look at vaccination rates.

According to UK spokesperson Jay Blanton, 57 percent of UK students are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. That number includes students in healthcare colleges, who received vaccines in the first phases, and an additional 14,000 students. Another 3,000 students have requested vaccine or have received their first dose and await the booster shot.

According to the information shared by UK president Eli Capilouto, UK is leading colleges across the country by offering vaccinees to 21,000 admitted students - students accepted to UK for fall 2021 who have or have not enrolled - and their families.

Capilouto also shared data on vaccination rates among UK employees. According to his email, more than 10,000 UK HealthCare employees have been fully vaccinated, more than 93% of UKHC’s workers. Of the 19,000 faculty and staff on the academic campus, 78% of faculty and 64% of staff are fully vaccinated and additional members of those populations have vaccinations in progress.

UK urges all students and community members to get vaccinated as the administration expects to have many open appointments in the next few weeks.

LOOKING BACK CONT. DANCEBLUE RAISES $1 MILLION FOR CANCER CARE COVID-19 couldn’t stand in the way of DanceBlue’s “Sweet Sixteen”: in its sixteenth year of fundraising, the organization raised over $1 million for pediatric cancer care.

DanceBlue’s 2021 marathon, which culminates a year of fundraising, was the first marathon to be held virtually. The shorter, remote plan featured a pen pal program, pre-recorded talent show and activity boxes mailed to cancer patients to emulate the in-person activities of years past.

This year’s funds bring the total amount raised by DanceBlue to $18,313,158.94, which has gone to the Golden Matrix fund in support of the Markey Cancer Center at UK Hospital.

“I am extremely proud of everyone involved,” overall chair Allie Holt said afterward. “I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out.”

Though this is the first year since its beginning that DanceBlue has not surpassed the previous year’s total, Holt believes the ability to raise such a large amount amidst the chaos showcases the devotion of all of those who contribute toward the event.

“It speaks to the spirit of DanceBlue,” she said. “We are honestly thrilled.”

Programming chair Morgan Thurza

echoed Holt’s sentiment.

“It was awesome... it by far exceeded every expectation that I had,” she said.

“Could not have asked for a better day... there are not enough words to explain how great it feels.”

One of the biggest things that allowed the marathon to proceed was the prevalence of Zoom and other video technology. Both Thurza and Holt attributed the smooth operation to their tech team, which kept it all running effectively and efficiently throughout the afternoon and evening.

Though the number of dancers was a signficant decrease from earlier years - 333 to 2020’s 900 plus - video technology allowed DanceBlue to reach more people across the country than ever before.

For key events like the 5k and silent auction, DanceBlue saw an increase in participants from out of state and hope to continue that reach in future years.

NEW SECURITY MEASURES AT UK HOSPITAL All patients and visitors entering emergency rooms in UK Hospitals will now be screened with handheld detectors, beginning on April 6.

Fixed metal detectors will be installed in the future as part of a series of security measures in response to “increasing reports of violence taking place across the nation in

CONTACT health care settings,” according to a release from UK public relations.

The additional measures at UK come two weeks after a man armed with multiple guns entered UK’s emergency room to visit a family member and was arrested by police, who found explosive devices in his car. The resulting shutdown detoured ambulances away from UK Chandler Hospital and closed roads around the hospital for four hours before law enforcement gave the all clear.

SOFTBALL SPLITS SERIES WITH GEORGIA

A Sunday double-header that arose out of Saturday’s weather left the Cats 1-1 against no. 20 Georgia, as UK took the first game 11-3 and UGA the second.

Freshman shortstop Erin Coffel added to her home run total in the first match up, smashing a hit to left field with two runners on base in the bottom of the third, giving Kentucky the 5-1 advantage.

Georgia’s comeback in the second game was fueled by two three-run home runs from Jayda Kearney and Sara Mosley, who gave UGA their first lead of the day in the seventh inning. Kentucky’s strongest showing came from Kayla Kowalik, who also recorded her 60th hit this season - the most by any Division One softball player in the nation.

IN THIS EDITION Kentucky, the country, the world, are in a time of transformation, teetering between a known world and a possible one.

The city of Lexington is no different, straddling the line between winter and spring, between sun and storms, between the COVID-19 pandemic and whatever comes next.

This liminal period can be confusing, with each day a seeming clash of opposing forces. Where some of your neighbors have resumed their pre-pandemic activities, others have recommitted to staying indoors.

Where Lexington children are happy to be back in the classroom, Lexington dogs are sad that their playmates are no longer at

home. Where vaccine providers were once overwhelmed by demand, some sites now struggle to fill vacant appointments.

This edition is in part an effort to capture these transitions. For many people, including Kernelites, this spring has been equally maddening and comforting - like standing outside the glass window of a candy shop before opening time and looking in at all the good things that await us, but knowing we have to wait just a bit more.

This second COVID spring is bound up in all those changes as we get a small taste of normalcy. On Saturday, April 10, Kernelites set out to document this strange new world we find ourselves in, one half open

and half closed, where Lexingtonians are tentatively emerging from their shelters to find things aren’t quite the same.

So in the next 18 pages, you will find a microcosm of one day in this new, onthe-way to post-COVID world. From horse racing to youth soccer, art museums to skateboard parks, we aimed to paint a portrait of what Lexington, Kentucky was like for one day in 2021.

The 12 hours represented in this paper - officially 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., though you’ll find snippets from either side - don’t tell the whole story of what we saw around town. But they tell most of it, and they tell us that we’re all in this together.

THROUGH THE MORNING MIST Early workouts at Keeneland a comfort

Anything that could be called morning chill has entirely burned off by just after sunrise on Saturday morning. I am not as cold as I might be, and not as tired as I should be, despite this time being a full four hours before I usually wake But Keeneland is already a buzz of activity and has been for hours.

We arrive at Keeneland after a short drive, during which the tinge of morning faded from a lingering purple night to a bright blue. I am writing about morning workouts, and Michael Clubb is photographing morning workouts. The first thing we do at the track is sit down.

We think we have missed the conclusion of the most recent set of workouts.

The early morning hours at Keeneland are dedicated to horses going through their paces in anticipation of race day, but at the moment the track is occupied solely by tractors raking over the surface. After a few quiet minutes in which I mistake two tractors on the far side of the track for horses, we get up to see where the action is.

“These things wrong, like a like a welloiled factory because you’ve got 30 minutes for each set, and you’ve got to get them out and then cool down and wash down and saddle for the next one,” said Amanda Luby, a horse owner based in Saratoga. “It’s fascinating to me, you have to have some seriously good organizational skills to run a good barn.”

On the backside of the race stands, the paddock where horses are led to the track, three horses are being led through a gate, so we head in that direction to find the next set of horses preeping for their turn on the track. Jockeys, trainers, exercise rid-

ers, stable hands and of course horses go back and forth between the main track and the stables. Michael hovers in front of the stable entrance waiting for “this shot [he] wants.”

Left to my own devices, I quickly wander to the viewer side of the fence where these horses (they’re very tall) wait to be released onto the track. One horse with

some obvious nervous energy, practically chomping at the bit (the bit is the mouth part right?) trots around in a circle for at least seven minutes in a row (#relatable).

In the backstory I made up in my head, this horse - which is somewhere between brown and dark brown, for people who know about these things - was high-strung as a foal and it took far longer than it did

to train him than it did for the other yearlings because he had an unbridled need to free that was incompatible with human schedules, but through a series of circumstances a lá an episode of Canadian soap opera Heartland came to have a deep, abiding respect and partnership with mankind, with whom he will now embark on a racing See MORNING on page 5

journey for the ages. But probably that’s not what happend.

The other half of my mind is calculating the likelihood that one of these horses will wander just close enough for me to reach through the fence and touch it and the subsequent likelihood of that leading to Something Really Bad Happening and immediately ditching the idea because I do not have the equity to sustain that kind of lawsuit. (Lovely Keeneland people, please know that I would never actually do this). Anyway, basic thoughts thus far: horses nice.

Horses pretty.

This batch of horses is soon released onto the track, where they go through a series of runs at different speeds, which I hear are called gallops, trots and canters.

I also hear jockeys and exercise riders calling to each other in multiple languages, proof of the kind of community people in the horse industry say can be found at morning workouts in particular.

“You get to reconnect with people here in a less pressured environment.

Obviously, if you’ve got a horse working, there’s a lot of pressure that the horse works, because you’re obviously training for a race,” Luby said of morning workouts. “But at the end of the day, it’s just a really special place where you can share some camaraderie with folks or just come out here by yourself or just revel in the moment.”

Or, you can be a nosy reporter scouting out non-intimidating people to interview. I thought about talking to a man in an official looking vest, but he had a clipboard so he was clearly busy. But that’s another special part of morning workouts - everyone has time for a chat.

“You can be standing next to Barbara Banke, the chairman of the largest privately-held wine company in the world.

You could be hanging out with a Hall of Fame trainer. You never know where you’re going to be rubbing shoulders with at Keeneland,” Luby said. (Later, I saw the man with the clipboard chatting

with fans at the same coffee shop Luby named as a social spot). Luby, who lived in Lexington for seven years, is here on business - checking on her mares and trying to buy a racing horse (“That didn’t work out. But that’s the that’s the racing game, right?”). She came to Keeneland just to enjoy the beauty of the horses and the morning.

“There’s such a small microcosm of the world at the racetrack this time of day. There’s a stillness to it. But also, when you hear the horses galloping over the track, it’s something that is exciting as well,” Luby said. She likes getting to witness the hard work that goes into race day.

Some of that hard work is done by Paul Boylan, an exercise rider for Brian Cox. Boylan rides seven or eight horses a morning, putting them through whatever is assigned to their set list.

“Every horse is different. Every horse has a different attitude, every horse has a different character,” Boylan said. “It’s just what we love about it. You know, it’s just a nice job. Everyone I spoke to at Keeneland Keeneland in Lexington, Kentucky. had a different take on why humans are so fascinated by horses - but all agreed that the attraction is in no small part due to the animal’s sheer beauty.

“There’s nothing more majestic and awe- inspiring than seeing a Thoroughbred gallop,” Luby said, who said horses are the most beautiful creature in the world.

Conlee Zonio said horses have an elegance that makes them special. Jim Chambers said it’s the personality of horses.

“There’s also a centuries-old partnership between man and horse and we have continued to refine various breeds for different purposes. And obviously, the Thoroughbred was bred for racing, to be the most athletic horse out there,” Luby said.

Boylan said though people like animals in general, they like horses because they can be ridden.

“The thing about horses is you can get on them. You can’t get on your dog or you can’t get on your cat. Horses are just amazing animals,” Boylan said.

“You can ride them and you can gallop fast, it’s great. What’s not to like about it?”

Though speed is the name of the game in races, morning workouts have a different, more relaxed tone.

“You get to see the animals in their element and they’re happy and they’re out running that’s what they do. And just watching, the whole atmosphere is relaxed. They’re professionals at work, the horses, it’s just a great place to be,” said Chambers, who told me he “had ties” in the industry in a tone of voice that made me think he’s a super mega rich horse owner that I’m a fool for not recognizing (Google somewhat affirms this).

But for people with the races in mind, morning workouts are a good place to come to get insight into a horse’s performance.

“You can watch a horse’s body language in the morning, you can see even who’s maybe a little muscle sore, who’s maybe just taking a little bit of time, a little bit longer time to warm up, to see who’s peaking or who’s coming off of a peak,” Luby said. She added that for those looking to put a few dollars down on the ponies, morning workouts are a great place to do some homework.

That’s essentially what 15-year-old Zonio was doing at Keeneland, but not for placing bets. Zonio wants to be an exercise rider and came to learn from the best.

“This is my second time this week,” Zonio said, and she’s been able to speak to jockeys about their warmup techniques. Chambers prefers the mornings to races because of that same idea.

“The animals are relaxed and you also learn a lot in the morning,” Chambers said. “You’re around a lot of the professionals in the industry and most of them are very happy to teach you.”

And if you’re lucky, you may even

get to pet a horse (joy of joys!).

A Keeneland employee brought her horse, Jonas, over to the railing for children attending the morning workouts to pet. Several families were among Saturday’s crowd of around 100 people, pointing to the track and sayng things like “see that? That’s a pretty horsey.”

A small line soon formed to pet Jonas, who seemed born for these clumsy interactions.

“I love his blue eyes,” one girl said shyly. “Same colors as yours,” the rider replied. This benevolence is clearly intended for the children. I am no child.

Still, I absolutely waited my turn to pet this horse. And it was great.

Boylan also likes the relaxed atmosphere of morning workouts.

“At the races they’re all, the horses are very alert, they just want to just go out there and do it. But here in the morning that’s just chilled out the horses,” Boylan said. “This is what they love to do.”

Part of the appeal of morning workouts is the time, the sky sliding from dark to dawn, birds chirping and a new day rising. But some of it also has to do with a connection to nature - both horses and the green hills of Keeneland itself.

“I’ve been in tracks all over America, all over the world, and this is a nice place,” Boyland said. “This place does not feel crowded.”

For Chambers, Keeneland in the morning is his favorite place to be. Part of that is a lifelong love of horses.

“Once you get around them, you can’t get away from them,” Chambers said. The romance of racing is also an appeal.

“I’m not going to say it’s a great American story, where we love the underdog, and racing is one of the great leveling, leveling playing fields out there, where a good horseman, a good horse can come from anywhere,” Luby said. And though the high stakes adrenaline of an afternoon at the racing are unmatched, there is something to be said for the slow turn around the track, for coffee shared with friends new and old, for watching the morning rise through the mist.

Bullets overtake Rapids with dominant second half on opening day

In the distance, heaps of thunderclouds converged in preparation for a morning storm. But the clash of the heavens was nothing compared to the battle taking place on the far field of Masterson Station park, where under-14 teams the Rapids and the Bullets met for the first soccer match of the 2021 season.

The Bullets were anchored by their keeper Chase, who stayed in goal for the hour-long game and notched a series of excellent saves. A defensive-minded first half turned the contest into a battle of wills as the teams appeared exactly evenly matched.

The Rapids, in maroon for their season debut, took the first shot on goal in the 12’ minute, when a corner kick was nearly headed in but headed out by a defender from the Bullets, clad in blue.

After trading a series of corner kicks, the Rapids took another shot on goal that was blocked by Chase and the Bullets’ returning attempt narrowly missed the pipe.

Those close calls led up to the first goal by the Bulletss in the 21’ minute, followed by a third shot on goal.

The Rapids had a chance to equal when their striker beat all the defenders to have an open shot, but either the dew or nerves caused him to snub the shot. Another attempt in minute 30’ was blocked by the Bullets’ keeper.

yards out that arced just over the fingertips of the leaping goaltender, bringing the score to 1-1 heading into the half.

Shannon Hopper, whose son plays for the Rapids, said at the half that the team needed to convert attempts into goals to pull off the win.

“I would like to see some balls going in the goal and some better defense,” Hopper said. In this Lexington Youth Soccer Association game, she said the players

are most excited to see friends again after last spring’s season was canceled. By the time the second half began, the rust from the two-year hiatus had worn off and the Bullets came out kicking.

The Bullets scored in the first minute of the second half, sneaking a shot past the Rapids’ replacement keeper. That first goal brought the score to 2-1 but was only the beginning of a ceaseless onslaught by the Bullets that left the Rapids unable to keep up.

Bullets’ strikers scored twice in quick succession in the next seven minutes to bring the score to 3-1, then a fourth goal that slipped straight out of the keeper’s hands.

The Rapids attempted to rally and scored a second goal when a shot bounced off the crossbar and maroon jersey rushed in to close out the rebound.

But that effort seemed only to spur on the Bullets, who wore down their opponents with another three goal, one of which was

a lovely chip shot. Facing a five point deficit the Rapids got lucky when an off-the-crossbar shot rolled into the goal, but Chase managed to stop all direct shots in the remainder of the game to leave the final score of 7-3.

After outscoring the Rapids 6-2 in the second half, Bullets coach Donnie Wakefield said the outcome was due to renewed hustle.

“We had a few players that hadn’t played since they were about three,” Wakefield said.

“And so it’s just a learning curve, and hustle’s the name of the game. And that made a big difference for second half.”

Wakefield kept his post-game speech short as the rain began to fall and the games on other fields were called off. In the remaining stretch of the season, Wakefield would like to see his players have fun above all else.

“Be outdoors, enjoying things that’s the - you know, win or lose, it doesn’t matter,” Wakefield said.

“Just as long as they’re having fun and falling in love with the game.” His son plays on the the team and he is relieved to see the players able to socialize.

“It’s hard to keep them from chating, because they haven’t seen each other for so long,” Wakefield said. “But it’s actually a good thing. It gives them something to get them off the couch.”

Off the couch, indeed: the Bullets’ fighting form granted them a 1-0 start to the season, which will continue next Saturday.

Among flowers, friendships grow

Under shelter at Tandy Centennial Park, even the farmers get to enjoy the food, flowers and friends of the Lexington Farmers’ Market. The few employees at the downtown market give farmers who are working solo a few minutes to take a break and enjoy the surroundings, vibrant with colorful produce and on Saturday, colorful rain gear. Farmers take this time to explore the market and all that their fellow vendors have to offer.

“My favorite thing is all the people I get to meet from all over the state and all

over the country that come and visit. It’s a great tourist destination during the summer,” said Joshua England, a manager at the market. He reminisced about the Cold Brew Coffee Festival that the market hosted back in 2019, which was his favorite event. He said that although the farmerss market does not have a set date for this festival this year, they are planning to do it sometime in August.

The rain-or-shine market is held from 8:00 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday in April through October and vendors set up booths to sell cut flowers, herbs, hanging baskets, fruits and vegetables, beer and more. The busy, yet friendly atmosphere is fitting for

the heart of downtown Lexington, even on a Saturday more rainy than not.

Tara Lawson stood with a smile at her booth, settled at the edge of the marketplace. Baskets of flowers and succulents surrounded her as she reached over them to take the money of excited customers. It is her second year at the market with her business, Tara’s Plants and Petals.

“I think a lot of people have really wanted to start gardening at home,” Lawson said.

She said that even those who live downtown or in apartments with no yard whatsoever can still garden. She recommends getting hanging baskets, potted herbs, and

succulents—all of which her business offers-- for those who wish to have a little bit of green while still living in the middle of the city.

Just outside the crowd of customers sat Pat and Donnie Todd. Pat and Donnie call Lexington home, and decided to make their way to the Lexington Farmers’ Market just before heading to the Central Kentucky Home and Garden Show later Saturday. Donnie expressed their love for the produce as he pointed to a bag of tomatoes they had purchased.

booth, more isolated than many others, but still cheerful. This is her nineteenth year selling at the Lexington Farmers’ Market. Eggum said that her favorite part about being involved in the farmers’ market is watching her plants grow.

“I love watching something, you know, something from the size of the head of a pen become a meal,” Eggum said. Her and her nine employees harvest on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, go to market on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, and weed and plant on Tuesday and Thursday.

Amidst the many stands of plants sat Tim Buckingham, the Events Coordinator for West Sixth Brewing.

“You know, our capacity is limited, but what’s actually been really neat is the

farmers’ market has become a really huge source of sales for us over the year,” Buckingham said. West Sixth Brewing began setting up and selling at the market on Saturdays and Sundays in 2016.

This farmers’ market is not the only one that West Sixth Brewing sets up at; they go to a few different locations across the state to farmers’ markets, in addition to selling their beer in stores, according to Buckingham. He said that his favorite thing about coming to the market is the social aspect.

He stressed the importance of this social gathering that was Covid-safe, but still allowed for friends to catch up and for relationships with community members to build.

Another day, another dose at vaccine clinic

The brisk April breeze played with the flaps on a series of white vinyl tents, the tunnel through people enter the Kroger Field vaccine site and await their ‘shot of hope.’ On Saturday, April 10, the morning air was filled with a sense of expectation, excitement and hope as UK continued administering thousands of shots a day.

Many of those in line held white vaccination cards; they had already

made the pilgrimage to the football stadium-turned clinic once before and were returning for their booster shot. For others, this was their first time getting a COVID vaccine, their excitement adding to the celebratory mood. While most patrons were from Lexington, a large number came from surrounding cities and counties, some driving over an hour to receive a shot.

Non-medical volunteers in bright reflective vests directed traffic flow, assisted with wheelchairs,

checked people in and offered friendly “Hellos” to patrons.

This particular Saturday was “CI Day;” most volunteers working the 8 a.m.

- 1:30 p.m. shift were faculty and students from the UK College of Communication and Information.

Among those in attendance were College of CI Dean Jennifer Greer, Integrated Strategic Communication Director of Undergraduate Studies Dr. Beth Barnes and journalism professor Jen Smith.

“Getting to work at the

vaccine clinic made me feel like I was contributing, helping to beat this awful virus,” Smith said. “I’ve been wanting to do something, anything, to feel like I’m helping get rid of the virus, so when our college came up with this plan to work at the vaccine clinic, I was so excited to be a part of it.”

Although the morning weather was mild, dark clouds and the forecast threatened a downpour until the floodgates opened around 11 a.m. Rain pelted the vinyl tents, under which

volunteers stood welcoming people and giving directions to the clinic at Gate 10. As the morning wore on, umbrellas and raincoats replaced sandals and shorts, and volunteers switched on the propane heaters in the tents to combat the chill.

Despite the weather, there was a steady stream of families, students and individuals. Spirits remained high as patrons eagerly awaited their first or second dose. One man asked jokingly if he was in the right line for the free donuts,

triggering laughter from his fellow patrons. UK students ran into friends while waiting their turn, making the line for a shot seem more like a social event.

Just a day after the university announced they had administered 200,000 doses, the influx of patrons was steady but slow.

Several veteran volunteers admitted that this Saturday’s crowd was the smallest they had ever seen, as the line to check in, See CLINIC on page 10

on most Saturdays wrapping around the corner of the stadium, rarely exceeded a dozen individuals.

The Kroger Field clinic typically serves around 4,000 people in a given day, according to a statement from the university.

Saturday’s turnout seemed a fraction of that number as UK spokesperson Jay Blanton told the Kernel UK has hundreds of open appointments in the next few weeks.

Although the inclement weather might have been a contributing factor, clinic volunteers cited the recent opening of other vaccine locations around Lexington as reasoning behind the low turnout seen at Kroger Field.

These new locations, both on- and off-campus, can now offer shots to all adults. The Commonwealth is one of several states in the U.S. that has opened up vaccines to people 16 years of age and older, and UK has become a hub for individuals across Kentucky to be tested and receive vaccinations.

Lower than average turnout aside, the patrons at the clinic seemed excited and cheerful to be there. Interacting with patrons and volunteers cheered a wet and chilly Saturday morning and showed why it is important to remain vigilant during the pandemic.

Ashley Gobeli, a UK sophomore majoring in communication, was one of the volunteers for CI Day. She appreciated the

opportunity to connect with fellow Kentuckians. “My favorite part was definitely being able to talk to all sorts of people and hearing bits and pieces of their story while also doing something good for the community,” Gobeli said.

No matter one’s major, background or availability, volunteering at the Kroger Field vaccination site is a unique way to get involved in the Lexington community and see the hope that COVID vaccines provide.

As the Commonwealth moves slowly but surely toward a more “normal” way of life, doing one’s part and giving back provides a feeling of camaraderie and purpose.

People see, people buy: imagination turns houses to homes at convention

2020 was the year the world stayed home: the COVID-19 pandemic confined most people to their homes for more time than they’d ever imagine, and what were once living room and kitchens became offices and schools.

After months of looking at the same four walls, many people found themselves on a home improvement. For Lexingtonians, The Home and Garden Show at the Central Bank Center was the perfect place to turn their dreams in reality.

The convention was hosted Friday, April 9 through April 11.

On Saturday, Lexington residents found themselves in the convention center obtaining free samples and décor ideas.

The floor of the showroom boasted a range of amenities for sale: hot tubs, cars, sun rooms were some of the big ticket items, though décor modeled after insects, specialty ellipticals to cure fibromyalgia and iced drinks were also offered.

“I want a pool, a fire pit, and I’m gonna extend some landscaping in the backyard with a little seating area, maybe a little secret garden,” Dianah Burton said.

“I’ve got a lot of goodies and I’ve been looking at the hot tubs.”

Patrons of the show could walk from one end of the room to the other and find themselves needing a new garage door or whimsical fairy garden landscape in their backyard.

were wearing masks, but others had it just below their noses, and some vendors didn’t mind going mask-less at all. Many people didn’t mind this one bit, though.

“I think everybody’s being safe. I’m fine, I’m happy to be here,” said Lexington resident Jay Howland said. “When you get to a certain age, home improvements are what you live for.”

Mini donuts, free samples and coffee lured in people from

all over Lexington. The line was long for these treats as people got ready to explore the convention.

Betsy Schein recently moved to Cardinal Valley from Kenwick and was looking for garden and plant inspiration for her new place.

“There’s a nice exhibition to make your own keychain from a Baby Lock sewing machine, too!” Schein said.

Forman were strolling around the home and garden show, excited that it was back this year.

“We don’t have anything specific in mind today, we just do this every year.” Sarah said. “Our favorite part has been getting to see everything, there’s been lots of free stuff.”

“We always end up spending more than we hoped,” Eric joked.

“I didn’t know we needed a front door, now we do.”

With the vast array of dazzling items, attendees fought not to succumb to a room full of advertisements. Even some of the exhibiters, there to sell their own products, couldn’t stop themselves from looking at the goodies around them. Bonnie Moore, who spent most of her time pitching a sunroom installation to patrons, decided to stop at Andreas Duffle and Tote Collection Jewelry, a shop featuring turquoise and crystal galore.

Hannah Prater checked out the Home and Garden show to get ideas about renovating her kitchen, bathroom, living room, basement and pretty much everything else in a new home.

“We’re getting some information on pricing and material offering and all that good stuff,” Prater said. “My dad’s a builder so he can double check and be like, well that’s legit.” She was even able to get her engagement ring cleaned.

This was the first Home and Garden show in Lexington since before the pandemic, since last year’s convention was canceled.

Sales-wise, the event was a success – even if not all attendees followed the precautions. But as patrons headed back home to wait out the rest of the pandemic, they had new trinkets and toys to change up the four walls that they’ve called work, home and everything else in the last year.

Starving for art, museum visitors get a taste of what they’ve longed for

After months of lockdown, digital experiences have only curbed the craving of art aficionados while many masterpieces are stuck behind closed doors. A picture and video can capture the beauty of painting or the emotions of photography, but there is

still a need for the sanctity of an in person viewing experience.

The University of Kentucky Art Museum is once again welcoming guests to view professional art featuring pieces from around the world. Though reservations must be made online and the gallery capacity is limited at 30 visitors an hour, down from 200, the

museum is happy to see masked face experiencing the beauty of their unique featured pieces.

“Through COVID people have been starving for the arts, and we give them a safe place to experience them,” said Michaela Miles, a visitor services manager for UK’s Art Museum.

The museum began al-

lowing visitors in the fall, seeing mostly UK students during the week as part of classes or for their own enjoyment. The gallery is frequented by locals, families and visitors who travel to see the art during the weekends. They’ve been averaging between 20 and 70 visitors a day depending on the different exhibits and day of the week.

“Everybody has been really nice and compliant making reservations ahead and being understanding about sanitizing, keeping their masks on at all times.

A lot of people have been traveling for Spring Break and families haven been coming through,” Miles said.

In a space that might feel small to some, the museum is able to feature over 5,000 pieces - some part of the UK collection, and others part of temporary exhibits. A wide range of painting, photographs, sculptures and historical relics can be found displayed on the walls, floor and hanging in the different rooms.

“Right now, I think our main attraction is ‘Sew What.’ It’s an exhibition by three artists that are working in textiles and fibers,” Mile said. “A lot of textile and fiber artists have been coming to see it from all around Kentucky. It’s not very often that you see an exhibition done completely by textile and fiber art, so it’s been really a highlight.”

‘Sew What’ was created by artists Jessie Dunahoo, Elana Herzog and Ben Venom and is displayed in the front room of the gallery. Its main focal point is large, blanket-style pieces of recycled materials including Kroger bags, Bounty paper towel pack-

ing and Charmin toilet paper packaging. This exhibit makes the viewer question what art materials can be and how creativity can make beauty out of materials many view as trash.

UK Art Museum prioritizes showing all types of artists, both near and far.

The museum makes sure to include art from local Kentucky artists, including Dunahoo, who recently passed away.

“We typically always have at least one local Kentucky artist on view, if not in their own featured exhibition. That’s something we really pride ourselves on is recognizing those local artists and giving them a platform to accelerate their work,” Miles said.

The museum continues to rotate out their private collection of pieces along with having new exhibits transition in out to always have something new on display. Due to limited staff the pieces are not being changed as often as preCOVID times.

“We want to make sure we are giving enough space and time to do things properly and safely,” Miles said. “Works on paper have a shorter lifespan that they can be exposed to light, whereas sometimes when we have oil paintings or sculptures that can be out a little bit longer.”

The ground floor area features three main exhibitions a year while the upstairs area features the permit collection along with photography and featured exhibitions that rotate out every six or twelve weeks.

Before the pandemic, the museum brought the displayed artists to give lectures at Gatton Student Center and meet guests.

Many of the artists were locals, but some were flown in and provided art lovers with a one-on-one experience with fans and art lovers alike.

“We have been still making sure to do those over Zoom, so those have actually been pretty well attended. It’s actually changed to where it is more of a global attendance now.

Some of our lectures have received a few hundred folks from UK and Lexington community are now getting a couple thousands since it’s globally accessible,” Miles said.

Art lovers like Joan and

David Kelly are happy to once again experience art in person. The Kellys often visited the museum before COVID, but Saturday was their first trip back since the

pandemic.

“It’s really interesting, there are a lot of these things that fascinate me when I see what they were able to do with the space,”

Joan said.

Her favorite exhibit currently on display is a collection of paintings and drawings made on books from different artists. ‘The

Beet’ by Mary Rezny was the piece that caught her eye the most with the pink colors used in the hand-colored picture of beets on the page of a book.

Blake and Annika Beshear visited the museum for the first time Saturday and enjoyed the different photography featured. The Beshears looked at a collection of black and white photography that included a wall dedicated to photos of bridges. This wall included photographs from David Plowden, Michael Burns and others.

“I’m relatively impressed for such a small art gallery,” Blake said. “I really enjoyed the bridges, they were pretty cool, just the composition and design.”

The UK Art Museum may not be the same as guests are used to, but still features the unique pieces visitors know them for.

Museum administrators are excited for restrictions to end while the works themselves continue to communicate with those willing to stop and take a look.

Gen. G and UK host ‘Hoops at Home’ Esports tournament

Members of the UK community got to experience a Final Four this year, just one not the one Kentucky fans expected.

The popular ‘Hoops at Home’ 64-player Esports tournament began for the second straight year on Friday afternoon, offering cash prizes and other prizes to the players that manage to secure their spot in the final four.

Both the rounds of 64 and 32 concluded on Friday, leaving 16

players with the opportunity to become the second ever ‘Hoops at Home’ champion in the UK community. The second day featured the round of 16 and round of eight beginning on Saturday at 5:00 p.m.

Catching air

Gray concrete, gray sky: the skateboarding bowl at Woodland Park sits empty, at the moment not much more than a bowl for catching another smattering of rain.

Then, the clicking of wheels on pavement as four teens roll into view, swapping two skateboards and a tricycle between themselves.

“We got nothing else to do, for real,” said Kayli Bellia. “And we just knew no one else would be here.” Bellia and her friends normally go to a skate park at Valley Park, where there’s not much to do. But for her skateboarding is less about tricks and more about state of mind.

“It’s like a way to just get away,” Bel-

lia said. “You listen to music, you put your headphones in and just, you know, skate.”

She does have the scars to prove her previous attempts at tricks, but kept it tame on Saturday and mostly watched her friends wheel around the miraculously puddle-free skating bowl.

21-year-old Skylar, who asked that his last name not be used, was convinced by his friends’ encouragement to take on the steepest ramp.

“You gotta commit, bro,” one friend called after a failed first attempt that left Skylar running down the ramp to keep from a face plant.

“Commit to what, life?” Skylar called back. He said trying new tricks can be scary, but that’s why he has to try them.

gives you that confidence to try to succeed better. I think it’s more or less that,” Skylar said. “And then having friends that will tell you, ‘you can do it.’”

Friendship and community are bigger factors in why he likes skateboarding than the activity itself. “A lot of people that do skateboard have had really good personalities,” Skylar said while perched on the rim of a bowl at the park. He rode into the park on the tricycle, which was originally his younger brother’s, he said.

“My brother got it for Christmas, and it extends, so I just started riding it and then started doing more tricks on it and got better at it. So I just brought it down here,” Skylar said. The trike is too low-riding to go over some of the features at the skate park, but makes for a slow ride that mirrored the afternoon’s mood.

Skylar, Bellia and their two friends snuck in their visit to the skate park between two afternoon showers that kept most other visitors home.

With the ground below and sky above almost mirror images of the dreary afternoon, their skateboards left the group looking like they could go back and forth between air and earth. But stopping to laugh and chat and switch boards, the small group made it clear that the skate park was an incidental location for the real reason for the outing - being with other people in the simplest ways.

“There’s not a lot of stuff to do there,” Bellia said. “But it’s still pretty fun when you have all your homies.”

To mask or not to mask?

Warmer weather, pandemic fatigue, more vaccinations: whatever the reason, there have been a lot of exposed faces on campus in the last few weeks.

The university’s mask policy says masks should be worn at all times on campus - even outside - unless eating, drinking or alone in a room. To test whether students were following this mask mandate, the Kernel observed the mask-wearing habits of students on campus for one hour on Hilltop Avenue.

Between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m., 69 people passed the obversation point. 43 people were wearing masks and 26 people were not, leaving the mask mandate with just above a 62% compliance rate.

This rate jives with the observations of students, who said they see fewer people on campus wearing masks.

“I think it’s just like with the vaccine coming in, they just think it’s safer,” said Tony Li, a freshman computer science major.

Hank Sutherland, a freshman education major, agreed that students are using vaccination - whether they are vaccinated or not - as a reason to stop wearing masks.

“I haven’t seen recent statistics, but I’m pretty sure cases are going down. I’m not saying it’s a good thing, although I think that that’s just the reasoning in general,” Sutherland said. He has noticed mask usage decreasing mostly outside, which is fine with him.

“I normally keep mine on. But if you’re outside, then I don’t think that would affect

me much,” Sutherland said.

Freshman Quinn Caffaro agreed that students aren’t wearing masks outside, understandably because of the weather.

“Nothing’s really changed since I came back in January in terms of mask wearing.

So I think we’re, I think we’re good,” Caffaro said. He thinks UK is on a good path with vaccinations to bring campus back to normal in the fall.

“If everyone complies to the protocols, and if they don’t get the vaccine, they can,” Cafarro said. “If not, it’s their choice.”

Some students say campus should still enforce mask wearing this semester.

“I think we should,” Li said. “Yeah, just end strong.”

COVID-19 cases among UK students in the spring semester are significantly down from the fall, with the number of new cases

falling in the single digits most days.

As of April 10, there were 29 active cases among students and fewer than 1,300 cases total since reentry testing began in the fall. Cases are low enough that UK loosened its housing policy to allow students to have one residential guest beginning on April 12.

Regardless of the current status of COVID-19 on campus, students think next fall will be better and are looking forward to normalcy.

“I’m excited for sports games. As a first year, I didn’t really get the full Rupp Arena experience,” Sutherland said. “So I think that’ll be fun.”

I’m pretty - like I’m hopeful, knowing that I can have the next three years to have fun,” Caffaro said. “So if anything, we’ll see what happens.”

Live entertainment has made a long-awaited return to Lexington. With restrictions, venues are able to reopen and bring the lively atmosphere back Lexingtonians were once accustomed to.

Comedy Off Broadway has reopened its doors, allowing guests to have a much-needed laugh away

from a digital screen. This weekend’s headliner April Macie made the trip to Lexington to share some of her famous jokes.

Macie was a finalist on NBC’s “The Last Comic Standing” in 2006 and voted “Funniest and Hottest” comic in 2008 on Howard Stern’s show. She has appeared on E! Entertainment, Snoop Dogg’s: Bad Girls of Comedy, Sirius and XM Radio and Access

Hollywood. She and is currently starring in the Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready Comedy Special on Netflix.

The well-known comedian opened the show with the head turning line “let’s talk about wieners.”

A combination of sex jokes and self-depreciation made up her set on Saturday in Lexington.

“I’m just happy to be working again. I feel like

coronavirus has given an appreciation for what I do, making people laugh. I’m just happy not to be looking at a bird feeder anymore,” Macie said.

Macie brought the audience into her show - the front row became a dangerous place for those who do not know what to do when a joke is made about them. One audience member brought his mother to the show, giving Macie a

clear opening and likely leading to an awkward car ride home.

Cari and Adam Gurth moved to Lexington three months before COVID-19 and had attended Comedy Off Broadway once before the start of the pandemic. They were happy to be back laughing along with Macie’s jokes.

“I thought the show was great. I thought the headliner was very funny

and I’m glad I didn’t come with my parents this time,” said Amelia Spanier, who has attended the venue’s showss before.

Macie, glass of white wine in hand, was a clear pro and kept the audience laughing even after she left the stage. But standup is not for everyone, and comedy was not the only offering available for entertainment-minded LexingSee LIVE on page 17

Bluegrass band Dark Moon Hollow took the stage at The Burl, a live music venue located in the distillery district. The sold-out concert had guests dancing and singing to county and bluegrass music.

Dark Moon Hollow is a five-piece bluegrass/newgrass band, formed in 2017 by a group of friends. They are two-time nominees of the Lexington Bluegrass Band of the Year. Musical group Vessel also made an appearance at The Burl event, attended by Dustyn Sams and Gina Ratliff.

“We are only 23 and 22 but we are an old couple coming out for a date night,” Sams said.

Like many of the attendees, the couple was

happy to be around others enjoying live music and drinks. They sat a table near the back by the arcade area but had a great view of the stage.

“I didn’t think I’d ever be able to come back to a place like this,” Ratliff said. “It’s good to be able to come out and socialize with people.”

Corey Boggs and friends had reserved a table at the concert where they chatted and enjoyed a close view of the stage.

“I like that we have our own space. We have our own tables, it is kind of odd being around a large group again.” said Boggs.

The lively positive energy of the concert left all with a smile on their and drink in hand. Some sat at tables they had reserved while others walked around dancing and socializing with old and new friends.

Holly Kelly has attended many events at The Burl and was happy that the venue moved outside to comply with COVID restrictions and provide a bigger outdoor space.

“Without COVID they would have never done the parking lot theme, and I actually really enjoy it because you can see the stage.

Before we crammed into the building and it’s not a high enough stage for you to see everything. I think this is a benefit to get a bigger crowd with more space and better visuals,” Kelly said.

Even for regular concert-goers, Saturday’s performance was their first concert out since the lockdown. The music and astrosphere were helped along by a simple gratitude for live music that made Saturday’s show one to remember.

“This is my therapy,” Holly Kelly said. “It’s good to see the light show, it’s good to run into old friends, it’s good to dance.
