Kentucky Derby Digest: 2013 Volume  5   The   Kentucky   Derby   has   long   been   heralded   as   the   “greatest   two   minutes   in   sports,”   however   racing   fans   will   argue   that   it   is   the   greatest   two   minutes   of   the  year.    Derby  fever  is  in  full  bloom  as  Churchill  Downs  prepares  for  the  139th   Run  for  the  Roses,  the  first  leg  of  the  Triple  Crown  Series.     This   year   the   horses   earned   their   spot   in   the   Kentucky   Derby   u\lizing   the   newly   devised   point   system,   as   opposed  to  graded  earnings  used  in  previous  years.    The  goal  is  to  level  the  playing  field  and  grant  entrance   to   horses   who   have   demonstrated   ability   in   longer   races.     While   the   system   has   some   kinks,   the   field   for   Kentucky  Derby  is  chock  full  of  top-‐notch  horses,  sure  to  have  everyone  chan\ng  “go  baby,  go!”      Editor’s  Note:    I  have  highlighted  my  top  five  picks,  but  with  twenty  horses  to  choose  from  it  is  a  daun'ng  task  to  predict   the   winner.   I   thank   the   guest   handicappers   for   their   input   and   I   look   forward   to   seeing   who   is   on   the   money   on   May   4th.     Congratula'ons  to  John  Mooney,  as  he  was  the  only  handicapper  to  have  had  “I’ll  Have  Another”  on  his  Top  5  for  last   year.   I   also   would   like   to   thank   Adam   Coglianese   Photo,   Coady   Photography   &   Benoit   Photo   for   their   generous   permission  to  use  their  photos  in  this  year’s  newsleQer.    Remember  to  check  out  the  Kentucky  Derby  Digest  Facebook   page  and  TwiQer  feed  for  con'nuous  updates  and  good  luck.    -‐-‐  Tracy  Nazzaro,  April  18,  2013

Trainer:      Todd  Pletcher    Jockey:  Calvin  Borel       Owner:  WinStar  Farm,  LLC   Breeder:    W.S.  Farish

Revolu'onary   hit   his   stride   in   December   breaking   his   maiden   at   Aqueduct   and   has   been   winning   ever   since.     His  performance  in  the  Withers  Stakes  was  simply  stellar  and  he  baUled  a  large  field  to  bring  home  first  in   the  Louisiana  Derby.    He  is  comfortable  anywhere  on  the  track  –  inside,  outside  or  right  up  the  middle.    This   steering  will  come  in  handy  as  there  is  always  a  traffic  jam  to  avoid  with  a  full  field  of  20  Derby  contenders.   WinStar   actually   conducted   a   fan   poll   to   help   narrow   the   jockey   choices   and   it   was   close   between   Calvin   Borel   and   Rosie   Napravnik.     Truth   be   told,   Todd   Pletcher   made   the   final   call   and   Kentucky   Derby   veteran     Calvin  Borel  will  be  in  the  irons  on  May  4th.        Calvin  has  won  the  Derby  three  \mes:  first  with  Street  Sense  in   2007,  followed  by  victories  aboard  Mine  That  Bird  (2010)  and  Super  Saver  (2011).  Earning  the  nickname  “Bo-‐ Rail”  for  this  daring  rides  skimming  the  rail,  Calvin  rides  to  win  every  \me.  Indeed,  there  will  be  plenty  of   money   riding  on  Calvin  in  hopes  he  secures  win  #4  on  May  4.   !"#$%&'()$'*++'

The sun shines bright in My Old Kentucky home, 'Tis summer, and people are gay; The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom While the birds make music all the day. The young folks roll on the little cabin floor All merry, all happy and bright; By 'n' by hard times comes a knocking at the door Then My Old Kentucky Home, good night!

Weep no more my lady Oh! weep no more today! We will sing one song For My Old Kentucky Home For My Old Kentucky Home, far away.

"A mint julep is not the product of a FORMULA. It is a CEREMONY and must be performed by a gentleman possessing a true sense of the artistic, a deep reverence for the ingredients and a proper appreciation of the occasion. It is a heritage of the old South, an emblem of hospitality and a vehicle in which noble minds can travel together upon the flower-strewn paths of happy and congenial thought.” – Major William D. Conner, West Point 1937
