November is Eye Donation Month and the Eye Bank is raising awareness to encourage more people to register as organ and tissue donors. This internationally recognized month also focuses on honoring donors and their families, and celebrating eye tissue recipients. “Eye tissue is a valuable resource, and by donating, we can help others by restoring their sight,” says Christine Humphreys, Executive Director of the Eye Bank.

“In Ontario, people are suffering while waiting for their corneal transplant. Tissue availability is one of the factors that slows down the process of corneal transplants. Right now, the average wait time, depending on where you live in Ontario, for a transplant is 252 days.”

REGISTER TO BE A DONOR AND GIVE THE GIFT OF SIGHT: https://bit.ly/2JiHEXd

By registering as a donor, you can:

• Give two people their sight back with corneal transplants • Repair and treat disease in eight people’s eyes with scleral transplants • Grant comfort to your family, knowing you have provided the gift of sight • Contribute to research and education in the prevention and treatment of eye disease.

Stopping the stigma There are many misconceptions about eye donation: • “Eye donation” does not necessarily mean the entire eye is donated; in many cases only the cornea (the clear, dome-shaped surface that covers the front of the eye) is donated • Even if you have glasses, poor vision, are blind, or suffer from cataracts or glaucoma, you can still register to be a donor.
