BW E P D: The birth weight EPD is a figure expressed in pounds and is a predictor of an individual’s contribution to its progeny’s weight at birth W W E P D: The weaning weight EPD is expressed in pounds as the average of weight of his progeny compared to an average bull of the breed for weaning weight Y W E P D: The yearling weight EPD is expressed in pounds as the average weight of his progeny compared to an average bull of the breed for yearling weight. It is the best indicator of overall growth. M I LK E P D: This value is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk as expressed in his daughters, or in other words, the part of weaning weight attributed to a mother’s milk genes. TM E P D: Total Maternal EPD is a combination of an animals Milk EPD added to 50% of its Weaning Weight EPD. It is an indicator of the growth potential of progeny based on performance and milking ability. This value is a better indicator of a cow’s production potential than just Milk. C E E P D: The Calving Ease EPD is a percentage of probability that a bull’s calves will be born without any assistance. Therefore, animals with a higher positive number will have a greater probability of having no calving problems. This value is more useful in identifying calving ease sires than using BW values alone. MC E E P D: The Maternal Calving Ease EPD is a percentage of probability that a bull’s daughter’s calves will be born without any assistance. Therefore, daughters of an animal with a higher positive number will have a greater probability of having no calving problems. H OW DO I P UT T H E N U M B ER S TO WO R K? We have provided you with the complete line up of performance data including actual weights & EDPs with accuracy values. EPDs can be a very valuable selection tool when used properly. We believe that it is important to recognize that EPDs change and become more accurate as more information is available. EPDs for young cattle will change over time as more performance and genomic data is reported. ACC U R AC Y IS A H I G H LY I M P O R TAN T VALU E TO CO N S I D E R WH E N UT I L IZ I N G E P D S . It is our belief that all EPDs should be presented with an associated accuracy value. It is important to note that a yearling bulls EPDs typically only have an accuracy value of 35% or less. Accuracy values improve as an individual animal has data reported on their progeny and it is included in subsequent genetic evaluations. High accuracy EPDs that include progeny information helps to identify genetic outliers and superior breeding stock. LOW ACCU R ACY = less than 40 M E DI U M ACC U R AC Y = greater than 40 less than 80 H IGH ACC U R AC Y = greater than 80 Possible change is the expected amount of probable deviation for an EPD at a specified accuracy level. The possible change table gives us the range in which the true genetic merit of an animal might fall given the accuracy of the EPD. As accuracies increase, the range in which the true genetic merit of an animal might fall becomes narrower. E X AM P LE : Bull A has a Milk EPD of 12 with an accuracy of 25 percent, while Bull B has a Milk EPD of 26 and an accuracy of 70 percent. Using the EPD Possible change table that can be accessed from the Canadian Angus Association website, we see that Bull A with a 25 percent accuracy for Milk could move +/- 9 pounds for an EPD change from 3 to 21 as more data becomes available. While Bull B with 70 percent accuracy for Milk could only move +/- 4 points into a range of 22 to 30. We encourage cattle producers to not get solely focused on EPD numbers, consider accuracy values and possible change, study actual performance data and utilize visual appraisal. Remember, the buyers of your calves in the fall evaluate your calves based upon physical weight class and visual appraisal!
