Student Anthology 12th Annual Edition December 2013

The Kenosha Literacy Council is pleased to present the 12th Annual Edition of the Student Anthology. There are more than 50 essays and poems that focus on the themes Visions of Home, Traditions & Celebrations, and Helping Hands. Established in 1965, the vision of the Kenosha Literacy Council (KLC) is “to help adult learners develop into literate citizens who are performing at their highest potential and contributing to their communities. The agency works toward this vision by providing English literacy education to adults in Kenosha County with the help of trained volunteers. KLC students come from all walks of life. Some are English speaking but, for whatever reason, have missed the opportunity to learn to read and write. Others come from foreign countries and, while their educational backgrounds range from none to college graduates, they also want to learn to read, write and speak English. KLC volunteer tutors work very hard to help the students reach their goals. Whatever their background, KLC students can be proud of their writing accomplishments. I want to thank all the adult learners and tutors who worked so hard on preparing their stories. I hope you enjoy the 2013 Student Anthology!

Visions of Home

Home: The place where a person or animal lives. My home is in the city.

My 1st Visit Meet the Author Name: Silvia Cruz

Country: Mexico

Learning Goal: My goal is to learn to write and speak English so that I can help my children in school or at the doctor.

8

We drove in a car from Mexico. Through Texas then to Kenosha. Some of my family is here. I was surprised by the snow in Wisconsin. I never saw snow and cold! When driving, cars stop at stop signs! The streets are very good. I like the food from McDonalds. I had not see a McDonalds before I came here. My husband works. Our children are in school at Jefferson. They speak English very well. So I need to learn so I can speak to teachers and when the children get sick and have to go to the hospital. Three children came with us to Kenosha. We live in a house. I was surprised by the microwave, dryers, washing machine, television and telephone. In America people are very nice. The respect for ladies is better here. I wanted my son and daughter to have a better life. The Literacy Council helps me to learn to speak English. I’m very happy to be in America. My children are happy and have made new friends and so have I.

The Family Farm I lived on a farm in Kenosha County when I was a child and still help when they need me on the farm. It’s a lot of work to keep it up. You have to move fast to get everything done. We had to keep the tractor running. We had corn and soybeans and hay and straw. We had a grain mill at the same time and running at the same time and we had to stop the grain mill in 1999. We had cow and pigs and had to feed and clean them out twice a day. They were beef cows and pigs were only to be show at fair. Every summer, we had to take the pigs to the fairs to show in the 4-H and I won trophies and ribbons and we sold the pigs at the fairs. We sold the cows to family members. We sold all the land in Illinois. My dad is a truck driver in Wisconsin and Illinois. I work in Great Lakes for Goodwill Industries. I work five days a week. I like being on my own. I can do anything I want. I have two sisters in Kenosha. We are very close. They help me a lot when I need help. The Kenosha Literacy Council help me a lot. I’m trying to get my driver’s license so I can drive to work everyday.

Speaking Spanish Meet the Author Name: Irene Hernandez

Country: Mexico

Learning Goal: My goal is to learn English so I can help teachers.

12

Sometimes it is a problem when a family leaves the U.S.A. to Mexico. Today more children go back to Mexico and the children do not speak Spanish, only English. In the U.S.A. they learn English and the teachers in Mexico do not know English. It is important that in the home we speak Spanish because we need to have our children remember our traditions, customs and language. I could help the parents to help their children speak Spanish when I go back to Michoacรกn because I am a teacher in Mexico. This way I can help my community in Mexico. So people in America who are from Mexico need to speak Spanish in their homes. The children need to keep their Spanish language. But I do think it is important to speak both English and Spanish.

Perfect Name I knew that I was pregnant at May 10th, 2008. I was so happy. I wanted to choose the perfect name for my dear son. I wanted for my son a name that reflects his personality, and I started to think and remembered when I was 21 years old and I was very sick, and my mom told me a history that she read about Abraham Lincoln. She said to me “I read that when Abraham Lincoln woke up in the morning, and he looked at the mirror and said, ‘Oh My God, I’m really be an ugly man, but in this country if I will make a history is because of my intelligence and not my beauty.’” I thought “Lincoln” was a perfect name for my son, because reflects how a man transcend for his good actions not for his beauty, because the beauty is ephemeral. And that is the reason my son name is Lincoln.

Meet the Author Name: Susana Jamaica

In September 2012, I took citizenship classes at the Kenosha Literacy Council, which lasted 1 ½ months. These classes are super interesting due to the person who made it pleasant and interesting. I was lucky to have a good teacher Ms. Susan. I learned a lot with her. In March of 2013, my husband told me that we would be sending the documents for the citizenship. When he told me this I said ok, but I never thought that the response would come so soon as it arrived. In June a letter arrived in which I had an appointment to go take the finger prints and photo. In July I received another letter to go to Milwaukee to take the citizenship test. I knew that I was not in a position to do the test. We had just been notified that one of my nephews, who is studying in Switzerland was seriously ill in a coma in the hospital. At that time everything I studied I forgot, my mind was in a place where I could not be, my family joined in prayer for the recovery of my nephew. There was 20 days that my nephew was in a coma, when he woke up it was a miracle GOD gave him a second opportunity. Once I knew he was getting better, I started to go over again, what I needed for the test. The day August 20th I did the test, and I told my nephew that I was doing this for him, and that is

what I did. I passed my test. I was very nervous, but God put me with a person whom I felt comfortable with speaking to and I understood all the questions. I was very relieved that it was over. I am telling you this experience not for me to brag about but, today I am an American Citizen, so that people may see that everything in this life is that you can always choose to do. I would like to thank Ms. Susan for teaching me the history of this country, and my tutor Stan for the support as always, and thanks to Kenosha Literacy Council for the opportunity that I have always received.

Family Travels Meet the Author Name: Paul Yang

Country: South Korea

Learning Goal: My goal is to learn more English so that I can communicate with people.

18

I wanted to take my family on a car trip all over The United States. My good friend said that it was a good idea, one time. But the recommendation was my big mistake. We traveled 14 nights and 15 days. We had a small sedan car to put four people in. America is very large, but it is not abundant is humans. We drove all day, but saw no humans, only cornfields. Sometimes nobody is at gas stations. We had not made motel reservations. My second daughter phoned continually on her cell phone asking, “Do you have room for tonight? Now my daughters English is very well. At that time we did not speak much English so it was very difficult. We looked at the great Presidents of Mt. Rushmore, the animals at Yellowstone and feared the living Geyser. I lost my way in South Dakota and had to moved around in confusion. We saw the Grand Canyon. It was magnificent. Zion Canyon was beautiful. Bryce Canyon was a splendor. The Rocky Mountains are the great clean feeling mountains.

On the head of the of the mountains was snow. The reflection shone in the beautiful lake. Las Vegas was hot and dreadful. In the very big expensive hotel I saw many people gambling. This was a big surprise for me! Traveling by car is very tiring. If I travel again – No thank you. However, the family deserved one time together. In Denver, I changed the car oil. In the early morning we came back to Chicago. I was so tired I couldn’t think! Still, this family travel remains a pleasant memory.

At night the moon and stars are very close. The summer has rains and after the rain there is rainbow. My city is small. But there are many people. My garden is big. Many workers help me in the garden. I have tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, peppers, green onions, yellow onions, cucumbers, and beans. I like the big restaurants and big houses. My city has a church, hospital, and library. We would like to have a museum, schools and university. We like a Korean food called kemche. It is a soup with pork and chicken. Thank you Kenosha Literacy Council for sharing a visit to my country Mongolia.

In the capitol I visited the Supreme Court, the senate chamber, the governor’s conference room, and the assembly chamber. I visited the military museum. My neighborhood is a nice place to live. At night it is so peaceful. I can hear the children playing in the park. My neighbors are really friendly to us. Sometimes I go to the window and look out. I can see people I know walking for exercise. We have a park in back of our house. There is a big hill that the children sled down when it snows in the winter months. I love to hear that sound; not the sound of fear, but the sound of joy! That is why I love living here.

My New Neighborhood I moved to my new neighborhood three months ago. We have only two Hispanic families so we practice English a lot. My new neighborhood is quiet, clean, safe and friendly. There are ten children in our neighborhood. I drive my daughter to school at McKinley Elementary. She is in first grade. My son walks to Lincoln Jr. High. He is in 7th grade. My son has a friend from Indian Trails. Michael comes to visit two or three times a week. This month our neighborhood had a “block party”. It was a pot luck party and there was lots of good food and drinks. I made Mexican food, tamales and chorizo. The neighbors made different food. There were games for children. They played checkers and a bean bag game. They rode their bicycles too. They had a game of soccer. The adults played games too, and we drank beer. We listened to Country music and Mexican music. My neighbor, Renee, is a Spanish teacher, but she doesn’t speak Spanish to me, only English! She moved to the neighborhood one month ago. She is a special friend. I practice English with her. She helps me understand English. I am enjoy the neighborhood very much and I enjoyed the block party! It was special to me.

Kenosha has a beautiful lake. When I came to live here I went to see the lake with my husband and I liked it. Months after, I went to study at the Kenosha Literacy Council and here I met my friend Marta. I told her that I would like to walk at the lake. One day in the library Marta invited me to walk. So we went to walk and I could see the lake, birds, flowers, people walking and people fishing. I loved the sound of the waves. I liked to feel the water and sand between my toes. I could smell the flowers. The smell was pleasant. Also, I could smell the fish, but this smell was not pleasant. While walking and talking with my friend Marta, we discussed that Kenosha is different from our country. I am from Durango, Mexico. In my part of the country there are no beaches. I liked to see the lake because I have never seen one place more beautiful than this. Now I go to walk 3 days a week with my friend Marta. I like walking by the lake because I feel relaxed.

Lake Michigan I have lived in Kenosha for 3 years. I like Kenosha more than Chicago. The last time I lived in Chicago was when I first came from Mexico. I came together with my grandmother. We visited for the first time Washington D.C. and Kenosha. I compared Chicago and Kenosha. I liked Kenosha for different things. It has four seasons: winter, fall, summer and spring. I go to the Recplex to swim and walk around the lake. I like the flowers, colorful trees and animals. I like to visit museum, parks, markets, and mall. In Kenosha there are government schools, libraries, and hospital. People are friendly and happy. My neighbor helps me with the computer. I like food in Golden Corral because it is not expensive.

Country: Spain

Learning Goal: I want to improve my spelling and grammar.

“All About My Mother” is not just the title of the famous movie by Pedro Almodouar. Don’t worry!! This story is about my mother and the way I remember her. I remember my mother from a black and white photograph. She is sitting next to my father. She looks young and svelte. She has a big smile and looks happy. She may not always have been this happy while raising her five children, but she always found time for us. My mother was a good cook, and I especially miss her Spanish potato omelet. I remember her singing in the house. She knew the lyrics to the popular songs of the day. To me, she sounded happy when she was singing. I have great memories of my mother when I was little. As I grew older, I wanted to be more independent and eventually left home and lived in other parts of Spain. During this time there wasn’t a day that I did not think about my family, and especially my mother. Starting my own family and moving to the United States resulted in further separation of my family. In the time I have been away, I visited my mother and family two times. I was glad to see my brothers and sisters, but the time I spent with my mother was the most important. My mother is no longer with us, but the best memory I have is that black and white photograph where she looks young, svelte, smiling and happy.

A Dream Home Meet the Author Name: Sergiy Saliyev

Country: Ukraine

Learning Goal: My goal is to speak better English and start education at a college or university.

38

I was born and lived all my life except last three months in Ukraine in Nikolayeo City. Ukraine is the biggest country in Europe. It has similar climate with Wisconsin. Ukraine is located in the center of Europe next to Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova. There is a Black Sea in the south of the country with an area of 422,000 KM squared (162934 square miles) and maximum depth of 2210 meters (137 miles). The only country I have ever been, besides Ukraine, is The United States. When I was first time visiting States, I saw a lot of new things such as beautiful parks, museums, one of the Great Lakes, clean and nice beach, Chicago downtown and many other beautiful views. Some of these things are rare in my birth city Nikolaev. But any way, there are a lot of things why I love my birth place. Some of them are: I have a lot of good friends and we have a lot of pleasant and funny recollection between us. There are a lot of beautiful places I’ve visited and I wish to visit some of them in the future. Also, Nikolaev is an industrial city which has five big plants, three of them are shipbuilding. Now I am living in one of Pleasant Prairie’s houses. It’s a quiet place which has a lot of beautiful views. The neighborhood has a lot of friendly people who can usually help you.

The house where I am living has two floors with well -spaced rooms. There is a big and beautiful lawn around the house. The only thing I do not like – it is wood without any brick, so it doesn’t look strong enough. What about my dream house? I think it is close to the house I am living in now with the difference – there is no pool, sauna and a great view to the ocean—that would be the perfect house!

The Burmese Christmas is the same to celebrate like American Christmas the birth of baby Jesus, but the children get candy and have no Santa. They have a Christmas tree but it is from the Jungle. They make paper decorations shaped like apples, hearts, and birds. The tree is same like American with many lights. Everyone from the city comes for the parties each night for 3 nights and this is my memory of Burmese Christmas.

Our Fourth of July Party I love our Fourth of July celebration. My wife and I have always made the Fourth of July holiday special for our family. We start by having a cook out and we always have a lot of food. We make skirt steak, chicken, hot dogs, burgers, and all other kind of sides like green bean casserole, Puerto Rican rice, potato salad, and other dishes I can’t think of and of course a lot of desserts. After that, some of the kids will go swimming and some of them play on the swing set. The grownups normally play bean bag yard toss. As the night goes on everyone gets ready to go to the lake to watch fireworks. We have a really nice fireworks display. After that everyone comes back to our house because I always have my own fireworks show. I always put on a fountain show and then pass out sparklers to the kids. My family really looks forward to my show. Some relatives even spend the night so they don’t miss my fireworks show.

Dating Traditions Meet the Author Name: Maria G. Perez

Country: Mexico

Learning Goal: I am always working to improve my English speaking, reading and writing.

46

When I was young, the dating traditions were different than today. When I was 17 years old my parents were so strict that that they wouldn’t let me talk with boys. When I met my husband it was so hard to see him because they were so strict. When I got the chance to see him I would run to the front door to talk to him. I had to be careful so nobody would see us because somebody would tell my mom or dad and they would be mad at me. The fun part to see him was when I went to church with my mom. I left my mom in the church and ran to the plaza to see him. The tradition to meet or date was walking around the plaza. If some guy liked you he would approach you with a flower. If you accepted the flower it meant you liked him and you started dating. When I decided to marry my husband, I was so nervous because my husband’s father sent a letter to my father asking if he could marry me. I was so afraid to answer the question. I was so nervous and afraid. My father asked my mother what was my answer and I said Yes. We were married 6 month later. We have now been married for almost 40 years.

It takes time to eat. After the roaster sings at morning we exchange gifts. Everyone opens the presents at one. Then the children play. My Soccer Life I am Yesenia . I have 22 years old. I like soccer. I have played for 12 years. I like soccer because I think it is a good game for keeping healthy and is very fun for me. I think it is very good because I have a lot of opportunities to travel to other cities. Sometimes when I wanted to play soccer my mom says “Yesenia, today you can’t go to play soccer because you grades in the school are bad”. And I became very sad because I wanted to go play soccer. The last month I went to play at Waukegan for the 1st place but lost. Now I am playing in a soccer league in Milwaukee. We win all games. I save all my energy for helping my team win 1st place. My goal is to play soccer for a professional team. I have to keep playing and learning to reach my goal. “We must try to make our dreams.”

Christmas in the Czech Republic Meet the Author Name: Bozena Lasakova

Country: Czech Republic

Learning Goal: It is important for me to understand English for my life.

52

Christmas in the Czech Republic is a 3 day celebration. It begins on December 24th and it ends on December 26th. On December 24th the parents decorate the tree. The children are not allowed to see the tree until evening. No one eats food until 5 o’clock or 6 o’clock when we have dinner. Dinner is fish and potato salad. No other meat, only fish. It is said that if a person doesn’t eat anything all day, he or she will see a gold pig. This is a sign of good luck in the Czech Republic. After dinner the father goes into the room with the tree and rings a bell. He doesn’t turn the light on and when the children come into the room, he activates a sparkler. It is very pretty. The children are so happy. The father turns the light on, and the children open their gifts. On the 25th we go to church in the morning. After church we visit family and friends. We take gifts to older family members and our close friends. We eat and drink with everyone. We are very hungry, because we didn’t eat the day before on the 24th. We relax on the 26th. We go to museums, the cinema, and we walk in the park. It is cold, and we have snow. There is no wind. It is beautiful.

Christmas in Mexico Meet the Author Name: Sylvia Benitez

Country: Mexico

Learning Goal: My goal is to communicate better with my children in English.

54

Every Christmas my family and I go to Mexico to celebrate with our family. We celebrate it differently than there. It’s a three day celebration from the 24th through the 26th of December. On the first day, the celebration begins at 6:00 in the evening. We go to church, and then we go to see a play about baby Jesus. The play is called Pastorela. Then everyone goes to eat dinner. We eat tamales and pozole and then at midnight there are fireworks. Everyone hugs and says Merry Christmas and sings to baby Jesus. At about 5:00 a.m. the Mariachi starts to play again and we sing to the Virgin Mary at church. Everyone goes home to sleep and begins to get ready for the rest of the holiday. At around 12:00 p.m. everyone goes to a soccer tournament. After that, we go home to get ready for the party in the evening where everyone has fun dancing. The next day the Pastorela continues at 12:00 p.m. When that’s done everyone goes to the rodeo to see the bull riders. After the rodeo we have another party and we dance with a different band. We have a good time in Mexico. Our belief is that baby Jesus brings us our gifts, not Santa Claus. Everyone has fun celebrating and having a good holiday.

Give Love Until It Hurts Before, I was running and running all the time. I thought I did everything and nobody was thankful. I thought this only happened in my life. If I did everything all the time, I was thinking negatively. If my children cried or asked me something, I said “ I don’t have time. I need to make food. I need to drive, etcetera.” I hurt their feelings. I thought why do I do anything if nobody does anything for me? When I read Mother Theresa’s book, I felt ashamed for living my life like this. I started to understand if you don’t do anything for others, why is life important? I cried and cried because in my life I never did anything for other people. I only thought about myself but she helped me and I thought first I need to change my bad habits to help other people. Now when I wake up first I pray. My goal is to treat others nicely and enjoy life. I try to make other people feel good. My life is very great. My children think “ my mom is a good mom.” I feel very happy. “Give love - until it hurts.” (Mother Theresa) Helping others can make you feel good. I learned this from Mother Theresa.

Helping People in Syria Meet the Author

If I could help people in the world, I would help the people in Syria. There is a revolution that

helping the people from dying. One person that knows about the medical stuff might help a lot of people. Their life is very dangerous. They might die in any second. Even though, they are doing it in a very secret and private way. There are small secret houses that have simple medical aids. People who are experienced volunteers put their lives and safety at risk to help the people who got shot. The weapons that they are using against them are more severe than the medicines that the experienced volunteers have. In addition to medical volunteers, people from other countries can help too. There are a lot of Syrian people who left their houses to the

borders. They are living in the tents in very hard conditions. A lot of countries are denying them. Sending money to them is not a good idea, because the money is not going to go to them for sure. I don’t want people to think I’m selfish that I picked my country to talk about. We all know that there are a lot of bad things are going on everywhere in the world. I was in Syria when the revolution started, and I’ve tasted what it is like. I wish that I can help one day.

Help Your Community Is very important to help each other. Also, you can change someone’s quality of life with your help. There are many ways to help people. One way is teaching how to do things themselves. “Do not give the fish, teach how to fish.” Another way to help is encourage people to do constructive things in their community. People can volunteer helping an organization; such as hospitals, schools, even teaching how to keep their city clean. “Life is made of choices, remove your shoes or scrub the floor.” People can change the world with help. We can start making a chain. The person that receives help can give it back to other people. It is a good feeling when you can see the satisfaction of the person you are helping, and your accomplishment of helping. Families used to help each other. I love my family because they are there for me. When I need something they would do it in a heartbeat. The same way I am for them. I will do anything for my family. Many years ago when I was living in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, my neighbors Charo and Vicente Flores had four children. The children were 1 to 4 years old. They had an automobile accident and Charo died. At that time my husband and I had 2 small children of our own and I was pregnant with our third. I helped Vicente by taking care of the children each day while he was at work. I bathed the children and cooked meals for them every day. When the children got older, I took them to school. When I visited my mother, people saw me walking down the street with 7 children. They probably wondered if all of the children were mine. One day Vicente took his small children, my small children and me to a restaurant for dinner in his pickup truck. We all sat in the cab. It was crowded and I was pregnant. The parking lot attendant asked Vicente if they were all his children. Vicente said “Yes”. I couldn’t believe my ears. Vicente eventually re-married when the youngest child was about 20 years old. I am in contact on Facebook with Vicente’s two daughters. I attended Vannia’s wedding in Ciudad Juarez.

AmericaMy Helping Hand I am from the state of Guanajuato Mexico. I came to America to help my sister with her two daughters. It was supposed to be only 15 days but it has been more than 15 years. The minute I walked in the airport here in America someone offered to help me right away and I liked it! I was enjoying being here but 10 days after I got very sick and my sister took me to a clinic inside a church. The nurse was also a teacher who treated me really nice at no cost. She offered some English classes to my sister because she didn’t speak much English at that time. That’s how I got started at Bradford High School. I was kind of scared but now I keep thanking that happened to me like that. I have four sisters older than me and two brothers who helped me during school time with home, food, clothing and shoes. Now that I am a mother they help me by babysitting my kids while I worked or I am in school. After two surgery’s I got very sick but they were always there helping me getting better and better . I feel like a very lucky person for the family I have, and the way America has treated me. I want to do something in return so I started volunteering teaching adults some English classes. I taught how to use American dollars and how to order food by phone. I heard about a prenatal program that the state was offering for pregnant women and I volunteered driving and taking women to their appointments. While I was there I learned how to shop wise, use coupons for my groceries, and how to prepare nutritious food at a low cost. As a married person I learned that there is not a perfect marriage but with spiritual counseling my life has been easier. I learned equality, forgiveness and kindness which is the key to being a better person. I am not afraid to help strangers because I was a stranger once. I don’t expect to get paid for favors, after all I like to help. Treat others the same way you like to be treated. I will never forget this phrase, Kindness ripples out like a rock in the water.
