Marco Scale Eco System in Fu Tei Au (FTA) Eco system is very important on earth as it is a cycle that maintaining balance between different species in the natural environment. However, the continues urbanisation is keep destroying our eco system such as the rapid development of Shen Zhen resulted in the tall buildings blocked the migration flyway of the bird obscured their flyway. Urban expansion reduced the amount of rural area and damaged the life cycle of the animals and even lead to extinction of some species. Therefore it is a necessary to protect and preserve earth’s eco system. Fu Tei Au is a frontier area in Sheung Shui, in the northern part of the North District, the New Territories. It is one of the supply station for the bird migration flyway. The bird from east asian-australasians flyway and central asian flyway will travel to the southern part of the earth for finding food. So they will stay in Fu Tei Au for around 1 to 2 month to recharge during their migration.

Ecological Distribution in Fu Tei Au (FTA)

Villagers’s Effort in Preserving Fu Tei Au (FTA) Ecology

Fu Tei Au contains large amount of natural areas such as scrubland, grassland and wetland which provides a very desire living area for different animals and they formed the messo ecosystem.

However, the urban development take place in Sheung Shui since 1972 which lead to lot of natural environment are being destroyed and many species are keep decreasing. As this situation is becoming more serious in the recent year, it’s time start to do something in order to save our natural environment. Fu Tei Au is a very suitable site to do this restoration as it contains over 200 types of species and most of them need to be preserved urgently. the current damaged ecosystem in Fu Tei Au on both macro and micro scale.

The villagers love this villagers as it is full of memories and they did try hard to preserving this beautiful land. They paid a lot of efforts in saving the ecosystem and the species diversity in Fu Tei Au. For example, In order to increase the wild spread of some types of plants, villagers would press the root of plants and use the soil cover it back so they can grow and spread in a faster and more effective way. They use this method to plant the hill area in Fu Tei Au which ensure different types of plant can live healthily and make the hill full of flowers during four seasons. They call it ‘Flower Field of Four Seasons’.

A study is conducted to discover the habitats, food source, and life cycle of different species in FTA. 100 types of plants and animals are recorded in the booklet. And this study helped me to obtain the current living environment of the species and how to improve these places to provide better conditions for them to grow. For example, the fireflies they keep decreasing in the recent year, as the wetland area in the village being destroyed.

After the research and study of the site, I start to tackle the current situation in FTA by proposing different strategies for different locations on the site. For example, for the ‘Habitat of Fireflies’, I proposed planting reed to purify the wetland water quality and remove the pollutant in the existing damaged wetland. For ‘Pond of Flower Field’, I proposed to remove most of the water hyacinth and the remaining amount will be grouped so the natural sunlight can pass through the water and provide a desirable living environment for the fish.

First Attempt - Master Layout Plan To renewal the whole village, I first start with the master layout design through exploration drawings and sketches on the existing site with different zoning such as housing area, fish pond, and finally, a pathway extends to the hillside to connect the whole site. Ng Tung River is the main water source of Fu Tei Au but the water quality of the river is hugely polluted by the surrounding development. However, the renewal of the Shek Wu Hui Effluent Polishing Plant giving hope to improve the water quality in the future. And the Eco Garden System will provide a solution to allow and purify the water from Ng Tung River channeling into the village.

Improving the water supply help to recover the current natural environment in FTA and hence provide desirable habitat for the species and human. Therefore, the Eco Garden System can interconnect them together and benefit each other.

And of course, to provide a better natural place for the animals such as migratory birds. But this scheme ignored the concrete belt in Ng Tung River and this is actually a very important and full of potential element that can be considered during the design stage. ECO The early design stage of the butterfly garden is inspired by the transformation stages of the butterfly from egg to larva and finally the adult stage. The garden aims to grow and bring back the butterfly and firefly in FTA.Revolutionary space provides the guide and encourages the users to explore and in the end, their final destination will be the same a beautiful natural world full of clean water pond, plants, butterfly and firefly. And the plants in different stages are different which can create a different scene in 4 seasons when the flowers open or the defoliation of the tree sences in 4 seasons. However, this scheme do not have close relationship with the site such as the mountain, houses and even the wetland are not actually integrated with the garden. So further drawings and design need to process after the mid term. Also, this scheme is lack of complexity and more functional space should be considered to be added in.

Therefore, the idea of constructed wetlands can tackle the problem of flooding, improving water quality, and provide a better habitat for the species in FTA at the same time. The complex located in the existing butterfly garden as it is an area that can connect both humans, species and environment together and the villagers already did some preservation strategy on saving the butterfly so I choose to locate the complex here to integrate with their strategies. The complex contains housing, market, insect lab, and different type of innovative farms such as vertical farms and aquaponics. The complex design is hugely combining with the current site elements such as mountains, ponds, and some abundant farmland and metal sheet houses.
