A FLORIST’S TIPS FOR MAKING YOUR WINTER WREATH
Winter wreaths are great to hang on your door or on a wall inside your home. These tips from Louisville florist, Tiffany Collins, will help you create a wreath using fresh ingredients that will dry beautifully and last all winter. When you are ready to take these
down, greens can be removed from the base, and the base can be used reused to create a new wreath for a new season!
Winter Wreath Making Tips: 1. CHOOSE YOUR BASE: There are lots of options available to
use as your wreath base. Wire frame bases allow you to choose the fullness, size, and shape of the wreath. Greenery will need to be attached with paddle wire to hold onto the base. Grapevine and straw wreaths already have some weight and fullness, and stems can be tucked into the base without wire. 2. SELECT YOUR PRIMARY GREENS: Winter is a great time
to create a wreath with fresh greenery since most greens available will dry really nicely and last all season. Cedar, pine, and magnolia are all great options. Start with these heavier greens to give the most coverage over your base. If using a wire frame, create small bundles of greens and affix them to the frame with paddle wire, being sure to overlap your bundles to cover the ends and wire. For straw and grapevine, insert stems into nooks in the base to create as much coverage as you would like. 3. ADD IN TEXTURE: Nestle textural pieces into the greens to
help fill in holes, add pops of color, and enhance the fullness of the wreath. Think berries, lighter greens, pine cones, anything to help you complete the look you are trying to achieve. Pine cones or other materials that don’t have stems can be hotglued, or you can attach a wooden floral pick to create a stem. If using a wire frame wreath, you can also incorporate these into your bundles in step 2. 4. FINISHING TOUCHES: Step back when you feel like you are
finished and look at the whole wreath. Check for any holes or gaps and fill in as needed. 5. HANG AND ENJOY YOUR WINTER WREATH!

Your Guide to Hosting the Ultimate Friendsgiving Family gatherings are great, but let’s not forget about those people in your life who feel just like family, too! Friendsgiving is the perfect excuse to gather your crew together for a little pre-holiday celebration. With some hearty food, good tunes, and of course great company, we present a guide to hosting your best Friendsgiving ever!
TWO WEEKS OUT, GET PREPARED! SEND INVITES. Invite your friends via text, email or an e-vite. Once you’ve confirmed who can make it, start a group text or email chain to
keep all communication in one place. DEFINE YOUR VIBE. When it comes to the look of your table, there’s no need to complete with Grandma’s fine china. Mismatched dishes and
silverware are very much ok and gives off a cool, eclectic look. Have fun with it and don’t stress about formality! SERVE IT UP POTLUCK STYLE. It’s a great way to get guests involved, but it also takes the pressure off of you! As the host, you’ll likely be
responsible for the “main dish” (gobble gobble), so a potluck gives you more time to brush up on your turkey basting skills. Just ask guests to contribute a side item to help complete the feast. Check out our honey glazed roasted veggies recipe if you need an idea!
THE MORNING OF... SEND OUT PARTY REMINDERS.
Group text your guests to confirm time and location with everyone (you don’t want anyone showing up while you’re
SET YOUR DINNER TABLE
still vacuuming the couch cushions!) Also, check to make sure everyone is still attending and make any lastminute dinner changes as needed. ADD YOUR CENTERPIECE. Keep your
centerpiece light and simple (no need to blow your paycheck.) Some unscented candles of various widths and height, possibly a few mini pumpkins and seasonal flower arrangements are all you need. Here’s a little cheat sheet to help you set the perfect holiday table!
DON’T FORGET THE BOOZE.
Set up your cocktail bar or bar cart.
Display snacks, drinks, glassware, a bottle opener, and your ice bucket. NOW COOK, COOK, COOK!
1. Dessert fork | 2. Dinner fork | 3. Dinner plate | 4. Salad plate | 5. Spoon | 6. Knife | 7. Salad fork | 8. Water cup | 9. Wine glass
PARTY TIME SET THE AMBIANCE. Get the tunes going and light the
candles. Designate a place to put bags and coats and show your friends to the cocktail bar to get the party started! TIME TO TOAST. When it’s time to eat, begin the feast
by giving a toast thanking your friends for being there. Invite everyone to serve themselves, sit and dig in!
RELAX AND ENJOY! CLEANING CAN WAIT. After dinner, break out some board
games and dessert, and relish in the food and friendship. SEND HOME PERSONALIZED FAVORS. While favors are not
a necessity, in keeping with the spirit of giving, we love the idea of handing out a little thank you. Send your Friendsgiving guests home with a personalized herb bundle!
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
MAKE YOUR OWN HERB BUNDLE
´ Craft Paper

HONEY GLAZED ROASTED VEGGIES

Have Yourself a Merry Little… Christma-Kwanz-Ukkah-etc.! One of the best parts of the season is that it’s socially acceptable, and kind of expected, to have lots of everything, all in the name of love! ‘Tis the season, right?! We already know it’s a bit pricey, a tad boozy and a smidgen calorific, but did you know it’s also the most wasteful time of the year? We humans are some generous beings it turns out, so it’s no wonder when the season flies in on its sleigh, we tend to go overboard. Let’s rein[deer] it in a bit and talk ways to go green this year without going Grinch!
GREEN TREE The great Christmas tree debate: Which is more sustainable – real or artificial? There are convincing and less-than-convincing arguments for both sides, so consider these environmentally responsible options when considering your centerpiece for the biggest holiday of the year.
ARTIFICIAL TREES: Artificial trees are plastic-based, which make them nonbiodegradable and will last 1,000 years in a landfill. So, if you prefer an artificial tree and don’t already have one, invest in a quality one that you will reuse for a looooong time (preferably forever) or shop one second hand.
REAL TREES: If you are one to go the real tree route, you’re not alone; there are approximately 25-30 million real Christmas trees sold every year, according to the National Christmas Tree Association. Buying real trees keeps your local economy strong, but it’s what you do with your tree after the holidays are over that counts. Don’t let your Fraser fir beauty wind up in a methane-producing landfill; do your research about how to best dispose of your tree locally or consider these environmentally responsible options: ´ RECYCLE . A recycled Christmas trees’ most common destiny is to be run through a wood chipper, which will make excellent mulch to enrich soil and prevent erosion. Research how you can recycle your tree in your community. ´ COMPOSTING. Haul your Christmas tree to the woods; it will return to the land like other fallen trees. ´ REPLANT. Consider buying a living, potted Christmas tree and replant it after the holidays. This is unquestionably the best way to give your tree a second life. This route requires some research and a little more TLC, but you’ll feel great

GIVE GIFTS THAT GIVE BACK . Every season is a good season to give back, but we especially love the idea of giving gifts that make a difference.
It’s easy to get wrapped up in over-buying. For those that are more environmentally conscious when it comes to shopping, we've rounded up the best options to give from the heart without taking from the planet. ´ GIVE EXPERIENCES, NOT GOODS. Kids may favor bright, shiny store-bought items, but most adults value anything that shows thoughtfulness. An hour’s massage at a local spa, a pottery or cooking class, or concert tickets are some great ideas for meaningful gifts not found on the store shelf. ´ GIVE LOCALLY MADE GIFTS. Check out local craft fairs and artisan shops. Many products in today’s marketplace come from all over the world, so the transportation impact contributes to greenhouse emissions. Locally made gifts are often one-of-akind and come without the added costs of transportation!

´ GIVE HOMEMADE GOODS. Homemade is heartfelt and gifts from the kitchen are always appreciated. Your time spent in the kitchen is probably no more than your time spent gift hunting; plus, your time, energy and culinary creativity is just as valuable as any store-bought gift. Homegrown herbs and spices are easy on the environment and likely won’t go to waste! ´ GIVE A GIFT THAT LASTS. A houseplant, for example, can last forever, helps purify the air, and will spark joy over and over! ´ GIVE SECOND -HAND. Giving previously loved gifts means no energy or resources are exhausted. Vintage clothing, sports equipment, electronics, instruments and technology are all great gifts that can be refurbished and upgraded if bought second-hand.
