If it’s happening in Kenmare, it’s in the Kenmare News Dear Editor, I am an asylum seeker, my name is Abid Nadeem from Pakistan and I the Atlantic Lodge for more then ten months. I want to share my experiences and feelings regarding my stay in kenmare. I was very scared when I came in Atlantic Lodge because it was too fare from the Dublin. I have been transferred in the month of November 2018 permanently from Dublin to Kenmare. At that time town was very quiet and no any one known to me. I was under the stress for few days. But with the passage of time, I found myself in peaceful and calm. The local community, they welcomed us with open hearts. They have been arranging each and every thing which we need to us. The Adult Education Centre and Family Resource Centre, they are playing a vital role for us in the shape of Education and extra curriculum activities. I have been participating in the coffee morning, drumming classes, joining the morning walking group and volunteer group for tidy up the town. By performing all these type of activities, I have been given an opportunity to integrate with the local community. I found the kenmare people very nice friendly and motivated. That was the reason they had celebrated the international day with us. I just want to give tribute to the beautiful people living in kenmare in my own style which is based on my true feelings. The qualities of the kenmare people are...

I must add met that I had never heard of a Fish Palace and when they were mentioned to me first I had a vision of the Disney movie ‘Finding Nemo' and of a king and queen fish surrounded by all the splendour of a royal court! Alas this is not the case. However due to some research by Dr John Goode, to who I owe thanks for the information on what they actually are and their use, I feel that maybe you would have interest in them and possibly be aware if any existed in this area. I would think that the Lauragh area, which many, many years ago had a thriving fishing industry, would be a likely spot for one. Fish Palaces were places where fish were cured. The ones we are aware of were located mostly along the South West Cork coast, most of them are forgotten about and not recorded, a few turn up in place names or local oral tradition. Something similar has happened to all the old lime kilns that one dotted the countryside, now long forgotten. According to the information supplied to me the word palace may be derived from the Irish word ‘prais' which means broken into little pieces, and several place names in West Cork suggest the palaces were located in these areas. These include a village on Heir Island called ‘Paris’, a spot near Ballydehob known locally as the ‘Palleshes’, Schull has a palace house and a Palace Strand and Dunmanus has a palace field. In 1750 Smith recorded that several fish palaces built for saving, preserving and sorting of pilchards survived in creeks around the Bay. Likewise Pocoke, an 18th century traveller to West Cork, observed fish palaces in Sherkin Island and Cape Clear. De Lato Cnayne recorded that there were many pressing walls on Whiddy Island used to extract oil from pilchards (Brean 2007 page 214). Harrison (1990 page 168) refers to a local belief that during the 18th century Lord Bantry owned a fish palace at tra an bhainc (bank strand) to extract oil from pilchards, the oil was then sold to a French man called Palmer who gave his name to a headland and rock nearby. During the famine a salting station was established by the Quakers on the same strand, it was intended that it would provide a model for fisherman so that employment and prosperity would prevent another catastrophe. An additional fish palace was located in Laurance Cove on the southside of Rinn naGall also from the time of the pilchard fishery. With all this information at hand you can understand why I’m surprised I have never heard of them before and also why some word of them never cropped up at some stage or another in this area. The fishing industry once flourished around much of the West coast of Ireland, according to old records it was active before 1500 and probably had its heyday in the 17th century when it was heavily invested in by the Great Earl of Cork (Richard Boyle, sometimes described as the richest man in the known world). In those days pilchards were the main catch, huge shoals of them came to the comparatively warm sheltered waters of the islands during the summer months alone with other oily fish such as herring and mackerel. Seine boats were commonly used for this enterprise. Today pilchards are rare, through a combination of overfishing and changing climate, the bountiful shoals no longer appear. Will we ever learn? The same scenario is now happening to the poor old mackerel. Although the fish are gone the remains of the industry are still to be seen, in particular the sites of some of the curing stations. The fish palace was a huge barrel with a drainhole and a channel for collecting the oil at the bottom. The barrel was filled with the pilchards and had a loose cover which was then forced down on the fish with heavyweights. Over time the oil of the fish came out the drain and was collected and stored, it was considered very valuable and was used for treating leather and as fuel for lamps. In those days, and remember we are talking about several centuries ago, the oil was more valuable than the fish. With the awful weather we have at the moment do not even mention hobby fishing!

SuperValu has just announced their biggest ever price cuts campaign across their own brand range, giving consumers an opportunity to make real savings on their shopping. This week Murphy’s SuperValu Kenmare set a task for one of its regular customers and here is what they had to report. The challenge was, I do my weekly shop as standard, while a member of Murphy’s SuperValu staff shadowed me, picking up the same product’s only in the Supervalu brand, the aim was to see the overall difference in price. We started at the fresh veg isle, heading down towards the breads and bakery, and soon enough I started to notice the prices had an extreme difference. When you are used to buying the same things in store week in and week out, you tend to not notice the competitor brand or price, so I continued on as normal stocking my trolley full of the brands I would normally get while barley noticing I was being shadowed. At the end of the shop, both trolleys were brought to the Tills, and we scanned through all of our rival items at the same time (This took a while) but we got there in the end. To say I was blown away was an understatement! My trolley of goods came to €188.87 while the SuperValu branded Trolley of goods same quantity of everything came to €97.99! That’s a saving of €90.88! I cannot believe the value of the own brand items, the savings alone are incredible! But how does it all taste? I invited some friends over, not telling them what I had done, and unwrapped the goods so as not to show them where they were bought to see exactly the reactions, and boy was I surprised.
First up came the soups, I chose the chicken and veg SuperValu own brand soup, my guests loved it! Then came the Supervalu own brand chicken Goujions, potato wedges and beans and I was asked if the Goujions were homemade. Needless to say, I am now converted to a Supervalu way of shopping! I had so much fun doing the Shadow shop and would like to thank Murphy’s for being such good sports. With a €90.88 savings, it’s clear in the name, there really is Super Value at Supervalu!
Did you know?
Not only is SuperValu leading the charge on price, they are also setting the bar for greener retail environments. These exciting price cuts follow the recent announcement that all bags used in SuperValu stores will soon be 100 per cent compostable and reusable; taking 2.5 million plastic bags out of circulation over the next year. SuperValu are the first Irish retailer to introduce such measures, further evidence of their commitment to a greener environment and positioning them as leaders in the industry. SuperValu serves over 2.6 million customers every week and has 221 stores nationwide. Together with its retail partners, SuperValu employs approximately 14,500 colleagues, making it one of the State’s largest private sector employers. SuperValu continues to source locally, wherever possible, which helps to sustain 30,000 jobs in the Irish economy.

Busy few months for Kenmare Macra. In August we were at the Kilgarvan Show with our ‘pull a tractor’ campaign. Teams of 3 took on pulling a tractor 12metres and flipping a tyre back the course! It was a great day out despite the weather, and we’d like to thank everyone who took part and to those who came over and chatted to us. We might make it an annual event. Some of our girls took part in the Inter Kenmare 5 a side soccer competition. They had a great few days out, they really enjoyed themselves and it prepared them for the Macra Indoor 5 a side competition. At the end of August we took part in the county round of bowling in Tralee and two of our members came out top bowlers on the night. September was very busy. We started off the month by heading to the Eclispse Centre in Blackwater for a day of team bonding. We had a great day out and everyone got to know each other a little bit more. We also held our annual mouse racing night, this year in The Atlantic Bar, and had a great night with our MC Mr Personality 2019, John Martin Carroll keeping everyone entertained. A special thank you to everyone involved in the organizing of such a great night and to everyone who came and supported the club, we’ll see you all again next year.
The day after our mouse racing, our boys team headed to Baraduff to take on Killarney Macra in the county round of 7 a side football. The boys came out on top after the game went to extra time. Our girls team went straight to the national finals as there was no other girls’ team. The national final was held in John Mitchels, Tralee, in October and both teams were unlucky on the day, but it was a great achievement to have two teams at the national finals two years in a row. The county round of Beef and Sheep Stock judging was held in Kenmare Co-op Mart in October and we had 5 members taking part on the night. Club member Chloe Matt Twomey came second in the Sheep stock judging and went on to represent the county in the National Final at this year’s Macra Rally. In October three of our members headed to Tralee IT for the county round of welding, Richard Moss Rice won out the competition and will now represent the county in the National Finals. Kerry Macra are holding their 75th Anniversary Dinner Dance in Ballygarry House Hotel, Tralee on November 30th. Tickets are €35 and there will be music by UI Bhriain and a DJ. It is set to be a great night out for everyone! Tickets are available from Sean Joy at 086 1508787 or through Kenmare Macra. Keep an eye on our facebook page for regular updates on meetings and upcoming competitions.

Kenmare & District Garden Club At our October meeting Rachel Darlington, a regular Irish Garden Magazine contributor, gave an inspiring illustrated talk entitled ‘Exciting annuals’ ,where she stressed the usefulness of annuals and tender perennials in creating instant colour in our gardens as they are available in every shape, size and colour. There is quite an amount of dedication required, however, from the purchase of the seeds, the sowing, the pricking out to the eventual planting but if all goes to plan there will be a uniform display from June to November with watering, dead-heading and weeding being essential! Her recent book ‘Journal of an Irish Garden’ is a collection of articles for the Irish Garden publication over the past eight years. Catch her on YouTube at ‘Gardening at Douentza.’ The concluding lecture for 2019 was given by Alan Witham of Just Roses, Kilfinane, accompanied by his wife and business partner Josie. It proved to be a delightful finale to a busy horticultural year. With great charm Alan lured us into his passion for roses. How could we not like a flower that blooms from June to November, full of fragrance and beauty, in such variety such as old shrub roses, bush, floribunda, carpet and patio roses, standard roses, rambling and climbers! He encouraged us to buy ‘Irish grown’ roses which will adapt to our soil conditions. Top of his list for successful cultivation is ‘feed, feed, feed’ and ‘cut back hard’. He answered our many questions with patient charm and the club looks forward to an outing to Just Roses in 2020. Christmas Party will take place on December 5th for members & partners only. Next meeting with be our AGM on February 6th 2020 where the list of speakers 2020 will be announced. All new members are most welcome.

The Macroom Bye Pass is gone out to tender and ground works should take place very soon. The project will take 3.5 years to complete and will involve the construction of 22km KM of duel carriageway. The Adare Bye pass has been given Cabinet approval to go for planning permission.
Clinics:
Available at all times on 087 2904325 or at 5 Main Street, Kenmare. Also I can meet people after work in Kenmare, Kilgarvan, Tuosist, Lauragh, Sneem, Tahilla, Blackwater, Templenoe, Bonane. I also am also in South and Mid-Kerry a couple of times a month.
Footpaths-Kenmare: Thankfully further footpath improvements have taken place or are due to take place around Kenmare town including Killowen, Dromnevane and The Top of the Bell Height. I will continue to push for further funding for repairs and extensions of footpaths. Thankfully Kerry County Council again have a Programme in place for footpaths, as few repairs took place throughout the County from 2007- 2017. Kenmare Hospital – extra beds needed: I made numerous representations in relation to the provision of extra beds at the Hospital and will continue to do so. I also asked Minister Brendan Griffin TD to pursue with the HSE the need to open the first floor of Kenmare Community Nursing Unit, it’s disgraceful that such a fantastic facility is not being utilized to its full potential especially when so many older persons are in genuine need of care. The following is an extract of the response issued by the HSE to Minister Griffin: “There are currently 19 beds open at Kenmare Community Nursing Unit, with the potential to open up to a further 21 in the future. While we planned to open a number of additional beds on a phased basis, we have unfortunately faced challenges in recruiting the extra nurses we need. Increasing capacity at Kenmare Community Nursing Unit remains a priority for us, and we continue to make intensive efforts to recruit. The most recent recruitment campaign was September 2019. Every effort has been made to recruit the necessary staff, and we have run three recruitment campaigns in the last year alone. Additional beds cannot open until we recruit the necessary number of staff. We understand the importance of Kenmare Community Nursing Unit to the local community, and excellent care provided by the staff there. We will continue to work to extend the services there. If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me”.

THE LATE MR GAY BYRNE RIP
MICHAEL HEALY-RAE TD KENMARE INNOVATION CENTRE I was glad to officially open the Kenmare Innovation centre for Mr & Mrs Sean & Mag Jones in Kilmurry recently. This is an excellent facility which is providing a modern way for businesses to carry out their work be it small or large from one person needing a work station or co working space to a larger business the Jones can accommodate all types of businesses which wish to locate to the town. I am actively trying everything possible to bring and attract more business to Kenmare and it is of paramount importance that facilities such as the Kenmare Innovation centre is there for them. If more jobs are to be created in Kenmare we cannot or should not rely on the state as to do so would mean we would be waiting for a long time. We must do this for ourselves and I wish Sean, Mag & family every success in their endeavours.
YOUNG FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR 2019
It was with absolute great delight for the family, friends and supporters of Sean O’Shea to hear him been justifiably given the title of ‘Young Footballer of the Year 2019’. A title which is richly deserved. The great thing about Sean and all the other young players that we have from our parishes is that they have many many more years please god of a glowing career ahead of them in the fields of play. We are all looking forward to the years to come. Again sincere congratulations to Sean, he is an inspiration to so many young people and we are all tremendously proud of him.
A LISTENING EAR
Last week I launched my new book ‘A listening ear’ which has more stories from the heart of rural Ireland in the Gleneagle Hotel. I want to thank all the people that came from all parts of Kerry to the launch and I hope everybody enjoyed the night. The book will be available from all book stores and I hope that people will enjoy it.

It would be fair to say that everybody in Ireland has their own fond memories of the late Gay Byrne whether it was from television or his radio programme each of which played such an important role in everybody lives. It gave us great memories of an Ireland that was evolving into a more modern society. He was there through a time when electricity and running water was coming into homes and we were becoming more progressive. He certainly raised the bar when it came to social issues be it as they were controversial issues at the time such as contraception, religion, and all of the other interesting topics and debates that took place over the last 50 years. He was a regular visitor to Kerry and indeed Kenmare to his favourite home from home to the great hospitality of the Park Hotel. He did great work for the Rose of the Tralee festival for many years as the presenter and we all have great memories of this. Rest in Peace.
Are you waiting for a Hip or Knee Replacement?
On Monday 2nd Dec I have organised a trip to Belfast for anyone waiting for the above procedures under the Cross Border Directive scheme The Cross border directive is a scheme where you pay for the consultation and operation yourself and you apply to HSE for a refund afterwards and this is a guaranteed refund On the 2nd of Dec you will meet the consultant and if a replacement is agreed you will then do your post operative assessment with the view to having your operation carried out in Feb/March 2020 If you wish to avail of this service please contact me as soon as possible to book your space
Donkeys Donkeys have always held a special place in the hearts of people in Rural Ireland I am very disappointed in the Governments changes in the scheme that requires stocking requirements in relation to donkeys, From 2020 50% of an applicants stocking can only be filled by stocking donkeys and the balance must be filled by using other animals. I am fearful that across the country that if donkeys will no longer be required I would be totally opposed to them being slaughtered or neglected in any way. They do need a considerable amount of care with their hooves etc to keep them in good general health and I think it would be in the interest of the donkeys themselves to allow the scheme to continue as it was and I have asked the Government to do so I recently visited Kenmare Nursing Home and was glad to meet all the residents Glad to stand with retired ESB workers during their recent protest

2. Keep a check on trees around the garden to make sure they are secure in the ground and if unsteady support them by staking. Remove broken branches and limbs with a saw or loppers to obtain a clean cut to prevent rotting.
Gardening with Gardening notes for November… …the Willowfield Way ! Even though it is still November, Christmas is coming and there may not be too many dry days between now and then so there is a bit of a rush on now to get the garden sorted …….
1. Fallen leaves should be removed weekly from the lawn until they have all finished falling. If they are allowed to accumulate they will cause bare patches in the lawn and will encourage moss growth so rake them off whenever you get a chance. These fallen leaves will make great compost if you can pile them up where they won’t blow away again. By spring time you will be able to dig them into the garden soil for extra nutrition for your trees and shrubs. If the ground does dry out somewhat give the lawn one last cut before winter sets in just to help even out any recent growth and it will also help pick up fallen leaves.
3. Tidy up the shrub bed at the same time as carrying out pruning. Remember not to prune spring flowering shrubs at this point as you will be removing all their flower buds.
7. With winter approaching the birds in the garden will find it harder to find food themselves so to help them out set up a bird feeding station in your garden that would be safe from cats. Hanging feeders will prevent larger Crows and Magpies from steeling all the food at the expense of the smaller birds. On a bird table an up turned wire frame of a hanging basket can act as a defence from these larger birds as well.
4. Tidy up decaying vegetation from the vege. garden and apply Farm Yard Manure and/or sea weed so it can break down over the winter ready for digging in during the spring.
8. In the garden centre we also have a wide range of Tree lights, battery lights, candles and decorations as well as a selection of gardening gift ideas so drop in to see our CHRISTMAS SHOP.
5. There is just still time for planting up spring flowering bulbs in the garden. Regular Daffodils and Tulips can be planted up amongst the Shrubs and crocus, dwarf Tulips and Miniature Narcissi can be used in window boxes and patio containers closer to the house.
This year’s edition of the KENMARE CHRONICLE and the KENMARE YEARBOOK will also be available !
6. With Christmas fast approaching there is also a wide range of flowering house plants that can be used to add colour and a natural touch to your house decorations which we will be stocking out in the garden centre and we will be discussing these next month . Hyacinth, Azalea, Cyclamen, Solanum, Capsicum, Amarylus, Orchids and of course the Poinsettia are now all part and parcel of xmas decorations.
9. And of course THE CHRISTMAS TREES will be in stock at Willowfield very soon; non shedding Nordmund and Noble Fir of varying shapes and sizes to fit your specific requirements….. so come on out and pick your tree . Weekly deliveries from the last week in November. Happy Gardening... Hoe, Hoe, Hoe !!

Next Meeting December 3rd 7pm - Brooklane Firstly this month I would just like to say a massive thank you to all the volunteers who helped out over the Halloween Howl festival. The festival has just completed its eighth year and is going from strength to strength. Volunteers are a huge part of that success, and I think it is really important to acknowledge and thank the people who take the time out of busy schedules to donate their time to clubs, to marshal events, put up and take down town decorations etc. I would also like to thank the committees themselves. It is easy to forget that the Sports Club committees, the Youth Club committees, the KMEG committee, the Tidy Towns committee are all made up of Volunteers, Volunteers that give up their time throughout the year to work towards a common goal for the town. The theme running through the reviews of the event this year is how amazing a town Kenmare is in the way that everyone gets involved and the great atmosphere of fun around.
On the 12th of November the draft plan for the Socio Economic Plan for Kenmare was launched. To quote the plan “The plan sets out 100 actions and initiatives for the social, economic and environmental development of Kenmare. Linked by a distinctive vision and theme, the plan prioritises integrated, innovative, sustainable development and seeks cooperation, balance and equity in project planning, implementation and resourcing. Particular emphasis has been placed on innovation and on best practice to deliver sustainable, future-oriented, place-based development. As an outcome, the plan envisages the development of Kenmare as a progressive, vibrant and inclusive community, where guided by the principles of sustainability, its social, cultural environmental and economic assets are harnessed & aligned to achieve an improved quality of life for allâ€?. The ďŹ rst meeting was well attended and everyone is invited to the follow up meeting on December 3rd in the Brooklane Hotel at 7pm. The more voices that attend the clearer the vision we can create for Kenmare. Whether you have attended a meeting before or not, you are more than welcome to come along. If anyone would like a copy of the plan, you can email marketing@kenmare.ie and we will send you out a copy! Next up is Christmas and we are delighted to be turning on the lights on November 30th this year with the blessing of the crib, music in the square and a visit from Santa and Mrs Claus to turn on the lights and kick off the festive season. Keep an eye out for our Christmas brochure which will be available around town and also on social media and the Kenmare.ie website! Photo: Nick Cavanagh Photography

Much to celebrate as Taobh Linn Social Centre marks 10th birthday! Kenmare Community Care was established in 1973 to ‘fill a need’ in the community. A ‘Meals on Wheels’ service was formed and operated from Kenmare District Hospital, followed by 20 years of sandwiches and tea on a Wednesday and every Friday. The service gradually developed and by the late eighties meals were cooked and served from ‘The Health Centre’ Bell Height, Henry Street. By 1999 the service had progressed to providing a hot meal in the ‘Old Boys School’ on Shelbourne Street, serving a growing number of older people and establishing a Social Centre.
Taobh Linn Social Centre is managed by Kenmare Community Care and provides a 3 course lunch service onsite at a nominal/affordable rate 6 days a week, in a friendly comfortable atmosphere to the older people in need within the community. A ‘Meals on Wheels’ service is also provided from the centre 5 days a week to the wider Kenmare community. Staffing for the centre is provided through local Community Employment Schemes and the local Tus Scheme, while The Rural Social assist us with our Poly Tunnel which in turn provides the centre with home grown veg, from ‘fork to plate’. Social inclusion is also a priority for the centre, through a variety of activities like Arts & Crafts, Exercise, Whist, Day Trips and projects between St Johns National school and Taobh Linn , we try to focus and address these specific needs. Taobh Linn is an essential part of our Community and links directly back to the real needs of ‘our people’. The centre relies heavily on fundraising events and local support and we really appreciate all the support that facilitates the ongoing provision of this vital service. She was always there to help and offer her time, especially at the Annual Seniors Christmas party. We are very grateful to her and the friendships that were held. She will be greatly missed by all, and the committee would like to offer our sincere condolences to all her family, especially her husband Garrett.

John Herlihy, Scheme Manager Taobh Linn, Cluid Housing
“From a personal and a Cluid Housing point of view it’s great to be here to celebrate 10 years of Taobh Linn. Even though Cluid Housing have not been involved the whole 10 years we would like to think that we have played some small part it making Taobh Linn the success that it is today. Taobh Linn shows what can be achieved when the community joins together and works towards a common goal. Hopefully Taobh Linn will continue to be successful and flourish for many more years in the future”.
Tanya O’Sullivan – Taobh Linn Social Centre, Co Ordinator
I am delighted to be involved in the managing of the centre for the last 8 Years. The ‘Kenmare’ community have a ‘Jewel’ in their town for the older person. I have seen the centre develop from a meal centre into a beacon for the older person. We are successfully out reaching our meals on wheels to those in the community who don’t have the capacity to make it to the centre. The activities stimulate and engage, and provide essential social interaction to support mental health. Day trips and the annual trip allow people to step outside their community, while the Art & Crafts, Exercise, Whist and the Christmas party keep them firmly connected to the people. The centre has also forged positive relationships with the local community bodies, Tus, CE , Public Health Nurses and the HSE which supports community links and of course the Cluid Housing relationship is essential to the success of Taobh Linn. But the real success is the older people who use our centre, the wonderful staff and the beautiful meals that bring us all together and that can never be overstated. I would like to thank everyone who has been involved with centre in the last 10 years to bring it to where we are today, the committee past and present, committed staff, loyal volunteers, trip organised especially John O’Sullivan, Mary Fitzgerald and Frances O’Sullivan, our Schemes Mangers, local Suppliers, Food Cloud, class instructors and general community groups and business.
May we keep going for another 10 years! Thank you. Finally RIP our friend Liam Doyle.

Welcome back Kestrels! We have had another great month here at Kestrels HQ. Let’s start with the U12 Girls. They travelled to Milltown to take on St. Colmans. The home side had a quick start with two baskets inside the first minute and a half. The Kestrels responded swiftly with two fantastic scores from Roisin Liathan to level the first quarter 8-8. In the second quarter both teams displayed their impressive defensive techniques, resulting in one score each. They left the court at half time still tied at 10-10. During the third quarter, Ava Moriarty showed unbelievable defence, forcing St. Colmans to shoot from a distance. Unfortunately, three of these shots hit the target and the period ended 16-12 to Colmans. The final seven minutes once again, showed the Kestrels amazing defensive skills, lead by Erin O’ Sullivan. Regrettably, the Kestrels lay-up opportunities just didn’t convert which left them two baskets shy of levelling the game. Well done girls, you all showed fantastic team spirit and brilliant sportsmanship. Thank you to coaches Rory and Michael and to everyone who came out to support. Next we have the U16 Girls D1. Our girls tackled St. Marys of Castleisland on home turf. The first quarter was very defensive. Kenmare were on top of their opponents at every chance, not letting them get the outside shots up. Fast breaks from Kenmare put St. Marys defence under pressure. Tania McCormack scored an impressive seven points, ending the first quarter 13- 9 to Kenmare. During the third quarter quick passing from Kenmare broke Castleislands defence allowing great baskets from inside the key. However, St. Marys got their head back in the game and finished the quarter ahead for the first time in game, 32-30. In the last quarter, luck wasn’t on the Kestrels side with a lot of baskets just not wanting to stay in the basket. Their opponents took advantage of this and ploughed on with fast breaks and impressive passing. Final score 37-45 to St. Marys. Well done girls! Congratulations to our first ever U17 Boys on their first game of the season away to Killarney Cougars. The game did not go in their favour, however they all played brilliantly and looking at the pure talent these young lads have, there will be plenty of victories in the future.

Laura Hatton (20) 34pts Kenmare Golf Club Singles 2019 Mark O’Donovan prevailed in the club championship singles final with a 2up victory over his uncle Denis Murphy. Denis got off to a hot start taking a 3 hole lead after just 4 holes. Mark settled into the game over the next few holes and took a 3 hole lead by the 11th with a birdie and a string of pars. The 12th was halved with two excellent pars before Denis fought back to win the 13th with a par to claw back to 2 down. 14 was halved before Denis played his approach on 15 to just a couple of inches for a gimmee birdie. Mark responded by hitting a 60 yard pitch to 7 feet and converting the birdie putt for an unlikely half to remain 2 up with 3 to play. With his back against the wall Denis wasn’t to be defeated and won 16 by capitalizing on a sloppy second shot by Mark to bring the gap to just 1. A tap in par on the 17th looked to have the match closed out for Mark but Denis made sure it was going the distance with a world class up and down from over the back of the green. Under pressure , both players split the 18th fairway. Ultimately Marks two putt par was enough to win the holes and ensure victory and family bragging rights. Nearly 60 men entered the stableford qualifier in May with the top 16 qualifying for the knockout stages. En route to victory Mark played Paul Walsh, Derry Murphy and Bosco McGearailt before Denis in the final, giving away 50 shots through the course of the knockout stages. 2020 Around the Corner Kenmare Golf Club would like to wish our 2020 Captains the very best for their year in charge. James Murphy is the new Men’s Captain, and Cindy Freeman is the Lady Captain for 2020. Both captains have taken office, and are already off to a great start, jointly organising a massive Thanksgiving-themed competition at Kenmare Golf Club on Sunday 24th. This is open to everybody, and is a team-based competition where you can bring a partner or enter a draw for a team. The theme for the day is red, white and blue, food is included with your entry and this will be a great day. Check at Kenmare GC or on the club Facebook date for specific details.

St. John of God Community Services Kenmare, as one of the nominated recipients from the Ring of Beara Cycle 2019 wish to thank the committee and organisers for the generous donation received. We will ensure that your generosity as always will be used for the sole benefit of those we support day to day in the local area. We were honoured to be selected and delighted to volunteer on the day. The tremendous atmosphere which the cycle generates in Kenmare and along the Beara Peninsula is very special and unique. We also thank Oliver Kirwan of Elite Events Management, KMEG and the numerous volunteers for their support and commitment to make this year’s cycle such a fantastic success. Again, we extend our gratitude to all and look forward to The Ring of Beara Cycle 2020. Shane Dalton & Martina Moore, St. John of God Services Kenmare Another fantastic season was enjoyed by Kenmare Bay Sailing Club. First off, we would like to take this opportunity to extend a special thank you to Danny McCarthy and Star Outdoors for allowing our club use of the pier each season. We had a lot fun during the summer, from the pure enjoyment of being out on the water and having friendly races to enjoying a club bar-b-que, which gave members new and old a chance to socialise and get to know each other. The annual AGM was held in October at the Brooklane Hotel and the following committee members for 2020 were elected: Commodore/ ISA Liaison: Dave O’Donovan Treasurer: Tom Meagher Secretary: Joanna Grant Training Officer: Jamie Blandford Safety Officer: Paul Keogh Children’s Officer: Bridget Veldhoen Among the topics discussed were safety, including operating the safety boat, and what the KBSC would like to accomplish as a club in the future. Two of our club members completed the ISA powerboat course early in the season, and going forward we would like members to have the opportunity to take part in a safety boat course as well as learning practical sailing and racing skills. For the future we hope the club will continue to expand and give young and old in the community the opportunity to get on the water and try sailing. Members of our club volunteered for the Quest Adventure in October and also bag packing at Supervalu to raise funds to help cover club costs such as insurance. KBSC would like to thank Martina, the staff at Supervalu and everyone who supported our club on the day. We look forward to another exciting year! If you would to get involved in sailing, contact Dave O’Donovan 087 762 9813 or Tom Meagher 083 188 4330.

Help Brú Columbanus Keep Families Together by Heike O’Sullivan
If you have ever been unfortunate enough to have a family member so seriously ill in one of Cork’s hospitals that you want or need to be close at hand, then you may be familiar with the difficulty of not just having to take time off work but also with the cost and hassle involved in arranging accommodation for yourself in Cork city. Obviously, a family’s first concern is for the wellbeing of their loved ones; it is often only later that issues such as cost for hotels, meals, petrol, and also stress to oneself become apparent.

After selling their Cork city centre premises for a substantial sum, the Knights of St. Columbanus wanted to invest the proceeds in a local, community based project. The Order recognised the need for a ‘home away from home’ for far-away families of critical or long-term ill relatives, thereby reducing many long journeys up and down to Cork’s hospitals. So, the idea of Brú Columbanus was born. On a site just a few minutes’ walk from CUH, the Knights – together with some once-off funding from Cork City Council and the HSE - then invested their money and a lot of hard work into purpose-built, 26 bedroom hostel-style accommodation for relatives of seriously ill patients in Cork hospitals, in particular relatives of severely sick children. Opened in September 2005, Brú Columbanus benefits from a committed team of management assisted by an army of regular volunteers. It is able to spare patients’ relatives great expense and provides a welcoming and homely environment at a time of crisis. Once you have been referred to the house by a clinical nurse manager at any one of Cork’s hospitals, you can call a comfortable, quiet room your own for as long as you need, completely free of charge. You will have use of the fully equipped kitchens, lounge areas, a children’s play room and a chapel. You can keep to yourself or hook up with other guests who are in similar situations, drawing on your shared experiences. I have benefited myself from the amazing hospitality of Brú Columbanus staff and volunteers for lengthy stays when my husband underwent cancer surgeries at CUH in 2016 and 2017, and I found the facility to be an absolute live saver. Amazingly, this non-profit organisation and registered charity doesn’t receive any financial support from the Irish Government and is entirely reliant on private and corporate donations and fund-raisers to cover the running costs for the house. That’s why events such as sponsored walks or runs, table quizzes, and seasonal fundraising opportunities are absolutely vital to Brú Columbanus. By taking part, or purchasing, or simply donating to this fabulous cause, you will help to ensure that families will not be turned away from their door at a time of need. Sounds familiar? (Xmas hint...) So, please, if you can spare some cash at this expensive time of year, consider Brú Columbanus as your chosen charity. Thank you! Take part in the 7th Annual O’Sullivan Family Walk, leaving Caherdaniel village at 12 noon on Saturday, 28th December. Buy Brú Columbanus Christmas Cards. Available in their online shop, together with other handy gifts such as hats, caps, golf ball sets... Give the Christmas gift of a ticket for the annual Brú Columbanus Ladies’ Lunch on Saturday, 4th January 2020 at the Kingsley Hotel, Cork. €50 per person including entertainment. Great fun guaranteed! Make a donation – quick, simple and ever so much appreciated! Become a Friend of Brú Columbanus. They can never have enough friends...
