Welcome again everyone to our fourth annual bull sale. Excitement builds in me everyday as I analyze the bull pen we have on offer this year. I feel stronger than ever that these bulls have come to be the very best we have offered yet. They are definitely the quietest bulls we have ever had the pleasure to work with. My granddaughters are out there with us in the corrals quite regularly and have there favourites picked out based on who they can scratch.
The industry is stronger than it has ever been with record breaking numbers in dollar values each week at our local auction marts and through purebred sales as well as genetics. We have tweaked our feed program a little more and are so very impressed with the results. Working closely with Barry Yaremcio from Yaremcio Ag Consulting has been a great experience as his knowledge is quite something and we have learned a lot from him. We have kept the high starch hot feed out of the program but yet have had great gain from high quality forage supplemented with oats, a high protein pellet fed at just over a pound per head per day. We have had an avg. daily gain right at 3.0 lbs per bull per day. We have allowed these bulls to mature at a controlled rate. We have confidence that these bulls are bred and fed to last for our customers.
Again we welcome Mark Holowaychuk and his OBI team who work closely with us throughout the year on female sales as well as our annual bull sale. Any questions can be directed to Mark, myself or Kendra and Matt. Thank you to those who have purchased from us in the past and we look forward to meeting you soon again! Come have a visit during our open house on March 4 2025.

Right from the heart of the program comes this amazing young bull that is the epitome of the term HERDSIRE. BAB 231M has all the bases covered. He has tons of performance with mass and volume
and great bone quality. He’s deep and long with large testicles and an incredibly good foot under him. AS WELL HES A HEIFER BULL!!! He is sired by the $80,000 Showtime bull that we were fortunate enough to buy a semen package on. His dam is a high quality mama in the ever rapidly growing “Lady 31” cow family. She has a high quality udder and did an amazing job on this guy. Take a second look or take the time to come have a look. You won’t be disappointed!

Another big soggy deep fella here. The Easy Rider bull has left us with some fantastic females and this guy should do the same for you. Big and stout, long like the train. He has a great disposition and is super quiet. The rib shape and depth he carries is what we strive for. Heavy bone and all kinds of muscle in him. His calves will put pounds on that scale come sale day. His dam is highly regarded around here as an all around producer. This guy will add frame and size to your moderate females. If you miss him in the pen he surely gonna come find you, he’s just that quiet!

One of the deepest quartered bulls in the offering. Lots of length of spine and muscle shape. His dam was a big part of our program in recent years. She had a really nicely balanced udder and did a great job on this one. Have a good look here!

Here’s a little different breeding twist for you. A Brookdale Brutus calf that has been the topic of a little heated contention at the coffee table. Should we keep him and use him or do we let him go. His mother comes from the most productive family that
ever walked here at Avelyn. They just flat produce year after year. I dare say he is the deepest ribbed bull in the offering. He’s got great big nutts and he will give that shape and rib to his offspring I’m sure. His mother has a great udder and a bright future as she is only just a second calver. Brutus calves have been well received in sales these last couple of years.

This guy has alot of great attributes to him. Thick and soggy, beautiful dam, long spined, big topped with that “I am a herd bull“ presence. We always admired the Hendrix bull for his thickness, deep rib and how well he moved. This calf reminds us a lot of him. The ‘Pride 702’ family has done well for us. They all had that great feminine head that we desire and quality udders that stood the test of time

I must say the Showtime sons are both very attractive in their makeup. He has the kind of eye appeal that keeps you coming back to him. Lots of round muscle and big top in him that always draws attention his way. The Zara cows have always been a standout cow family around here. She has that feminine look and well balanced udder. The Showtime sons are very arguably a top sire group here this year as his half brother is the leadoff in the sale. 032M also has the highest ADG this year of a whopping 4.0 ADG.
Moufassa as he is named, was a King in the movie. His dam 05B could be a Queen here at Avelyn. She is a big deep bodied cow that keeps us wanting a whole herd like her. Add in Cudlobe Growth Fund 20J as his sire you should have Herdbull candidate all around. This could very well be the sleeper you want to watch for. Great calf with high predictability in his pedigree.
No matter how many times I go past the pen this Atlantis son always catches my eye. A very balanced individual that you have to admire right through end to end and top to bottom. He won’t be hard to find on sale day. Big boned and a deep soggy individual here again. The maternal grandam was purchased through the great KBJ dispersal several years back. Some of the most honest hardworking cows we ever purchased.
Big time heifer bull here that allows for those sleep easy nights at calving time that we all cherish. With a mother like 172F this guys calves should pop with the high performers. Lots of cow power back in this pedigree with sires like Xcaliber, Bravo, Charlo and the Soo Line Lady cow. Oh did I forget to mention the old Pride 172W cow here at Avelyn. Ya she earned the right to die here on the farm. I would say the most talked about cow that ever walked here.
AVELYN EPIC 05’17
If you need heifer bull power this one checks all of the boxes. 153M is the kind we desire in our keeper pen for heifers. Long sided calf with a beautiful dam. You just have to admire the balance and clean front end on this guy. 153M is the kind that will give you calves that slip right out as babies on those first calf heifers. He has the numbers to support this too with a big spread from birthweight to calving ease. With that 72 pound birthweight three stars probably aren’t enough on this one.
The Fortune 872 calves have always left a lasting impression here. They stand the test of time. He left us some great daughters that are impressing us more and more. The 100M calf should do the same. Sleep easy calving bull here from a very balanced cow. 12 LOT 13 LOT

Here we have a Hendrix son that easily could have led off the whole deal this year. This guy has that commanding presence and style that makes him so appealing to the eye. Lots of length of spine, great foot, square hipped and lots of width and top in him. Then we go to the maternal side and I say double wow. The 202E cow puts the package all together. Oldest daughter of the 172W cow I mentioned in earlier in lot 10’s footnotes. That makes this guy a maternal sib to the Lot 10 calf. Maybe you want to double up and take them both for heifers. You won’t regret it! 202M is a bull you have to see in person to really appreciate, especially with a 68 lb birthweight.
This is another Brutus calf that has come to shine more and more throughout his life. Lots of middle and hind quarter development. Great foot under him as well. His dam is one of the great uddered daughters of Fortune 872’18 that I have talked about in previous notes. Look for him on sale day. Bonus on him is he works well on heifers too.
Another Bravo son with a little more punch to him. Long sided with a frame that the feedlots love so they can put on the pounds. Lots of bone and and great testicular development. 972M also has a super quiet dispostion. His maternal half brother was last years high seller who went all the way to the east coast to O’Faelan Farms, Ron Whalen from PEI.
PEDERSEN EASY RIDER 412E

053M has that great look with a nice head and skull structure, tight shoulders and is long sided. In his pedigree you see cows like Baldridge Isabel Y69. She shows up in many pedigrees for a good reason. Her genetics are just that good. On his dams side you see that she is Easy Rider daughter. First thing we talk about Easy Rider is just how great the udders are on his daughters. Maternal grand sire to this one is Remington Old Post 27W. To this day id say I don’t think I’ve seen bigger or better feet than that bull had. All good reasons to consider this guy for your next herdbull.

Here is the only Potent bull calf born in our barn last year. Several heifer calves born and they ALL made the keeper pen. RAML Potent 8427 had a very high customer appreciation score with Semex and for good reason. He brings a lot of great things to the table. 511M is a very proud masculine calf for his age. He would work well on cows and large framed heifers that maybe need that extra dimension in their calves.

The feeding philosophy at Avelyn Angus is to grow and develop bulls and heifers to allow them to express their genetic potential. The feeding programs are adjusted at 100 pound increments to maintain appropriate growth rates. Grain and supplement feeding rates increase with animal size, but Dave Hofstra does not exceed a combined total weight of twelve pounds per head per day when feeding growing bulls that are 1300 pounds or larger. This reduces the risk of hoof and leg problems. With good growing conditions in 2024, forage quality harvested is higher than average, which reduced the amount of grain and supplement required in the rations.

Welcome to our 4th Annual Bull & Female sale. As the 2025 sale season kicks off, we would like to thank-you for taking the time to flip through our catalogue. We know there are endless options when it comes to selecting your next herd bull or replacement female so we appreciate you considering our program. Once again, we are teaming up with Avelyn Angus to offer you a top notch set of Black and Red Angus bulls and females.
2025 is shaping up to be a record year so far with never-before-seen record prices at auction marts across the country. It truly is an exciting time to be in the cattle business. That being said its also a great time to focusing on herd improvement. I’ve said a few times “it doesn’t hurt so bad to see the average ones go down the road when you get paid well for them.”
Above average snowfall so far this winter will hopefully give us enough spring run off to fill up a few dugouts and bring on the grass early. Honestly, I’m trying to find something positive to say about the weather as I sit here writing these footnotes in -34-degree temperatures trying to keep the cows and calves’ content and hoping the cows due to calve will hold off till this extreme cold stint is over. On the bright side Balzac Billy predicts an early spring so hopefully we are one day closer to some longer days with warmer weather.
This year’s offering is one we are extremely proud of. We always strive to go off the beaten path when making genetic selections and aim high to chase the best curve bender genetics we can find. The bulls have been developed on 16% Right Way Classic pellets from Country Junction Feeds with free choice hay, oat greenfeed and Uniblock 20% Elite mineral tubs. We have always and will continue to feed our bulls with their future in mind. The goal being to challenge their genetics for gains but keep them in athletic body condition. The heifers on offer stem from our most productive cow families and if they weren’t in the sale they would be in our keeper pen. They have been developed on 16% Right Way Classic pellets, free choice hay and Uniblock 20% Elite mineral tubs as well.
The annual open house will once again be at the farm on March 2 with viewing of the offering plus refreshments and hospitality. We welcome you to come and go through the offering and cowherd anytime before the sale closeout on March 4. If you have any questions or would like to discuss any of the bulls or heifers in the offering, please feel free to give Stacey, Kylie or Mark Holowaychuk (OBI Livestock) a call.
On a final note, we would like to thank our customers who have supported our program over the years and those that have expressed interest in our genetics. Your trust in our program means a great deal and we hope to continue to be your first stop for your bull and heifer needs.
