We are delighted to welcome you to the 2018 Musical Theatre season presented by the Performing Arts department, Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University.

West Side Story, 2017 Front cover: West Side Story, 2017

Queensland Conservatorium presents more than 250 events throughout the year, to audiences in excess of 60,000.

Performing Arts at Queensland Conservatorium has established a reputation as a provider of quality productions that are coupled with high level learning outcomes for our students. As we embark on a new year, the Performing Arts department welcomes you with enthusiasm and excitement to some of the most spectacular performances produced by its students. As you browse through this year’s season brochure, we hope you’ll be inspired by a number of events across our students’ jam-packed program. The events this year include staged productions of Godspell, Little Women and Company; workshop productions of Carousel and Dogfight; singing concerts (in-house at our theatre in Woolloongabba and at St John’s Cathedral), a Winter Audition Workshop, Summer School and two interstate tours.

We’re also delighted to be joining the Queensland Pops Orchestra again for a musical theatre concert in QPAC. At the end of the year we will farewell our 3rd year students as they present their final showcase. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to introduce these talented young professionals interstate (in Melbourne and Sydney) and at home here in Brisbane. We look forward to welcoming you to our performances and events throughout the year, and to sharing our passion for the Performing Arts.

“It affects me deeply every time I see it performed”, said composer Richard Rodgers when naming Carousel as his personal favourite. With a score that gave us “If I Loved You”, “Mister Snow” and the soaring “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, Carousel is one of the great classics of musical theatre.

Company features a brilliantly brisk and energetic score containing many of Stephen Sondheim's best known songs. The strength of the piece lies in its vivid yet real characters, meaning impressive technical aspects aren't necessary to convey the story. It can be told as effectively with a cavalcade of automated set pieces as it can with a chair or two. Every audience member will see reflections of themselves in at least one of the characters onstage. 13
