Tallac Continuation School of South Lake Tahoe. Incline Village agent, Terry Barbery, established the Terry Barbery Scholarship Fund for deserving Sierra Nevada College students. The first disbursement of the scholarship is slated to be awarded in January of 2014. The $1000 dollar scholarship will be applied to the student’s tuition and financial needs for the semester. Barbery represented Sierra Nevada College as the buyer during the purchase of 1008 Tahoe Boulevard in 2012, which is being transformed into the Holman Arts & Media Center scheduled to open next month. Robert and Robin Holman asked Barbery to help broker the purchase of the property which now bears their name. “It was then that I decided I wanted to get involved with Sierra Nevada College. I really admired the Holmans’ contribution to the college, so I started the Terry Barbery Scholarship Fund. The opportunity to provide funding for deserving students that otherwise may not get a shot at an education is very rewarding. I am looking forward to 2014 and making more contributions to the scholarship as time goes on,” Barbery said. Future contributions from Barbery include five percent of his commission from every sale and fifteen percent of his earnings from clients with ties to Sierra Nevada College. “We deeply appreciate Terry Barbery’s philanthropic efforts with Sierra Nevada College. His commitment to the community and higher education is wonderful, and we look forward to working with him in the coming year,” Sierra Nevada College Vice President of Development, Dino Herndandez said. Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty South Lake Tahoe agent, Thane McCall, makes his contribution to education in Lake Tahoe this season with $50 dollar gift certificates to each of the 56 students at Mt. Tallac Continuation School. McCall also pays the students a personal visit at the high school and provides the students a party with homemade food. This is the second year of McCall’s donation to students of the school. Mt. Tallac Continuation School serves students with various circumstances that require more flexibility than available at conventional high schools. Mt Tallac Continuation School focuses on community building while helping students complete the credits needed in order to obtain a high school diploma.

“Sadly, Mt. Tallac Continuation School is often forgotten or thought of as a school of lesser quality, when in reality the work done there is vital to our community. I choose to donate in an attempt to recognize the efforts of this group of driven students,” McCall said. “As far as I know, Mr. McCall is the only community member to provide a donation of this type to any group of students in the district. I don't believe any person has walked into a school or class and asked, ‘May I give a gift directly to each of your students?’ The students asked Mr. McCall to come back to visit, and they meant it as if they felt his genuine respect, which for them is more important than any amount of money,” Resource Teacher for Lake Tahoe Unified School District Holly Greenough said. Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty is also accepting clothing donations for the Good Shepherd’s Clothes Closet, a Reno nonprofit that clothes the needy, through the beginning of the year. Visit www.gsccreno.org for a list of most needed donation items. Businesses and community members are invited to make donations at any Sierra Sotheby’s International Realty office location in Squaw Valley, Incline Village, Zephyr Cove, and South Lake Tahoe.
