welcome S
ince our last edition, we’ve had a new Prime Minister move into Number 10 Downing Street. We echo the Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce Shevaun Haviland’s congratulations to Andy Burnham on his appointment. We also support Shevaun’s pledge to “work with the new government to make the changes needed to deliver the economic growth we all need” and urge Mr Burnham to stand by his pledge for stability for UK businesses. We also have the Autumn Budget coming next month and I give further thoughts on this in our Policy Matters column on page 19. We continue to offer our own invaluable support to our members and the wider business community through our exclusive events and collaboration opportunities, which include our recent event in which we welcomed the Governor of the Bank of England Andrew Bailey to the county – again more on page 19. It was an absolute delight to see all our winners crowned at the Northamptonshire Business Awards at Sywell Aerodrome on 11th September. Northamptonshire is a county that shines brightly in business, with incredible innovation, terrific talent and spectacular service in droves. The celebrations were wonderful to be a part of, and I would like to personally congratulate all the winners and finalists. I hope everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening. You can see a full list of our winners with pictures on pages 14 and 15. Finally, and not forgetting our massively popular business exhibitions. Our Northamptonshire Business Exhibition on 24th September was a great success, and it was brilliant to see so many local businesses networking and showcasing their skills. We are looking forward to the same again at the MK Expo on Thursday 12th November. If you’d like to exhibit at the event, sign up soon, as stands are limited.

‘I want us to be at the forefront of something new and although we have done well, tomorrow is another day’ Robert Thompson, CEO, See Limited
Building a future based on sustainability and innovation Northants company See Limited is marking a decade in business with a commitment to ensure sustainability and innovation remain at the heart of its operations as it continues its growth plans
E
stablished in August 2016, See Limited – which stands for supporting ethical enterprise – is a group-holding company operating in the built environment industry specialising in the distribution and fabrication of wood veneer and decorative laminate panels. Reflecting on the company’s beginnings, See Limited’s CEO Robert Thompson said: “Back in 2016 we had an opportunity to create a group that was more influential but also more representative of what we wanted to stand for. “Ethics was at the heart of that. However, Supporting Ethical Enterprise was not just a
name. We wanted to establish something that represented who we were and, importantly, something that would remain true to those values for the long term.” Ten years on, See Limited is being recognised for championing sustainability and innovation which is reflected in the plethora of regional and national award wins. “The award wins have been fantastic at highlighting the work of the team in sustainability and innovation over the last decade,” continues Robert. “But one of the most significant milestones for us has to be the growing recognition of See Limited amongst our
customers, suppliers and industry peers. Ten years ago, people would ask, ‘who are See?’ but now we’re seen as an entity in our own right which, for me personally, is one of the nicest things.” As for the next ten years, See Limited’s ambition is to continue innovating, developing more sustainable solutions and investigating new ways to reduce waste and improve efficiency across its operations. Robert concluded: “I want us to be at the forefront of something new and although we have done well, tomorrow is another day. That mindset – to keep going, keep improving and keep moving forward – is what drives us.” OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2026 inbusiness 5

Curtain rises on seating project R
oyal & Derngate have launched a major fundraising campaign to support the refurbishment of the theatre’s Derngate auditorium. Having been awarded a substantial grant towards the project from Arts Council England’s Creative Foundations Fund, the Northampton venue needs to raise an additional £100K as part of its local contribution to the project. As announced in April, the ACE grant award of £538,000 is for the renewal of the seating, flooring and audio enhancement system in the Derngate auditorium. With work on the refurbishment due to take place in August 2027, the theatre is starting a year-long campaign to raise the additional funds needed to complete the project. Over the years, millions of audience members have taken their seats at Derngate, creating memories that have stayed with them long after the curtain fell. The years of use have taken their toll on the fabric of the auditorium, and, with the support of audiences, the local community and businesses, the refurbishment project will create a more comfortable, welcoming and inclusive experience for many years to come. Holly Gladwell, Acting CEO of Royal & Derngate, Northampton, commented: “We are delighted to have secured this vital funding from Arts Council England’s Creative Foundations Fund towards our refurbishment of Derngate auditorium. But we will need the support of our audiences and the local community to get the project over the line, with a target of £100K to raise. “Refreshing the Derngate auditorium with new seating and flooring, and an improved audio enhancement system, will help build our resilience and ensure we can deliver a theatre fit for the future while continuing to play a vital role in supporting the local economy and the wider cultural sector.”
The Derngate’s seating will all be renewed as part of the refurbishment
‘We will need the support of our audiences and the local community to get the project over the line, with a target of £100K to raise’ Customers can make a donation to the seat refurbishment appeal when purchasing their tickets, and people can also give directly to the campaign via the theatre’s website at www.royalandderngate.co.uk/individualgiving/derngate-second-act.
Businesses who are interested in supporting the refurbishment appeal through donations or by sponsorship can find out more about the opportunities available by emailing the theatre’s development team on development@royalandderngate.co.uk

The two-day event brought together freelance translators, interpreters, language service providers and academics from the UK and abroad to discuss client engagement, business growth and ethical practice in the profession. Councillor Paul Trendall, Mayor of Milton Keynes, attended the conference’s opening reception, where he spoke about the value the city places on language and translation in bringing communities together. Professional translators and interpreters remain essential to how businesses, institutions and communities communicate clearly and accurately with each other, and that value hasn’t diminished with the growth of AI translation tools – if anything, it’s become more important.” ITI is the UK’s largest body for professional translators and interpreters, representing the profession’s interests and standards for four decades. Home Instead East Northants is celebrating 16 years of helping local people remain independent at home – and of managing the hidden logistics behind dependable care. Since opening in 2010, the company has provided home care and live-in care across Kettering, Wellingborough, Rushden, North Bedfordshire, and surrounding villages. Every day, Home Instead’s care professionals travel between homes to support clients early in the morning, throughout the day, overnight, at weekends, and on bank holidays. It’s a true local 24/7/365 business. Behind each visit is a complex schedule. Coordinators must consider clients’ needs and preferred schedules, matching clients’ interests and care professionals experiences, likely journey times, and peak morning and evening demand. Snow, flooding, road closures, illness, or an urgent request can force plans to change, while
a missed visit could have serious consequences. Mark Darnell, owner of Home Instead East Northants, said: “Every client visit is important. I’m hugely grateful to our whole team for their dedication, which enables us to consistently deliver the compassionate care that all our clients deserve.” Home Instead East Northants builds dedicated care professional teams around each client, helping ensure that care is provided by familiar people who understand their routines, preferences, and personalities. Communication between coordinators, care professionals, clients, and families is equally important, enabling the team to respond quickly when circumstances change while protecting continuity of care. Sixteen years on, the objective remains the same: enabling people to live safely, confidently, and independently at home, and enjoy the quality of life that they deserve.

Coach helping people overcome heartache The founder of a coaching company that focuses on separation and divorce has shared the immense impact that such a huge life change can have on an individual. Breakup or divorce can often come with a number of practical challenges – finances, legal matters, or moving home. Less often discussed is the emotional impact.
‘Coaching provides a safe, non-judgemental space to process emotions, rediscover strengths, and take practical steps towards a brighter future’ Julie Weekes, Founder of Beyond The Break Coaching has shared how the end of a relationship can affect confidence, mental wellbeing, work performance, relationships, and even a person's sense of identity.
The Accredited Breakup and Divorce Coach Master Practitioner is well versed in supporting people through one of life's most challenging experiences. Julie said: “My aim is to help clients regain clarity, rebuild confidence, and move forward with renewed resilience and self-belief. “Many people going through separation are not only dealing with the end of a relationship, but also grief for the future they had imagined. They may be struggling with self-doubt, anxiety, or uncertainty about what comes next. “Coaching provides a safe, non-judgemental space to process emotions, rediscover strengths, and take practical steps towards a brighter future. “A breakup may be the end of one chapter, but it can also be the beginning of a stronger, more confident future.” Julie, an Associate Member of Resolution, works with individuals and organisations, supporting emotional wellbeing during relationship breakdowns and other major life transitions through Beyond The Break Coaching. Skilled staff aren’t always ready to lead Leadership development specialist Louise Harrison is encouraging organisations to invest in supporting newly promoted managers, warning that technical expertise alone doesn’t prepare people for leadership. After a career in leadership development at Jaguar Land Rover, Louise founded LUMA Leadership Development to help individuals step into leadership with confidence, clarity and practical capability. Louise said: “We often reward excellent technical performance with leadership responsibility, assuming leadership capability will naturally follow. Yet the skills that make someone successful in their current role are rarely the same skills needed to lead others.
“When new leaders struggle, the signs often show up elsewhere in the business. Decisions take longer, difficult conversations are avoided, delegation doesn’t happen, teams become overly dependent on one person, and confidence begins to dip. What looks like a performance issue is often a leadership capability gap. “The good news is that these behaviours can be developed when people receive the right support at the right time.” LUMA combines behavioural insight, coaching and practical application to help people translate learning into meaningful behaviour change in their day-to-day roles. The company’s first leadership development programmes achieved a Net Promoter Score of +100, with all delegates
reporting increased confidence, motivation and strategic thinking. Louise added: “For any organisation considering promoting someone into a leadership role, perhaps the most valuable question to ask isn’t, ‘Are they ready?’ but, ‘How will we help them succeed?’ “When capable people are supported to step up, everyone benefits – the individual, their team and the organisation as a whole.” LUMA Leadership Development is offering Northamptonshire Chamber members a 20% discount on leadership development programmes and Hogan assessments booked before 31 December. Survey gives real insight into how we’re performing By Louise Wall (pictured), CEO, Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce and Milton Keynes Chamber of Commerce
T
he Autumn Budget is looming and we wholeheartedly back the British Chambers of Commerce’s call for Chancellor, John Healey, to ‘Back Business, Cut Costs and Deliver Growth’ in his first Budget statement. We have seen first hand how much businesses need the fiscal breathing space to create jobs, invest and grow and fully support the BCC’s recommendations to cut employer National Insurance contributions for all under-25s, to help tackle the youth employment crisis, introduce a targeted tax reduction package to ease energy and business rate pressures for all firms and restore consistent, locally delivered export support to help more SMEs trade globally and drive growth.
‘I cannot stress the importance of completing the survey. Just a couple of minutes of your time helps us to form a picture of our local economy’
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey met with local businesses recently
The Budget statement is expected on 28th October and we hope the Chancellor will do as much as possible to reduce costs for businesses. We recently met with the Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey who was visiting Northamptonshire to meet with key business leaders from Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes in a very engaging round table conversation. Our members also took part in the discussion, which covered current trading conditions that businesses are facing. The mood among UK businesses in mid-2026 is one of cautious resilience rather than confidence. Many companies report that trading remains stable or is improving slightly, but they are reluctant to invest or recruit because they see a number of structural challenges affecting the wider economy. Recent business surveys consistently show that economic uncertainty is the single biggest concern, followed by costs, skills and weak demand. Look out for more engagement with the Bank of England as we go forward as the
Chamber is leading the way with engagement in our region. The concerns raised by our members echo those of our Quarterly Economic Survey. Whilst business is relatively stable, the future is somewhat uncertain for growth, but with the right support and investment we hope to see things improve over the next 18 months. If you aren’t familiar with our Quarterly Economic Survey (QES), please take a minute to read the reports on our websites which highlight the key challenges and concerns business leaders are facing locally. You can find the reports under the Policy section of the website. You too can also take part in responding to the QES, which is key for our local economy across Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes. I cannot stress the importance of completing the survey. Just a couple of minutes of your time helps us to form a picture of our local economy and how we are performing but also contributes to the largest business survey in the UK’s business eco system. Tool will help manage HR issues hireful, the recruitment software company based near Wellingborough, has launched clearCase, a new tool built to help HR teams manage workplace issues properly instead of chasing them across email and shared drives. To mark the launch, hireful is giving local businesses a better deal than anyone else gets: 50% off the first year, double the standard launch offer, for the first 50 qualifying businesses based in Northamptonshire or Milton Keynes. hireful has been building HR and recruitment software from its Northamptonshire base for over two decades. More than 600 HR teams already use its software. clearCase is the newest product from clearHR, hireful’s sister brand, set up to build software for HR problems other tools ignore or overcomplicate. Workplace conflict is common, and it’s getting harder to manage safely. 44% of workers experienced some form of conflict at work in the last year, according to Acas, and employment tribunal claims are up 39% year on year, with a backlog of 531,000 cases still waiting to be heard (Ministry of Justice, 2025/26). Acas research also suggests that resolving an issue formally costs around three

Even so, plenty of HR teams are still keeping track of employee relations cases, from a first informal chat through to a formal grievance, in email and Word documents. clearCase gives HR teams one secure place to log a case and work through a policy-aware, step-by-step process. It generates paperwork as it goes, and flags risk as a case develops. It also keeps a tamper-evident audit log of what happened and when, so if a case ends up in front of a tribunal or external investigator, a full case pack and timeline are ready at short notice. The

AI in clearCase helps with guidance and drafting, referenced back to the organisation’s own policies. It doesn’t make decisions. People do. The Employment Rights Act 2025 adds to the pressure. It brings a six-year recordkeeping duty and a new Fair Work Agency, plus, from October 2026, tighter rules on preventing harassment, including by third parties. From January 2027, day-one unfair dismissal protection and a ban on fire-andrehire follow. Employers who can show a clear, consistent process, and prove it, will be in a much stronger position than those relying on a Word document buried in someone's inbox. Under hireful’s standard launch offer, the first 50 new clearCase customers get 25% off their first year on a two-year term, with year two at full list price. For this launch, hireful is doubling that for its own backyard: the first 50 qualifying businesses based in Northamptonshire or Milton Keynes get 50% off year one instead, on the same two-year term. Businesses that want to find out more, or check whether they qualify for the local offer, can get in touch with the clearHR team at clearhr.co.uk
Connectivity key for new attraction Local communications giant dbfb has said that the success of the new Universal Studios site planned in Bedford relies upon connectivity. goingglobal Expert advice, guidance and updates from the world of international trade
Y
usen Logistics has officially opened its new European regional headquarters, Yusen Logistics Global Management (Europe) N.V. (YLGM-EUR), in Antwerp, reinforcing the company’s longterm commitment to the European market and establishing a central base in one of Europe’s leading logistics hubs. The new headquarters serves as the nerve centre of Yusen Logistics’ European operations, housing approximately 140 employees and supporting the company’s continued growth across the continent. The relocation of the regional head office from Schiphol (Amsterdam) to Antwerp reflects Yusen Logistics’ long-term vision for Europe and the strategic value of positioning the organisation at the heart of a major logistics ecosystem. Located at the centre of one of Europe’s most important logistics corridors, Antwerp offers outstanding connectivity via road, rail, inland waterways, and maritime routes. The presence of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges – one of Europe’s largest and most strategically vital ports – further strengthens the city’s role as a gateway to international trade.
‘The new headquarters will play an important role in the future development of our European organisation’ The choice of Antwerp also holds special significance for the broader NYK Group, to which Yusen Logistics belongs. Several NYK Group companies, including NYK Bulkship (Atlantic) NV, and International Car Operators N.V. (ICO), are already wellestablished in the Port of Antwerp. By bringing Yusen Logistics’ European headquarters into proximity with these sister companies, the Group aims to enhance internal collaboration and strengthen integrated logistics solutions. Closer connections with these affiliated businesses will enable more seamless service offerings to customers and capitalise on Antwerp’s robust logistics infrastructure for greater efficiency across global supply chains. Yusen Logistics marked the opening of the new regional headquarters with an official ceremony in Antwerp, attended by representatives of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, customers, business partners and employees. 22 inbusiness OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2026

On track to deliver first class service to travellers Sophie Paoloni, Sales & Partnerships Manager at London Northwestern Railway, says major investment has boosted its passenger experience
A
staggering 2.8 million passengers used Northampton train station last year, making it one of WM Trains Limited’s busiest stations in the UK for footfall. With its central location and excellent links across the UK to the nation’s biggest cities, including London and Birmingham, it is little wonder that Northampton is the choice of many commuters and leisure seekers who are opting for speedy journeys in comfort. Add to that the new impressive Class 730/2 electric train fleet, which was launched in June last year as part of London Northwestern Railway’s £1 billion railway train and infrastructure investment programme, and travellers are now experiencing dramatically improved levels of luxury and style. Key features of the state-of-the-art trains include underfloor heating and smart aircon systems that adapt to carriage conditions in real time, plug sockets, USB charging points, and tables at every seat and spacious, visible storage racks so luggage is never left behind. Sales and Partnership Manager Sophie Paoloni said: “Our Class 730/2 fleet has revolutionised our passengers’ travel experience. The fleet was gradually introduced to the route between Northampton and London Euston before entering service on our Trent Valley Line between Crewe and Euston in December 2025, serving destinations including Milton Keynes, Rugby and Lichfield. “Just over a year on, the rollout is now complete and has led to double-digit increases in customer satisfaction for those travelling via Milton Keynes and Northampton, with passengers quick to praise the trains’ spacious interiors.” The rollout has increased capacity by 42,000 extra seats on busy commuter and leisure routes, with Northampton being one of the stations to benefit from the new sleek and spacious carriages.
“Our new Class 730/2 fleet is very modern,” added Sophie. “The trains are packed with features to make every journey smoother and more comfortable. Some of the benefits include power at every seat, lots of space to work and relax, improved access, more storage, space for wheelchair users, toilets and free Wi-Fi.” This makes the fleet perfect for commuters, which is supported by the operater’s corporate travel platform Just Business. Customers can also use tools on the platform to report on carbon savings, aligning with many companies’ ongoing ESG goals. “All of our new trains are fully electric, said Sophie. “Helping reduce emissions and making it easier for residents to choose low-carbon ways to travel without compromising on comfort and convenience. “As we move into a more sustainable world, rail is one of the lowest-carbon forms of transport that you can use.” It is also a popular transport choice for students who are possibly unable to drive or who are studying at city universities with limited parking options and congested roads. Hence WM Trains Limited’s Student Season Passes which have been available all summer, ready for purchase in time for the beginning of the Autumn term. These offer students aged 16 or over a massive 50% discount off term-time travel. Sophie said: “We often attend University and College Open Days to promote this to students across our network and August/September is a busy time for us as students prepare for going back to class. “There are also a variety of products on offer across both railways including Advance Fares, Season Tickets and Anytime or Off-Peak tickets. We have recently
launched our Group Travel product, offering groups of 10 or more the opportunity to save up to 26%. This is available for tour groups, corporate groups attending conference and exhibitions, touring theatre companies, sports clubs and more. “Group Travel has been a popular new addition, and I am excited to explore this further and work with more tour operators, attractions, hotels and events venues to promote the offer.” WM Trains Limited was incorporated in December 2017, operating passenger services under West Midlands Railway and London Northwestern Railway. The company boasts more than 3,000 employees at WM Trains Limited including train drivers, conductors, engineers, and the Head Office team. The London Northwestern Railway network includes routes between Liverpool and London, with West Midlands Railway covering more local routes around the Midlands.

This year, the operator has also opened five new railway stations; Willenhall and Darlaston in March 2026 and Moseley Village, Kings Heath and Pineapple Road in April 2026 as part of a £185 million investment to improve rail connectivity across the West Midlands, helping to connect communities, reduce road congestion and support economic growth. Since February 2026, WM Trains Limited has been operated by DfT Operator Ltd following its transfer into public ownership. Currently the operator manages more than 150 stations across the country, providing excellent connectivity, offering services to many key destinations including Northampton and Milton Keynes without the need to drive. Sophie, who spent 10 years working in the hospitality industry before beginning a career in rail, said: “It is amazing to work for a company investing money into new trains and stations, leading to service and customer satisfaction improvements. “I am very lucky to have inherited some fantastic partnerships which I look forward to developing over the next year, whilst seeking additional opportunities with attractions and businesses across our network.” Joining the Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce has been one way that WM Trains Limited has created new opportunities for the team, allowing them to reach more local businesses and extend their network in the Midlands. Tidal Blue, founded by Danny Welch and Colin Macgregor, has been created to support founders and business owners through the oftenoverlooked strategic and personal challenges that come with start-ups, scaling a company and preparing for future investment or sale opportunities. “Having gone through a rigorous growth and sale

Tidal Blue focuses on helping businesses prepare for growth, investment and long-term strategic planning, without becoming involved in day-today operational delivery. “Business ownership can be incredibly lonely,” Danny said. “Having advisors who have actually done it matters because we can talk from genuine experience. We understand the pressure, the uncertainty and the emotional side of the journey. issuespotlight: logistics, freight & transportation Freight Action Plan will focus on practical solutions West Northamptonshire is one of the UK’s most important logistics locations. Freight and warehousing support thousands of local jobs, attract investment and keep everyday goods moving across the regional and national economy. But freight also needs to be planned properly, so that communities, villages, road assets and the environment are protected from avoidable impacts. West Northamptonshire Council is currently developing a Freight Action Plan, intended to guide how goods move within, through and beyond the area. The Northamptonshire Logistics Industry Forum, known as NLIF, welcomes this work and is keen to support the Council with practical evidence from operators, employers and industry partners. Convened by the University of Northampton, NLIF is a county-wide forum bringing together logistics businesses, public-sector partners, education providers and industry bodies to support the future of logistics in Northamptonshire. Its Chair, Clare Bottle, CEO of the UK Warehousing Association, says the Freight Action Plan should treat freight not as a nuisance to be displaced, but as an essential activity requiring clear routeing, suitable infrastructure, driver facilities, workforce access and decarbonisation support. NLIF is encouraging the Plan to focus on practical outputs, including an updated freight map, better HGV parking and driver welfare provision, freight EV charging and grid capacity, realistic access to logistics jobs, and stronger partnership between the Council and industry. The next NLIF meeting will take place on 30 September at Europa Worldwide Group in Corby, where members will discuss the Freight Action Plan and how the sector can support its development. Flexible spaces are key to evolution of logistics
A
s logistics, freight and transportation businesses continue to evolve, the need for flexible operational space has never been greater, according to the manufacturer of aluminium-framed buildings. Lauralu UK & Ireland designs, manufactures and installs temporary and permanent aluminium-framed buildings for customers across logistics, warehousing, manufacturing, ports and airports. Their structures support a wide range of applications, including warehousing, loading and dispatch areas, vehicle maintenance facilities, production space and secure storage.
Lauralu’s Paul Ellwood said: “Growth in e-commerce, changing supply chain demands and seasonal fluctuations mean organisations require additional capacity without the cost or delays associated with traditional construction. “A key advantage of these modern building solutions is the speed at which they can be installed, enabling businesses to respond quickly to increased demand, seasonal peaks or operational change while minimising disruption. Structures can be fully insulated, fitted with loading doors, lighting, heating and ventilation, and designed to meet specific operational requirements, making them suitable for both short and long-term use.”

Buildings must offer long-term energy efficiency
A
s energy costs continue to rise and sustainability becomes an increasing priority, businesses are looking beyond simple cost savings towards long-term efficiency. Today’s commercial buildings are becoming smarter, more connected and more energy efficient. NRG UK Group Limited has seen a significant shift in customer demand. While LED lighting upgrades remain one of the quickest ways to reduce energy consumption, businesses are increasingly looking for complete energy solutions, including solar PV, battery storage, EV charging and energy monitoring. A spokesperson said: “Every building has different requirements. Whether it’s a warehouse, school, manufacturing facility or office, the best results come from understanding how a building operates before recommending the right solution. “Energy monitoring is often overlooked, yet businesses can’t improve what they can’t measure. Access to accurate energy data helps identify inefficiencies, supports investment decisions and ensures improvements continue to deliver long after installation.” Whether it’s a refurbishment, redevelopment or a simple upgrade, investing in modern, energy-efficient technologies can reduce operating costs, improve safety and create more sustainable workplaces.
A groundworks company which has recently celebrated its third anniversary has taken time to reflect on its achievements in such a short time. Founded in May 2023 by Brian Kelly, Carl Briggs and Richard Briggs, Hawk Drainage and Groundworks has quickly established itself as a name to watch among Northampton’s growing local contractors. The company specialises in drainage and groundworks for residential, commercial and civil projects, covering everything from excavation and site preparation to drainage installation and repair. Director Carl Briggs (pictured) said: “What began as a shared ambition between three partners has grown into a business built on hard graft, technical knowhow and a commitment to doing it right by the communities it serves. Beyond the sites it works
on, Hawk Drainage and Groundworks has made a point of investing in Northampton itself, including supporting and volunteering for the McCarthy Dixon Foundation. We also take pride in sponsoring the NCCC ladies team and Northampton Town FC along with a host of grass roots sports teams.”
‘For a business barely three years old, we are a company thinking well beyond its next contract’ Over the past three years, the team has grown from a trio to a workforce of 15, all working to the same standard the founders set from day one: getting the fundamentals right and delivering the best for the customers. Among its notable projects to date, the company has delivered large drainage works to Mendip Park to help with flooding for the parish council, and carried out patch and liner repairs for clients large and small. Carl added: “For a business barely three years old, we are a company thinking well beyond its next contract. As Northampton’s construction and infrastructure sector continues to expand, Hawk Drainage and Groundworks looks set to remain firmly part of the conversation.”
Finding a partner for construction projects
Scott Edwards
A former commercial manager has launched a new consultancy to help growing organisations to plan and deliver construction projects. Scott Edwards, who previously worked for the UK’s Leading Master Developer, Urban&Civic, has set up BuildAlliance, which partners with businesses to take on building projects for organisations, managing everything from turning the first ideas into a winning brief, to the feasibility of the scheme, and navigating planning, procurement, delivery and handover. Scott has spent more than a decade in strategic land and development, working across several of the country’s newest, biggest towns and communities delivering housing, community buildings, offices, shops, cafes and nurseries. He said: “As businesses grow and take on new premises, they find themselves managing
architects, designers, stakeholders and contractors having possibly never done so before – or without the headspace to do so. “By working with BuildAlliance, businesses have a strategic partner from first idea to handover to take on the day-to-day and translate construction jargon and process so that clients never become overwhelmed.” Scott added: “The timing for this feels right. Andy Burnham is on a drive to de-centralise investment from Westminster and we’re on a drive to give SMEs the power to build out their own destiny.” In its first year BuildAlliance is already managing a portfolio of projects in excess of £50m. BuildAlliance is set up to manage projects in a range of sectors with values from £0.5m to £25m and more. OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2026 inbusiness 31

It’s never too early to review plans for capital expenditure Businesses planning to invest in equipment, vehicles or machinery over the next year could benefit from reviewing their capital expenditure needs as early as possible, according to Dynamic Commercial Finance. For many firms, investment decisions are still made on a case-by-case basis, often when a new contract is won, equipment needs replacing or extra capacity is required. But taking a more strategic view of likely annual spending can help businesses prepare funding in advance and respond more quickly when opportunities arise. One option is to arrange an asset finance line based on expected annual capital expenditure. This can give a business access to pre-agreed funding, reducing the need to negotiate a new facility for every individual purchase. It can also help lower the overall cost of borrowing. Where funding is structured around the line rather than priced separately for each asset, businesses may be able to secure more competitive terms across multiple purchases. As well as improving flexibility, early planning can support better cashflow management by allowing firms to spread the cost of investment while preserving working capital for dayto-day operations. A spokesperson for Dynamic Commercial Finance said: “When businesses take time to map out likely investment for the year ahead, they are often in a stronger position to secure funding that supports growth and gives them room to act quickly.”

Technical skills are key to Northamptonshire’s growth Tresham College Principal Dr Robin Webber (pictured) says elevating the status of technical education is great for students as well as business
T
he Prime Minister’s commitment to giving technical education the same status as academic routes is welcome news for employers, students and the wider economy. Across Northamptonshire, businesses consistently tell us they need people with the right practical skills. Whether in logistics, construction, engineering, manufacturing, digital industries or professional services, employers are looking for individuals who can contribute from day one and continue developing throughout their careers. Technical education, for many, is the best route into a successful and rewarding career. At Tresham College, part of The Bedford College Group, we have long championed this approach. Our focus is on helping students and apprentices gain the skills, knowledge and experience employers need, while supporting businesses to build strong and capable workforces.
A particularly positive aspect of the government's reforms is the continued emphasis on closer collaboration between colleges and employers. We know from recent Local Skills Improvement Plans and North Northants Big50, businesses understand the skills their sectors require, and their involvement helps ensure training reflects real workplace needs.
‘Our Apprenticeship Recruitment Team help make the process straightforward and effective’ This is already a key part of our work. Employers help shape our programmes across a wide range of vocational and professional subjects, giving students, apprentices and T Level learners valuable insight into the workplace whilst at the same time helping businesses develop their future talent pipeline.
Apprenticeships are a crucial part of technical education
34 inbusiness OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2026
As Northamptonshire continues to grow and attract investment, this partnership becomes even more important. Businesses don’t just
need talent today, but a steady intake of skilled people for the future. Apprenticeships play a vital role in meeting this challenge. They offer employers a practical way to recruit, train and retain talent, while providing individuals with valuable opportunities to learn and progress in their careers. At Tresham College, we work closely with employers across the county to support every stage of the apprenticeship journey, from selecting the right programme and identifying candidates to navigating funding opportunities. Our Apprenticeship Recruitment Team help make the process straightforward and effective. Modern apprenticeships now cover a wide range of professions, including construction, engineering, business administration, accounting, customer service and human resources. Looking ahead, Northamptonshire has a real opportunity to benefit from a stronger technical skills focus. By continuing to strengthen partnerships between education and industry, we can ensure technical education is recognised as a first-choice pathway, giving businesses access to the skilled workforce they need and helping local communities thrive.

onstruction companies are increasingly in the sights of cyber criminals, with the sector’s growing reliance on digital technology creating new opportunities for attack, according to East Midlands Cyber Resilience Centre. From cloud-based project management platforms and Building Information Modelling (BIM) to connected machinery and mobile devices, the modern construction industry stores vast amounts of valuable commercial and financial data. East Midlands Cyber Resilience Centre’s Director Colin Ellis said: “The sector is particularly attractive because projects often involve multiple contractors, suppliers and consultants sharing sensitive information across different systems. Verizon’s construction industry analysis also found that 95% of incidents involved external attackers, with web application attacks, social engineering and malware among the most common threats. Helping business put something back Northamptonshire Community Foundation’s Philanthropy Advice Service has seen growing interest in giving that is local, visible and lasting. More people are looking for advice on charitable giving, asking how to give well, give wisely and see their generosity’s impact close to home. Recent research by Barclays Modern Philanthropist Report shows that professional advisers don’t always have the specialist knowledge, local insight or charitable infrastructure needed to support those conversations with confidence. As Northamptonshire’s leading grantmaking charity, the foundation has awarded more than £25 million in grants to local charities and community groups since 2001, building a unique understanding of the county’s needs and the organisations delivering real change on the ground. A spokesperson said: “We believe generous giving should be simple, meaningful and rooted in the communities it serves. Mentoring scheme urges more people to volunteer time Goal 17, a UK social impact organisation, has launched a new recruitment drive for volunteer mentors in Northampton, building on two years of life-changing results in the area. The scheme, delivered in partnership with Northamptonshire Children’s Trust, matches trained volunteers with young people who have recently left the care system. Many care leavers have spent their childhood moved between placements before being discharged at 18 with little support or guidance. As a result, they are among the most disadvantaged groups in the country, far more likely than their peers to experience homelessness or imprisonment. Goal 17’s data shows that a single, consistent adult presence can dramatically improve outcomes for care leavers, helping them build confidence, set goals and adjust to independent living. Volunteers receive full, universitycertified training and the time commitment is usually just a couple of hours a month. Goal 17 CEO and founder Francesca Salussolia said “Every one of our care leavers deserves someone in their corner – not a service, not a system, just a person who shows up. It takes as little as two hours a month, but the impact lasts a lifetime. If you’ve ever wanted to make a genuine difference to someone’s life, this is it.” Those interested in volunteering, or who know someone who might be, are encouraged to visit goal17.global/volunteer or email team@goal17.global to find out more and sign up.

Charity calls on support as it comes in to land at new base T o continue delivering emergency care to patients in critical situations, The Air Ambulance Service has launched an appeal urging the public to support a new base in the Midlands. The Air Ambulance Service charity operates helicopter emergency medical services under the name “Your Local Air Ambulance” covering Warwickshire and Northamptonshire from Coventry Airport and covering Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland from Nottingham Heliport. It also operates the “National Children’s Air Ambulance”, a one-of-a-kind dedicated helicopter transfer service that has taken more than 1,200 critically ill babies and children to
hospitals where they can receive the best care. The new base is planned for outside Catthorpe, near the border between Warwickshire, Leicestershire and Northampton. The Air Ambulance Service Chief Executive Officer Peta Wilkinson explained: “Until now we have always needed to use rented premises for our helicopters and rapid response vehicles, but this is no longer sustainable. We urgently need a permanent base that is owned by the charity so that we can secure our future and continue to provide care in the air in the fastest time possible. “This site in Catthorpe is perfect as it lies at the centre of the three counties, with superb access to the M1 and M6. member profile Richard Davies Company: David Roberts & Partners Group Job title: Regional Development Director (Midlands & South) What does your organisation do? DR&P Group is an independent insurance and risk management business, providing tailored insurance, employee benefits and advisory services. We help organisations protect their people, assets and future ambitions through expert advice and local relationships backed by national strength. How did it all start? Just as I was deciding whether to go to university, my mum was diagnosed with terminal cancer. I chose to stay at home to support my family and started work instead, a decision that shaped my career and taught me the value of resilience, responsibility and making the most of every opportunity. What’s your greatest achievement so far? My greatest achievement is my son. Watching him grow into his own person, develop his character and pursue his ambitions gives me more pride than any professional success ever could. What keeps you awake at night? Nothing, thankfully. I pack a lot into each day, so by the time my head hits the pillow, I sleep very well, and I’ve learned that worrying at 2am rarely solves tomorrow’s problems. What has surprised you most in your job? What has surprised me most is the sheer variety the role offers. It’s been an amazing nine months at DR&P, and the opportunity to work with different businesses, challenges and people means no two days are ever the same. What’s the biggest risk you’ve ever taken – and did it work out? Changing employer and career direction on my 52nd birthday was probably the biggest professional risk I’ve taken. Nine months later, I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made; it’s been an exciting challenge 44 inbusiness OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2026
and a reminder that it’s never too late to embrace new opportunities. What advice would you give to someone starting out? Don’t worry if your career doesn’t follow the plan you originally had in mind. Work hard, stay curious, build good relationships and say yes to opportunities because some of the best career moves come from paths you never expected to take.
although some need to remain confidential for now. Alongside recruiting great new talent and helping our people develop and fulfil their potential, I’m hopeful we'll see further M&A activity over the next 12 months. On a personal note, I’m also looking forward to speaking at an International Men’s Day event on 19 November.
Which business person do you most admire? Tom Kerridge. As a bit of a foodie, I’ve always admired what he’s achieved. He’s built an incredibly successful business through hard work, resilience and authenticity, while remaining refreshingly honest about the challenges he’s faced both personally and professionally.
What made your organisation join Northamptonshire Chamber and how are you making use of your membership? Northamptonshire is incredibly important to me because I was born here, live here and have built my career here. Joining the Chamber was a natural fit for DR&P, and as a Non-Executive Director and active member, I’m proud to support local businesses, foster connections and help champion economic growth across the county.
