Teen Leader Honorees Dalia Albert Dalia has been very active in the KMS community since moving here with her family from the Detroit area in 2014. Dalia has applied her leadership skills in KMS through her active involvement in Shabbat morning youth groups, where she has served as a group leader for several years, and in Bnei Akiva, where she has served as a rosh kvutzah and madricha. Outside of KMS, Dalia is involved in a wide range of chesed activities. She is very active in the Chai Lifeline organization, currently serving on its Student Executive Board. She has been featured in national Chai Lifeline publications for her unique and innovative outreach and programming and will serve as a camp counselor at Camp Simcha this summer. She also is active in Bikur Cholim, Student Council, and is a leader and mentor for Mid-Atlantic NCSY. Next year, Dalia will study at Midreshet Moriah and then continue her education at Binghamton University, pursuing a course of study in health sciences. Dalia cherishes the skills KMS has given her and hopes to use them to grow in her future endeavors.
Yonatan Cohen As an active member of KMS Youth, Yonatan has taken on many leadership roles in the community over the years. During his years at KMS, he went from being a Kiddush “busboy” to heading the Youth Kiddush Committee and from attending the Purim Carnival to helping run it (sticking kids to the Velcro wall was his favorite part). Yonatan is an active participant in the Youth Minyan as a regular layner, chazzan, and magbia. He also served as Bnei Akiva madrich for second graders. Separate from the Youth Minyan, Yonatan is grateful to KMS and Rabbi Levitt for offering inspiring youth programming from which he was able to benefit, such as the Leadership Initiative seminars with Dr. Erica Brown.
hen Yonatan is not practicing his layning for the upcoming Shabbat, W he takes classes at Montgomery College, having completed his studies at Berman Hebrew Academy. He is also a Tikvah scholar, through which he has participated in seminars about Judaic philosophy as applied to subjects such as the economy and medicine. Yonatan is excited to continue his religious growth next year in the Old City of Jerusalem at Aish Gesher and then study at the University of Maryland, where he plans to major in Economics.
Shuli Frenkel Shuli, a senior at Berman Hebrew Academy, has been an active participant in KMS Youth since moving to Kemp Mill from Washington, DC. Over the last several years, Shuli has organized divrei torah for the Youth Minyan, served on the KMS Youth Board, and has been a Bnei Akiva madricha for 5th and 6th graders. She loves participating in Simchat Torah dancing, Shavuot night events, and the Ruach Minyan. Outside of KMS, Shuli enjoys participating in Mock Trial, acting in Berman Hebrew Academy plays, and singing. She also participates in the Jewish Community Relations Council’s interfaith dialogue program and interns for the Jewish Coalition Against Domestic Abuse (JCADA). Shuli enjoys spending time with her younger siblings, Nava, Mayer, and Micah, and is grateful that she could spend more time with them this past year. After working at Camp Stone this summer, Shuli will continue to pursue her love of learning next year at Midreshet Lindenbaum. Shuli will then continue her education at the University of Maryland, Honors College, bringing her happiness and love for Judaism everywhere she goes.
Talya Lebson Talya is a senior at Berman Hebrew Academy. She has been a member of KMS almost her entire life (since age 2). During this time, Talya has been a leader in KMS Shabbat morning youth groups and has served as a Bnei Akiva madricha. This year, she
had the opportunity to serve as one of the roshei snif for Bnei Akiva of Silver Spring. This involved thinking of new, creative ways of organizing snif while still being COVID-safe, planning activities for the chanichim, and helping with drive-through pickups of treats and activities for kids before holidays. Talya loves being part of the KMS community, where she has observed that everyone has the opportunity to learn and grow in Judaism in their own way. She also enjoys the strong sense of community, where everyone cares for one another. Talya will be attending Midreshet Lindenbaum next year and then will continue her studies at the University of Maryland. She will miss being a part of KMS next year.
Brianna Loshin Brianna, born in Silver Spring, has been involved in KMS for as long as she can remember. As a young child, she attended Shabbat morning youth groups and always loved it, looking forward to the day that she could lead groups herself. Brianna became a group leader when she was in 8th grade and continued to work with the 4-5 year-old group for five years, eventually becoming the primary leader of that group. During this past year (Brianna’s 6th!) when COVID hit, she helped run Sunday morning groups on Zoom and then was thrilled to be able to meet the kids in person each Shabbat morning for Groups on the Grass. Brianna is grateful to have grown up in such an amazing community and is thankful to be honored by KMS. Aside from Shabbat groups, Brianna, who hopes to become a marine biologist, is studying biology at the University of Maryland and works at the National Aquarium in Baltimore on Sunday mornings. Brianna was lucky enough to be home this semester and continue leading Groups on the Grass. She will be moving to campus in the fall, but is very excited to come back to visit the kids again!
Gabi Loshin Gabi was born in Silver Spring and has been attending KMS since she was a young child. She fondly recalls participating in KMS Shabbat morning groups and waiting for the day that she would be old enough to be a group leader. In the summer before 8th grade, Gabi became a group leader for the youngest age group, playing with the children and helping out with circle time. By the end of 10th grade, she took over as the primary leader of that group. When the pandemic hit, Gabi continued working in KMS groups on Zoom on Friday afternoons and, for the past year, has been meeting with KMS kids each week in person, running Groups on the Grass for preschoolers with her sisters, Brianna and Emma. Gabi loves being a group leader, watching younger children grow and learn, and playing with them each week even after groups time is over. Gabi recently graduated from the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School. Next year, Gabi will be spending a gap year learning at Midreshet Emunah V’Omanut in Jerusalem. When Gabi returns, she will be attending college at the University of Maryland. While she excitedly awaits her שנה בארץ, she has been working as a 2nd grade assistant teacher at the Berman Hebrew Academy. Gabi has learned so much from her time at KMS. She appreciates the loving KMS community that has helped guide her through her years and looks forward to continuing her connection in the years to come.
Benny Margulies Benny has been an active member of KMS since moving to Silver Spring with his family in 2009. Since his 2015 bar mitzvah, he has stayed active in the Youth Minyan, offering to daven and layn, and later taking on leadership roles as the gabbai of the Friday night Ruach Minyan and eventually the Shabbat morning Youth Minyan. Benny has also been active in Bnei Akiva, serving as a madrich for snif. In 2019, Benny attended the Bnei Akiva Leadership program in Israel before spending the summer on MachHach Ba’aretz. He credits his summers at Camp Stone for his commitment to Bnei Akiva and youth leadership.
Benny is grateful that KMS provided him wonderful opportunities for growth and leadership in tefillah, and to have been able to grow up in a shul where his grandparents are also devoted members. Aside from his leadership at KMS, Benny is currently a graduating senior at Berman Hebrew Academy where he serves as gabbai rishon at the daily minyan. Benny also stays active as a member of the Cross Country and Track teams and formerly played on the JV Basketball team. After spending time as a counselor at Camp Stone this summer, Benny looks forward to continuing his Jewish education at Yeshivat Hakotel in the Old City of Jerusalem, and then at Yeshiva University in New York.
Shai Margulies Although Shai moved to Silver Spring when he was 6 years old, he was already familiar with KMS as his “grandparents’ shul,” which he would attend when he visited them. Since joining the shul with his parents, Shai has contributed to KMS Youth as an active member of the Youth Minyan, who could be called on (usually by his brother) to leyn when needed. Shai has also served as a Shabbat morning groups leader and as a Bnei Akiva madrich, most recently serving as Rosh Snif. In 2019, Shai attended the Bnei Akiva Leadership program in Israel before spending the summer on MachHach Ba’aretz. Shai says his leadership role models are the counselors he had during his many summers at Camp Stone, who helped him solidify his commitment to Bnei Akiva and working with the youth of the community. He is grateful to the KMS community for affording him opportunities for leadership and giving back. Aside from his leadership at KMS, Shai is currently a graduating senior at Berman Hebrew Academy, where he has been a very active Student Council leader throughout high school, as well as a member of the school’s Mock Trial, Debate, Volleyball, Soccer, Cross Country and Track teams. After following his role models and serving as a counselor at Camp Stone this summer, Shai looks forward to continuing his Jewish education at Yeshivat Orayta in the Old City of Jerusalem, and then attending the University of Maryland in College Park.
Ari Siegel Ari has been involved in the KMS community for his entire life. Since his bar mitzvah, he has served as a gabbai for several different minyanim throughout the shul including the Youth Minyan, where he frequently contributed through his layning and davening. Ari has also served on the Holocaust Committee and ran a youth parsha learning initiative during the summer of 2020 to help keep teens engaged in learning Torah despite the absence of camps that year. KMS has helped enable Ari to develop crucial leadership and organizational skills while teaching him how to be a contributing member of a Jewish community. Outside of KMS, Ari is a senior at Berman Hebrew Academy and has five older siblings who have all been great role models for him. He is excited to be spending next year in Israel at Yeshivat Hakotel to continue his Jewish growth.
Tekoa Sultan-Reisler Tekoa, a Kemp Mill native, was named at KMS and celebrated her Bat Mitzvah there. Growing up, she attended KMS Shabbat morning groups, Bnei Akiva, and Youth Minyan. Over the years, Tekoa has given divrei torah at Youth Minyan, layned at the Women’s Tefillah Group, and sung at the KMS banquet. Tekoa took on the role of madricha for Bnei Akiva and eventually became Rosh Snif. During an especially challenging year, Tekoa worked closely with her co-Roshim and the Vaad Horim to coordinate outdoor Shabbat snifim. Additionally, she helped run Bnei Akiva holiday-themed grab ’n go events, in partnership with KMS Youth, and the annual aravot sale. Outside of KMS, Tekoa, a graduating senior at Berman Hebrew Academy, is a captain of the Model UN team and a group leader in the JCRC Student-to-Student program. You can often find Tekoa playing the piano at home or skating at the Wheaton Ice Arena. Tekoa is excited to be attending Midreshet Lindenbaum next year and the University of Maryland afterward. Tekoa appreciates the valuable leadership opportunities and Jewish foundation that KMS has provided her.
Rabbi’s Message
It is wonderful to be able to pause and express gratitude to Hashem and to our fellow friends and neighbors for sustaining us through these very difficult fifteen months of COVID. Although for a time our shul building was shut down and our minyanim were temporarily suspended and that was incredibly painful, I can very proudly say that our shul never “shut down.” So many aspects of our shul life continued to function and even to flourish amidst the pandemic. Baruch Hashem, we found ways to stand by each other and stick together. People stepped forward to help and people pushed themselves to stay actively engaged. People were able to think creatively about how we could run shiurim and social programs and lectures and Scholars in Residence and Chessed activities over Zoom. We navigated our way (and are still doing so…) as best we could on how to safely begin minyanim, shiurim, and some of the activities we so longed for. People opened themselves up to new possibilities. People stepped forward to volunteer, to help, to participate and to create a vibrancy that none of us could have even imagined or anticipated. It is still a work in progress, as shul always is, but we hope we are generally moving in the right direction. While all of those who have helped us through the year have been thanked on an individual level and on a communal level, it is so important that we create this Soiree and this journal, this opportunity for every one of us to express our own gratitude, large and small, since gratitude is something that must come directly from us. When we repeat the Amidah during Shacharit, Mussaf and Mincha, the congregation normally answers amen to each blessing recited by the Chazan. However, when it comes to the blessing of “Modim,” the congregation says a parallel passage of Modim while the Chazan recites his. R. David Avudirham (14th Century) explains that the congregation
must recite its own Modim in concert with the Chazan because as opposed to every other blessing and aspiration where the Chazan can represent the congregation, when it comes to gratitude no one can say “Thank You” for us. Gratitude is something that must come directly from us. Toward that end, tonight we pause so that each of us can express our gratitude to all those who have helped us through this time. I will lead us off by saying: Thank you so much to all of you for being part of our shul and community, to all those who gave of themselves to me, to KMS and to others this year, and to all those who made this year just a little bit more bearable. Also, a big Mazal Tov to our Youth Honorees this year: Benny Margulies, Ari Siegel, Gabi Loshin, Dalia Albert, Talya Lebson, Shai Margulies, Tekoa Sultan-Reisler, Yonatan Cohen, Shuli Frenkel, and Brianna Loshin. You have each contributed in different ways to the incredible youth program we have at KMS. You are role models to the younger kids in our shul of what it means to be committed to Torah and to community. You have developed a sense of yearning for growth and leadership and I know that will carry you so well into the next phases of your lives. I hope we as a community can continue to grow and go “MeChayil el Chayil” strengthening each other and being strengthened in the process. Wishing you all good health! Rabbi Brahm Weinberg
President’s Message
Dear Friends, Throughout the year, our members support KMS with their time, talents, and financial resources. Our vibrant shul relies on members’ generosity in so many ways. Our members contribute invaluable hours to make our minyanim, classes, youth activities, and events successful. Before and during the pandemic, our members have been very generous with their tzedakah to KMS. Your participation in tonight’s Soiree and Journal is most appreciated and demonstrates your commitment to, and appreciation of our shul. In addition to expressing hakarat hatov to our “KMS Responders” who you will hear and read about tonight, I want to thank all our members who support KMS throughout the year in so many ways. Tonight, we honor the “KMS Responders” who made each of our lives more safe, more interesting, more financially secure, and more connected to others and to HaShem. Nearly each week of the past 15 months brought unanticipated changes that required KMS to pivot in how we dealt with everything from ritual matters and youth activities to aiding our community through tech support, shopping assistance and even food relief. So many people helped us through the pandemic; it is simply impossible to individually name them. I hope you will take time to read through the dedications in this journal and be reminded of all the ways we helped each other during these trying times. I want to give a shout out to our Soiree and Journal Chairs. Thank you Sharona, Leo, Becky, Gadi, Allison and Elana for your vision, creativity, and determination. This is but one aspect of the tremendous work you do on behalf of KMS and we appreciate it all. I hope you all enjoy the evening and I look forward to seeing you in person at KMS. Larry Lerman

Friends and neighbors, Greetings to Kemp Mill Synagogue on the occasion of your Spring Soiree. KMS is a pillar of our Jewish and local community, and your collective contributions over the past year have been vital to keeping Montgomery County safe and healthy during these tumultuous times. I want to extend my deepest gratitude and congratulations to the honorees—Rabbi Weinberg, KMS sta , the teen leaders, the education team, the house & grounds team, the re-opening task force, and all the frontline healthcare workers. You appreciate that acts of kindness can be found in the simplest of places, like a shopping cart or an online vaccine portal. And you all have given hours of your time to keep the synagogue humming and to keep our greater community both physically safe and spiritually connected. I hope the soiree allows you to reconnect with those you’ve missed seeing, and wish you all warmth, light, and good health as we head into a new season. Warmest regards, Delegate Vaughn Stewart District 19

Dear Kemp Mill Community, It is truly an honor to join you in celebrating the Synagogue’s Spring Soirée. This past year has highlighted the needs of many in our community and your collective commitment to the social welfare of the residents of our county has brought light during such a dark time. This celebration of gratitude is welldeserved. I would like to acknowledge and thank the Kemp Mill Synagogue community for your dedication to pandemic relief as you assisted your neighbors with their shopping needs and vaccine appointments, with special attention and care for those who are homebound. Many of you went above and beyond to maintain the synagogue and adapted to continue events and services. Words will not do justice for the sacrifices the healthcare workers in your congregation made during this time as well. With deepest gratitude for your ongoing commitment to Tikkun Olam and continued contributions to Montgomery County, best wishes for continued growth and success.
Sincerely,

THE CHESED TEAM In addition to our ongoing member support during shivah and illness, the Chesed Committee dedicated this past year to proactively supporting members facing COVID, as well as those homebound during the pandemic. Team members delivered meals, coordinated medication pickup, facilitated grocery shopping, provided tech help and registered elderly and vulnerable populations for vaccine appointments. The team also spearheaded community initiatives in support of Holy Cross Hospital, Yad Yehuda and the Silver Spring Christian Reformed Church pantry to provide meals for frontline healthcare workers, groceries for those facing food insecurity and funds to expand hospital capacity to care for COVID patients.
We salute and express our gratitude to the dedicated volunteers of the Chesed Committee:

THE GABBAIM & RITUAL TEAM Since reopening our minyanim the job description of gabbai has been redefined by the day. Gabbaim have become registration wizards, mask proctors, distance monitors, weather forecasters, and Chanukah candle wind protectors all while still needing to ensure that davening itself runs smoothly. High Holiday planning included offsite minyanim, seating algorithms, Torah deliveries, and rehearsals of mask-covered shofar blowing outside. Through it all, our Gabbaim and everyone on our ritual team showed resilience and agility in dealing with shifting guidelines, unexpected circumstances, and uncooperative weather, ensuring constant Tefilah B’tzibbir during a time when the very nature of what tzibbur meant was in doubt.
We salute and express our gratitude to the dedicated volunteers of the Ritual Committee:

THE KEHILLA TEAM We thank the volunteers of the Kehilla committee who so quickly and creatively found ways to support our community over the past year. Our team members arranged lifestyle and holiday Zoom programs, concerts, virtual tours, cooking classes, and the assembly and delivery of Yom Tov gift baskets and booklets. Our shul welcomed new members, and it was the kehilla committee who reached out with gift baskets and kind words to those new to our area. The Kehilla team members were dedicated to ensuring our sense of unity was sustained throughout this challenging time, and we have all benefited from the love and thoughtfulness that was demonstrated through their hard work.

THE YOUTH DIRECTORS, TEAM & GRADUATING TEEN LEADERS KMS Youth Directors Rabbi Aaron and Elisheva Levitt, as well as Youth Committee volunteers and the Bnei Akiva Vaad Horim, worked tirelessly to keep the children of the community connected to KMS and engaged in Jewish life and learning during the pandemic. The Youth Team ran Grab ‘n Go events to help celebrate holidays, a myriad of online programming (including a mini-Megillah reading and puppet show, summer davening, parent-child learning and many cooking activities), in-person outdoor activities, Junior Davening, and teen minyan. Led by teen leaders, KMS also ran “Groups on the Grass” after Shabbat morning davening including through the cold winter months - to help young children and their families have a sense of community and celebrate Shabbat. In addition to leading Shabbat groups, teen leaders stepped up during this unprecedented time to run Bnei Akiva activities outdoors and keep the teen minyan going by serving as gabbaim, layning, and giving divrei Torah.
We salute and express our gratitude to the KMS Youth Team and Teen Leaders:

Through dedicating their time and knowledge to KMS, the Taskforce helped us re-open for minyanim starting in June of 2020 and they continue to be instrumental in advising KMS leadership regarding key decisions as we have expanded our offerings, while maintaining a safe environment during the past 15 months. RABBI WEINBERG For most KMS members, the virtual presence of our mara d’atra, Rabbi Weinberg, infused our lives with Torah, spiritual connections and practical advice enabling us to observe a full cycle of yom tovim and life cycle events under extraordinary, even historic, circumstances. We are thankful for the Rabbi’s tireless, practically 24/7 efforts, to play an important role in our lives through Zoom and written words, and to help many of us address personal issues. We extend our hakarat hatov to the entire Weinberg family for sharing the Rabbi with us in such an intense way during the pandemic.
We salute and express our gratitude to Rabbi Weinberg for his leadership and guidance:

In Tribute to THE KMS STAFF
The office and maintenance staff have been the heartbeat of the shul this past year, keeping KMS running smoothly throughout the pandemic. It’s easy to take for granted all the behind the scenes details that are involved in setting up KMS. From minyanim to Groups on the Grass, Sako and Sevana ensure that everything is done just right. Sevana is a familiar face to those who came early to the 9AM outdoor minyan and found her cleaning all the chairs. For those who’ve had to plan smachot during the pandemic, Mindy has continued to be the friendly guide to help make a Bar or Bat Mitzvah as special as it could be during these challenging times. Elisheva wowed us with her graphic designs in the Rosh Hashana and Pesach handbooks and helps us stay up to date through the daily KMS emails. Many of the logistics of this year have been made possible thanks to our extraordinary Executive Director, Aryeh. He has cultivated a relationship with many of us and as a result he is our first and last stop for anything shul related.
We salute and express our gratitude to the dedicated members of the KMS Staff:

KMS FRONT LINE HEALTHCARE WORKERS KMS would like to thank the frontline healthcare workers in our community who went above and beyond their usual call of duty, putting themselves in harms way while caring for others during the COVID pandemic. Thanks to the creativity, can-do attitudes, and hard work of our officers, KMS keeps our kehila dynamic and strong.

A President’s Ode of Thanks Being President of KMS at any time is no easy task. Imagine trying to do it while wearing a mask. Closing the shul after Purim felt like doom and gloom. But soon we discovered the value of Zoom. There are so many people due much thanks. Creative and hardworking Veeps and Volunteers fill the ranks. I receive much guidance from our Rabbi and Staff. Together we had a new world to choreograph. I am so fortunate to work with a great leadership team. You make me proud; you make KMS beam. I must also thank Ina. She puts up with my presidency with glee. All the while planning trip after trip in our RV. Kol Hakavod, Larry Lerman

Our spirits were tested in these pandemic times. While we bonded with our family at home, social distance could have isolated us from our larger KMS family. Thank you Rabbi Weinberg and all the volunteers who made KMS so much a part of our lives during this very difficult year. The pandemic has shaken us to our core and tested us in ways we never would have imagined. But during some of the darkest times, there would be a knock on the door and a volunteer would drop off a KMS package. It put smiles on our faces and gave us moments of joy. Recently I reached out to Pastor Doug Bratt from the Silver Spring Christian Reformed Church, which provides 900 meals each week to families in the Kemp Mill area with food needs. The Pastor was overwhelmed by the support from the KMS community, which made us very proud. This was exactly the intention of the original KMS mission that the founders envisioned: “For the good of the Jewish community and the community as a whole.” Thanks again to the Rabbi and all the hard working volunteers for your wonderful chesed - because of you, we will emerge a much stronger community.
