Guests of Honor Naomi Baum & Saul Newman Naomi is from San Francisco, Saul is from Far Rockaway (Bayswater), and they met at Kesher Israel, introduced by then-president Michael Gelfand, z”l. Saul asked how he could join the shul and Michael told him to speak to Naomi, the chair of the Membership Committee, and their conversation is still going strong. What brought Saul and Naomi to KMS are the shul’s hashkafa, the interesting divrei Torah, old friends from Kesher Israel, and their children’s friends. Naomi spent more than 20 years working in the U.S. Senate and now is the COO of a nonprofit research organization that works to reduce energy waste and combat climate change. Saul is a political scientist and an associate dean at American University. Should Scotland achieve independence from the United Kingdom, he would like to be considered for the position of the first U.S. Ambassador to Scotland.

Naomi has been deeply involved with the Mikveh Emunah Society. She led the committee that chose the Wallerstein Mikveh site next to KMS, and she has overseen the management of the Wallerstein Mikveh since its opening. She also serves on the board of Sulam. Saul spent more than eight years organizing divrei Torah at the KMS hashkamah minyan. He was chair of the Rabbinic Transition Research Subcommittee that oversaw the planning of the 2014-2015 rabbinic search, co-chaired the rabbinic search that resulted in the hiring of Rabbi Weinberg, and served on the KMS board as Vice President of Development, First Vice President, and President of KMS. Naomi and Saul have three children who loved growing up at KMS. Ezra and Leah are lawyers in NYC, and Betzalel works at a think tank in DC. Their memories of KMS include, for Ezra: hashkama and youth minyan; for Leah: being a part of the youth minyan when the space was built/created and being so excited that “we had a space of our own,” and for Betzalel giving divrei torah and laining at youth minyan and at his Bar Mitzvah. The most popular member of the family is Naomi’s mom, Evelyn Baum, who moved to Kemp Mill five years ago.

Community Service Honorees Mandi & David Lowenstein Mandi and David Lowenstein met at the Boston University Hillel in 1994 when both were students at B.U. David also attended the Washington College of Law at American University and is now an attorney at Vetus Legal representing veterans and their dependents in cases before the Department of Veterans Affairs and federal courts. Mandi has a degree in Operations Management from the Boston University School of Business and is currently a Project Manager for IT government contracts at Booz, Allen Hamilton. David and Mandi moved to Kemp Mill in 1997 and lived at the Warwick, walking to KMS each week “because of our friends, inviting and welcoming members, and small, intimate davening.” Over the last 25 years they have both held key positions at KMS. Both Mandi and David have been board members, chairs of the board nominating committee, co-chairs of a KMS annual banquet and members of the youth committee.

GOLD

PLATINUM

In addition, Mandi has served on the education committee and David on the chesed committee. In that capacity, during the pandemic, David produced a video on critical Jewish organizations in the greater Washington area that connected the KMS community to services available if needed, and opportunities to help others. The Lowensteins are grateful for the spiritual inspiration they have gotten at KMS. For Mandi, it was when Rabbi Weinberg challenged the community to learn 15 minutes a day. She took on that challenge which has helped her form new and transformative daily habits. For David, it was the collective Torah knowledge, world life experiences and inspiring words of Rabbi Jonathan Sacks and Rav Benny Lau during their Scholar in Residence visits to KMS. The Lowensteins have three children, Shana, 22, Elie, 20 and Kira 15. Strong memories of growing up at KMS for the Lowenstein kids include learning all night on Shavuot with friends, celebrating Simchat Torah, Bnei Akiva Shabbatons, and cholent kiddushes. Mandi considers her most important contribution to KMS to be the nominating committees she chaired. For David, it was making cold brew (coffee) and serving food over Shavuot.

Calanit Epstein

A lifelong member of KMS, Calanit’s first visit came at her Simchat Bat, followed by multiple years of attendance at the Hashkama minyan before realizing that was too early to wake up. She celebrated her Bat Mitzvah at the Women’s Tefilah Group, is a regular attendee of the Friday night Ruach Minyan and has given multiple Divrei Torah in the youth minyan. Throughout her childhood, KMS has afforded her multiple opportunities to express her love for Israel and the community, including engaging in chesed activities regularly, serving as madricha for 3 years in Bnei Akiva, and then as Rosh Zach and Chavraya Bet this year. When she’s not in shul, Calanit loves spending time with her friends from Kemp Mill, Camp Moshava, and the Yesodot dance troupe. She’s an avid Berman sports fan and photographer, a proud feminist and activist, a loving sister, daughter, niece, grandaughter and cousin, and an inquisitve and passionate student with a zest for travel. She also really likes mac & cheese (especially Siena’s). Next year, she will be participating in the Bnei Akiva program in Israel, Kivun, and plans to attend the University of Maryland thereafter.

Zachary Fine

Zachary has been an active participant and leader of the KMS Youth Minyan from a young age, acting as a representative on the Youth Board, Ruach Minyan Gabbai, and Shabbos Day Youth Minyan Gabbai. He enjoys speaking, layning, and davening (some may consider him a triple threat) whenever asked to do so by KMS. When Zachary is not running a minyan at KMS he is running a minyan at Berman, assisting senior citizens with their technology as part of tech café, or running the tech for the Berman Upper School. Zachary lights up the KMS community through his love of Torah and by placing lanterns on the Stonington Auth cut-through to light the cutthrough for Shabbat. In the Elul 5782 Season, Zachary will be taking his talents to the Gush Beit Midrash and will attend WashU in St. Louis the following year.

Simon Goldberg

Simon has been a part of the KMS community since he was born. He is an active shul goer, whether he’s in youth minyan or volunteering to leiyn at

GOLD

PLATINUM

Shabbat Mincha. Simon took a leadership role by volunteering with Bnei Akiva throughout high school, as both a madrich at Snif and later as Rosh Za’’ch. In addition to his KMS involvement, Simon is currently a senior at Berman where he plays an active role on many sports teams. He competed on the varsity baseball and basketball teams, and was the captain of the soccer team. In addition to his studies, he worked at Dunkin Donuts and Hampshire Greens Golf Course. Simon is continuing his Jewish education at Yeshivat Orayta in the fall and then is headed to the University of Maryland in College Park.

Benjamin Guggenheim

Ben is an enthusiastic participant in the KMS Teen Minyan, where he frequently gives Divrei Torah, layns, and serves as Shaliach Tzibor. Through KMS, Ben also layns megillah, and blows shofar at a local hospital. Outside of KMS, Ben has served as a team lead for the JCRC’s Student to Student program, is a Bronfman fellow, a Tikvah fellow, a volunteer at the local food pantry and with Yachad DC, and records a monthly podcast on the Jewish Apocrypha, Parabiblica for the Perplexed.

GOLD

PLATINUM

Ben is a 2022 graduate of the Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School ( JDS) and currently is on the JDS capstone trip to Israel. At JDS, Ben was inducted into the Arabic Honor Society, received the Global Seal of Biliteracy for Hebrew, was a National Merit Commended Student, on the Dean’s List, received an award for school service for Mock Trial (co-captain), and was on the varsity cross country (co-captain) and track teams. Ben is looking forward to studying next year in Israel at Yeshivat Ma’ale Gilboa, and then continuing his studies in the joint Columbia University/JTS college program.

Brooke Hollander

Brooke is honored to be one of the 2022 KMS Youth Honorees. Brooke has been an active member in the KMS community from a young age, starting with going to groups and Bnei Akiva in Lower School, layning at WTG, and volunteering on the Middle School KMS board. She also won the 2020 KMS Teen Jewish Ethics Essay Contest. Brooke has taken on more leadership positions at KMS in high school, and has been working in the 1st and 2nd grade groups for four years, in addition to serving as Rosh Snif of Bnei Akiva.

GOLD

PLATINUM

When Brooke is not planning KMS activities, she is likely babysitting, running, rock climbing, working on the Berman yearbook as Editor-inChief, or volunteering at Holy Cross Hospital. Brooke will be attending Midreshet Harova this fall, and will start college the following year at the University of Maryland Scholars. She is grateful to the KMS community for supporting her and helping her build her leadership skills.

Isaac Kushnir

Isaac Kushnir has been an enthusiastic participant in KMS youth activities since his bar mitzvah. Once he became a bar mitzvah, Isaac regularly volunteered to lein and daven for the youth minyan. Starting in ninth grade, Isaac began participating in Bnei Akiva and this past year he was named Rosh Sniff (leader of Shabbos youth activities). As Rosh Sniff, Isaac organizes and leads activities, recruits younger members, and serves as a role model for 2nd-5th graders. Isaac is also a very engaged member of the Berman High School community, where he is a senior. Isaac was the captain of Model UN, head of the

GOLD

finance club, and an active volunteer with Imadi. On the playing field, Isaac was a varsity member of the soccer team, basketball team and volleyball team. Isaac is looking forward to spending next year at Yeshivat Orayta and the following year at the University of Maryland.

Noah Osofsky

Noah has served for several years as a first and second grade group leader. He is motivated to do that because, as children are unable to use their electronics on Shabbat, they may find it boring and even begin to dislike it. He has done his best to make Shabbat special for every kid, and to help provide an environment where every kid can have fun, make new friends, and feel included, all without touching a computer. Outside of KMS, he enjoys ping pong, piano and chess. He has recently graduated from CESJDS, and now tutors at Mathnasium. He is looking forward to going to Brandeis next year.

GOLD

Leora Spielman

Leora has been an active participant of KMS youth programming for 15 years! Throughout her preschool and lower school years, Leora enjoyed partaking in KMS youth activities such as Bnei Akiva and shul youth events for chagim and chesed. After returning from living in Herzliya, Israel for 3 years with her family, in high school Leora has taken on leadership roles in Bnei Akiva serving as Rosh Snif for grades 2-5, leading mifkad with enthusiasm, and representing the message of Bnei Akiva. Leora is a consistent and weekly attendee of the Youth minyan every Shabbat and Sunday mornings, and she has also leined for the KMS Women’s Tefillah Group. When Leora is not involved in KMS events, she is a senior at Berman Hebrew Academy, where she was Design Editor of the Berman yearbook and Layout Editor of the Berman high school newspaper, “HaModiya”. Aside from Leora’s graphic design skills, her additional various artistic talents are frequently called upon for numerous school activities, including Shabbatonim and Color War, among many others. Leora truly enjoys learning Gemara in her midrasha class, and she is looking forward to continuing her Jewish

GOLD

Education at Beit Midrash G’vohah L’Nashim Migdal Oz at Kibbutz Migdal Oz in Gush Etzion, Israel. Leora and her family are very grateful to KMS for their support over the years, and especially for creating an inclusive and encouraging environment for youth and women to positively participate in shul events at KMS.

Benjamin Winters

Ever since Ben set foot in KMS, he knew he wanted to be like his madrichim and the youth gabbaim one day, and he did just that. After participating in Bnei Akiva and the Youth Minyan, Ben took on leadership roles in both, becoming a madrich for 2 years, working his way up to Youth Minyan Co-Gabbai, and frequently layning and davening. His favorite aspect of the KMS community is how it encourages and provides opportunities for youth leadership, and these experiences have helped shape him into the person he is today. Ben attends Berman Hebrew Academy, where he has played on the soccer, basketball, and baseball teams, and served last year as co-captain of the Model UN team. Ben is looking forward to continuing his leadership role at Yeshivat Torat Shraga, where he will study next year.

Rabbi’s Message

Today we celebrate the holiday of Lag Baomer. Although the day of Lag Baomer is associated with R. Akiva and the end of the plague that took so many of his students, it is also known as the yahrzeit of the great sage of the Mishna, R. Shimon bar Yochai. It is a day on which we celebrate the amazing volumes of Torah brought into the world by this holy sage.

There is also a tradition that this is the day on which R. Shimon bar Yochai exited the cave in the famous story recorded in the Gemara in Masechet Shabbat (33b). Facing the ire of the Romans, R. Shimon and his son escape to live in safety hidden in a cave where Hashem miraculously provides for their sustenance so they could learn Torah all day and night. After living a life of isolation and holiness for a year in the cave, R. Shimon emerges and starts destroying the world which he felt was mundane and lacked the requisite holiness. Hashem sends him back to the cave to teach him that kedusha, holiness, can be found anywhere and everywhere if you look for it, cultivate it, and inspire it to come forward. The highest level of kedusha is not one that comes down from the purity of Heaven or from the untainted life of Torah in a cave, but, actually, the kedusha you find amidst the physicality and amidst the imperfection of the world. Our goal as people of the Torah is to find the opportunities to infuse the everyday with holiness, to infuse the mundane with the sacred, and to infuse the world with Godliness. That is what we celebrate

GOLD

on Lag Baomer and that is what we try to achieve at KMS. The goal for our shul is that it should be a place that enables us to bring greater sanctity and holiness to our individual and communal lives. The goal for our shul is that it should provide opportunities for people to connect with kedusha and with Hashem in meaningful ways. Our shul can only do that because we have such incredible members who share that vision and help to bring it about.

Naomi and Saul, Mandi and David: You are people who not only lead lives of kedusha yourselves, but look for it, cultivate it, and inspire it to come forward in others. You have done so much to contribute to the life and vibrancy of our wonderful shul and make it a place that is successful. Your dedication is remarkable. No task is ever too big, too small, or beneath you. You step up when called upon and that is truly a gift. I cannot thank you enough for being there for this community at every step of the way. Mazal tov on this very well-deserved honor. Calanit, Zachary, Simon, Benjamin G, Brooke, Isaac, Noah, Leora, Benjamin W: You have each contributed in different ways to the incredible youth program we have at KMS. You are role models to the younger kids in our shul of what it means to be a part of a community and strive to infuse it with kedusha. You have developed a sense of yearning from growth and leadership in both arenas and I know that will carry you so well into the next phases of your lives. Mazal Tov to all! Rabbi Weinberg

President’s Message Dear KMS Community, Thank you for joining us tonight to celebrate our 32nd Annual KMS Banquet. After two years in which we were unable to do so, we are fortunate to once again be able to gather in person to honor and celebrate two very worthy couples, as well as our youth honorees. Celebrating on Lag B’Omer this year is very fitting given at least one of the explanations provided by our sages regarding the meaning of the day. The Chasam Sofer writes that Lag B’Omer (18th of Iyar) was the first day that manna fell from heaven. According to this timeline, B’nai Yisrael finished the matzah that they had taken from Egypt on the 15th of Iyar, which was one month after Pesach, and then went hungry for three days. At that time, Hashem provided the manna miraculously in the wilderness. This nourishment sustained the Jewish people in the desert, providing them the energy needed to serve Hashem during the 40 years they wandered in the desert. Likewise, KMS provides us with spiritual nourishment during our years wandering through Kemp Mill as a prelude to the ultimate redemption.

GOLD

PLATINUM

Our well-deserving honorees have enabled all of us to be supported by KMS through their leadership and volunteerism. The benefits we receive from KMS would not be possible without the work of dedicated volunteers and leaders like Saul and Naomi and David and Mandi. And just like our ancestors wandered the desert, but ultimately saw their children and grandchildren take the next steps in leading our people into Israel, so to do we honor our young leaders, thank them for their service to our shul, and look forward to watching them move forward as leaders of the next generation. Please join me in recognizing and thanking this year’s honorees! Sincerely, Ephraim Leibtag

“The test of faith is whether I can make space for difference. Can I recognize God’s image in someone who is not in my image, whose language, faith, ideal, are different from mine? If I cannot, then I have made God in my image instead of allowing him to remake me in his.” ~ Jonathan Sacks To our beloved Calanit, Your first day of school, the day you first stepped out to change the world. And you have never looked back. We have watched you grow & flourish, embracing every human being you encounter & every opportunity Hashem and our community have afforded you to appreciate and enrich the world around you.
