olvo Trucks has revealed the new Volvo FMX at the Bauma show in Munich, Germany. The Swedish manufacturer said the new FMX is easier to drive and boasts several innovations to boost its efficiency and off-road capability for models with a single steered front axle. Volvo said the driver can steer a heavily loaded truck without the slightest effort thanks to new Volvo Dynamic Steering technology. “The patented Volvo Dynamic Steering system benefits all drivers, but its advantages are most noticeable when driving at low speeds. The effortless steering makes the construction truck driver’s job far easier,” said Claes Nilsson, president of Volvo Trucks. The new FMX features an electronically controlled electric motor attached to the steering gear, which works together with the hydraulic power steering and is regulated thousands of times per second by its electronic control unit. Another benefit is that Volvo Dynamic Steering self-centres automatically when reversing. “At low speeds, the electric motor replaces the driver’s muscle-power. Instead, the driver can relax and steer without any effort and strain,” said Gustav Neander, project manager for Volvo Dynamic Steering.

A new suspension system features automatic ride-height control and offers 300 mm of ground clearance. The new off-road air suspension is available in both 4x2 and 6x4 configuration, but with the 8x4 axle configuration on both the traditional twin front axle set-up and the new Tridem design. The vehicle offers improved stability as the anti-roll bar is now positioned in the centre of the bogie. At the same time, there are no unprotected suspension components behind the truck’s last axle, so making it a good fit for tipping into asphalt pavers. To create a tighter turning circle and reduced tyre wear, it is possible to specify the 8x4 configuration with tridem bogie with a hydraulically steered tag axle. The tag axle can also be lifted or dumped for increased drive axle traction in difficult operating conditions, as well as reducing tyre wear when running unladen. FMX 4x4 and 6x6 all-wheel drive vehicles can be spec’d with I-Shift automated transmission, which now has a longer oil-change interval of 45,000 km. The front-wheel drive system has been further refined to deliver Volvo Dynamic Steering system makes the wheel effortless to turn at low speeds

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros premium long-haul tractor unit range was the star attraction for some of the North-West’s leading road transport operators, at a launch event staged by leading dealer Enza.

PO Box 978, Peterborough, PE1 9FL

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. The route included single- and dualMark May reckons the new Mercedes-Benz Actros is ʻbrilliantʼ. carriageway roads. Each of the four demonstrator trucks provided for the event made 10 journeys - a total of almost 700 miles covered on the day. On each trip, the mpg figure achieved was recorded and at the end of the day the winner was Craig Stewart, logistics manager at Widnes-based Ray Stewart Haulage, who averaged an impressive 11.4 mpg in the 510 bhp V8-powered Actros 2551, and 11.8 mpg in the 450 bhp Actros 2545 model. Between journeys, guests also enjoyed ‘hot laps’ of the Oulton Park circuit in two-seater racing cars piloted by professional drivers. PERSONAL INJURY SPECIALISTS Transport manager Mark May of food waste and animal by-products recycling specialist John Pointon & Sons, summed up the feelings of many when he said: “It was a great day, very informative and enjoyable, and superbly organised. The new Actros is brilliant. The driving experience was fantastic and if the fuel performance figures are to be believed it will be an unbeatable all-round package. The previous Actros is a very good truck - but this new one is a huge step forward.”

New FMX boasts a range of improvements to enhance its on-site creditials

increased off-road capability and endurance. The driven front axle has been relocated 100 mm further forward to the same position as a non-driven front axle. In addition, the parallel rod has been moved up to a more protected location. The shorter front overhang means the approach angle has also increased. Driven front axle is available in the

following axle configurations: 4x4, 6x6 tractor and rigid and 8x6 rigid. The new FMX is available with a choice of 11- and 13-litre Euro 6 engines. The D13 has power outputs from 420 to 500 bhp, while the D11 spans the range from 330-450 bhp. To meet Euro 6 requirements, the engine has been equipped with a non-cooled EGR system for recirculation of exhaust gases. The new Volvo FMX cab is made of high-tensile steel. All components in the front structure have been redesigned – and a large number of them have been moved to make the new FMX more robust in rough construction environments. Production for European customers will get under way in September 2013.
