Lou ck Bro

the time of your life

5

Lou Brock made his major league debut as a member of the Chicago Cubs, but spent most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals after one of the most lopsided trades in baseball history. A starting outfielder with the Cubs, he showed some flashes of speed, stealing 24 bases in 1963. Midway through the 1964 season, he was traded to the Cardinals along with two other players for Ernie Broglio and two others. To this day, the Brock for Broglio trade is considered by Cubs fans to be the worst in franchise history.

Hall of Fame 1985

Brock averaged .348 in the 1964 stretch drive and finished the season at .315, with 111 runs scored, 200 hits, 30 doubles, 11 triples, and 43 stolen bases. In fourth place when Brock joined them, the Cardinals overtook the Phillies, Giants, and Reds to claim the pennant in the last week of the season. He reached the World Series three times with the Cards, hitting .391 in 21 games. In 1974, he stole 118 bases, a record, at the time. Brock helped the Cardinals win two World Series in 1964 and 1967, defeating the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox, respectively, and led them to another, a Series loss to the Detroit Tigers in 1968. He ended his career after the 1979 season with a then-record 938 steals. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on January 7, 1985 by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Brock’s greatest season was probably 1967, when he led the Cardinals with a league-leading 113 runs scored, 52 steals, and career highs of 21 homers, 76 RBI, and a .472 slugging average. Brock batted .414 with seven steals against Boston in

the WS, breaking or tying four Series records. Although he slumped to .279 in 1968, Brock helped St. Louis win the pennant again by leading the NL in doubles (46) and triples (14) as well as steals (62). The Cardinals lost the World Series to the Tigers in seven games, but Brock was sensational. He hit .464 to lead both clubs, with two homers and seven steals. At that time he had the highest average (.391) of any player in two or more World Series, along with a Series-record 14 steals. Over his 19 seasons, Lou Brock stole 938 bases, scored 90 runs in ten seasons, batted .300 in eight different seasons, and captured eight stolen base titles. Brock is also a member of the elite 3,000 club. As a result of all of these accomplishments, Brock was selected to the All-Star team six times, inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame his first year eligible in 1985, named as one of the “Top 100 Players in the Century”, and was the only baseball player to have an award named in his honor while still being an active player.

Bruce Sutter

the time of your life

13

Bruce Sutter was 23 years old when he broke into the big leagues on May 9, 1976, with the Chicago Cubs. One of the sport’s dominant relievers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, he became the only pitcher to lead the NL in saves five times (1979-1982, 1984), and retired with 300 saves – at the time, the third highest total in history, behind Rollie Fingers (341) and Rich “Goose” Gossage (302), and an NL record until broken by Lee Smith in 1993; Sutter had set the NL record in 1982 with his 194th save, surpassing the mark held by Roy Face. In his first nine seasons, only Kent Tekulve made more appearances, and he saved 133 of the Chicago Cubs’ 379 wins between 1976 and 1980. In 1979, Sutter won the NL’s Cy Young Award as the league’s top pitcher.

Hall of Fame 2006

He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 2006, becoming only the fourth relief pitcher to get into the Hall of Fame, and the first one ever elected without making even one Major League start. The right-handed relief pitcher was arguably the first pitcher to make effective use of the split-finger fastball, which he called “The Jewel”. It

was in the Cubs’ farm system that Sutter was taught the splitfinger fastball by minor league pitching instructor Fred Martin. On September 8, 1977, Sutter struck out three batters on nine pitches — Ellis Valentine, Gary Carter and Larry Parrish — in the ninth inning of a 10-inning 3-2 win over the Montreal Expos. Sutter became the 12th National League pitcher and the 19th pitcher in Major League history to accomplish the nine-strike/three-strikeout half-inning. Sutter had also struck out the side (though not on nine pitches) upon entering the game in the eighth inning, giving him six consecutive strikeouts, tying the NL record for a reliever. After being selected by the Washington Senators in the 21st round of the June 1970 draft, Sutter instead attended Old Dominion University, and later signed with the Cubs as a free agent in September 1971. He spent slightly over four seasons in the Cubs’ farm system, and joined the Chicago Cubs in May 1976. Vincent Van Go!!

As the leadoff hitter and baserunning sparkplug, Vince Coleman helped the Cardinals reach the 1985 playoffs. In 86 Coleman became the 4th-ever unanimous selection for the NL Rookie of the Year Award. In 81, he set the all-time single season SB record at Florida A&M with 65 steals in 69 attempts. While at FAMU, Coleman was also a kicker and punter on the FB team, and is fondly remembered for kicking a game-winning 34-yard FG in an unlikely 16-13 Rattler win over Miami in 79. Coleman still holds the all-time professional mark for stolen bases in a single season with 145 for Macon of the South Atlantic League in 83, Coleman set the mark despite missing a month of the season with a broken hand. Coleman stole 110 bases in his debut season in 85. Coleman’s best season was 87, when he posted a .289 BA, 180 H, 109 SB, & 121 runs scored. He stole 2nd & 3rd in the same inning 13 times that year. In June, he recorded his 500th SB in just his 804th game. Coleman played in his only WS in 1987.

DC, Coxie

Danny Cox will always be remembered for two things: his changeup and being the key ingredient in the Cardinals’ 1985 pennant race. In 1985, only the second full season for Cox, he garnered 18 wins, 10 complete games and 4 shutouts for the Cardinals. Unfortunately, injuries cut his career with the Cardinals short, but he was able to come back and play for the Phillies, Pirates, and Jays. Cox, the Cardinals’ 13th round draft pick in 1981, spent 11 seasons as a major-league pitcher and was with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1983 to 1988. He helped them win two National League championships and pitched in the 1985 and 1987 World Series. Cox’s best season was in 1985, when he turned in an 18-9 record and 2.88 ERA to help the Cards reach the World Series. In 1993, he recorded a 3.12 ERA with the World Champion Blue Jays. Danny Cox retired after the 1995 season with a career 3.64 ERA. Cox finished up his career as bullpen mainstay for the Blue Jays, tossing five scoreless innings in the 1993 ALCS and pitching in his 3rd World Series that October.

Bob Forsch played most of his career with the St. Louis Cardinals and had numerous accomplishments to show for it. In 1977, he won 20 games and led the Cardinals staff in victories 6 times, including 15 wins in 75 & 82. Forsch was a power pitcher early in his career, he later relied on his deliberate delivery, pinpoint control, and his change-up, mixed with a sinker & an occasional FB.

A converted 3rd Baseman also had a wide range with the bat. He could not only lay down an important bunt, but he could also come up with some home run power in the clutch. Dog Whisperer

Known for his colorful sound bites, Steve Kline has accused umpires of favoring the New York Yankees and has jokingly said he thought about putting one ump in the “Kobra Klutch”. During his first week of play with the Orioles, Kline lashed out at his fellow teammates for not supporting him like his Cardinals teammates had when he said, “I’m so used to (Edgar) Rentería and Jimmy (Edmonds) running down my mistakes and picking me up.” Kline’s signature pitch, a sinker that seems to “roll off the kitchen table”, was a pitch he frequently used when serving as a setup man for the Cardinals. May 13, 2007, while the Giants were routing the Rockies 15-1, in the 8th inning, Kline gave up a single to Yorvit Torrealba, who stole second and scored on a base hit for the Rockies’ meaningless second run. Kline told the reporters he was angry at Torrealba for stealing a base in a 15-1 game, “You know what? I’m a dumb hick, and I forget a lot of things, but I’m not gonna forget that.” Torrealba responded by saying “What’s he gonna do? Hit me with an 84 MPH fastball?” The next time Kline faced the Rockies, on May 26, Kline hit Torrealba on the 1st pitch an 88 MPH fastball.

Notable Achievements * In 2005, he posted a 4.28 ERA * In 2007, pitched in 68 games, 46 innings with a 4.70 ERA

Tewks

Tewksbury was drafted by the NY Yankees in the 19th round of the 1981 draft. He played two years, before being sent to the Chicago Cubs. As a free agent in 1988, he signed with the St. Louis Cardinals, where he would stay until 1994. Finishing his career with 1 year stints with the Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and 2 years with the Minnesota Twins. Due to the shoulder and arm problems he would face over the course of his playing career, Tewksbury became known as an excellent control pitcher. His best year was 1992, in which he went 16-5 on the season and had a 2.16 ERA in 233 innings pitched. He appeared in the All-Star game and was third in the Cy Young Award voting that year.

Words of Wisdom from Sports Pychologist: Bob Tewksbury: What are you looking forward to: today...that’s all I know I have... Hero: my wife- Laura- and for all you who read this saying “ahhhh”- save it!! Hobbies: Golf -art Interests: I am interested in how they make tunnels under the water and how boats weighing 100’s of tons float! Who’s on First: i know who is NOT on first and that would be Cohen Favorite TV Show: Seinfeld Biggest Fear: Looking like Tom Pagnozzi Best Road Trip: going to San Fransisco Funniest Cardinal Moment: Watching Danny Cox run the bases 3 Wishes: wish i could have thrown 90 mph, wish I could have played with Bob Gibson & wish i would have seen ??? Who’s on your IPOD: none of your business! Dating Game: Jamie Lee Curtis, Jennifer Aniston & Rene Russo

In 1997, the ever-crafty Tewksbury threw a Eephus pitch, joining an elite few who have thrown the “junkiest pitch in baseball.” He threw it to power-hitter Mark McGwire in an interleague play game at the Metrodome and McGwire grounded out on the pitch - twice.

Notable Achievements * All-Star (NL): 1992 * Led NL in Won-Loss % 1992 with .762

2011 Cardinals Legends Camp

The Cardinals will hold their 14th spring training season in Jupiter, Fla., in 2011 after moving from St. Petersburg, Fla. in 1998. The team conducts spring workouts at the Roger Dean Stadium Complex, a $28 million facility specially designed to house two Major League Baseball teams. Roger Dean is the only stadium in Florida to host two spring training teams as the complex is shared with the Florida Marlins franchise. The Cardinals Complex consists of six practice fields along with club offices and a spacious clubhouse for both the major league and minor league players. The Florida Marlins have a duplicate setup on the opposite side of the complex. The main stadium can accommodate approximately 7,000 fans. The ballpark features field box, loge box, bleacher, grass berm and luxury sky box seating along with concessions and parking. Roger Dean Stadium is the only one in the country that hosts two minor league teams on a permanent basis. The Cardinals Single-A affiliate, the Palm Beach Cardinals, calls Roger Dean Stadium home as a member of the Florida State League along with the Florida Marlins Single-A club, the Jupiter Hammerheads. The Cardinals Gulf Coast League team also calls the complex home during the summer months. St. Louis plays at least 15 home games each year during spring training. Workouts begin approximately 9 a.m. and last until 1 p.m. each day before games begin, and are from 9 a.m. until noon once spring games start. Fans are welcome to observe workouts. Roger Dean Stadium is located on approximately 110 acres within the Abacoa Community. Abacoa is located on Donald Ross Road, approximately 1-1 â „ 2 miles east of Interstate 95.
