Choosing Chimney Cleaning Brushes to Get the Job Done If you want a chimney to function over a long period of time, you are going to have to make sure that it has been cleaned properly. If the chimney is not cleaned regularly, debris will build up within it and stop it from functioning as well as it used to, until it is eventually useless. In order to clean a chimney properly, you have to have the right kind of chimney cleaning brushes. There are several different types of chimney cleaning brushes, and you will have to make a selection between the different options out there. The first thing you should do is measure the diameter of your chimney, and write the measurements down on a piece of paper. Now take note over the liner material of the chimney, and whether it is straight or has bends in it. Choosing Rods If you have a straight chimney, you are probably going to want a fiberglass handle on your chimney brush. Fiberglass is not very flexible, but it is light and easy to use for cleaning. If you have a cu rvy chimney, you will have to look for a flexible handle. You will need either pro flex rods, or super flex rods. Pro flex rods are meant for very sharp bends, while super flex rods are built for slight curves. Choosing Brushes The brush is the most important part of your chimney cleaning brushes, because it is what will be making contact with the sides of the chimney. Anyone with a chimney lined with metal should be getting a poly brush. Poly is great because it will not scratch the sides of a metal chimney. A wire bristle brush that is as wide, or slightly wider than your chimney diameter is the most popular option for non-metallic chimney liners. They offer a medium level of scraping that will take away most medium to light debris. If you have a very difficult chimney to get clean because of some stubborn debris lining the sides, you should look at a flat wire brush instead. A flat wire brush offers the most intense scraping action on the side of a chimney, and will take off heavy debris. When you have the right chimney cleaning supplies, you will have an easier time getting the chimney clean, when it is time to clean them up. There is no telling how poor a chimney would perf orm without a good thorough cleaning, but as long as you keep up on regular cleaning, you will never have to worry about that. On the other hand, if you intend to pay someone else to clean out the chimney, you will not have to worry about any of this. Knowing the information is still a good idea to make sure that the cleaner is using the proper tools for your chimney. You wouldn’t want to let a cleaner with a wire bristle brush anywhere near your metal chimney liner or you would have some serious scratche s to deal with.
