Welcome Our third Annual Foundation Report highlights the ongoing advancements made at French Hospital Medical Center (FHMC) in the past year and a half as we strive to bring the best in health care to our local community. These advancements are taking place in many shapes and forms throughout the hospital—from new advanced training opportunities for our staff to the latest in medical technology to newly renovated and expanded facilities. All of this, of course, would not be possible without the dedication and generosity of our donors.

Looking forward, we are excited about the changes to come, some of which you’ll read about later in this report. We invite you to join us in our efforts to grow FHMC and to celebrate the great accomplishments we have already made. Once again, we thank you and all of our donors for your commitment to your community, not-for-profit hospital. We appreciate your support and friendship as we move forward with advancing health care for our community.

FHMC recently received recognition as a 100 Top Hospital and a 50 Top Cardiac Hospital in the nation by Thomson Reuters. As a recipient of the elite Everest Award from Thomson Reuters, FHMC was also recognized as one of twelve 100 Top Hospitals that had experienced the greatest improvement over the past five years. The significance of these awards comes from the fact that FHMC rose to the top of the nearly 3,000 hospitals of all sizes that were included in this review. These awards (and many others from independent and unbiased review organizations, such as Leap Frog, HealthGrades, and Avatar International) attest to and embody our vision of advancing local health care and how, by working together, this vision has become a reality. These achievements are something for all of us to be truly proud of, as this would not have been possible without the support of our community.

A Ne w focus on Women’s he alth Care In 2011, the former FHMC Women’s Diagnostic Center underwent a complete renovation and expansion, emerging in summer 2012 as the new Women’s Health and Imaging Center. Designed with women in mind, the Women’s Health and Imaging Center provides the best in compassionate health care, with state-ofthe-art screening and diagnostic testing. A unique feature of the Women’s Health and Imaging Center is its comfortable spa-like setting. Warm colors and soft lighting create a welcoming atmosphere. Patients are encouraged to relax in luxurious robes instead of hospital gowns and enjoy tea and refreshments while waiting for their appointments. The Women’s Health and Imaging Center services include digital mammography, breast MRI, stereotactic biopsy, breast ultrasound, bone densitometry, osteoporosis screening, and postmenopausal services. A new advanced DXA Bone Densitometer, which assists with the diagnosis and monitoring of osteoporosis, was recently funded by the Foundation and has arrived.

The Women’s Health and Imaging Center is also home to the new Osteoporosis Resource Center, which was made possible by a generous grant from the Marcled Foundation and other community contributions. The first specialized center of its kind in San Luis Obispo County, the Osteoporosis Resource Center will provide educational and prevention services to those diagnosed with or at risk for osteoporosis. The Women’s Health and Imaging Center expansion and renovation, as well as the new Osteoporosis Resource Center, were made entirely possible by generous community contributions to the FHMC Foundation. Both Centers represent FHMC’s continued commitment to providing the best in health care close to home.

Homeless Patient Support Fund Helps Those in Need In fall 2010, the Foundation received a grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to help provide stronger and more comprehensive case management services for homeless patients.

Since that time, the program has provided much needed assistance for homeless patients through a variety of means including providing transitional housing to allow for a safe, restful recovery, providing prescriptions patients otherwise could not afford, and covering costs associated with drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs needed to help patients recover. The program also provides case managers with the means to monitor patients after discharge in order to evaluate outcomes. By providing such services, these homeless patients are given the opportunity to recover from their ailments in a way that might not otherwise be possible given their circumstances, reducing additional health complications and return visits to the Emergency

Department, bettering the lives of these patients and the community at large. This program directly embodies the mission of FHMC and Dignity Health to care for the poor and disenfranchised. The ways in which this program can dramatically influence the lives of patients can be seen in the following example. A young homeless woman suffering from a serious infection related to drug abuse came to FHMC. After a few weeks at FHMC, she was ready to be discharged, although her condition required continued rest and recuperation, which would not be possible for her as a homeless patient. With no place to go, the Homeless Patient Support Fund was able to provide her with the ability to spend additional time recovering in a nursing home. As Case Management also recognized that continued drug use would likely occur, possibly resulting in continued serious health complications, the program paid for the patient to seek treatment through a drug rehabilitation program. The young woman was able to fully recuperate, complete rehabilitation, significantly change her situation, and is no longer homeless. Recently, the Foundation was also awarded a grant from the San Luis Obispo County Preventive Health Grant Program to continue funding this vital community service.

Photo provided by Laerdal.

FHMC is now home to a SimMan Essential—a realistic, full-body adult, patient simulator. Normally found only at educational medical facilities and institutions, such patient simulators offer crucial hands-on training and education for hospital employees. FHMC is the only hospital on the Central Coast with a SimMan, a manikin which simulates human conditions. The acquisition of the SimMan was made possible by a generous donation from James Flanagan, a retired Cal Poly professor and former FHMC patient. Previously, Jim worked with the FHMC Foundation to establish the James R. Flanagan Educational Advancement Endowment to help bring advanced educational opportunities to nursing and other professional staff. In his desire

to continue such efforts, Jim worked with FHMC medical personnel and Foundation staff to identify this specific program as a means of providing cutting edge technology to our San Luis Obispo health care campus. The SimMan, which has affectionately been nicknamed ‘Jimmy’ by FHMC staff, and the accompanying patient monitor provide the opportunity for hospital staff to experience, react to and treat realistic, pre-programmed patient cases including IV training, chest tube insertion, the treatment of a heart attack and more. The SimMan, which arrived in April 2012, has already been used for various trainings through the hospital and is recognized by staff as an invaluable training tool. In the future, the SimMan will be housed in a dedicated classroom in the Health Education and Technology Pavilion, a new building planned as part of the renovation and expansion project currently underway at FHMC.

Pl anning for the Future of Medicine FHMC Cardiovascular Lab Staff.

The A dvanced Cardiac H y brid Surgic al Suite In order to provide the highest quality health care for our community, FHMC has embarked on a dramatic transformation and renovation of its 40 year old facility. Numerous areas of the hospital will be expanded and renovated in order to accommodate the most advanced equipment and technologies, improve the patient experience, and support new services to meet the needs of patients and physicians. These changes will allow FHMC to continue providing cutting-edge medical care for our patients close to home, while attracting the best physician specialists. Right now, the Foundation is urgently seeking community support for the Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite and the expansion/modernization of our Emergency Department. Both efforts will bring new technologies and facilities to the Central Coast. When the need arises, access to emergency services and advanced cardiac services are critical in saving lives. FHMC is the receiving ER for cardiac emergencies throughout San

Luis Obispo County. Named a 100 Top Hospital and 50 Top Cardiac Hospital by Thomson Reuters, French Hospital is recognized nationally for its quality, safety and service. This is a distinction

the community can be proud. The need is now critical to expand the Copeland, Forbes, and Rossi Cardiac Care Center today—it is the hospital’s top priority. The Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite is a state-of-the-art surgical suite that will bring equipment, technology and collaboration together to allow cardiologists, interventional radiologists and surgeons to perform both the newest procedures as well as multiple procedures on the same patient in the one space, without transferring the patient to a second operating room. The first of its kind between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite will use the most advanced technology and equipment, resulting in less invasive surgery techniques, shorter recovery time and fewer follow-up procedures. This project demonstrates FHMC’s commitment to bring the most recent advancements in medicine and health information to our community while raising the level of quality care provided close to home.

Employ ee Caring Circle Donations Support Ne w He ated Patient Food Deliv ery S ys tem For many employees, FHMC is more than where they work everyday. The connection they feel with FHMC’s mission, their patients and their fellow co-workers inspire them to give back to the hospital they care so much about.

Each year, more than one hundred employees contribute

FHMC’s Food Service Department. Past support from the Employee Caring Circle has helped to renovate the French Bistro Café and create the Healing Garden and Outdoor Fitness Zone. Regardless of whether an employee gives five dollars or several thousand dollars to the Employee Caring Circle each year, every contribution represents the dedication that FHMC employees have to our patients and our community.

to the Employee Caring Circle, knowing that the funds will be used to benefit the patients of the hospital. In 2011, funds from the Employee Caring Circle purchased a new Heat on Demand Tray System for the delivery of patient meals. The system, which includes new serving trays, carts and heat activator, greatly increases the quality and temperature of the meals delivered to our patients. The new carts have already made a positive impact on the quality of the patient experience, increasing patient satisfaction and enhancing the work environment for

Le aving a Legacy Loc al Couple Es tablishes a Generous Pl anned Gif t Local couple Bob and Carol Kerwin recently established a planned gift benefiting FHMC. “We have always believed that charitable giving, whether of our time or financial support, is a worthy commitment”, said Bob Kerwin. “This is our home, our community and French Hospital is our hospital of choice.” Once they made the decision to make a gift to FHMC, the Kerwins worked with the Foundation and the Foundation’s planned giving consultant to determine the type of planned gift best suited to their needs. After reviewing their options, the Kerwins chose to make their gift though a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT). A CRUT is an excellent way for donors to generate steady income during their lifetimes. The CRUT is valued annually and the income is adjusted, an effective way to

protect against inflation over time. When the CRUT is completed, the balance of the assets are donated to the selected charity, in this case the FHMC Foundation. The Kerwins have designated their gift to be used for capital Bob and Carol Kerwin. improvements to FHMC and to support the Foundation’s endowment programs. With this gift, the Kerwins have expressed their belief in the quality of care provided at FHMC and have demonstrated how selecting a planned gift can benefit both the donor and the charity.

A La s ting Legac y: Burt W. and V irginia Polin In June 2012, the Foundation received $232,000 from the Burt W. and Virginia Polin Charitable Gift Fund at the San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation. This amount represents 80% of the total gift to be received and was provided to the Foundation as a planned gift from the estate of Burt W. and Virginia Polin. This generous gift will be used for cardiac care and treatment at FHMC. Burt W. Polin was born in San Luis Obispo in 1914 and passed away in 2006. Virginia, his wife of nearly 70 years, passed away in 2010. Burt was a dry land wheat Barbara Bell, Janice Fong Wolf, Sandy Dunn, Jenny Meyers. rancher for more than 40 years on the Carrizo Plains land he inherited from his grandfather. He was also a real estate investor and broker, opening Polin-Truchan Realty. As active members of the community and as true philanthropists, Burt and Virginia established the Burt W. and Virginia Polin Charitable Gift Fund with the Community Foundation in order to insure that their estate would benefit 35 local and national not-for-profit organizations. In all, nearly $3.8 million dollars in charitable gifts were made through this fund,

demonstrating the Polin’s lifelong dedication to the San Luis Obispo community and the causes they loved. FHMC Foundation is honored to be the recipient of this generous gift, which will support the building of the new Advanced Cardiac Hybrid Surgical Suite (see article on page 6), directly benefiting many cardiac patients for years to come.

He arst Cancer Resource Center Receives Generous Estate Gif t In spring 2012, the Foundation received the final portion of a significant planned gift from the estate trust of Cyndey Rae Holcomb. The gift, totaling more than $171,000, will benefit the Hearst Cancer Resource Center at FHMC, which provides a wealth of important services and programs to cancer patients and their families at no charge. 2011 Humanitarian Award Recipients Frank and Betsey Kelton (left and middle) with the award’s namesake, Louis Tedone, M.D. (right).

2011 Louis Tedone, M.D. Humanitarian Award The 2011 Louis Tedone, M.D. Humanitarian Award was presented on August 27, 2011 to Frank and Betsey Kelton at the Foundation’s annual Celebration of Caring Gala. The Award honors the legacy of Dr. Tedone and is presented to individuals who have had a lifetime of dedication to the health and well-being of the San Luis Obispo community. Frank and Betsey Kelton, owners of San Luis Ambulance, have quietly made an imprint on our community through their generosity and compassion for others. Both Frank and Betsey have been extensively involved and held leadership roles with a variety of charitable organizations. They have been instrumental in making the French Cup Golf and Tennis Tournament, which benefits the patients of French Hospital, a great success. Additionally, Frank created the San Luis Ambulance Explorer Program, a unique, volunteer program which provides hands-on experience and scholarships for young adults interested in pursuing a career in the field of medicine.
