NOVEMBER 2011

The Boll Weevil News Team 7B An ‘Unbollweevible’ Start! Our team would like to thank all of the students for their hard work and dedication during the first quarter. The transition to a new environment can be a stressful one. As a group, they have impressed us with their ability to adjust to their new surroundings and act responsibly. We would like to also to thank all the parents/guardians for their patience and involvement in their child’s education. We look forward to continued work with you throughout the year to help your child reach their academic goals. This past quarter students were engaged in a wide range of activities. We have used earlyrelease days to design activities that help students get to know each other and build a team mentality. Our Olweus bullying program is well under way. Through this program we will help students understand what bullying is, how to handle it, and what roles students can play to solve the problem. We have also discussed aspects of good character and how we can live up to them at school and at home. We hope that your child has had a great transition to the Junior High. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or email us at any time.

Please see the back of this newsletter to find out what your child is up to in their core classes and what they will be learning about in the second quarter!

MATH In Math the students are working on solving simple equations. This will lead us into looking at more complex equations this quarter. We will also be learning how to combine like terms, and how to use the distributive property. LANGUAGE ARTS The 2nd quarter started off with an author study on O'Henry. The students were taken with O'Henry and his surprise endings that really took them off guard . We will compare O'Henry and the fictional characters he created in his writings. Next on the agenda will be writing a narrative. The students will go through the writing process to complete the three to four paragraph paper. We will then move on to our poetry unit. In English honors, the students are beginning their research project on homelessness. Each student was given a topic to research, they will then be put in groups to consolidate their information into a technology piece. Each group will then present their project. The students will then begin their O'Henry study. We will then move on to our poetry unit. SCIENCE In science class, we raised Monarch caterpillars. Every day we came in to class we gave them food, measured them, and weighed them. We did that for about 10- 14 days. Most of the caterpillars made their chrysalis, and some of them fell in their chrysalis. A lot of the caterpillars made it to being a butterfly. This was our most successful year ever. We tagged them and let them go as soon as possible so they could begin their journey to Mexico. Now we are studying about living things and using microscopes to learn about cells. SOCIAL STUDIES This coming week we will be finishing our studies on the Roman Empire. During the second quarter we will be working through the Byzantine Empire and then through the Islamic Empires. We will continue to make connections to our world today while mixing up activities in the room to keep students engaged and active. Please encourage your child to prepare for tests and quizzes. There is a lot of difficult vocabulary that takes time to understand. Study guides are provided to students a week in advance and are also uploaded to Edline.
