rinla headquarters

Asked to redesign the RINLA headquarters, I focused in on rerouting the vehicular traffic to be more pedestrian friendly, and to create a larger gathering area. I wanted there to be space for learning and display. The fire pit was proposed to make the area usable at all hours of the day. To keep the heritage of Rhode Island alive, I utilized natural stone and native plantings. All of the trees will be tagged to form an arboretum. I made sure to integrate permeable pavement and many plantings to help with drainage and runoff.

ridot courtyard

_________________________

________________________ ________________________ This enclosed courtyard had a permanent concrete floor, so I analyzed the sun for the prime location of above-ground elements. I wanted to create a flow through the courtyard, with places for employees to eat lunch, sit down and also be secluded. I designed raised stone seating walls and meshed that with tall grass and planters to bring green and height into the space. One of the constraints was we needed to maintain the feel of RIDOT so I incorporated a sidewalk, and the metal sculpture. Part of creating the metal sculpture was having the water fountain, which was intended to dissipate the loud city noises.

the chagall museum

For this project we were given an artist and one of their pieces. Then we were to create a sculpture representing that artist and artwork. From that we were to design a museum for our artist which held the sculpture we created, given a property and existing building. This is the process I went through to complete this project.

________________________ ________________________ The design of this museum was created with curvilinear lines to represent the many lines of the original painting. I wanted the sculpture to be seen from the street and while arriving into the park. The parking lot and path system are accessible to all. There is a lot of vegetation to provide adequate shade and beauty. I added various types of walkways including an allee to guide you to the museum and a path with wildflowers through the park to spark interest.

I decided to design a place for students to rest, relax, and study before making their trek to class. Functionally, people can venture through a sequence of spaces. Aesthetically this garden is enclosed by ten foot hedges so you are away from the busy campus. There are arches and remains of an old stone building to represent the Rhode Island heritage. The reflecting pool is there so people can reflect and contemplate. The tall grass abutting the building protects and brings in color. On top there is a green roof with skylights bringing in natural light. Inside there is a study area with long wooden tables for meetings.

unit shape/design

design

This project started with a photograph of our choice. I used one of my rowing shell. From that we were to replicate it using technical pens on mylar. Then we were to make a design out of it. My design evolved with connection of other rowers, for you are never alone on the water. We then were to zoom in and find a unit shape from our design and create a plan using only right angles.

sketchup model

From our plan we were to make a model out of cardboard, and then to recreate it in SketchUp so we could see what it would look like in real life. To differentiate between the positive and negative space I used elevation, creating a deck area, and a lower elevation, which is forested so when you are on the deck you are able to look into the tree tops. Especially when you are on the glass bridge you are able to be in the tree tops, for they are underneath and around the bridge that is connecting the two raised areas.

________________________ ________________________ The intent of this project was to design a deck onto an existing house. We had to calculate structural aspects , determine materials we should use and produce a cost estimate. In addiction to this model, we were responsible for developing a layout plan, framing plan, lighting plan, and detail sheets.
