BAYLOR UNIVERSITY PRESS March 7, 2012 The Commercial Appeal Mr. Chris Peck, Editor 495 Union Ave. Memphis, TN 38103 SUBJECT: 2012 is Edgar Allan Poe’s Year Dear Mr. Peck: Why is 2012 the year of Edgar Allan Poe? I’ll tell you. Three things come to mind when I think of 2012 and Edgar Allan Poe. The first is a new book, written by Harry Lee Poe, and titled Evermore that exposes a Poe who’s confused by the existence of evil, the truth of justice, and the difficulties of love, beauty and God. The second is a new film that’s coming out in April called “The Raven.” The movie guarantees a gripping ride with dark and morbid parts that honor Poe's work. The third is the series of bizarre reports about a ritual performed on the anniversary of the author’s birth. In 1949, a mysterious man started leaving roses and a half-empty bottle of cognac at the author’s grave. This continued until 2009, when the man stopped visiting. If you are a devoted Poe follower, then you must read this book, see this film and maybe even travel to Poe’s gravesite or to his home and museum (located in Baltimore, Maryland), which is about to go under due to lack of funding. I’ve enclosed my feature story about the three things that make 2012 the year of Edgar Allan Poe. You can contact me any time by phone at 713-444 - 3562 or via email at Kelley_Owens@baylor.edu.
