Hierarchy Exercise

Hierarchy, relegating information based on its importance.

Graphic Design Basic Concepts and Principles "To design is much more than simply to assemble, to order, or even to edit; it is to add value and meaning, to illuminate, to simplify, to clarify, to modify, to dignify, to dramatize, to persuade, and perhaps even to amuse. To design is to transform prose into poetry. Design broadens perception, magnifies experience, and enhances vision. Design is the product of feeling and awareness, of ideas that originate in the mind of the designer and culminate, one hopes, in the mind of the spectator."

Introduction Design may be considered as an instrument of organization. It must perform in response to human needs. Design is an urgent requirement, not a cosmetic addition. Graphic design can save time by presenting information more clearly. It enhances communication, it helps people to understand a given message and accelerates learning. Design is finding the best solution to a problem within the limitations of the problem. Graphic designers communicated and express themselves in four distinct ways.

Each design problem has unique differences and an infinite number of possible visual solutions. The process to generate alternate visual solutions to a problem can be described as follows:

1

The Graphic Design Process

Each design problem has unique differences and an infinite number of possible visual solutions. The process to generate alternate visual solutions to a problem can be described as follows: Definition of needs, criteria and limits of the design problem (problem identification), Production of many preliminary sketches (thumbnails) Refinement of selected sketches (roughs) Analysis of roughs, Selection/Decision, Implementation (and preparation for print).

Visual perception involves a complex interplay of both inborn and learned responses to visual stimuli. The Gestalt laws of perception summarize tendencies that appear to be innate or inherent in our biological heritage in visual art.

Priorities set the functional and visual criteria in communications.

Typography (Paul Rand, FoRm + Content)

Perception and Composition

Figure-Ground

Tendency toward Figure-ground: There is a tendency to interpret visual data as objects against a background, or more precisely, figures against a ground.

Similarity

Similarity facilitates grouping: Objects which resemble one another tend to be seen as grouping together.

Proximity

Proximity facilitates grouping: Objects placed close together tend to form a figure.

After problem identification, the process follows and cyclic pattern from preliminaries through refinement, analysis, and selection to implementation. The process grows by constantly checking backwards. In the design process, the establishment of priorities is essential. Designers must be able to judge and gauge the relative importance of factors as they relate to one another. They need to have a working knowledge of typography, illustration, photography/video, and symbolism.

3

Typography is designing with type, not the designing of type. It involves 1) choosing and using type, and 2) the application of design principles to the setting of type: the arrangement, style, and general appearance of matter printed with type.

Closure

Tendency toward closure: Missing visual information is filled in by the brain. They eye closes the open parts of a figure because it wants to see a whole rather than a collection of unrelated parts.

Continuity

Tendency toward continuity: An interrupted linear figure is similarly filled in by the brain.

Layout: Composition With Type and Images

2

Spacing

Letters and words need to be spaced in a logical, consistent manner to appear optically correct, and achieve optimum readability. In letter spacing there are three standards. Minimum space is used between cursive (oo) letters, or between inclined (xy) letters. Medium space is used between vertical and cursive letters (lo). Between vertical patters (ll) maximum space is used. Good word-spacing is achieved by making all space intervals between words "look" the same. Words must not appear to run together or be spaced so widely as to appear to be separate units. One system is the imagine a lowercase "n" between words. This gives moderate wordspacing.

The Grid

The grid is an underlying structure organizing data. It articulates space according to a pattern of oppositions: vertical and horizontal, top and bottom, rectangular and diagonal, and left and right. If used well it provides perceptual organization, coherence and consistency. tA well conceived grid alone will not ensure effective design. It is an organizational tool, and must be used creatively to maximize communications potential. Grids can help answer compositional questions such as balance, proportion, sequence, unity/harmony, and contrast.

Layout involves the following set of interrelated basic design principles:

Symbolism A symbol is a representation, verbal or visual, of a concept, object, idea, etc., the meaning of which is mutually agreed upon. In graphic design, the effective use of symbolism, combining and relating symbols, enhances the expression of ideas. It creates recognition, association, and meaning.

4

Sequence

Proportion

Contrast

Unity/Harmony

Balance

Sequence is created by directing the viewer, for example, through the use of lines, real or implied, by arranging images in such a way that an edge or a force from one flows into an adjoining one. One dtoes not leave to chance the order in which the viewer perceives the items in the layout.

Good proportion is achieved by deciding on space between image and tip, between tip and the edge of the paper, between columns of type, between typesize, line-length and leading, between different visual elements, etc.

Contrast is achieved through differentiation in size, color, and shape. Giving the same graphic emphasis to several elements will make them compete for attention.

Unity and harmony are achieved by "fitting" all visual elements, type, illustrations, and photos into the style/ mood of the layout.

Balance is created by moving around "optical weights", big and small items, dark and light items, varieties of shapes.

Warp Riders A strange voice within his mind from the glowing orb in his hand spoke of the properties of certain herbs growing wild all across this land

Bound for the black country as the light recedes behind Upon the white odonatar Witch’s vision as their guide

Three witches you shall meet

Be wary and keep watch tonight Make sure your weapon’s at hand along the road to your fate Here in the land where shines no light The first at twilight, the second at night, death can strike you where you stand and the third at the coming of day

Inhaling deeply of the sacred smoke Slipping in between the worlds He beheld a living column of light and it sang to him without a word Three witches you shall meet

There in the ruins borne of darkness Approaching the altar as the arrows begin to fly Beware the tribes of night They take no one alive So stay wary and keep watch tonight Make sure your weapon’s at hand Here in the land where shines no light death can strike you where you stand

upon the path to your fatev The first will love you, the second will deceive you, and the third will show you the way Draw back your arrow and let it fly May your aim be straight and true Remember all that you have been told and there might be some hope for you

Far across the gulf of time he watches all unfold The cursed day draws ever nearer as he has foretold The bearer of the orb awaits the sacred key Into the world anew once more what was will be

Racing through the netherworld outside of time and space He has found a hidden path to pass Three witches you shall meet forbidden gates Body left to rot as the great tidal lock along the road to your fate sets in The first is twilight, the second is night, The cord is cut, the way is shut, the orb goes dim and the third is the coming of day

You will not find us among those who dream of escaping Across the aether we’ve come All is ours for the taking

It was a relic of another time plundered from an ancient tomb wrought by forgotten arts inscribed with cryptic runes They called us fierce marauders Warp riders and guns for hire before the sky cried tears of fire

You don’t age when you live out of time A thousand years in the blink of an eye

Looking out across the void we beheld a fearsome sight Two armadas arrayed before us preparing to unleash their might The Lady kept her promise We heard the sound of a cosmic choir the night the sky cried tears of fire

Secrets of the blackest void known only to the ancients Freedom from the planetoids and the gravity that chains us

This is the hour of the Phoenix when all must be reborn in flame and though they did not know it nothing could remain the same

To make a fold in space and slip between the curves Sacrifice of the sisterhood to do for those they serve To cross a universe in hyper-spatial flight We ride the warp of space into the womb of night

The captain has his vengeance as we drift through a sea of pyres The stars will always remember when the sky cried tears of fire

Ouranos’ daughter, Hermes’ bride Mistress of the Mysteries Upon the ward she rides Navigatrix of the star-seas She makes a fold in space, we slip between the curves Sacrifice of the sisterhood to do for those they serve To cross the Universe in hyper-spatial flight We ride the warp of space into the womb of night You don’t age when you live out of time A thousand years in the blink of an eye

Yonder rides the Archer lost in lawless lands Onward rides the Archer alone in lawless lands Some strange power beckons from beneath the ancient sands No woman will have him No man calls him friend No woman will have him Exiled and outlawed by his only kin

[Instrumental] “Upon the forsaken world of Acheron, the Archer is exiled from his tribe. In his solitary wanderings, he makes a singular discovery within an ancient ruin...” There is a place where the losers win A port of call for desperate men It is known by many names We come and go but it remains Nobody cares, nobody cries if you’re scared or if you die That’s the way it goes You should know... You’re in the place they call the Nightside In the shadows where the killers and the pirates hide Stick around if you think you can survive in the city on the Night-sid Running scared through endless night Too afraid to put up a fight They shackle her wrists It’s too late to resist Scanned for weapons and transmitters Sold at auction to the highest bidder That’s the way it goes Now you know... You can find us on the Night-side In the shadows where the killers and the pirates hide Come around if you think you can survive in the city on the Night-side You can find us on the Night-side In the shadows where the killers and the pirates hide Come around if you think you can survive in the place they call the Night-side [Instrumental]

Through twilit skies he rides Searching the darkened side of the world Into the night Never knowing he has been lead astray Amid the lifeless crags of distant Leeth, Astraea slumbers throught lost aeons, Through lawless lands he flies while Across the burning face of the world great forces converge upon Acheron. Under the suns Her His life begins to slip away awakening fast approaches... A shining angel descends Down from the sky Her coming was foretold
