INITIAL STRUCTURAL STUDIES
PERSPECTIVE
The arts district was once an industrial zone of Los Angeles that represented great harvest in the late 19th Century. As presented with the opportunity to make use of heavy timber wood, the building takes the motif of harvest by employing a tree like structure or a dendriform; henceforth, the project aimed to play a larger part in celebrating the tradition of wood through the expression of the ceiling as another plane for architectural and structural expression.

FACADE STUDIES
First Iteration - GFRC Panel Option
FACADE
STUDIES/ ITERATIONS
Initial iterations of the building facade were concerned with expression of branching through the use of GFRC panels; however, due to some structural and load concerns the idea was scratched and transformed in latter iterations. A Grasshopper script was used to generate these branch projections on the facade, where in vector were projected on surfaces and rotated on various intervals to produce the intended results.

FINAL DESIGN
PAGE 18
Final Design For structural and aesthetic purposes, the final design iteration makes use of a corten steel panel facade that playfully and gesturally carries over the expression of the tree with a perforated screen detailing to allow for indirect lighting to envelope the interior spaces of the building. The facade, henceforth, becomes a graphic for the design’s intent.

The softscape conditions along the site perimeter seem to be scant of any type of greenery thus design of the project allows for the implementation of establishing greeneries along the building perimeter to activate possible social activity and gathering.

The strategy of site placement pushes the building towards the west side of the site boundaries to form a plaza/garden space on the east side and a courtyard on the north. By doing this, pedestrian flows is more direct between third street and the back alley.

Garden/ Plaza space generation is justified on the east and north end of the building perimeter to activate social activity for pedestrians coming from third street or the back alley.

The expression of the tree was playfully carried over into the reading of the facade with a sensitivity to the resiliency and fabrication of the tree as a graphic corten steel metal panel facade system with a perforated copper sheet to allow for natural lighting Other than its natural weathering properties, the corten steel panels have low solar reflectivity and ability to withstand temperatures of 200-400 D Fahrenheit.
