Summer Newslink Full of events for you to enjoy 01204 460989 northernlink@sky.com www.northernlink.co.uk NORTHERN LINK THE OFFICE GLENGARRY CHORLEY OLD ROAD HORWICH BOLTON BL6 6AU

It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that one of our members Peter Driver passed away in the early hours of Sunday 16th June. Peter was a well loved VIP member of the link, with lots of friends made over the last 13 years, many enjoying the walks that Peter organised over on the Fylde Coast where he lived. He was enjoying dancing and being with his friends at the Link Blackpool weekender when he suffered a heart attack, sadly the hospital was unable to revive him. He will be sadly missed by everyone at the Link. Condolences and thoughts go to his family – he leaves 2 daughters and a son. Funeral details will be advised by email. RIP Peter. Hi Everyone Lots of new and exciting things happening in the Link.

We welcome well over 150 Yorkshire members who have joined us and the numbers are growing. Around 40 came to join us at Rivington Barn in May and there are walks and other joint activities planned in the future. You can find details of thaese on our website and in the centre pages of Newslink. Your Northern Link membership entitles you to attend any event that Yorkshire Link organises. The areas covered are Leeds, Wakefield, Huddersfield, Halifax and Addingham all between 40 mins to just over an hour away from Horwich and of course less than half an hour for our Rochdale and Bury members. So why not make a trip and say hello.

Link Members only Group This is a closed group for Link Members Only - completely private. Members and posts are not visible to anyone else on Facebook - only the group. So you can chat and post, private message, load photos and share with other Northern Link and Yorkshire Link members exclusively! Over 200 members are already signed up posting and uploading photos. Why not join them itʼs a great place to keep in touch with Link members, if you havenʼt had an invite its because we havenʼt got your up to date email address – just send a quick email to the office and donʼt forget to like our business page – Northern Link – it all helps to get the Link out there!

Events this Issue Also in this issue: as requested we re-visit the Canberra Club and have a first for Northern Link – a comedy night with one of the North West leading comics – with the usual party and dancing of course. In September we return for a 70ʼs night with a Bowie Tribute – something a lot of you have been asking for. We also have a Ceilidh, Casino Night, Rivington Barn Soul Night and a Hoe Down plus 2 new venues Hindley Hall Golf Club and Egerton House Hotel, Bolton – more than enough to keep you busy this summer…... See you out there Karen

WALKERS PAGE Summer 2013

As we move into summer the number of Members on walks is expected to rise, especially if the weather improves significantly. There is plenty of scope then for meeting new friends as we present a choice of both day and evening walks over the coming months.

For New Members and Guests we have a special little booklet of hints and advice on how to make the most of Link walking, just contact the office, or the walks co-ordinator or ask a walk leader for a FREE copy. Guests will be allowed on a couple of walks but after that they are expected to join Northern Link to continue to enjoy the walks. Sharing transport to Walks: Car sharing helps protect the environment and reduces your travel costs, so if you are able to offer, or wish to share lifts to walks, please contact the Walks Co-ordinators or a Walk Leader and give your contact details, and details of the walks you are interested in.

New Walk Leaders are always needed so if you have a favourite route that you would like to introduce to other Link walkers just let the walk coordinator know. He will gladly help you find your feet as a leader and if you can lead 4 or more walks in a year, you can become a VIP member with FREE membership and FREE entry to discos and dances on your next renewal! Grading for Walks Bird Watch - These are not walks as such, a pair of binoculars is essential and dogs are NOT allowed. Easy - Means easy paths hardly any hills or stiles. Easy to Moderate - Means rougher paths and some low hills and stiles will be encountered. Moderate - Invariably means hilly. With rougher paths and fields. Moderate to Strenuous - Higher hills with rougher terrain some scrambling, rocks and a lot of stiles may be encountered. Strenuous - Very steep or rough terrain including high mountains.

Be Safe, Be Considerate And Respect The Countryside • Keep to the paths across fields/farmland and avoid trampling down the grass or crops you pass through. • When on roads without a footpath, stay in single file and keep to the right-hand side except when approaching right hand bends where you should cross over to the left, returning to the right hand side after the bend. • You will always need waterproofs and extra warm clothing, especially on the more strenuous walks as conditions can change very quickly on the fells. • When parking please park as close to other Link walkers as possible so as not to inconvenience other user of the car park. • Always take your litter home or place it in a proper waste bin, even apple cores and banana skins can take up to 2 years to decompose and attract rats and other rodents who spread serious diseases. Whenever you venture into the countryside please remember:

Don’t drop it bin it! D O G S O N WA L K S There are some walks that dogs will not be allowed on due to Access restrictions. When dogs are allowed on walks they must be kept on a lead at all times. Check the details in the programme, or phone the walk leader for confirmation

CULTURE VULTURES Culture Vultures All Link Culture Vultures events include a meal, so that members get to meet each other socially – not just sit in a line inside the theatre. If possible, we go for a drink afterwards. The meal is extra to the ticket price. Always book at least 2 weeks in advance, or several months in advance for West End type shows such as Les Miserables, Sound of Music, etc. We cannot buy tickets on spec or take provisional bookings. Once you have put your name down, you have to pay for the ticket, even if you cannot come. Theatres do not give us refunds. £1 is added to the face value of each ticket to cover booking fees and other costs which the organisers have to meet. We do not make a profit. For more information, details of extra events and to book online www.linkculturevultures.co.uk Why don’t you register your email address with us - so we can keep you up to date? Send to aptayler@btconnect.com Contacts: Adrian 01695 727555 or aptayler@btconnect.com Margery C 01254 702647 or margery-earnsdale@tiscali.co.uk Gordon 01772 510186 or gordonjbenson@googlemail.com

www.northernlink.co.uk our website has had a complete make-over and is now really easy to navigate and you can tell at a glance what events are on any particular day in the month. If you havenʼt already done so, check it out. You will also notice that our Whatʼs on Mag Newslink is now downloadable – or there is a read on line version. This is the first stage in the move away from printed copy, donʼt worry it will be a while yet before this happens, but from the next issue in November they will no longer be posted out but will be available to pick up at all our events, apart from the walks. Moving towards an online version will allow me to book venues much nearer to the function date giving the Link access to more up market venues at reasonable cost. 14

Welcome to Yorkshire Link

We operate a little differently from our parent organisation Northern Link - organising many of the events ourselves here in Yorkshire. However we do get the best of both worlds having access to everything that Northern Link has to offer and all for one membership fee. We have regular bar nights were many of the events are planned, these are detailed below along with a selection of the type of events that we organise, these are being added to all the time, so please check out our website for an up to date calendar of our events. www.northernlink.co.uk – click on Yorkshire Link

REGULAR EVENTS Leeds Bar Night - Tuesday Come and join us for a relaxed chat and drinks with other singles every Tuesday at 8.45pm in O'Neills Bar ( 26 Great George St Leeds, LS1 3DL) - around 30 people regularly attend. More events are planned at these meetings and can incude Roving Bar nights, Party/dance nights, 10 pin bowling, theatre trips and much more. Your hosts for the Night is Sue or June and Andy feeling a bit nervous about turning up on your own why not give Sue a ring on 01484 862622

Huddersfield Bar Night - Wednesday Thinkin of coming along why not give Sarah or Steve a call on 01484 537312 or email thewalkers10@virginmedia.com The group meet up every Wednesday from 8.45pm onwards at the Head of Steam Pub next to Huddersfield Railway Station. This makes it easy to get to by train from Lancashire or Yorkshire. Parking is available on the side streets or in the Station Car Park. The Pub serves meals and has a large selection of draught and bottle beers, ciders and soft drinks. Every month there is a quiz night where teams are picked by numbers. Each month we have a Friday Supper organised by one of the members. There is bowling every other month. These are just a sample of what activities we have on offer. We look forward to you joining us on Wednesdays. Halifax Bar Night –Sundays at 7.30 check website for dates Halifax pub nights are held on a Sunday evening at Dirty Dick's. It's a nicer venue than the name may imply!! You will find it on Clare Road, HalifaxHX1 2LH...... there is plenty of on-street parking nearby on both Clare Road & New Road. We have the upstairs room to ourselves, so make sure you buy a drink before you come up! In the colder months, there is a cosy log fire.

Please note that, on the last Sunday of every month, we do something different. So, although we don't meet at Dirty Dick's in the evening, we do have a get-together somewhere, sometime. This may be a daytime walk, a meal out, an evening pub crawl, a picnic in the park listening to a brass band, whatever takes our fancy. Details of where we'll be meeting will be advertised locally & on the website, so please keep a look out. If you need to ring the local VIP, my name is Ruth & you can catch me (or the answering machine) on 01422 343368. However, could you please ring any day BUT Tuesdays & Sundays? 15

Addingham Bar Night Every Friday except the first Friday when the venue changes The Swan Addingham 106 Main Street, Addingham, LS29 According to the Good Pub Guide, this is one of the last remaining unspoilt village ale houses in Wharfedale. Its traditional design of four rooms arranged around a central bar is now rarely found. The Swan prides itself on the range and quality of its Real Ales and good home. This is a very cosy pub and a good place to make that first visit! We sit around lovely log fires in the winter, often ending up chatting with the locals too. There is a large car park at the back of the pub, found by turning sharply up a driveway to the left of the pub.

Addingham Bar Night 1st Friday Bar tʼtat Ale and Wine bar (1st Friday of the month) 7 Cunliffe Road, Ilkley LS299DZ (situated just off The Grove -Ilkley's premier shopping street) Bar tʼatʼs (meaning ʻwithout a hatʼ) has taken its name from the song ʻOn Ilkley Moor bar tʼatʼ Phrases from the song, painted around the walls, are an added interest in the bar! This is a lively place with a definite buzz to the atmosphere –any new members would be advised to come to the Swan for their first visit (a rather calmer environment!) Althought he main entrance (pictured opposite) is on Cunliffe road, it is easier to use the back entrance as this leads directly from Ilkleyʼs main car park (free parking in the evenings) Ros your hostess will make sure you have a warm welcome Ros Scott 01943 865164 Email: roslyn.scott@talktalk.net Wakefield Bar Night Bar Night at the Parklands Hotel, 143 Horbury Road, Wakefield, WF2 8TY Last Thursday of the month
