KASHMIR EDUCATION FOUNDATION (Pakistan) Phakowal Project: On 10th April 2003, two local children, Asma & Mohsin laid the Foundation stone of Soan Valley Public School at Phakowal. Mr. Tariq Kayani, a Zila Nazim from Rawalpindi was the chief guest on the occasion. The basement of the school has been completed and work on the ground floor is in progress. Planning for the construction of the Institute of Teacher Education, hostel and hall building is under way. The first instalment of Rs.4.6692 million for construction has been received from the Government. Ms. Nilofer Bakhtiar Advisor to the Prime Minister, Ministry of Women's' Development, Social Development & Special Education is expected to be the chief Guest at the groundbreaking ceremony which is to be held shortly.

10th Board of Trustees Meeting: The 10th Board of Trustees meeting was held on 21st June 2003 at Rawalpindi. Apart from the normal business the meeting also approved the budget for the next financial year.

Visits: A number of visitors from home & abroad were received at the KEF Head Office Rawalpindi, Pearl Valley Public School and Institute of Teacher Education - Rawalakot including trustees from KEF United Kingdom.

KASHMIR EDUCATION FOUNDATION (UK)

Books donated to KEF: We thank Kirklees Council, UK for donating 5076 books on a variety of subjects. The books were delivered to Pearl Valley Public School and the Institute of Teacher Education at Rawalakot in April 2003. We would like to express our appreciation to Mr. Mumtaz who played a leading role in organising this donation.

Fund Raising: Preparations for fund raising functions during the month of August 2003 are in hand. Progress on the Soan Valley Public School, Phakowal largely depends on the success of these functions in the UK. Donations from KEF-UK: An amount of ÂŁ30,000 was donated to KEF-Pakistan for the Soan Valley Public School Phakowal Project. This contribution was handed over to Maj. Gen. Retd. M Rahim Khan (KEF Chairman) by Mr. Ishtiaq Mir (KEF-UK trustee). Mr. Ishtiaq Mir accompanied by Messrs. Bashir Mir & Nisar Smiler visited Pearl Valley Public School, Rawalakot & the project site at Phakowal.

OBE for a KEF-UK Trustee: Our heartiest congratulations to Mr. Muhammad Akram Khan Cheema, Secretary KEF-UK for being awarded an OBE by the UK Government. KEF Pakistan and KEF UK are pleased by this recognition of Mr. Cheema's lifelong services to education. KEF would like to takes this opportunity to thank Mr. Cheema for his valuable advice on various educational aspects of pearl Valley Public School and Institute of Teacher Education.

INSTITUTE OF TEACHER EDUCATION (ITE)RAWALAKOT Postgraduate Diploma Course: The post-graduate Diploma Course is due to commence on 10th July. Twenty-two teacher trainees have been selected for the course. The candidates are from the Rawalakot/Rawalpindi areas.

Training services to other schools: The teaching techniques and standards of PVPS & ITE are now recognised by other schools in the area. KEF has been approached by other local schools for technical help; as part of its professional development plan the ITE and PVPS teaching team held six workshops to advise on quality education teaching skills for the Army Public School in Rawalakot.

Welcome: KEF welcomes Mr. Jamil Ahmad, an experienced teacher, who has now joined the institute. KEF wishes him every success in his new assignment.

PEARL VALLEY PUBLIC SCHOOL (PVPS)

Academic:

Extra coaching for classes viii & ix started in June 2003 to better prepare the pupils for the forthcoming Board examinations. The winter vacation in February 2003 was also utilised for such coaching of senior classes, with particular emphasis on core subjects. by Mrs. Rashida A Khan held a workshop on speed-reading/writing for teachers & class ix. Saturday is now a full working day for classes iii to ix.

Study Trip: Class V went on a four-day study trip to Rawalpindi, Islamabad & Lawrencepur. They visited Rawalpindi Railway station, Ilamabad International Airport, Pakistan's television station, Radio Pakistan & Lawrencepur Textile Mills. The trip also included sightseeing excursions in Islamabad and the surrounding area. The Children thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

Naath & Qirat: A Naath & Qirat competition was held in May, on the eve of Eid Milad-un-Nabi. Selected boys & girls from each class took part. Prizes were awarded to the best Naath Khawans of various categories.

Cricket: A friendly cricket match was played between the teams of PVPS & Army Public School in May. PVPS team won by 10 wickets.

Speeches: Students who enrolled at PVPS as infants are now confident well-groomed teenagers. All had developed an ability to effectively address a large audience. The students enthusiastically prepared & gave speeches on various occasions during the year, including May Day, Fathers' Day, Eid-Millad Day, Teachers' Day, Water Conservation Day, Environment Day and the Pakistan Resolution Day.

Lateral Entry: Over the years the school has vacancies in most classes. This is mainly due to parents' migration. The KEF board of trustees has decided to fill some of these places. Eleven students from other schools were able to qualify and were admitted. Unfortunately the remaining fourteen places could not be filled as the available candidates did not meet the selection criteria.

Affiliation with Federal Board, Islamabad: Pearl Valley Public School has been affiliated with the Federal Board of Intermediate & Secondary Education, Islamabad. This affiliation is a recognition not only of KEF but the staff and students of PVPS as the Board affiliates with institutions outside Islamabad only after rigorous scrutiny of an organisation & its educational standards.

Principal: Former Principal Mr. Mujeeb ur Rehman Qadri had to leave at a short notice for personal reasons. He had joined the school in October 2000. On behalf of all the PVPS children and staff, we thank him for his tireless efforts and devotion to KEF, PVPS & ITE. and wish him every success in the future. Col. (Retd.) Yousaf Azeem has replaced Mr. Qadri as the new Principal. He comes with a rich academic background that includes seven years as Principal of a number of modern quality schools. We wish him success in this challenging assignment where he will have the privilege to lead the PVPS children & staff in their first external examinations next year.

New Resources: Over 5000 books sent by KEF UK have been added to the resources of PVPS & ITE. These books were donated by the Kirklees Council. The Asia Foundation also donated 40 books. The school purchased seven new Pentium IV PCs for its computer Lab to replace obsolete models.

KEF Registered in USA: We are pleased to announce that KEF is now a registered charity in the USA. This outcome was achieved after two years' tireless effort by a friend of KEF, Mr. Aziz Khan. All donations to KEF from the USA are now tax exempt. We would appreciate any suggestions as to how we might best utilize KEF's new charitable status in the US to raise funds.
