This week’s Horoscopes

Weekly Horoscope for 9/13/10-9/19/10

Aries 3/21 – 4/19 You are in the early stage of renewal on Monday, and it is uncomfortable and slow going. As early as Tuesday, you'll feel a lot sprightlier. On Wednesday, bound out of bed early and be the first person in to work. Thursday and Friday find you flexing your muscles, getting things done and polishing your reputation. What you do is almost as important as how you do it. Saturday and Sunday, deliriously happy about your recent successes, you will want to get 11

The Keeper Of the Realms

out a long strip of butcher paper and map out the rest of your life. Taurus 4/20 – 5/20 The intensity of what you're going through speaks volumes about how much this person means to you. You don't necessarily want to publicize how you feel, but people can see it written on your face; talking about it may be a better strategy than pretending to ignore it. A philosophical conversation with an acquaintance on Wednesday will be more useful than you ever expected, and Thursday and Friday find you grounded, curious and happy. And in the mood to travel. You could use a vacation. Get through the weekend -- of power struggles and weird interactions -- dreaming of sandy beaches. Gemini 5/21 – 6/21 Life is laid out like a math problem for you on Monday, and you spend the day trying to determine which are the relevant variables. This calculating mind-set cuts through everything else and will be helpful on Tuesday and Wednesday as well, during a deep, intelligent dialogue with your most brilliant friend (as many insights as you have, preaching is not going to work). Thursday and Friday, your interactions with others are more difficult than usual, especially interactions related to business. Saturday and Sunday, you are submerged in big ideas. Cancer 6/22 – 7/22 It's as if you're on a ship in a storm: One minute there's a chair sitting next to you; the next minute it's all the way across the room. With everything slipping and sliding, Monday isn't the time to get involved 12

The Keeper Of the Realms

with anything long-term and binding. Wait until things settle and you know exactly what you're working with. Tuesday and Wednesday, do something rejuvenating (a trip to the spa? a swim?) and Thursday and Friday, don't worry about doing very little (what's on TV?). Saturday and Sunday offer plenty of opportunities to see friends. Just be careful you don't get into a spat over money. Leo 7/23 – 8/22 A beautiful antique makes its way into your life on Monday -- or maybe it's something else you've been collecting. In any case, Monday is like that: rewarding, slightly self-centered, not super energetic. Then, Tuesday, a comet of love crashes into Earth and the scorching fires of romantic bliss burn brightly through Wednesday night. By Thursday morning, the fires will have died out and you'll be returned to everyday terrain, albeit with a few embers glowing in the corners. Friday, you are preoccupied by others, but this weekend your mind returns to the topic of love. Virgo 8/23 – 9/22 Everyone has different ways of getting through the day, and different ways of seeing things. You are interested in someone else's perspective on Monday, but that doesn't necessarily mean you'll agree with them. Tuesday and Wednesday, your vim and vigor is no match for the inactivity everywhere else, which drags you down a bit, at least until Thursday. Thursday and Friday are bright days filled with hot air balloons and sweet romance. Be open-minded this weekend and you'll learn a fantastic and effortless new way of doing something that's always been a pain in the neck.

13

The Keeper Of the Realms

Libra 9/23 – 10/22 Being good with your money is not just about being selfish, it's also about being smart. Nevertheless, Monday's financial dealings get you thinking about values -- not a bad thing to be thinking about. Tuesday and Wednesday are about feelings and expression; your current projects are challenging you in ways you didn't expect. Thursday, you wake up feeling weird for no discernible reason, and Friday finds you feeling nostalgic about nothing in particular. The weekend offers focus, romance and fun. You and you-know-who are clearly going to take over the world. Scorpio 10/23 – 11/21 You are the sun and your friends are the planets; you are their center of gravity. You'd have it no other way: It's incredibly flattering to be depended upon by so many people who are fabulous in their own right. Tuesday and Wednesday are defined by philosophical questions and the likelihood of being led along by others -- you might find yourself buying something you have little use for -- but Thursday and Friday, you are shrewd, determined and in control. Less can be said for this weekend. There is tension at home, and something someone says may spark an unexpected outburst. But look on the bright side: At least it will clear the air. Sagittarius 11/22 – 12/21 You're in deep processing mode on Monday, and you might feel like being alone. Your subconscious is on overdrive right now, trying to reconcile your internal picture with the big picture outside of you. 14

The Keeper Of the Realms

Your friends may be of some help in sorting all this out on Tuesday and Wednesday -- an exploration of some kind is perfect for the group's energy -- and Thursday and Friday, putting your eyeballs in front of some art is a fine idea. Stimulation is good. Original thinking is good. Saturday and Sunday, you talk so much -- to friends, to strangers, to yourself even -- that your jaw hurts. Capricorn 12/22 – 1/19 Getting organized is the first step. You are in the right mind-set to make some long-term decisions on Monday, but you want to make sure all your ducks are in a row. (Your ducks may not be as orderly as they appear.) Tuesday and Wednesday, discipline is key. You may have sudden pangs of worry that what you thought was possible isn't possible. Pish posh! Ridiculous! You can do anything, as Thursday and Friday attest. Your accomplishments by week's end are impressive, but you've only just begun. This weekend, you clear off the kitchen table and set to work on a number of new plans. Aquarius 1/20 – 2/18 The future of your career has never seemed less clear to you. Monday is a typical Monday, except that you have some major nagging questions in the back of your mind as well. Commiserate with friends on Tuesday to get some perspective. Then, you'll go into Wednesday with a sense of expansiveness, a sense that anything is possible. Let this feeling last. Thursday and Friday, you have too much to do to be abstract and future-thinking, but Saturday and Sunday are great, inspiring days. You'll have all the time in the world to dwell on whatever you like.

15

The Keeper Of the Realms

Pisces 2/19 – 3/20 Legal and financial matters are fuzzy at the start of the week. If you have a transaction to take care of on Monday, make sure you do it in person. Tuesday and Wednesday, you don't have to be as careful -everything goes your way naturally -- but pay extra attention and take care to do the right thing, and you'll make major headway on several plans you once thought impossible. Thursday and Friday, a friend is in need of some help and might not know how to ask for it. Anticipate this. Saturday and Sunday, you're in a giving mood as well. Your advice is brilliant, so hand it out generously.

Chinese Astrology: Year of the Tiger

Rat Outlook for 2010 Rat 1900, 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008 Rat Overview There will be times you think 2010 is a good year, and others when you will wonder if the opposite is true. On a positive note, the Metal year produces good fortune for you. The Tiger, on the other hand, is a big cat, and not exactly a friend to the Rat. Two important keys to 17

The Keeper Of the Realms

your success are to be nimble and not to pick fights you have a chance of losing. The Tiger has claws, and defeat is not likely to be pretty. There will be plenty of action this year, which should suit you just fine. Scale back your endeavors in the first six months of the year and make your most concerted efforts during the next six good months. This formula should leave your life's balance sheet in the black at year's end. Rat Rating 51% (6 favorable and 6 unfavorable months) Rat Career The Rat is likely to experience at least one major change in career path or professional role this year. The best strategy is to cultivate flexibility. If changes are not of your choosing, you'll be best positioned to take advantage of new opportunities by relinquishing some control and being your most adaptable self. Your independent nature could be a disadvantage if you don't pay close attention to developments in your field. It is a good time to monitor game-changing trends. The Rat is known for tenacity and resourcefulness, traits that will serve you well. If you are willing to adjust your plans accordingly, this Tiger year could tangibly improve your career prospects in the second half. Rat Relationships Loving family relationships are featured prominently in this Tiger year. The Rat may be called upon to provide support to an older relative, thus enhancing a close, and mutually rewarding bond. You shouldn't hesitate to call on family first for assistance or advice. Attend as many events and gatherings of the most important people in your life as possible, or better yet, plan some yourself. In fact, it is 18

The Keeper Of the Realms

advisable to go out of your way to create the environment for happy, memorable occasions to be enjoyed. Romance is not to be neglected either. Proactively expanding your social circle and interests will connect you with one or more exciting new love prospects. Rat Health Relaxation will be valuable to your health this year. The Rat has a tendency to never fully unwind, even when participating in so-called leisure activities. This tendency will be even more exaggerated by the Tiger, so your overall well-being will depend on you making a real effort to find true outlets for stress. Some of your hobbies could be unwitting sources of pressure anxiety. Try some non-competitive physical endeavors and practice those that make you feel balanced and at peace instead of simply posing a new set of standards for achievement. Rat Wealth As ingenious as the Rat can be financially, the Tiger year does not bode well for any risky venture. The Tiger's hallmark is leaping before looking, so you should be vigilant so as not to get caught up in clever but uncertain schemes. Things will not always be what they appear this year, and that is especially true in money matters. It is not to say you should make no investments or major purchases this year; however, due diligence erring on the side of caution and conservatism could avert serious losses.

Ox Outlook for 2010 Ox 1901, 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009 19

The Keeper Of the Realms

Ox Overview You could have a measure of good luck this year as the Tiger seems to bring some to everyone, and Metal is the Ox's most favorable element. On the other hand, you might as well be prepared to face some challenges. Tiger style is not conducive to your peace of mind. This is not the time to march forth boldly into battle heedless of the consequences. You will have to pick your fights and show much restraint if you want to be successful overall. You are only likely to have two great months this year; make sure to take advantage of the opportunities they provide. The rest of the time you need to tone down your efforts and press ahead carefully with ongoing projects. Ox Rating 29% (2 favorable and 10 unfavorable months) Ox Career A year of transition and unexpected changes in career prospects could unnerve the Ox in 2010, especially after what have likely been two years of steady progress. The Tiger could present great long-term opportunities in the Ox's profession, but you may not readily see it this way unless you are willing to reconsider well-laid plans. It is not a good time to push ahead too boldly. Rather, focus on maintaining gains already made and strengthening your professional reputation. Better yet, making yourself more valuable in your field by diversifying your skill set and pursuing additional accreditations or qualifications will be fruitful endeavors this year. Self-improvement will position you for future successes. Ox Relationships While generally a quiet year, Oxen will enjoy a number of memorable occasions with 20

The Keeper Of the Realms

loved ones and develop valuable new contacts. Happiness could be focused around a younger person who is a source of pride and comfort. A recent acquaintance could become more important in your life, and development of this relationship over the year could have powerful meaning for you. Unattached Oxen could find a deeper love in a blossoming friendship. Family relationships should be a reliable source of support and encouragement when things don't go as smoothly as you would like. Try to be especially straightforward and open with your feelings and not let small problems fester or escalate this year. Ox Health Burnout is a risk this year if your reaction to setbacks tends to be simply working harder. For your mental health it's advisable to take up some hobby or interest that is completely new to you and that doesn't directly relate to your current goals or responsibilities. The challenge of mastering a new skill is likely to be a healthy way to refocus some of your energies that may be frustrated over the course of the year. Furthermore, it is likely that you will discover you have some abilities you were unaware of, which will boost your self-esteem and personal outlook for the future. Ox Wealth Your cautious approach will serve you well in 2010; although, you may be uncharacteristically tempted by fast-moving forces to take unusual risks. Do not let yourself be pushed or pressured to follow the crowd in financial matters. If everyone else suffers a big loss, so be it. There may be lucrative opportunities where wealth is concerned, and you should certainly investigate and take advantage of them. But, this is no time to throw caution to the wind. Rely on your methodical and patient style when making money decisions this year. 21

The Keeper Of the Realms

Tiger Outlook for 2010 Tiger 1902, 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 Tiger Overview Your year has arrived, and you are likely to find it more comfortable than most. That does not mean, however, it will be more successful. This could be a case of too much of a good thing. Yes, you are lucky. Yes, you enjoy taking a risk. You can bet the year's ambiance will encourage extremes even beyond your natural inclinations. In other words, you are vulnerable to suffer from overdoing it, from living on the edge and falling off it. You are going to have a few splendid successes in 2010. On the other hand, do not be surprised if your failures are even more spectacular. Self-control wins the day.

Tiger Rating 41% (3 favorable, 1 neutral and 8 unfavorable months) Tiger Career Tiger's natural leadership and charisma are enhanced this year, and you may find your ideas and initiatives get more traction than usual. It feels great to be listened to and treated like the boss. The only downside could come if you let this deference go to your head and fail to seek out others' expertise and experiential wisdom. Coworkers are 22

The Keeper Of the Realms

not likely to reign you in, so you need to be extra vigilant to make wise, considered decisions and go out of your way to consult with respected peers and mentors. This year will present opportunities of your wildest imaginings, but you will need abundant self-discipline in order to make them realities. Success is in your reach, but beware of pride and overconfidence; it is not a foregone conclusion. Tiger Relationships Personal relationships are likely to be Tiger's strongest suit this year. Your active and rewarding social agenda could be the envy of most others; expect to have fun in 2010. But even this pales in light of your prospects for love. Romantic passion is likely to be at its highest mid-year, which is also a very lucky time for a Tiger to marry. Domesticity could hold much of your attention this year. You may get special satisfaction in 2010 from time spent on home front matters and family relationships. If you are single, important friendships should develop pleasingly over the course of the year and become a central focus of your life. In the spring, you could meet someone who will play a key role in your life, possibly as part of a celebratory event. Tiger Health Tigers could suffer the effects of exhaustion this year without even realizing they have overexerted themselves. It is in your best interest to take extra precautions to ensure you get enough sleep, and to practice healthful exercise and good nutrition habits to allow your body to recover from overindulgences, of which there may be many. Intensity and high stakes in almost every area of your life make you feel alive, but place stress on your overall health, something with which you may have to cope later. Let 2010 be the year you learn to love green foods. If you have experienced mental setbacks in recent 23

The Keeper Of the Realms

years, you should benefit psychologically from new beginnings now. Tiger Wealth This year is likely to bring an increase in the Tiger's wealth. Money could flow from unanticipated sources, and income is likely to increase. You will be best served financially by setting aside windfalls as savings. The temptation and, possibly, social pressure to consume your new profits could be strong. However, it would be a mistake to assume money will be here to stay. Maximize your financial opportunities, but don't lose your head. Consider making large purchases at a discount and hunt for bargains, even if you can afford retail markups. Wisely shore up your position for the long term.

Rabbit Outlook for 2010 Rabbit 1903, 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999 Rabbit Overview The pace should pick up this year for Rabbit, and it may be a faster one than you would like it to be. At times, especially during the month of the Rooster, it may be almost unbearably hectic. Still, the Tiger is your complementary sign, and a friend who will liberally bestow Luck upon you. You can expect most months to be favorable to you, with opportunities to make big gains in almost every area of your life. So, do not let difficulties get you down for long. If you can resist this Rabbit tendency to discouragement, you will find in retrospect that 2010 has been a very rewarding year for you.

24

The Keeper Of the Realms

Rabbit Rating 61% (9 favorable and 3 unfavorable months) Rabbit Career The Rabbit may tend to prefer security and stability to uncertainty and change, but in the Year of the Tiger, you will need to embrace the unknown to achieve your potential. Now, more than ever, bold new initiatives of your own undertaking are likely to be rewarded. You may be pushed out of your comfort zone on the job, and if you are not, you must push yourself to take on new challenges. Demonstrate your versatile nature to impress those who may only know one side of your many talents. Act early in the year on your ideas for a project or entrepreneurial venture. Don't forget that next year will be a Rabbit year, and the groundwork laid now will set your stage for 2011, when your own sign will rule. Rabbit Relationships As a Rabbit, you probably enjoy productive relationships with your peers and family members. This year will be no exception, and you will encounter many opportunities to expand your network of interesting and helpful people. However, be cautious of expressing uncharacteristic irritability with those close to you. While the domestic front should be a source of joy, it may seem like more work than usual to maintain a favorable climate. A hectic schedule coupled with a demanding home life could take a toll on your nerves and cause you to lash out at loved ones. This could threaten to undermine even solid relationships. A random meeting later in the year could be life-changing. If you are single, it could mean a new love. Rabbit Health Heightened activity means you should be a bit careful with your 25

The Keeper Of the Realms

health. If you find yourself overworked, take a step back and focus on meditation or a soothing from of exercise such as Yoga. Remember, stress tends to cause an increase in stomach acid so it is wise for you to avoid too many fried foods and caffeine. It is a good practice to start the year with a checkup followed by two good decisions a day. From there, six months down the road you can effectively measure your progress and ability to stay healthy throughout 2010. Rabbit Wealth Extra vigilance is called for in money matters in 2010. The Year of the Tiger poses financial opportunities, and particularly chances for the alert Rabbit to make wise, well-considered purchases. However, along with profitable opportunities, there will be temptations to engage in ventures that are too good to be true, or uncertain at best. Fortunately, the Rabbit tends to have the good sense and wits to perceive the difference. For your fiscal health, you want to keep both those traits about you this year.

Dragon Outlook for 2010 Dragon 1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000 Dragon Overview The Tiger does not take a back seat to the Dragon when it comes to being outrageous. It could be a spectacular year for this high flying duo. On the other hand Metal is unlucky for the Dragon and, therefore, you. There are thus likely to be a few times you will crash and burn. The key is not to get too caught up in the moment. Be 26

The Keeper Of the Realms

thoughtful and avoid unnecessary risk. You can't beat the Tiger this year, but joining forces will pay off. If you can bring yourself to exhibit a little self control, the year 2010 could be a most rewarding one indeed. Regardless of the outcomes, you will no doubt have a most exciting time. So enjoy yourself and move out smartly during the nine favorable months, and tread lightly in the other three.

Dragon Rating 63% (9 favorable and 3 unfavorable months) Dragon Career The Tiger ushers in a year of uncertainty and rapidly changing conditions, circumstances in which the Dragon is uniquely suited to thrive where others may stumble. Professionally, Dragons who felt their progress was stymied during the last Ox year will find abundant new prospects to explore. A new position or role could be promising, and if you are seeking a change, you are best poised to pursue opportunities early in the year or in the fall. When taking action on the career front, however, you are advised to do so in close collaboration with colleagues or superiors. Your endeavors are more likely to have the desired outcome when you gain support early instead of going it alone. Seek valuable insights from respected leaders in your field.

Dragon Relationships It will be important to the Dragon's health to deliberately set aside time for extracurricular pursuits that will allow you to unwind and release tension. You may need to schedule exercise and personal care activities as if they were important appointments. If you wait for free 27

The Keeper Of the Realms

time to take care of yourself, it will not happen. Mentally, you could benefit from pushing yourself or taking new risks, even in your leisurely pursuits. You may be surprised at how quickly you master a new skill. Activities that boost your confidence will improve your psychological fitness to cope with the challenges of this Tiger Year. Dragon Health The best thing Dragons can do for their health in a Tiger year is curb excess. Whether it is overindulgence, too much stress, or too little sleep, your tendency will be to extremes that can have a damaging impact on your health. Some vigilance here should help prevent illness in the short and long term. Even if you can't change your habits, don't discount the importance of frequent exercise and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables as moderating factors. From a mental health standpoint, it will serve you well this year to be very open with trusted confidantes. Don't bottle up your feelings; things will seem more manageable when you talk them through. Dragon Wealth Good financial prospects should not prevent the Dragon from watching pennies in the Year of the Tiger. Your fortune could be increasing, but money will go out faster than it comes in without some deliberate restraint. Lucrative opportunities should present themselves, but guard against greed. Don't push your luck on risky investments. You may not feel the need for thrift this year, but an ambitious savings plan could bolster your long term prospects. Resist unnecessary luxuries that may seem particularly enticing to you, and this year of plenty could go a long way to building your fortune.

Snake Outlook for 2010 28

The Keeper Of the Realms

Snake 1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001 Snake Overview If you are a typical Snake, you can be quite at home with tending your own wounds and being your own best friend. That ability could be very useful during a year containing 10 unfavorable months. Neither the pace nor style of 2010 is likely to be conducive to your peace of mind. Fortunately Snake's natural element, Fire, has the ability to control Metal, this year's ruling element. This should allow you to receive your fair share of that famous Tiger luck. The key is to be very Snake-like. Lay low, wait for opportunities and strike quickly. Do not measure the year in the number of your successes. Rather, focus on one or two big wins. Pick your battles carefully and exit the scene at the first sign of trouble.

Snake Rating 38% (2 favorable and 10 unfavorable months) Snake Career Change can be uncomfortable for the Snake, but if you recognize transformations can ultimately be in your favor, it will be easier to adapt. Tiger's influence is not likely to help things go your way career-wise in the short-term. Fortunately, you probably possess keen analytical ability and an uncanny sense of timing. There may be only a few moments of opportunity, but stay alert and be ready to take full advantage so you can make them count. In the meantime, direct your energies to areas in which you have the most expertise. It is advisable to expand skill sets you perceive will become more valuable as your 29

work environment evolves, as you can expect it to rapidly. Be diplomatic; you can't afford personal conflict on the job. Snake Relationships Personal relationships are now likely to be a greater source of comfort and support for Snakes than in a typical year. You probably tend to be independent and usually trust your own judgment above all. However, giving added weight to the advice and wisdom of others in this Tiger year could prove extremely worthwhile. Relations with family and friends are likely to be smooth and joyful, and 2010 should be filled with many opportunities for happy gatherings of loved ones. If you have been lonely, or seeking a partner, taking the initiative is rewarded. It is a favorable time for you to put yourself into new environments and introduce yourself in new social circles. You should be well-received, but you need to make the first move. Snake Health Rapid change and uncertainty can take its toll on Snake's nerves in 2010. It will be important for you to attend carefully to both your physical and mental health. Not only is this essential to your well-being but also for you to function at the level required to meet the Tiger's challenges. You may feel pressure to abandon leisure activities you enjoy to meet many stressful demands, but this would be a mistake. In fact, you should enjoin friends to participate with you in activities that bring you balance, even if you are accustomed to doing them alone. Companionship and camaraderie in your extracurricular pursuits will help you to stick to them and also bring you additional satisfaction. Snake Wealth Major expenses could present themselves this year, particularly related 30

to dwellings or vehicles. The Snake is typically cautious and deliberate with finances, so if you stick to this approach, unexpected outflows of cash should not be disastrous. The year of the Tiger is not a good time to engage in any uncertain investment schemes, and you should pay close attention to the details of any financial agreements into which you enter. Be conservative and don't rely on luck or chance where money is concerned. Read the fine print and make sure you understand all the implications of commitments you make to avoid unpleasant surprises. Horse Outlook for 2010 Horse 1906, 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 Horse Overview The Horse will experience a more favorable year than the other signs, the only exception being the Dog. The year's ruling element, Metal, is not one of your best and will likely temper what would otherwise be an outstanding year, to just a very good year on all fronts. You are poised to achieve gains in many areas of your life and have a great time doing it. The Horse is forecast to have an entire year without even one unfavorable month in 2010, a very uncommon phenomenon. This is not a time to hold back or sit on the sidelines. Rather, you should proceed through the year at a gallop. You may not win every race, but there will be many times you do reach the finish line first. Keep in mind the Tiger's influence tends to be a bit reckless. Occasionally tighten up on the reins and be more careful. Horse Rating 74% (12 favorable months)

Horse Career The Horse is well positioned for a year of marked progress in reaching professional goals. The Tiger will be ushering in change and uncertainty. For a typical Horse, your love of variety and diversity already gives you a natural advantage over your competitors. If you are in a in a career you enjoy, the unpredictable challenges should be exhilarating. If you don't love your industry, seek new employment as early as possible, and you'll likely make a quick, rewarding transition. Horse sign people are often blessed with a deeply held, personal confidence that they will succeed. This belief in yourself will also benefit you, but don't think you have failed if you don't accomplish every goal you set for 2010. The year is about being proactive and setting the stage for ultimate achievements. You can expect to see more of those next year. Horse Relationships The Horse's interactions this year should be very rewarding. You may find yourself highly in-demand with friends and acquaintances, and your social calendar is bound to conflict at some point with your responsibilities. As a Horse sign person, you know how to enjoy a raucous time, but in the end you are not likely to risk your true objectives. Don't let the impetuous Tiger lure you too far down the path of temptation. In your personal life, you may find yourself attending more than usual to domestic matters or family obligations, and actually enjoying it. This year should be more conducive to romance than recent years, and 2010 is an auspicious year for engagement or marriage. If you have been single or lonely, you are almost sure to find someone to feel passionate about, especially during the spring and summer months.

Horse Health Horses often get away with neglecting their health for long periods without experiencing negative consequences. While this may seem like a blessing, it can actually be a disadvantage because you learn to take your body for granted. As strong and resilient as you might be, you cannot endure continuous abuse without paying a price. Furthermore, those life-enhancing habits like regular exercise and nutritious foods only get harder to adopt with time. In such a busy and active year as this one, it is almost certain your brain will be getting all the exercise it can handle. It will actually improve your performance in all areas of your life if you treat your body as well as you treat your mind. Horse Wealth Finances could be the weakest area for Horses this year. You may be deluded by illusions of grandeur when you receive a raise, or a large sum of money. The Tiger may influence you to spend it, but excessive luxury purchases are not advised. You are likely to face unexpected expenses, and your security will be improved if you set aside as much of your money as possible in savings and secure investments so you can cover the additional outflows without worry. You will fare well by making a habit of living below your means. Needless to say, it is not a good time for gambling or risk; don't trust your luck where money is concerned.

Goat Outlook for 2010 33

The Keeper Of the Realms

Goat 1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 Goat Overview If you encountered more difficulties than usual last year, and most Goats probably did, the Year of the Tiger should provide more opportunities. As indicated by the relatively small number of favorable months, however, you are still likely to face challenges in 2010. It may not be an easy year, but the key to your success will be to maintain your composure and not get caught up in the excitement of the moment. Focus on cooperative endeavors and cultivate friends and associates carefully. The Tiger has claws, so run, don't walk away from arguments and unpleasantness that have no good prospects for resolution. Align yourself with the Tiger, not against it. Then make your moves smartly during those four favorable months. Goat Rating 42% (4 favorable, 1 neutral and 7 unfavorable months) Goat Career It is a near certainty that 2010 will bring Goats at least one dramatic change in their career, whether a new role in your position, or a different job altogether. Whether this change is voluntary or discouraging, you should take heart in that these transitions hold a wealth of potential for you. Even if your new job isn't what you expect, or is somewhat disappointing, it is likely it will very quickly lead to more desirable opportunities you couldn't have anticipated. Do your best in any situation, work diligently to develop your skills, and take responsibilities seriously, even if they feel beneath you at times. Take heart, you will receive ample recognition next year for the dues you pay now. 34

The Keeper Of the Realms

Goat Relationships The active Tiger will be felt keenly in your social life. It could be a year in which you meet a great many people, more than a few of whom may play a significant role in your future. So, while all your socializing may feel like play, it is actually a very important activity for you. That said, the Tiger's influence will encourage you to party like there is no tomorrow. You may be easily distracted from tasks, especially the less pleasant ones, so you will need to be disciplined and make sure your playtime does not interfere with your other goals. Personal relationships should flourish this year, though change will be ever-present. You can expect a marked transition in at least one significant relationship, whether it is a separation, or on the contrary, a deeper commitment. Goat Health Goats should brace themselves for a very busy year in all arenas. Therefore, it will be important to take care of your body and mind to keep from burning out. Schedule those things you do to relax and feel good about yourself and be proactive about managing your time, or those important activities will quickly be pushed to the wayside. Of course, busy times are those in which you tend to skimp on yourself, exercise routines, and fresh foods. In fact, you would do well to strive for the opposite. Your health in 2010 is essential to your continued success, so address it at least as seriously as any of your other endeavors. Goat Wealth Whatever your income, this year is likely to involve some major financial outlays. This is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you are spending on long-term investments like a home, education, or 35

expanding a profitable business. Make sure you are not spending on speculative ventures. If it feels like a gamble, keep your money as far away from it as possible. You may need to deny yourself some of the niceties you are accustomed to in order to finance your big-picture plans. Don't be bitter about this; you will thank yourself later for your frugality now.

Monkey Outlook for 2010 Monkey 1908, 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 Monkey Overview Alas, every 12 years your nemesis, the Tiger, shows up to spoil your party. Still, it is a Metal year, which means you are in your element. There are even two favorable months for you to go out and challenge the world. There is one key for the Monkey to remember in order to make it through unscathed: there are no innocent games. Not now. The Tiger has claws. Every time you play the trickster you set yourself up for some ugly scratches. Be direct, stick to the tried and true, and avoid tempting fate to save yourself a lot of unnecessary headaches. You also want to steer clear of head-on confrontations. The Tiger does not like being challenged. Monkey Rating 32% (2 favorable, 1 neutral and 9 unfavorable months) Monkey Career Career changes are likely this year, and your professional life may 36

The Keeper Of the Realms

seem erratic, with a lot of ups and downs. The Tiger has a big hand -or paw -- in this and is no friend to the Monkey, so proceed with caution. The Monkey's typical attitude is that their intelligence will win the day. This year, brawn will trump brains, so trying to outwit your superiors could backfire. It may be difficult for you, but you could be best served by respecting power on the job. Do your best to stay in line and not provoke authority. Channel your ingenuity into getting the job done in the traditional way instead of finding ways to cut corners and do end runs around obstacles. Sometimes the shortcuts you invent are your biggest strength, but this year they might be your downfall. Monkey Relationships Relationships have the potential to be the Monkey's strong suit in this challenging year, and you are likely to be continuously surrounded by friends and admirers. This should help soothe your ego where other forces are keeping your ambitions in check. However, there are things to be on guard for. Your vibrant social life may leave those closest to you feeling neglected or thinking your feelings for them are superficial. Go out of your way to pay special attention to the people you care most about. It is also important to avoid hurting others' feelings. Your jokes are often highly entertaining to a crowd, but make sure they are not humiliating or cruel. This is not a good year to make enemies. Monkey Health Don't take chances with your health in 2010. You are likely to accumulate nervous energy built up from frustration over the year and having to swallow your pride. These negative feelings can affect you physically, causing fatigue, depression, or even disease. To prevent the deterioration of your health, make sure you have physical 37

The Keeper Of the Realms

outlets for pent-up aggression. Opt for a vigorous exercise routine such as running, or a strenuous team sport that leaves you spent. Challenging yourself physically will help keep your body strong, and you will also find your mind to be more at ease. Monkey Wealth Exercise care in financial planning this year. Income and expenses are likely to be volatile and unpredictable. A dramatic change in one or more of your life circumstances is likely to strain your budget. Avoid the pitfall of conspicuous spending to enhance your social position. Chances are you won't be able to compete, and the results could be disastrous to your bottom line. You should benefit from an ultra-conservative approach to saving. By all means, avoid clever schemes you hear of, or even invent yourself, that are supposed to get you rich fast. You could easily suffer a loss.

Rooster Outlook for 2010 Rooster 1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005 Rooster Overview Hopefully you gave it your best shot and scored some outstanding successes last year. The Tiger, unfortunately, has a low tolerance for the Rooster. If you are a typical one, you need to remember one thing: The Tiger has claws. Your direct, no nonsense approach is likely to lead to your getting scratched. The same goes for arguments. Your managerial talents should serve you well when it comes to steering a course that avoids pitfalls. The diplomatic approach, 38

The Keeper Of the Realms

regardless how foreign to your style, needs to be your favored one. Save your best efforts and big occasions for your two, favorable months. The ruling element, Metal, should help you achieve one or two noteworthy successes. Rooster Rating 39% (2 favorable, 1 neutral and 9 unfavorable months) Rooster Career Roosters may feel slighted on the job this year, especially if you don't receive as much recognition as you feel you have earned, or are passed over for a promotion or award you expected. Unjust as this may be, resist the temptation to escalate the issue. While you are certainly capable of making your dissatisfaction known, career prospects could suffer on that account. Restraint should be your new motto in 2010. Don't let your productivity suffer to punish your superiors or your team if you feel they've let you down. Be diligent and patient in your work, recalling your many past achievements. If you follow this strategy, you are likely to finish the year with enhanced respect and trust from your colleagues. Rooster Relationships Personal relationships could flourish for Roosters this year, as 2010 is poised to be an active time, with many social engagements and opportunities to connect, or re-connect with friends and family. Take every opportunity to develop new and interesting contacts by taking the initiative to enter unfamiliar circles. Be wary, however, of a tendency to be too demanding of others. You'll benefit from adopting an easy-going attitude where social activities are concerned and sharing the spotlight. Relax and let others run the show when appropriate. You probably have the ability to push just the right 39

The Keeper Of the Realms

buttons to get anyone's attention. Use this knack to cultivate positive, not negative interactions. Rooster Health It is an excellent year for Roosters to place a new and special focus on their own health. If you have put more effort into your wardrobe than your physical fitness recently, this is definitely the time to turn over a new leaf. Whether you are an avid athlete or a couch potato, Roosters will benefit in body and spirit from pushing themselves to be stronger than they were before. That could mean setting a goal to beat your personal record, or even just to walk a little farther every day. The key is to make progress against your own record. Keep track and watch your progress. Physical self-improvement could be the most important thing you do this year, and it will impact every area of your life. Rooster Wealth Your financial situation may not live up to expectations. You would be well-advised to take measures to stretch your budget farther. Figure out your largest expenses and find ways to shrink them. It would be a mistake to make any investments you expect to yield high returns quickly. The Tiger year breeds unpredictability and danger, so you are best off saving your pennies in traditional and safe ways. You may be tempted to be too generous with what you have for your own good, especially if you encounter a windfall. Show your generosity in other ways; monetarily, you need to look out for your own security.

Dog Outlook for 2010

The Keeper Of the Realms

Dog 1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 Dog Overview It doesn't get much better than this. The Year of the Tiger may as well be The Year of the Dog, as you're not likely to have a more fortunate year, even when your own sign is ruling. In fact, it is the Dog who can expect the most from 2010. Perhaps you are a typical, cautious, unassuming, nostalgic Dog sign person. Forget all that! This is a year to make your mark on the world. The biggest mistake you can make is to sit on the sidelines. There will be plenty of action, and you need to be right in the middle of it. Ride the Tiger to fame and glory. Do the most outrageous thing you have contemplated but could not bring yourself to initiate. There is not a better time in sight, especially if you require a little luck to succeed. Now is also when you want to plan that momentous occasion celebrating the next phase of your life. Dog Rating 78% (12 favorable months)

Dog Career Dogs can expect to see some visible changes on the career front. While nature of the transition is unpredictable, be confident. Unlike most other signs, your friend the Tiger is looking out for you. If you are changing jobs, you are likely to soon find yourself in a position where you feel your work has more meaning and is a source of pride. You can also expect rewarding teamwork and collaboration to be central to your job this year. If you remain in the same position, you stand likely to be promoted and reap the benefits of your hard work that may have seemed thankless in the past. Though your career path 41

may seem at times uncertain or changeable, don't let this hinder your initiative. You will have greater clarity by year's end. Dog Relationships Your family will bring you much joy and support in the coming year. There will be more occasions than usual for family celebrations, and you may find yourself particularly involved in the lives of younger family members or children. These interactions will be among your greatest sources of pride and happiness this year. A swirl of activity could expose you to intriguing new contacts, and you may feel less apprehensive of strangers than in the past. If you are in a relationship, you may find yourself falling in love with your partner all over again. It is an excellent time for fresh starts, and any new romantic relationship is likely to start off on firm ground. If you are considering marriage or renewing a commitment, this would be a very auspicious year for starting a new life. Dog Health Any activity that bolsters your confidence and banishes inner doubt will be beneficial to your well-being this year. Since you have so much opportunity in front of you, it would be wise to keep your body and mind in top shape to best take advantage. Rapid change and uncertainty can be stressful for a Dog, even when the results are good. Meditation can help you cultivate a sense of stability in the maelstrom. Above all, maintaining your positive outlook is important to every area of your life. If you find yourself suffering from anxiety or frazzled nerves, you may find long walks, vigorous exercise, and a balanced, nutritious diet are your best allies for good health. Dog Wealth Finances could be your weakest area this year. That is not to say your 42

The Keeper Of the Realms

prospects are gloomy, only that where money matters are concerned, you could be prone to large fluctuations. Your best strategy is to save as much as you can so you can afford some major expenses that are almost certain to present themselves. Do some soul-searching around your budget and determine the things that are important to you, and try to minimize those expenses you deem less so. That way you can finance your big plans without the burden of guilt or worry. The worst thing to do would be to finance them through a speculative venture.

Pig Outlook for 2010 Pig 1911, 1923, 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 Pig Overview As a Pig sign person you are the fortunate recipient of not only that famous Tiger luck but also of Metal's benefit, as it is the element most favorable to you. This is amply demonstrated by your looking forward to so many, positive months in 2010. Even your nemesis, the Snake, can only bring you a neutral one. It is likely to be an exciting time, even a little wild. One key to your success is maintaining self control. You can bet there will be occasions where it will not be easy. Enjoy the ride but do not let yourself get caught up in all the drama. Odds are you cannot keep up with the Tiger the whole way through. Conserve your energy and be ready to hop on your ship when it sails. Pig Rating 73% (11 favorable and 1 neutral month) 43

The Keeper Of the Realms

Pig Career A shift in workplace dynamics this year should ultimately be to your liking. Whether it is a change in position or responsibilities, odds are your career is in for a shake up. Pigs have little to fear from the Year of the Tiger; the Tiger is your friend and has your interests at heart. What you can expect by year's end is more autonomy on the job. That could mean increased flexibility in work hours to afford you a better work-life balance, as well as an opportunity to exercise more creativity. You are also likely to be recognized by your superiors or colleagues for having gone to unusual lengths. Don't underestimate yourself. Your flexibility and resourcefulness are likely to prove their value this year. Collaboration should play a significant role in your professional life in 2010, and initiatives you take as part of a team are likely to be successful. Pig Relationships Family and domestic matters are likely to occupy much of your time and energy this year. You may find yourself in a caretaker role for an older person, but instead of being a burden, you may actually find you get even more than you give in this situation. So give of yourself freely; the relationship will be mutually rewarding. The year will be an active one, with no shortage of celebrations and memorable gatherings of loved ones. Most of your relationships will be rewarding, and it is advisable to cultivate new friendships. Your long standing ones are probably secure and may even benefit from the diversity new perspectives bring. If you are single, it is a particularly good year to meet a stable, loving partner. Don't pass up any opportunity to expand your social horizons. Pig Health 44

The Keeper Of the Realms

The Tiger Year is one of change, and for Pigs it is an important time to make positive ones in your health patterns. It is more than likely you have fallen into a rut in recent years or clung to habits that no longer serve a purpose but to bring you down. You know what they are. You should enjoy the energy and gumption this year to finally make a clean break from bad health choices and, just as important, to replace them with new and better ones. Physical activity that makes you sweat should be extremely rewarding; set fun goals and track your fitness throughout the year. It may help to find a workout partner and make each other stick to the commitment. Improvement here will mirror happy developments in other areas of your life. Coincidence? We think not. Pig Wealth Pigs should curtail any unnecessary spending in 2010. You are likely to have enough resources to make ends meet but not a lot of room for discretion. There will be great temptation to overdo, especially where family is concerned. Your intentions are good, but the fact is you probably can't afford it right now. Show your love and generosity in ways that don't require credit cards, and let others fend for themselves financially. Resist the illusion you are wealthy when you receive an unexpected sum of money, and bank rather than spend it. You will need it later, as your long term financial security could be at stake.

Up coming events On the 18th of Sept the Jewish Holiday Yum Kippur is observed: Yom Kippur (Hebrew: ···· ·········, IPA: [·jom ki·pur]), also known as the Day of Atonement, is one of the holiest days of the year for Jews. Its central themes are atonement and repentance. Jews traditionally observe this holy day with a 25-hour period of fasting and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services. Yom Kippur completes the annual period known in Judaism as the High Holy Days. Yom Kippur is the tenth day of the month of Tishrei. According to Jewish tradition, God inscribes each person's fate for the coming year into a book, the Book of Life, on Rosh Hashanah, and waits until Yom Kippur to "seal" the verdict. During the Days of Awe, a Jew tries to amend his or her behavior and seek forgiveness for wrongs done against God (bein adam leMakom) and against other human beings (bein adam lechavero). The evening and day of Yom Kippur are set aside for public and private petitions and confessions of guilt (Vidui). At the end of Yom Kippur, one considers one's self absolved by God. The Yom Kippur prayer service includes several unique aspects. One is the actual number of prayer services. Unlike a regular day, which has three prayer services (Ma'ariv, the evening prayer; Shacharit, the morning prayer; and Mincha, the afternoon prayer), or a Shabbat or Yom Tov, which have four prayer services (Ma'ariv; Shacharit; Musaf, the additional prayer; and Mincha), Yom Kippur has five prayer services (Ma'ariv; Shacharit; Musaf; Mincha; and Ne'ilah, the closing prayer). The prayer services also include a public confession of sins (Vidui) and a unique prayer dedicated to the special Yom Kippur 51

Short Stories & Poetry

The "A Little Magic and a Funeral" By: Natasha Kirby an up & coming author on our site here. This a book the we will be featuring each week as a series taken 2 chapters from it till we get the whole book covered. A Little Magic and a Funeral By: Natasha Kirby

Chapter 1: Grandma My Mom always said, “Thoughts become reality.” I never understood what she meant until I was fifteen years old. Mom died when I was twelve, leaving dad to take care of my sisters and me. By the time I entered high school; my sisters had all ready moved out and were going to college, leaving dad, grandma, and me in the house. My dad always reminded me of a beanpole. He was six feet two inches tall and weighed one hundred fifty pounds. His eyes were a frosty blue with sandy red hair to match. Dad’s skin was always smooth and peachy; it never got darker in the summer or lighter in the winter. Although Dad was a giant, he always possessed a heart of gold. Always willing to help out, dry your tears and all with a smile on his face. Dad rarely got angry. He could tell off a person without using a single swear word, and the person knew he or she was out of line. Then there is grandma. 56

The Keeper Of the Realms

Mrs. Bentley was her nurse until last week. I really liked Mrs. Bentley. The last I heard, dad had pulled into the driveway and got out of the car, when Mrs. Bentley ran out of the house screaming, “I quit! You cannot pay me enough money in this world to put up with that evil creature!” Without another word, the little, plump lady got into her 1986 Chevrolet. She pulled out of the driveway, and the burned rubber as Dad watched the car getting smaller and smaller. Of course, dad called the agency to get a replacement. However, since Mrs. Bentley was the twelfth nurse in eight months, the nursing agency refused to send another replacement. They simply told dad, “You should consider an obedience school.” Dad was not mad at all. He knew that Grandma (as he put it) ‘was not easy to deal with’. My sisters and I got stuck taken care of her. While I’m in school, my older sisters, Julie and Alex, took care of Grandma. Alex has the mornings, and Julie has the afternoons. When I get home, Julie goes to class while I take over. I get my break when Dad comes home from work at 6:00 o’clock.

When I got home, I have to give Grandma a fresh cup of water. Before entering Grandma’s room, I took three deep breaths, my daily ritual for preparing to face Grandma. As soon as I open the door, I get a fierce stanch of urine, the kind of stanch that you get when you walk into a retirement home. Resisting the temptation to vomit, I walked into Grandma’s room. The once brightly green walls had strips of dull paint falling off, as if the paint were trying to run away from Grandma. The only light in the room was from a window in the right corner were Grandma’s hospital bed was positioned. The ivory curtains were pulled so that only a shallow bit of light came into the room, the way Grandma preferred. Her television (does not have a remote control) was directly across lying 57

The Keeper Of the Realms

on a wooden entertainment center. The nightstand was on the right side of Grandma’s bed from my view point was the left side of the bed. Grandma, dressed in her pale pink silk nightgown, was sitting up in her bed watching CNN on television. I took the cup of water over to her nightstand. In the most cheerful voice I could muster I said, “Good afternoon, Grandma. What is going on with the world today?” Without looking at me, the old woman screeches, “Shut up! I can’t hear the television while your mouth is running!” As calmly as I could, I put the cup down and started to walk to the door. I can’t believe I am going to get out of this room without a fight, I thought. Then, I had a feeling in my gut. I turned and look at Grandma. “I said I want a glass of water that God made! Not this poison!” she said as she threw the cup at me. I ducked for cover. Dad never said dodging cups was part of the job. It was events like this that made me want to ask for a raise in my allowance. There really should have been some type of hazardous pay in this job. The cup collided with the wall and bounced to the floor. It is a good thing we have wooden floors in the house. Grandma is in one of her more cheerful moods, I thought. “The water came out of the tap just like you wanted,” I said as I walked over to the nightstand to get the paper towels. “That’s not God’s water!” screamed the five feet five inches, gray haired, eighty-five year old woman. “That’s the devil’s water,” said the skin dangling, skeleton. I swear the woman looked like she did not have any organs in her at all, especially a heart. To be perfectly honest, she would give the Mummy a run for its money. Through her 1950’s black glasses, her stone cold blue eyes gazed at the water on the floor. “Look at the mess you made! Clean this up!” 58

The Keeper Of the Realms

I grabbed the roll of paper towels and went to clean up the mess. I was glad that the cup was plastic instead of glass. You learn after having to pick up three broken glasses off the floor. “Hurry it up, you red headed tramp!” she shrieked with a stone cold look on her face. “I’m going to die from dehydration before you get that mess cleaned up!” Grandma moved in with us shortly after Mom passed away, the day Julie referred to as ‘the Devil moved to North Carolina.’ I never met Grandpa, but I heard that he died just to get away from Grandma. Even the ghosts in the house avoid her room. When I was eight years old, Grandma was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She has the shaking hands, but Grandma has more of the loony mental side to the disease. Don’t let her fool ya. Grandma was mean before she was diagnosed. The Parkinson’s disease brought out the meanest she had been saving. Outside the family, all her friends and neighbors knew Grandma as a saint. She went to church every Sunday and Wednesday night. As one of her neighbors put it, “Graydon McDade is a good Christian woman.” She fooled them all. As soon as the neighbors and ‘friends’ turned their backs, Grandma would talk about how they were doing nothing but the devil’s work, and they all were going to hell. As a member of the family, you got the true personality twenty-four hours a day, seven days of the week, and three hundred sixty-five days of the year. Occasionally, the males of the family got a break, but the females never did. Of all the females in the family, Grandma would give Mom the hardest time. She was furious at Dad for marrying Mom. Grandma detested Mom, but come to think about it, she did not like anyone. She told Dad that she would take him out of the will if he married Mom. Dad did not care. He was in love with Mom. It was the only time Dad ever disobeyed Grandma. Even after Mom’s death, 59

The Keeper Of the Realms

Grandma still gives Dad hell about it. “You are just like your mother. A freak of nature!” she said as I was cleaning her mess. “That woman was always doing the Devil’s bidding!” Mom had always been a sensitive subject with me. The more Grandmas talked about her, the harder it was to control the built up anger inside me. Who she thinks she is, I thought. Just because a person gets old, does not give them the right to be mean and hateful to everyone. “Always into those rituals and spells…” Knowing how I felt about my Mom, Grandma, getting her kicks, kept talking. “God knew what she was doing, and struck her down in her own evil ways!” She crackled like an old hag. That’s it! She has to be put in her place. I got up and turned to her. “You know that Mom loved life and everything in it including you.” My face started to become hot as the temperature rose in the room. “Mom was the most loving person anyone could ever have the privilege to know.” “Young lady,” she said as she pointed her bony finger to me, “you should respect your elders! Apparently, my son did not teach you any manners! I will have to have a talk with him on your conduct!” Saying that just made me angrier, and made the temperature in the room rise even more. “I don’t care what you tell Dad! You are not going to talk that way about Mom! Besides, apparently your mother never taught you any manners; otherwise, we would not be in this situation.” Apparently, that struck a cord with Grandma. Her eyes got big and wide, and her bottom jaw dropped. It took a minute before she finally recovered and screamed, “The devil’s words! You keep that up and you will be struck down just like your mother!” I could feel the energy swirling faster and faster in the room. Sweat 60

The Keeper Of the Realms

was rolling down my forehead into my eyes causing them to burn. My hands, both were fists, were sweating. I could feel that something magical was happening, but I did not care. “There is a saying…if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” The old lady was in shock. Waving her hands in fury, she screamed, “That’s it! Go get Miles right now!” The energy was building up tighter and tighter between us. All I could do was concentrate on Grandma. I would not let her bully me anymore. This was going to stop once and for all. As calm as I could be, I said, “As far as I am concerned you can drop dead before I help you anymore!” Then all the energy was released, a splitting sound came from the television. I turned to see what had happened, and the television screen had a solid crack that looked like a line graph going from one end to the other. As I turned, I saw Grandma grabbing her chest, and in a hoarse whisper, she said, “Pain.” Then she fell back on her bed, and did not move. I rolled my eyes. She was just playing one of her practical jokes to get a rise out of me, I thought. As I walked over to the left side of her bed, I grumbled, “I am not falling for this, Grandma. Quit sulking. You are all right.” I got to her bed, and felt her left wrist for a pulse. Grandma did not have a pulse. I checked her neck for a pulse. No pulse. Realizing what had happened; I dropped her arm and slowly backed away from her. All be damn….Grandma is dead, I thought. Boy, I’m going to catch hell for this.

Chapter 2 The Funeral

61

The Keeper Of the Realms

The kitchen and dining room combination was always shiny bright every morning. The morning sun beamed into the window directly over the clear white two tub stainless steel sink. The canary yellow short curtains on the window were closed. The lightly sealed oak cabinets surrounded the window on both sides. The marble countertop took the entire back wall. Directly across from the sink was the bar, and beside it was the flat electric stove. The refrigerator with an ice dispenser on the freezer side was to the right of the bar. All the appliances were new stainless steel, and the wall was a freshly painted sunny yellow that matched the four by four white tile floor. The phone, which had a five feet cord, was on the wall next to the refrigerator. Everything was in place and matched the room perfectly, right up to the dish towels, dishcloth, and pot holders. That was the way Mom liked it, and even after her death, Dad stuck to the tradition. “What do you mean she’s not there?” Julie cried into the phone. Julie, five feet five inches tall, weighted one-hundred twenty pounds with sandy blond reddish hair that was twisted into a braid, was a cross between a model and a woman body builder. She was wearing light sky jeans and a sleeveless yellow silk blouse. A vain on her peachy skin forehead popped up and started throbbing right above her bright green right eye, while she listened to the funeral director, Mr. Tully. “Mr. Tully, are you telling me that my dead grandmother got up and walked out of your funeral home?” This is what got both Alex, my middle sister, and my attention. We were sitting at the table, on the other side of the bar, eating breakfast. I was having my usual breakfast – two pieces of butter toast with strawberry jam and a coke. Alex never had a usual breakfast. I was amazed she was eating Coco Puffs because Alex did not like cereal. Alex was five feet tall seven inches, one-hundred and fifteen pounds, ivory cream skin, cat green eyes, and short curly, dark, autumn hair 62

The Keeper Of the Realms

that was shaved on the sides. She was wearing jet black Lee jeans and a short sleeve white shirt that had a bubble head character in red with red letters on the back that said, ‘I can’t take it anymore!’ “You find her, you give me a call! Goodbye, Mr. Tully!” Julie said as she slammed the phone. She walked over to the coffee maker on the counter next to the stove, and poured herself a cup of Starbuck’s Mocha coffee into her pale blue mug. She came over to the table and sat down in the seat across from Alex. She rubbed her forehead, and with a sigh, Julie said, “I don’t know why I agreed to make all the arrangements.” “I see that you handle the news about Grandma being a vampire very well.” Alex calmly said. “Well, she did suck the souls out of people while she was alive; she might as well suck their blood too while she’s at it.” Alex said with her right side of her lips in a slight upper grin. Julie’s mouth dropped; then, she burst out laughing. Alex and I joined her. We were laughing so hard that tears came out of our eyes. “Thank you, Alex.” She said as she grabbed Alex’s hand, “I really needed that.” When we finally were able to control ourselves, Julie continued, “No, arranging this funeral has been a nightmare. Who would have thought that Grandma would be such a pain in death as she was in life?” “Well, it is only a few more days, and we will not have to worry about her anymore. “ I said. With a sigh, I said, “I wonder if anyone besides Dad will miss her.” “Atlantis, the only people that will miss her will be the ones who did not know her.” Julie said, “You know…the lucky ones.” “Did Dad ask you to plan the funeral? I asked. “No, he didn’t.” Alex answered with sarcasm, “You know Julie, and she had to volunteer.” With her right side smile, she said, “She can’t resist trying to get those brownie points.” Thrown off balance, Julie shaking her index finger on her right hand 63

The Keeper Of the Realms

at Alex, replied, “Now Alexia McDade, you know that isn’t true! I was trying to give Dad some time to heal through this. You know this is rough on him. After all, it was his mother that died.” Listening to my sister’s bicker started to bore me. I started yawning, and Alex asked, “Did not get enough sleep last night? I would have thought that since Grandma was dead, you would have slept like a baby.” Grinning, “Well, I would have, but the ghosts kept me up all night partying. They were holding hands and swirling in a circle while they were singing, ‘Ding, dong, the bitch is dead over and over again.” We all laugh. It has been a long time, since we were allowed to laugh in the house without bothering Grandma. Julie sounding shocked, “I hope Dad didn’t hear them.” “No. He did not hear them.” I replied. “They were in my room singing it.” My room was so far in the back no one towards the front of the house could hear what was going on in my room. However, you can hear everything going on from the front of the house. “That’s total disrespect!” exclaimed Julie. “Don’t they have any respect for the dead? I should have a word with them.” “Now, exactly what are you going to say to them, Julie?” Alex inquired as she looked directly at her. “It is not like you can ground them, beat them with a stick, or take the TV away from them. They’re dead. They could care less.” Before Julie could comment on that remark, the telephone rang, and she answered it. “Hello. Oh, Mr. Tully, have you found my Grandmother?” She said with an anxious tone. As Julie listened to Mr. Tully, Alex continuing to chew her Cocoa Puff asked me, “Now, what do you feel so guilty about?” “Nothing,” I replied. It slipped my mind that Alex was empathic. To be honest, it was quite annoying. You always had to keep your feelings guarded when she was around. 64

The Keeper Of the Realms

“There is something….this guilt of yours is beginning to give me heart burn.” She looked at me. “Now tell me so I can finish my breakfast.” The truth was I did feel guilty about Grandma’s death, but I wasn’t going to tell Alex or anyone else about it. I was trying to figure out how to get off the topic, when Julie got off the phone with Mr. Tully. “Well, I have to go to the funeral home. Alex, would you like to come with me?” Before Alex could reply, I slapped her on the shoulder and said, “Sure, she would like to go, wouldn’t you?” Both Julie and I were staring at Alex like a couple of hawks. Alex staring back said, “Sure. Besides I want to see the body myself.” She put her bowl in the sink and picked up a wooden spoon as she turned and walked toward the door. Julie gave Alex a questioning confusion look demanded, “What is that for?” “This?” Alex looked at Julie and with a straight face she replied, “In case Grandma is a vampire. That way, I will be prepared.” Grabbing the wooden spoon from Alex, Julie said, “Give me that!” Putting the spoon back up, “Alex, you are not Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Besides, you know that the only real vampires are psyche vampires. Mom would not like you taking her best wooden spoon and driving it through Grandma’s heart that is if she had one.” Shrugging, Alex replied, “How do you know? Mom did not like her either.” Pushing Alex out the door, Julie said, “Get out of here!” The day came when it was time for Grandma’s funeral, and no one except Dad and Julie wanted to go. The black limo pulled up, and I went to fetch Dad. I found him in Grandma’s room staring at Grandma’s bed. I really did not want to disturb him, but then again, 65

The Keeper Of the Realms

I did not want to go. After a standing there for a few minutes, Dad looked up with a frown on his face and tears rolling down his eyes, saw me in at the door frame. “Is the car here?” He asked. I nodded, and he took one more look at the bed and walked toward me. It was like time had slow down to slow motion as he walked toward me. The last time I saw Dad this sad was when Mom died. To be honest, I did not understand why. Grandma had been so hateful and nasty to Dad. When he finally got to me, he took me by the hand tried to smile and said, “Let’s go.” Together we walked down the hall, out the kitchen door, and got into the car. Julie decided that it was better to have the funeral at the grave site because (as she said) it might be easier on Dad. However, Alex and I thought it was because it was cheaper. Bates Cemetery was on the side of an immense hill, and at the top was the old Bates house. Bates Cemetery had several graves on all sides of the hill except the bay side. It had only one tree, and it looked dead. Grandma’s grave was on the top of the hill. As the car turned in to the Bates Cemetery, you could look through the tinted windows of the car and see the old Bates house on top of the hill. Just the name of the cemetery gave me the creeps, but when you add the house, it was like a scene from Psycho, the perfect place to bury Grandma. The road lead to Grandma’s grave was so curvy I thought I would be car sick before we got there. When we got to the burying site, Mr. Tully and several people were already there, and all of us got out of the car. We noticed that Grandma was not there. Julie walked over to Mr. Tully and asked, “Where is Grandma?” His forehead was moist as he replied, “The driver is going to be a bit late. He is stuck in traffic.” Apparently, he was afraid of Julie because he started to sweat profoundly. 66

The Keeper Of the Realms

Grandma would have a fit if she knew she was late for her own funeral. She was always particular about being punctual. “There he is.” Mr. Tully sounded relieved as the car came up the curvy road. However, the car kept moving from side to side as it came up the road, making Mr. Tully sweat like a fire hydrant that been opened on a hot summer’s day. When the car finally got up the hill, it ran into the only tree in the cemetery. The back doors swung opened and Grandma’s casket rolled out of the doors and flew down the hill towards the bay. Mr. Tully and Julie ran after the coffin screaming, “Come back here!!” Like Grandma was really going to listen. Dad, Alex, and I ran after them. When the casket got to the bottom of the hill, it plunked into the bay and floated away. Julie was yelling and swearing at Mr. Tully. Dad saluted as he stood on the bay beach, and Alex and I stood on the edge of the grass. Alex remarked, “I thought Grandma hated water.” “Yea, she did.” I replied. “She always said it was the Devil’s water.” “Well, she’s at home.” Alex remarked, and I cocked my head. She had her right side smile and together we giggled. We made sure that neither Dad nor Julie heard us. A few days later, Grandma’s casket was returned, but it was not in good condition. It washed up on the bay a few miles down in Cutterville. Cutterville had a major thunderstorm the night before. The fire fighters called Mr. Tully to let him know they found Grandma’s casket. However, lightning struck the casket resulting in some smoke damage. Mr. Tully explained all of this to us as Alex was restraining Julie. Mr. Tully left us alone while we viewed the body. The casket was crispy on the outside. When the casket was open, Grandma looked like a melted version of the crypt keeper. Alex looked in the casket, and said, “Finally. Grandma reveals her true 67

The Keeper Of the Realms

self.” When Julie looked in the casket, she was not too happy. She gave Alex a cold look. “I am going to have a talk with Mr. Tully.” “Now, Julie, not all of this is Mr. Tully’s fault. Give the man a break.” Alex stated. “You are giving the man chest pains.” Julie’s temper began to flare. To keep the peace, I said, “I think what Alex is trying to say is we just want to bury Grandma. Give Dad closure, and let us get on with our lives.” I don’t know what I said, but suddenly, Julie was very calm. I wasn’t sure if I should be worried, happy, or running for my life. Julie took a deep breath, and said, “O.k.” She went to talk to Mr. Tully. Alex walked towards me and said, “Where did that come from?” Before I could reply, the lights went out. The emergency red lights came on. The emergency lights shined on Grandma’s casket. Alex and I turned to look at the casket. Her “discussion” with Mr. Tully resulted in we were not charged for the service or the casket. THE END TILL NEXT WEEKS ADDITION

And here is 2 poems from our poetry contest in the beginning of the month.

the night's repose, when Satan nearly fell. That famous battle is legend here; One still can feel the hate and fear. If you chance to listen closely, try not to dismay. It's just the echoes of the fallen ones, battling one more day. This war has raged down through the ages, foretold in whispers by soothes and sages. Though its origin remains unclear, of one thing I am certain: the fate of man hangs in the balance but just one side can win. I'm forced to watch, despite my pain, while metal clashes and arrows rain. The hordes of Hell launch a swift attack, inflicting pain their pleasure; When Michael suddenly appears, a blazing sword his treasure. Forged by a god, at the dawn of time, for felling demons - a minor crime. A bright blue flame engulfs its blade, reflected in his eyes; He smiles grimly and demons scream but there'll be no compromise. A trumpet blast shakes the earth; The seeds of victory given birth. The men of Light rise up in fury and sense the conquest near; The earth cracks open and demons wail and end their life in fear. The sky above is filled with light, shattering the bonds of night. The ground provides a timeless tomb, where escape is not an option; The hordes of Hell forever doomed, payment for their action. Michael squints and views the fields of broken bodies, swords and shields. A single tear rolls down his cheek but pity's not his way; Gabriel then arrives to say they've won the day. I watch a glowing sphere appear - Satan roars, his end is near. But the portal takes him to safe haven, if such can be found; Michael looks up at me screaming and drives his sword into the ground. The Food We Love

Each week we will feature some different foods & recipes from those on our sites to share w/ all of you. This week courtesy of Lady Pandora will explore Puerto Rican Foods & a bit of there history:

72

The Keeper Of the Realms

Mofongo, tostones mashed in a pilón, was introduced with the slave trade, is often served with caldo, or as a side dish

The history and development of Puerto Rican cuisine begins with the Taíno Indians, the natives Columbus found at discovery. Some Taíno foods still used today include yuca, peppers, and corn. Taínos invented the barbacoa and used a pilón to mash their ingredients and paints. The Spaniards brought a variety of new ingredients including, olives, garlic, bacalao, and cilantro. The various culinary specialties of the Iberian peninsula also had an important role in the development of the Puerto Rican food.

Other foods native to Latino America were brought to the island with the Spanish trade, such as cocoa from Mexico. African slaves influenced the Puerto Rican kitchen greatly introducing the use of plantains, coconuts, and their favorite method of cooking, frying. These plus early Dutch, French, Italian, and Chinese immigrants influenced not only our culture but our cooking as well. This great variety of traditions came together to form La Cocina Criolla. 73

The Keeper Of the Realms

Today the Puerto Rican kitchen has been influenced by American foods. You can find McDonald's everywhere and anywhere on the island along with pizza shops and many other fast food places. Chain restaurants have brought many different dishes into the island as well. Working women take advantage of the many prepared foods available on the market. Pique Caballero-the hot sauce

and salt in a glass bottle along with the peppercorns. After the hot peppers with the olive oil have cooled, add them to the glass bottle. Let the sauce marinate for a day or so before using. WARNING!!! DO NOT HAVE ME OR MY MOM ON YOUR MIND IF YOU GET BURNED!!!! Tips Wash your hands immediately after cutting the peppers. The hot ingredient inside the pepper will burn if you don't wash your hands.

Pastelillos de Carne-these can be made with cheese and chicken to

Ingredients 3 1/3 cup all purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 1 1/2 tbsp. shortening (chilled) (I love Crisco) 1 egg (well beaten) 3/4 cup cold water Vegetable oil Directions The Dough: 75

The Keeper Of the Realms Mix flour, salt and baking powder. Cut the shortening into the flour mixture. Using a blender, thoroughly mix the egg and water. Add the liquid mixture to the flour and thoroughly mix using a fork. Divide the dough into 10 pieces. Work each piece with a rolling pin until it is the size of a small plate. The Filling: Please refer to "Picadillo Recipe".

Add 1 tbsp. of meat filling per pastelillo, coat the edge with a little water and fold over. Press down the edges with a fork to secure and seal them. Fry in plenty of oil so they will expand. Place on paper towels to absorb the extra oil.

RICAN WARNING!!! Handle these after being at room temperature for at least 15 minutes. They are hot and WILL burn your mouth and "bembas". Should make 10 pastelillos. Tips You can use ready-made dough which they call "plantillas", sold at Cuban grocery stores. They are made by Goya and Cubanita brands. They come in 2 sizes and in packages of 10 circles which you just have to stuff and seal. In Mexican grocery stores you can find them too. They are made by "La Salte単a" and bring 12-15 "tapas". 76

The Keeper Of the Realms Try stuffing them with shredded cheese, shrimp, crab meat or my "Basic Meat Filling" recipe.

Coquito-drink

Ingredients 2 - 3 cinnamon sticks 2 c. water 12 oz. evaporated milk 14 oz. condensed milk 4 egg yolks 15 oz. cream of coconut 4 c. white rum (Bacardi, Don Q. etc) (Adjust to taste) Directions Start by boiling the cinnamon sticks in the 2 cups of water. When the water turns yellow and has the smell and you can taste the cinnamon, take the sticks out. Now add the evaporated milk, condensed milk and egg yolks and cook at a very low temperature. Make sure to stir while it is cooking to avoid it sticking to your pan. (If it does, see hint below.) After it has boiled for a few minutes, stir in the cream of coconut and then the rum. Stir it very well and take off the stove. Let it cool, chill and enjoy it . Tips *Baptized coquito is coquito with rum. Un-baptized, (you guessed it) has no rum. If you "can't" drink rum, add rum flavoring. 77

The Keeper Of the Realms

If you “accidentally” (because you were drinking the rum and not minding the pot, NOT Mary Jane either) got brown yucky stuff on the bottom of the pan, add bleach and a little water and boil. Clean up is easy now. “When not in use”, keep it in the refrigerator and it will last (ha ha) for a very long time. If you keep it out, it will go faster. E-mail me the extra rum, he he he.

The Keeper Of the Realms

The Keeper of the Realms weekly comedy Girls night out Two women friends had gone out for a Girls Night Out, and had been decidedly over-enthusiastic on the cocktails. Incredibly drunk and walking home they suddenly realized they both needed to pee. They were very near a graveyard and one of them suggested they do their business behind a headstone or something. The first woman had nothing to wipe with so she took off her panties, used them and threw them away. Her friend however was wearing an expensive underwear set and didn't want to ruin hers, but was lucky enough to salvage a large ribbon from a wreath that was on a grave and proceeded to wipe herself with it. After finishing, they made their way home. The next day the first woman's husband phones the other husband and said, "These damn girls nights out have got to stop. My wife came home last night without her panties." "That's nothing," said the other. "Mine came back with a sympathy card stuck between the cheeks of her butt that said, 'From all of us at the Fire Station, Well never forget you!'

Church Bells On hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to her grandparent's house to visit her 95 year old grandmother and comfort her. When she asked how her grandfather had died, her grandmother replied, "He had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning." Horrified, Katie told her grandmother that 2 people nearly 100 years old having sex would surely be asking for trouble. "Oh no, my dear, " replied granny. "Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured out the best time to do it was when the church bells would start to ring. It was just the right rhythm. Nice and slow and even. The Keeper Of the Realms hadn't come along, he'd still be alive today!"

Last Day on the Job It was the mailman's last day on the job after 35 years of carrying the mail through all kinds of weather to the same neighborhood. When he arrived at the first house on his route he was greeted by the whole family there, who congratulated him and sent him on his way with a big gift envelope. At the second house they presented him with a box of fine cigars. The folks at the third house handed him a selection of terrific fishing lures. At the fourth house he was met at the door by a strikingly beautiful woman in a revealing negligee. She took him by the hand, gently led him through the door, and led him up the stairs to the bedroom where she blew his mind with the most passionate love he had ever experienced. When he had had enough they went downstairs, where she fixed him a giant breakfast, eggs, potatoes, ham, sausage, blueberry waffles, and fresh squeezed orange juice. When he was truly satisfied she poured him a cup of steaming coffee. As she was pouring, he noticed a dollar bill sticking out from under the cup's bottom edge. "All this was just too wonderful for words," he said, "but what's the dollar for?" "Well," she said, "last night, I told my husband that today would be your last day, and that we should do something special for you. I asked him what to give you." He said, "Fuck him, give him a dollar." The lady then said, "The breakfast was my idea."
