Friends of the Farm Clary Shy Urban Agriculture Park Formerly the site of the Boone County Fairgrounds, the City of Columbia’s nine acre Clary-Shy park is home to the ARC (Activity and Recreation Center) as well as the gathering point for the Columbia Farmer’s Market. The significant amount of greenspace on the property provides ample space for a few soccer fields, but has long been evaluated for additional Parks and Recreation uses. In 2015 SOA was approached by the “Friends of the Farm,” a coalition of non-profit organizations and the Columbia Parks and Recreation Department, to create a phased Master Plan for the property and renderings to facilitate fundraising. The Master Plan features a new 37,800sf Farmers Market Pavilion to house 100 vendors, 2,500 sf office building for the constituent non-profit organizations, and a 1,200 sf multi-purpose building for the Parks Department. The majority of the remaining site is then allocated for a four acre Urban Farm, along with 32,000 sf of new parking. A primary design goal was to make the Farmer’s Market more than a place to shop, but also a recreational and educational destination. A pedestrian promenade features plenty of seating, play structures, restrooms, shade and edible landscaping. Adjacent to the promenade is the Urban Agriculture Park’s ‘Outdoor Classroom’ for children. More intensive agriculture demonstrations are located farther from the pedestrian center, while preserving the existing soccer fields. The Market then becomes a hub of activities for the whole family to enjoy. *CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Special Olympics Missouri Training for Life Campus


COMMUNITY Outdated and inadequate space illuminated the need for a new Training for Life Campus for Special Olympics Missouri (SOMO). This new state headquarters will house both the organization’s corporate offices and athletic facility providing quality training spaces and equipment for the state’s 14,000+ athletes and 1,400 volunteer coaches, as well as a centralized clearing house for equipment, supplies, materials and technology. During the Pre-Design phase, SOA worked extensively with SOMO’s diverse group of stakeholders, including the corporate board, staff, athletes and families, guiding them through a series of potential design options. SOA clarified the group’s vision through a series of planning techniques including a feasibility study, an interactive two-day “charette,” and fly-by video studies using the computer modeled building and site. The result was a plan that both meets their needs and budget today, but allows them to expand both indoor and outdoor facilities to meet their future needs. The design of their new 34,135 sf headquarters includes a grand lobby and “Hall of Heros” to motivate and inspire, multi-functional meeting spaces, gym facilities, fitness and powerlifting spaces, and a Healthy Athletes clinic for screenings. Outdoor spaces include a playing field, sports track and walking paths, all overlooked by the observation deck of the headquarters building. Support services will include dock high loading for the storage warehouse. The site design best utilizes the former quarry site at the southern entrance into Jefferson City to highlight the new facility, provide privacy and security for the outdoor sports, and utilize the up to 100’ tall rock walls for shading athletic fields for afternoon activities. SOA joined forces with Design-Build contractor Reinhardt-Wilson, who is expected to begin construction in 2017.


PRELIMINARY STUDY

Danuser Machine Company Office Building Addition Out of a desire to improve the University of Missouri, Columbia‘s student recruitment process, SOA was hired to conduct a study evaluating the potential for converting a space on Jesse Hall’s first floor into a Welcome Center. To keep MU competitive with other institutions, the University was considering the construction of a new Welcome Center that would improve access for visitors and create an interactive, engaging space for prospective students and their parents to learn about MU. The program also called for presentation and support spaces to accommodate large groups and recruitment events. SOA and our consultants initiated the project by conducting a code study and ‘vision tour’ to understand the University’s aesthetic preferences. While the Welcome Center itself would meet all ADA regulations, significant improvements to the accessibility of historic Jesse Hall were also a high priority. SOA identified various methods for improving building access, including upgrades to: wayfinding signage, elevator service, restrooms, pavement, stair treads and railings, along with door hardware. As the project was a feasibility study only, SOA service’s included preparation of several design options, corresponding opinions of probable cost, photo-realistic renderings and 3-D animations, and an executive summary for the University’s consideration.


PRELIMINARY STUDY


Danuser - Office Addition COMMERCIAL

Danuser is a family owned manufacturing business that has been in Fulton for over 100 years. They chose SOA to design an office building that will serve them for the next 100 years. The company’s history is featured throughout the building by integrating design elements such as a salvaged beam crane, owner fabricated decorative steel panels, and display areas to showcase key historical items. The new office building connects to the existing manufacturing area and integrates with the owner’s business and site planning as phase two of their three phase long-term business expansion plan. The central part of the building features a taller, daylit clerestory structure that also acts as the entry. SOA’s digital building model helped the client to decide on clear glazing in this space (instead of frosted) through daylight simulation videos at different times of the year. The office spaces consist of flexible open office areas ringed by private offices and conference rooms. A transition area from the existing manufacturing shop into the cafeteria promotes office and manufacturing staff interaction. The cafeteria is designed to accommodate many people quickly moving through the area, but also expands (via glazed overhead doors) to create an area large enough for training and special events. In order to hone in on desired design elements, SOA not only created a ‘Vision Tour’ of building images, but also visited area buildings, designed by SOA and other firms, with the client. This thorough research combined with building information modelling (including architectural, structural, civil, and MEP systems) enabled the owner to make informed design decisions. Additionally, it allowed SOA and Danuser to coordinate on several building components, so that they can manufacture these featured elements themselves.


COMMERCIAL


Walnut Shell Building Local developer East 280, LLC approached SOA to design a six story, mixed-use building on a narrow parcel of property situated between the Boone County Courthouse and historic downtown structures on Walnut Street. The client’s goal was to create an attractive, contextually appropriate, commercial office building which allowed for tenant finish out. The building’s ground floor is designed to accommodate an office, retail space or small restaurant. The second through fifth floors are intended for business offices. The sixth floor, or “penthouse,” has an outdoor deck ideal for a restaurant or gathering space. The design also includes a basement with a small leasable area and mechanical spaces that serve the entire building. The site presented a number of challenges. The location of new building footings was limited so as not to disturb the adjacent century-old building. On the north facade, the code-required fire separation distance from the alley restricted the size of window and door openings. The west side of the property, abutting the Courthouse Plaza, created an opportunity for a grand building entrance and a unique potential to cantilever the structure over the property line on the upper stories to increase leasable area. In order to gain the County Commission’s approval for such building features, SOA facilitated meetings with the Commission, prepared renderings, and conducted a shade study showing how the new building would affect the Courthouse’s greenspace. In the end, the Commission granted the requested easements and felt that the new building could enhance and further enliven the public space. Various building heights, facades, and structural systems were studied until the project was able to arrive at design that balanced office spaces of a leasable size, construction costs within the client’s budget and aesthetics appropriate for the historic context.

Walnut Penthouse Bar Local developer East 280, LLC approached SOA to design a bar on the Penthouse level of their Walnut building. The client’s goal was to create a fun and exciting space for both students and professionals. The Penthouse presented a few problems for the design team. The width of the building mad it difficult to provide for adequate code compliance and aesthetic appeal at the same time. With a few plan variations and and flexibility from the client we were able to get the client their wishlist and complete a succesful project.

Century 21 Advantage Professional Office Building When Century 21 Real Estate found a greenfield property for their new office, they turned to SOA to lead the design. The new 10,660 sf, two-story office building was designed to serve not only the real estate company’s space needs, but also create extra tenant space to lease to other industry related businesses. Creating attractive gathering spaces, both formal and informal, that the building tenants could share was a high priority. A wrap around deck provides a private back entrance. Combined with an exterior fireplace and covered seating, the deck creates an outdoor space to host employees and clients alike. Inside the building, a folding partition makes the shared conference room all the more flexible. In addition, shared reception, lobby, lounge, break and print rooms serve the entire building. Because SOA was simultaneously involved in the design of the adjacent property, the Century 21 project was able to reduce costs by sharing a driveway and dumpster with the neighboring office building. A two-story entry feature and vaulted ceilings, along with the continuation of stone veneer from exterior to interior, create a warm and spacious work environment. The project is currently under construction and expected to be occupied in spring 2019. *CURRENTLY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Spiderlace


SpiderLace was created for the Love Lace competition put on by the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia. The International Lace Award seeks to encourage contemporary design and challenge conventional notions of lace and its application in the areas of fashion, built environment, and digital media. The worldwide competition was open to all fields of practice. The competition defines lace as an openwork structure whose negative space is as important as the structure of the lace itself. The project was originally concieved by Natahn Howe, professor at Kansas State University. Professor Howe recruited a five person design team to assist him through the design development phase and realization of the project. Each member of the team worked on the design, using the voronoi design to create the overall lace pattern. Spiderlace was inspired by an experience in Professor Howe’s early childhood. He recalls seeing a spider web early one morning, covered with dew.

seeing a spider web early one morning, covered with dew. This experience has influenced his design thorughout his career. The conceptual design emerged from this memory. From this point the team worked with Professor Howe to develop the design. When it came to selecting materials to cut for the project, metal was the first material. As the design process progressed a decision was made to use a material that was both lightweight and had the ability to hold itself, as well as both sides of the model. A lightweight card stock was selected, using acrylic for the connections. The project was completed in late December 2010 and shipped to Australia. Spiderlace will be on display at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum until August 2011.


Competition The early iterations helped to develop the vornoi pattern as well as develop the shadows cast by the differing patterns on each side and the interior acrylic pattern. At this point it was discovered that having the acrylic in between the two sides was more of a hindrance than an asset, as it interfered with the top and bottom as well as the connection in the middle. The curve was developed to allow Spiderlace to be freestanding and displayed without exterior supports that would interfere with the viewing experience. As the development progressed, the scale of the model was increased to investigate the ability of the paper to hold up and act as the main structure of the entire project. It was discovered that the card stock would hold up, but deflected enough that another structure would have to be developed to increase the stability of the project.


Competition In the final build of Spiderlace one more problem was discovered. After it was built the project stood for about twelve hours before collapsing due to the paper strength. In the redesign frames were built along the seams of the panels to increase their strength. This adaptation worked and the model was constructed again: this time the project stayed upright for a full week. Spiderlace was dismantled and packaged for shipping, to be constructed in Australia by a colleague of Professor Howe’s. The project was assembled and on display at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia for the duration of the show.•
