INTRODUCTION Summer is finally here and we’ve now passed halfway in the year! Time truly waits for no one and the six-month mark only reminds us of this, and the importance of getting serious with our personal goals, career plans and ambitions. On the subject of personal goals, this brings me nicely to introduce you to the Running/Athletics edition of Lowdown. As we all know, the track and field is exactly where the Nike legacy began. Running is often frowned upon, but it needn’t be! This marks an exciting time for runners and Nike Running, and we will do our best to show you why, as well as providing you with incentives to get running yourselves.

Illustration

As we explore, true to the primary maxim, Nike is on the offence always, whether it be NikeTown Runners (our store running club), or the world’s biggest running club, Nike+ which celebrates its fifth anniversary this year.

Logos

We also preview events which take the ‘boring’ element out of the sport such as ‘Run to The Beat’, and more globally, the Athletics World Championships. And if all of that fails to resonate; we catch up with some of our very own runners and athletes from around the store who we’re sure will be making big noise in the coming seasons… As this is the running issue; it’s only right that I leave you with Steve Prefontaine’s poignant quote which transcends track, field and road; and promotes progression within our individual lives:

“To Give Anything Less Than your Best, Is To Sacrifice the Gift”. We are all very gifted with the potential to achieve great things. As the ‘Soul of Nike’ professed to all those years back; ‘Do Not let your gift go to waste.’

Take (and make) your mark folks

orn in Mogadishu, Somalia, Mo moved to England in 1993 and was identified at school as having great potential by his PE teacher, Alan Watkinson. He went on to be a very successful junior athlete, winning a silver medal at the European Junior Cross Country Championships. However, Mo Farah only made a breakthrough on to the senior stage in 2006, when he lowered his lifetime best from 13:30.53 to 13:09.40 in Heusden, before winning the silver medal at the European Championships behind Jesus Espana from Spain. He won his first major title at the 2006 European Cross Country Championships and finished an impressive 11th at the World Cross Country Championships in Mombasa. At the 2007 World Championships, he made his first world final, finishing a creditable 6th and then improved his lifetime best to 13:07.00 at the Ivo Van Damme Memorial in Brussels. He finished sixth at the 2008 World Indoor Championships in Valencia and apart from a victory at the European Cup, the summer campaign was something of a disappointment, as he failed to progress through his heat at the Olympic Games. Although

he did end the year on a high with a third successive win at Tyneside, winning the Great North Mile. After a six-week training stint in Ethiopia, he won the silver medal at the European Cross Country Championships. In 2009, Farah smashed John Mayock’s 3000m indoor record in Glasgow, clocking 7:40.99 on his seasonal debut, thanks to hard training in Kenya after the European Cross. He then went on to improve that again to 7:34.47 in Birmingham. This moved him to second on the European all-time list behind Alberto Garcia, who failed a drugs test soon afterwards and only Dave Moorcroft has run faster outdoors as a British athlete. Farah lived up to the pre-race expectations in the European Indoor final, taking the gold medal in a championship record of 7:40.17. He won the inaugural European Team Championship 5000m in Lieira, Portugal but finished a slightly disappointing 7th in the World Championship final in Berlin. But it planned out to be a rewarding year where he finished top of the British rankings at 1500m, 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m. However, 2010 was to be his year with an early season victory at the European Team Championship over 5000m followed by a life-time best and victory over 10,000m in the European Cup. And then at the European Championships in Barcelona he showed his true class with a double gold strike taking the 5000m and 10,000m with ease. The best was still to come and at last he finally broke David Moorcroft’s long standing UK record over 5000m with a world-class performance of 12:57.94 at the IAAF Diamond League Meeting in Zurich. 2011 has started off in fine style with victories at the European Indoor Championships and a glimpse of the future with a resounding win in the New York City Half Marathon. To top it all off he has now become a World Champion over 5,000m and a silver medallist over the 10,000m. A World Championships to make a whole nation proud.

T

he highly talented Brit has made quite a breakthrough in 2008, lowering her PB by six-seconds to win the NCAA title. In 2009 she lowered it again and finished in the silver medal position at the Aviva European Indoor Championships Trials over 1500m and claimed the bronze over the same distance at the Aviva World Championships Trials. At the Spar European Team Championships she doubled up over 800m and 1500m and finished in 4th place in each event. However, she saved the best till last at the IAAF World Athletics Final in Thessalonika, Greece where she finished in silver medal position over 1500m. 2010 saw her take the Aviva European Trials race over 1500m at Birmingham with a 57 second last lap after an incredibly slow tactical race. At the European Championships she was not at her best with a 10th placing in the final and at the Commonwealth Games, she finished in 4th place over 1500m and 5th over 800m. Hannah England produced a fantastic yet we may all agree, ‘surprising’ sprint finish to claim silver in her 1500m event in Daegu. She lists Olympic gold medallist, Kelly Holmes as her biggest influence. She has achieved grade eight in Ballet as well as being able to do tap and modern dance. Her brother and sister play county cricket.

EDITORS NOTE What an exciting time for the NTL Running department after the finale of the Athletics World Championships in Daegu. With the athletes competing at the top of their game we expected nothing short of blood, sweat and tears (maybe not so much blood), but sweat and tears we defiantly witnessed. The whole week was packed full of surprising results, agonising viewing and the outright ‘unacceptable’ false starts. The GB team set out to achieve seven medals in total, and for the record five out of those were from Nike athletes with Dai Greene and Mo Farah winning gold. It is also an exciting time for the NTL Low Down with a couple of new additions to the team. We have added a new writer, Tobi (football) and we have also appointed Kyra (football) as the Low Down Editorial designer. As always, thank you to you all for another job well done on this issue. From now on the Low Down will be bimonthly, enough time for you all to eagerly anticipate the next fantastic issue. Thank you and enjoy,

Batuala Beraud.
