The Andres Institute of Art in Brookline, N.H., makes the experience of art an everyday relationship.

A surprise around every bend BY LAURA JEAN WHITCOMB PHOTOS BY JENNY BLASCHIK

As an artist, it’s an opportunity to create an outdoor sculpture. Materials, tools and support are provided as sculptors design and build art that will be placed on permanent display on a mountain in New Hampshire. As a visitor, it’s awe inspiring to see a 15 foot tall (and 11 ton) work of art among the trees. The Andres Institute of Art (AIA) is open every day from dawn to dusk for people who want to see art in a natural setting. The idea for a sculpture park started in 1996, when engineer and innovator Paul Andres purchased Big Bear Mountain in Brookline, N.H., and moved into the house near the top of the mountain. Based on his lifelong love of nature and passion for art, he decided to purchase sculptures for the acreage surrounding his new home. Coincidentally, master sculptor John M. Weidman had been living in Brookline for many years. They began to work together to make plans to add sculptures to the mountain. In 1998, they co-founded the Andres Institute of Art as a 501(c) (3) charitable organization. “The sculpture park is sited on 140 acres of on one of New Hampshire’s earliest ski hills with a mechanized tow lift. There are miles of walking trails winding through woods, meadows and old stone quarries, affording visitors hours of exercise while enjoying spectacular views, quiet settings and timeless art,” says Robin Clark, AIA board president. Every year, they host a symposium where artists from all over the world come to New Hampshire to cut, bend and weld steel and split, shape and polish stone. The public is invited to watch the artists at work

during the three-week Bridges and Connections International Sculpture Symposium held in September and October. Eighteen years later, the Andres Institute of Art has 83 thoughtprovoking original works of art nestled along walking trails all over the mountain. Three more will be placed in the fall of 2016. “A stroll along these old trails yields unexpected discovery: sculpted chimes beneath a rock capped with elephant-ear lichen; a floating sculpture in a reflecting pool of an abandoned quarry; an eternal debate between iron figures gathered in a shady grove,” says Clark. “But unlike most art galleries and museums where visitors are kept at arms length from the collection, at Andres visitors of all ages are encouraged to physically interact with our sculptures.” The grounds at Andres Institute of Art are open to the public year round, free of charge. Maps are located in the kiosk in the trailhead parking lot. V

Studio, gallery, classroom

Creative Ventures Gallery in Amherst, N.H., is all three, and the perfect place for the public to interact with artists on a daily basis.

BY LAURA JEAN WHITCOMB

There’s always something happening at the Creative Ventures Gallery in Amherst, N.H. Eight artists work on site, and the monthly schedule offers at least one class a day. On Sunday afternoons, landscape artist Betsy Craumer shares her techniques in a pastel

painting class. On Monday, mixed media artist and educator Alene Sirott-Cope leads an alcohol ink workshop. There’s a choice of two

classes on Tuesday: adult acrylic and watercolor painting. Every day, you’ll find an artist sharing a skill — creating custom ceramic tiles or learning to paint with oil like the masters — through a class, demonstration or workshop. Creative Ventures Gallery, the brainchild of Craumer, opened in July 2015 to provide a working space that would create visibility for local artists. The commercial space on Route 101A does just that, but the location is so much more than a studio or a gallery — it’s a place where artists work independently but come together for a united cause. “On any given day several artists can be found working in their studio spaces. It is nice to have other like-minds around for discussions and questions,” says Craumer, a pastel artist whose

work highlights the wonderful ability of New Englanders to coexist with nature. “We encourage each other and sometimes we help one another when we have a problem with painting. We brainstorm ideas about publicity, holding open houses and other ideas for the good of the gallery as a whole.” The location combines studio, gallery and classroom space all under one roof. Visitors are encouraged to interact with artists. They can view art — which may include oils, acrylic, watercolor, pastels or other works on paper — in gallery space that is part of each artist’s studio space. “Some paintings are sold right off the easel,” says Craumer. “I recently stopped in to Creative Ventures Gallery and was quite impressed with my discovery,” says Alicia Drakiotes. “The walls were colorful, joyfully filled with original works in many mediums, and the artists on location were cheerful

and happy to answer questions. I would encourage patrons and artists as well to drop in — maybe there is a studio space waiting just for you!” With a year under its belt, Creative Ventures Gallery currently offers six classes: pastel, watercolor, old master technique (using egg resin and tempera), drawing for adults, drawing for children, and oil painting. More are planned for 2017. “We offer something for everyone from a wonderful gallery for those purchasing art to classes for learning from the beginner to advanced artist,” says Craumer. “We have an informal setting with amazing work that always changes. We are working hard to add new paintings every day. Visitors have called us ‘a hidden gem’.” V

Derry Opera House is a wonderful place for dinner theaters, dance studios, Broadway musicals, plays, weddings, graduations … and more.

A Space for Art, Theater and Music BY SASHA WOLFE

The volunteer-run Greater Derry Arts Council (GDAC), a nonprofit incorporated in 1993, was charged by the town to restore and operate the Derry Opera House. Their goal: promote all aspects of the arts and fill the space.

Building history The red brick, two-story Colonial revival structure, built in 1904 at a cost of $10,000, was elaborate for a small town at that time. A major fire destroyed all but the brick structure in 1914 and, after a rebuild, there was another not-so-damaging fire in 1917. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. The building served as various town offices, library, police department and court. All those departments eventually moved to more fitting facilities and a $1.5 million renovation was done in 2001. The upgrades included heating, sprinkler and electrical systems, air conditioning, new elevator, dressing rooms, restrooms and ADA compliances. Today the first floor houses the GDAC and the Greater Derry-Londonderry Chamber of Commerce. The Derry Housing and Redevelopment Authority and the Derry Museum of History are in the basement, and the Derry Opera House, originally called the Adams Memorial Opera House, takes up the entire second floor. Actors have their own entrance and stairs to the stage. The green room — a place for actors to rest before, after and between scenes — is located in the old courtroom section on the first floor. There are marks on the floor where the judge’s bench used to be. There are also two dressing rooms lined with lighted makeup benches. The old dressing rooms were two stories on either side of the stage. Moving the dressing rooms downstairs allowed for a bigger stage. There are original floors in places and horsehair plaster on the walls. The theater seats about 350 with a beautiful balcony and restored seats from the Boston Opera 18

House. Projects are completed with grants and fundraising when available. One current fundraising project will be to finish a section of the balcony to bring it up to code. “It’s a beautiful space and we’re very proud of her,” says Mark Beland, president of the GDAC.

Community space The opera house provides wonderful space for many various events: dinner theaters, dance studios, Broadway musicals, plays, children’s theater, weddings, contests like the Miss New Hampshire pageant, chamber events, graduations, receptions and more. Local high schools that don’t have their own stage also use the space. “We cater to folks as much as we can,” says Beland. “Increasing occupancy of space spills out into the local economy.” One local merchant is working with other merchants to sponsor movie T H E A R TA N D G A L L E R YG U I D E . C O M

nights in the opera house. Moviegoers can visit these businesses and receipt of a purchase will allow them free admission to the next movie. Beland says what’s most fun at these events is that many often dress in costume for that show and prizes are given for the best dressed. This is a huge hit with kids. Theater performance groups usually come in on Sunday and use the week to set up and rehearse. Some of the set designs are large and detailed. The show is held on Friday and Saturday. Most seating is by general admission. Maintaining affordability is a key factor to event and performance rentals. Sound and lighting equipment is available, although groups may bring their own. There are tech guys on board to bring the space into the 21st century. All the improvements and accommodations seem to be working; last year’s occupancy was 155 performances and this year it’s up to 204. Beland is passionate about the Derry Opera House. “It’s my home away from home and I enjoy every moment being here,” he says.

During the NH Open Doors tour, you can watch artists at work, stop at farm stands, discover a new restaurant, and enjoy the scenery on back roads.

BY LAURA JEAN WHITCOMB

There’s a sandwich board sign on the sidewalk and an “open” flag on a pole waves in the wind. Flowers are blooming in a planter by the front steps. The colorful blue door invites you into the studio of artist Linda Dessaint, who greets you as you enter. She’s opened her studio and gallery for two days to anyone who wants to visit as part of the New Hampshire Open Doors spring tour. It’s the perfect time to ask her about her work — gorgeous pastels of local landscapes and oil paintings of scenes in Italy and France. You can gaze at originals, and perhaps buy one for your home. Dessaint also offers cards, 20

prints and puzzles depicting her work, small gifts perfect for an art lover. Dessaint, an artist who creates paintings from nature and life, has been participating in NH Open Doors since 2010. “I have made new friends, shared my art, and increased sales,” the resident of Antrim, N.H., says. During NH Open Doors’ first spring weekend, she had about 40 visitors, about a dozen of which were Open Door participants. NH Open Doors is a touring and shopping event that started in the fall of 2004. It grew from 60 artists participating in an open studio tour in 2007 to almost 300 artists in a statewide tour in 2016. NH Open Doors, sponsored by the League of NH Craftsman, is now held twice a year, fall and spring.

The tour is a wonderful way to showcase the creativity of the Granite State. Visitors can see the artists demonstrate their craft, take a tour, sample products and shop for New Hampshire made products. It is a self-guided event; visitors develop their own driving routes, using an interactive map on the NHopendoors.com site. “NH Open Doors gives people of all ages a chance to explore many parts of the state they may never have seen before, and gain a greater appreciation of the artisans hard at work in this state,” says Jane Oneail, executive director of the League of NH Craftsmen.
