2020
ANNUAL REPORT
We expected 2020 to be a great year.
We kicked off our programming with the presentation of the final 3 Indoor shows of the 2019-2020 season between January and March. We were on track to break records in community engagement through programs like Just Imagine, which had seen a growth rate of 357% coming into 2020.
MO Lottery Indoor Series 4 productions 39 performances 8,542 tickets sold
We planned to present a 6-show Broadway season with 3 weekend specials in our AdventHealth Broadway Series and a full summer of amazing concerts through our Capitol Federal Concert Series.
2020 became the year that defied expectations. Some people began to refer to Starlight’s 2020 as “the year that wasn’t.” For the first time ever in Starlight’s 70-year history, the 300,000 people who would normally attend a summer Broadway show or concert were unable to walk through our gates. We did not get to see our dedicated volunteers or the more than 200 seasonal employees who help us make Starlight magic. Starlight employees would plant more of Starlight’s beautiful flowers at home than at the theatre this year. The curtain would not rise to the beautiful sounds of instrumental music, singing and dancing as it had for the past seven decades.

Yet, even against odds we hadn’t invited, Starlight endured. We found silver linings in our capacity to host community blood
drives and high school graduations, and established opportunities for our employees to volunteer within our own Swope Park community.
We produced virtual victories by pivoting our largest student
engagement program, the Blue Star Awards, to an online nomination event and awards ceremony, and celebrated our place in the Kansas City community by transforming our annual fundraising gala into a virtual public event.
We responded to the rising call for social justice through
a new student performance video series and the launch of Starlight’s I.D.E.A. (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access) initiative.
We maximized our time to plan for the future through a new Legacy Society campaign and adjusted programming for Starlight’s future stakeholders in Young Friends of Starlight.
Most of all, we relished the opportunities the year’s many changes provided for meaningful conversations with all of the people who make Starlight great. We were inspired by the heroic acts of support so many of our patrons, volunteers, donors and employees provided in the spirit of ensuring Starlight will endure.
2020 defied expectations. I’m not sure I’d choose to do it again this way, but I couldn’t be more proud or grateful for how Starlight did it.

In a normal year, like many nonprofits, Starlight’s financials reflect a break-even operating budget. Starlight typically benefits from strong ticket sales and ancillary revenue from parking and concessions and has not relied heavily on charitable contributions or government support. In 2020, with all but three productions cancelled, the primary source of Starlight’s annual revenue was eliminated. Without regular programming, Starlight’s remaining expenses included the core of what sets Starlight apart: a historic landmark and its 16-acre campus; community engagement programming that pivoted time and again to continue to serve Kansas City; and the year-round full-time staff who adjusted their work to serve new initiatives and projects, sacrificed time and wages to reduce expenses, and prepared for a future that required multiple scenario considerations. Silver Linings In a Year With Many Clouds
The Starlight venue and its associates did not sit idle in 2020. As live Broadway musicals and concerts went on hiatus due to the pandemic, Starlight used its expansive outdoor and indoor spaces in nontraditional ways for the greater good of the Kansas City community. Starlight found silver linings among 2020’s cloudy days.
Blood Donors
Save Lives
Starlight, in partnership with several of its Swope Park area neighbors, answered the Community Blood Center’s emergency call for healthy blood donors. Three Swope Park Community Blood Drives – in July, September and December – were organized by Starlight and hosted in the Applause Club. Donors socially distanced in the indoor space as they made life-saving gifts of blood, filling critical needs for hospital patients locally and across the Midwest.

Blood Drive Combined Results 186 units of blood 2 units of convalescent plasma 175 registered donors 48 first-time donors 558 hospital patient lives positively affected 12 Swope Park area partners
Pomp, Circumstance & More Starlight opened its gates and outdoor seats to the newest graduates of Raytown, Raytown South and Center high schools. Three graduation celebrations on Starlight’s stage in late July brought together faculty and families to celebrate the students’ accomplishments, perseverance and aspirations for the future. Starlight also hosted a handful of other nontraditional events, including a dance recital, movie nights for constituents of the city council’s district 5 and Starlight’s young professionals group, and a private birthday party. Graduations Results 846 students, faculty and school staff 1,936 family and friends 713 attendees of other events
Growing Goodwill When nearby Covenant Presbyterian Church’s usual community garden volunteers had to stay away due to COVID concerns, Starlight staff lent a hand to help grow healthy food – and relationships – in one of Kansas City’s food deserts. On Wednesday mornings from July through early November, Starlight staff planted, weeded, watered, mowed and harvested fresh vegetables for the church’s food pantry and neighbors. 16 staff member volunteers 3 summer intern volunteers 14 weeks of service 72.5 volunteer hours

“
We are lucky to have such kind neighbors. Starlight staff stepped up in a huge way to keep the garden in, quite frankly, the best shape it’s ever been!
”
Monica Miller, MU Extension & community garden coordinator
In a multi-year effort to make Starlight more accessible for all community members, construction began in late October on Phase II of venue improvements to meet directives of the Americans with Disabilities Act. To be completed by summer 2021, this city-managed and funded project is a $3.1 million city investment that will increase and improve ADA seating locations, level walkways, upgrade sound technology, simplify directional signage, enhance backstage access and more.

Going virtual An Evening with Starlight brought unexpected victories. In lieu of Starlight’s in-person Annual Benefit Gala, Starlight broadened its reach by taking its biggest fundraiser of the year online. Showcasing Starlight’s venue and programs in new and exciting ways, An Evening with Starlight: The Sky’s the Limit debuted Saturday, October 10th on Facebook and YouTube. The one-hour program was packed with exclusive performances and appearances by more than 30 artists—Tony Award-winning® Broadway stars, an original Hamilton cast member, concert headliners, local musicians, student performers and more—each with their own special Starlight story! Free and open to the public, the event shared the magic of Starlight with an expanded audience, reminding viewers from across the nation of the power of the arts to endure and inspire in the face of challenge.

Starlight’s largest high school education program went online with big results. The 18th Annual Blue Star Awards Ceremony on July 31st capped off the year with an online celebration, sharing the event with a record audience. The reimagined event brought back program alumni to announce winners, highlighted the overall production nominees through interview segments, kept the fan-favorite lead nominee medley performances, and introduced a brand-new ceremony theme song!

An Evening with Starlight
The fight for racial justice starts with an I.D.E.A. Like many companies and nonprofits across the country, Starlight found the events of 2020 to be a catalyst for evaluating and expanding its inclusion and diversity efforts. While Starlight’s nonprofit mission includes a call to serve all audiences, Starlight developed, formalized and published a new framework for its I.D.E.A. business plan, demonstrating a commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access.
9
INCLUSION & DIVERSITY
INCLUSION
Starlight encourages an environment that welcomes, values and respects the individual differences and contributions of its employees and community.
DIVERSITY
Starlight values the unique differences of our employees and community and the ways in which those differences contribute to a richer, more creative and productive work culture and experience.
EQUITY
Starlight promotes fairness within policies, procedures, resources, programs and opportunities, which create conditions that allow all to reach their full potential.
ACCESS
Starlight provides fair and equitable access to services, resources and opportunities that are essential to achieve and maintain social, cultural and economic well-being.
Starlight Program Participants Empowered to Raise Their Voices In the early summer, with Starlight’s stage absent of its usual performers and a call for social justice rising across the nation, Raise Our Voices was born. With an objective to provide a performance platform for Starlight community engagement program participants to share their feelings surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement, the new web-based video series became one of the earliest unexpected gifts of 2020. Raise Our Voices will expand and continue in 2021 as one of Starlight’s ongoing efforts to elevate artists across our community. Students from Starlight’s Stars and Stars of Tomorrow programs submitted taped auditions in the spring, met and rehearsed using Zoom, and then gained experience performing for the camera at Starlight. Similar to theatre professionals across the country, these students received a crash course in overcoming hurdles to create musical theatre.

Interns Learn from a Summer Unlike Any Other Despite a very different Starlight summer, the Bob Rohlf Internships continued to provide college students with valuable industry experience. As departments pivoted, whether it was adapting the Blue Star Awards Ceremony to a virtual platform or refreshing the backstage areas, interns rose to their new tasks. New Partnership with UMKC Offered College Credit to High School Theatre Students New in 2020, Starlight partnered with the University of Missouri-Kansas City to offer a college credit theatre course to high school students. During the spring semester, when the college campus transitioned to remote learning, the Starlight course finished its last few weeks online and continued to offer a remote learning option in the fall. Through the class, students explored career opportunities, heard from industry professionals and learned how to pursue a career in entertainment.
One silver lining to the shift to online learning was the ability to engage out-of-town guest speakers. I was able to develop the semester around an online platform, using Zoom for the class sessions. I’m excited to continue giving high schools students an online opportunity to explore theatre industry career opportunities.

Like so many other highly anticipated Kansas City events, Young Friends of Starlight’s 5th annual fundraiser, After Hours at the Towers, was cancelled due to the impacts of Covid-19. Originally scheduled for April 24, more than 300 guests would have gathered at Starlight for a fundraiser inspired by Jimmy Buffet’s Escape to Margaritaville musical.
