2013 NCADA FAMILY CONVENTION ISSUE

Inside this issue:

JULY 2013

IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT THE TIME IS NOW -- STEADFAST AND RESOLUTE Many, many thanks to the dealers, families and sponsors who attended the St. Thomas convention in June. From the “Motorboat Regatta” to the education session to Duffy’s Love Shack...there was enough in St. Thomas to keep us all busy for a few days. I’m already looking forward to seeing everyone in Hilton Head next June! As our industry slowly rebounds from the past 5 years, there are several challenges and opportunities on the horizon that have the possibility of shaping our industry in the years ahead. First and foremost, the actions of the CFPB in Washington, DC have the ability to be a “game changer” for our industry. Just last month, several of our Congressional delegation signed a letter that urged the CFPB to increase the transparency of their actions. All in all, this is an issue that all dealers must remain attentive and ready to take action when the time comes. Secondly, the retail franchise system that has been in place for the past 80+ years is under direct attack. The actions by some manufacturers to “sell direct” could have a huge detrimental impact on the long term value of your dealership. As an industry, we must remain steadfast and resolute that the franchise retail system…and the rules that all dealers play by…continues to protect our customers, our communities, and our employees. Over the next 12 months, NCADA will be working to connect local franchised dealers to their local elected officials. From a dealership perspective, being involved in the political process can be very simple, involve a minimum amount of time and produce amazingly positive results. And most importantly, NCADA’s success over the next 20 years is a direct result of actions you take in being involved in the political process. The Time is Now to get engaged. Lastly, as Senator Harry Brown said in his message in St. Thomas, more dealers are needed in the Halls of the General Assembly. Senator Brown does a tremendous job for North Carolina and our industry…but we need additional dealers to step forward to follow in his shoes. Again, the success of our industry is at stake… Steadfast and Resolute in defending our industry is the goal. I look forward to the next 12 months as NCADA Chairman and I thank the NCADA Board, my family members and the Modern Automotive team of employees for allowing me the opportunity to “give back” to our industry. In moving forward, we must ask “do we want to drive the future of our industry? Or, do we want to be forced to react to outside challenges?” The time to drive our future is NOW!

Omnia Fowler 2013-2014 NCADA Chairman

2013 CONVENTION NCADA CELEBRATES 2013 ANNUAL CONVENTION IN THE VIRGIN ISLANDS Over 250 NCADA members made their way to sunny St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands for the 78th annual Convention which was held at the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef and Morning Star Resort. NCADA friends and family enjoyed warm hospitality from the moment they landed. This was a beautiful setting in which to conduct meetings, celebrate and honor accomplishments and network with dealers and associate members. Highlights of this year’s Convention included: • Sunset Viewing and Welcome Party featuring the band “Hurricane Bob” • Monday breakfast honoring NCADA Lifetime Achievement Winners Don Price and retired Senator David W. Hoyle Sr., and National Time Magazine Dealer of the Year Mike Alford • Motorboat Regatta to the British Virgin Islands • Celebration at Duffy’s Love Shack to honor Robert Glaser, NCADA President • Tuesday breakfast recognizing NCADA Officers and 2013 Convention Sponsors • “Maximizing Profitability with Technology” seminar moderated by NCADA Next Gen Group and featuring 5 NCADA Sponsor presenters • NCADA Family Sail & Snorkel to Buck Island • Island Shopping, Kayaking and Paddleboarding • Grand Finale Dinner featuring the band “The Lollipops” During the morning breakfast sessions, NCADA honored the hard work and achievements of our peers. Due to the Senate session, Senator Harry Brown, NC Senate Majority leader, a Jacksonville dealer and former NCADA chairman was unable to attend the convention. However, he sent a video message to encourage dealers to take part in the North Carolina legislature. Incumbent Next Gen Chairman Stewart Black passed the gavel to incoming Chairman Brian Musgrave. Additionally, sponsors exhibited at their booths and provided dealers with valuable information and giveaways. NCADA members enjoyed all that St. Thomas has to offer by land and sea while shopping, motorboat island hopping and relaxing at the spectacular Marriott infinity pool and Lazule Spa. NCADA appreciates all of the sponsors who made this year’s Convention so memorable. Our sponsors are the reason that we are able to offer such an outstanding Conventions year after year. All that we do is made possible with their support. Save the date for the NCADA 2014 Family Convention at the Westin Resort in Hilton Head Island, SC, June 22 – 24, 2014.

2013 CONVENTION With Sincere Appreciation to Natalie Tindol

DEALERS CHOICE VICE CHAIRMAN PROMOTES WORKERS COMP PROGRAM Jeff Michael, Vice Chairman of Dealers Choice Mutual, addressed attendees at the NCADA Convention to report on the company’s renewed efforts to become the premier Workers Compensation carrier for NCADA members.

2012-2013 NCADA Chairman, Natalie Tindol received a “Year In The Life” scrapbook from NCADA, featuring many memorable moments from the past year serving as our Chairman. Your vision, guidance and leadership have been invaluable. NCADA and the Dealers of North Carolina extend their sincere gratitude to you and your family, for all that you have done for our members and our communities!

“Over the past 6 months, Dealers Choice has essentially returned to its roots by focusing on the growth of its Workers Compensation Program with a strong bias toward long term profitability. During the first quarter of 2013, the company grew its surplus, improved its underwriting results by 27%, and experienced its lowest claims frequency in 6 six quarters.” By focusing exclusively on car dealers, Dealers Choice brings a level of understanding of dealer needs unmatched by its competitors. DCMI’s commitment to quality service, effective cost management, and valueadded loss control support will be the primary drivers of the company’s strategy to again become North Carolina Franchise Automobile and Truck Dealer’s carrier of choice for Workers Compensation. Mr. Michael added that Dealers Choice is proud to be a premium partner with NCADA and honored to help sponsor the convention. “We appreciate the opportunity to serve NCADA members and are very grateful for the dozens of dealerships represented in this room today that have been a part of our program’s success over the past 3 decades!” Make the Right Choice by calling Dealers Choice at 1-866810-3264.
