MAYA SANBAR QUILT PATCH

In partnership with the Chelsea Theatre and World’s End Estate, QUILT PATCH is an installation made of recycled fabrics celebrating human expressions of happiness. Taking the form of stories quilted onto flags, it hangs from the theatre’s exterior and surrounds the piazza from June to August 2022.

Artist: Maya Sanbar

Made collaboratively in crossgenerational sewing and storytelling workshops, this artwork is a reminder of the creativity, shared wisdom, unique identities, and resonant voices of the participating communities based on the theme “What Does Happiness Mean to You?”. From a bar of chocolate to holding hands, stories of joy are incorporated into individual quilt blocks that are used to create the flags and make up the installation. Together, these expressions of happiness remind us of the things that bring us joy, specific to individual identities and lived experiences.
