6 TH ANNUAL
NEW YORK CITY GALA
VETERANS, SPONSORS, SUPPORTERS & GUESTS, Thank you for joining us at the 6th New York City Headstrong Gala. The Headstrong Project was founded on the principles of providing cost-free, bureaucracy-free, stigma-free, confidential and effective mental health treatment to our deserving veterans. Six years ago, the Headstrong movement began right here, in one city by one clinician serving one veteran one therapy session. Since that time, Headstrong has grown to 21 cities with 140 clinicians serving 750 veterans with more than 18,000 therapy sessions. Our vision is to build a world-class clinical network in 50 cities by 2021, serving thousands of veterans a year to positive outcomes. Your generosity got us here, and your continued support will get us there. For this, we cannot thank you enough. We are grateful for your investment in us. Tonight, you will hear from several of our veterans to witness your return on that investment. Thank you.

Veteran, Headstrong Co-Founder and Chairman of the Board
A combat decorated former Marine officer, Zach Iscol fought in the second battle of Fallujah and later helped build many of the components within US Marine Corps Forces- Special Operations Command where he led one of the first teams to deploy. Zach also served as the first officer in charge of Recruiting, Screening, Assessment and Selection (RSAS). Zach also commanded a combined US Marine and Iraqi National Guard Unit in Al Anbar. After leaving the service, he wrote, produced, and directed “The Western Front,” a 2011 Tribeca Film Festival selection about the war in Iraq’s Al Anbar Province. A digital media entrepreneur, Zach is the founder and CEO of Grid North, a collection of the leading brands for militaryrelated content, advertising and employment. Owned and operated by veterans, its mission is to improve the lives of the military community and be its voice. Grid North properties include Task & Purpose, a digital-first media company that gives a voice and platform to the military community and is an honest broker on its behalf; Hirepurpose, the only career platform owned and operated by veterans, designed specifically for the military community; and MilSpouseLife, the modern network for military partners and families. A 2001 graduate of Cornell University, Zach was a member of the 2013 Team USA for USA Triathlon and serves on the board of advisors for the Center for a New American Security and the board of directors for the International Refugee Assistance Project.
MORAL COURAGE AWARD In the military, courage is not one dimensional. Traditionally, physical courage is widely celebrated while moral courage is often overlooked. Headstrong believes that moral courage is doing the right thing even in the face of your fears, and especially when no one is looking. Like physical courage, moral courage can be exhibited in the service of others. Tonight, we honor Connor Crehan, Kate Mannion and Matthew “Chaps” McNeely and their support of Headstrong via Zero Blog Thirty (www.barstoolsports.com/shows/ zero-blog-thirty) where they have demonstrated their moral courage at the risk of being alienated by their active and veteran peer groups. The stigma of mental health care remains a significant barrier to care for many military combat veterans and their civilian counterparts alike. Our award recipients have demonstrated leadership by taking the first step and removing the stigma. They have taken action and marched ahead to lead the military veteran community forward. They have saved lives by giving others the hope and courage they need to get help. “If not us, then who? If not now, then when?” asked American civil rights leader and Georgia Congressman John Lewis in reference to the civil rights movement of the mid-twentieth century. These words ring true today in our modern struggle to overcome the stigmas surrounding the hidden wounds of war. Headstrong is proud to honor Connor, Kate and Matthew and grateful to these three individuals for their support of Headstrong’s mission.
MORAL COURAGE AWARD RECIPIENT CONNOR CREHAN graduated from West Point in May 2006 and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. Connor remained stationed at West Point upon graduation to serve as a Graduate Assistant coach for West Point’s football team. Connor then attended and graduated from the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was sent to Fort Hood where he assumed command of a Heavy Artillery platoon as part of 5th Battalion 82nd Field Artillery Regiment within First Cavalry’s 4th Brigade Combat Team. He deployed to Iraq in June 2008 in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom where he served as a platoon leader, fire support officer, and intelligence officer. For his actions in Iraq, Connor was awarded a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal. and two Army Achievement Medals. Upon return from Iraq in June 2009, Connor was meritoriously promoted to the rank of Captain and assigned to serve as the Battalion’s Operations Officer. He later assumed a role as the Operations Officer for the Fort Hood Resiliency Center, which serviced the 50,000 Soldiers stationed at Fort Hood. After resigning his commission and leaving active duty, Connor became involved with several veterans’ organizations including Operation: Heal Our Heroes where he currently serves on the Board of Directors. Since 2016, Connor has worked alongside Chaps to co-host Zero Blog Thirty presented by Barstool Sports. In 2018, Chaps and Connor were joined on ZBT by Kate Mannion to round out their show as it is presented today.
MORAL COURAGE AWARD RECIPIENT KATE MANNION dropped out of a college with one semester left and a verrrry, very, like, verrrry low GPA to join the Marine Corps in 2008 and served two tours to Afghanistan. She was on the Marines’ first Female Engagement Team in Marjah and deployed again as a Physical Security Specialist on Camp Leatherneck. When her active duty ended, she finished school at Fordham University while participating in a fellowship with The Mission Continues which connects veterans with their communities through volunteerism. She also participated in The Daily Show with Jon Stewart’s Veteran Immersion Program and after that, knew she had to do something creative with her life. Fast forward to 2018, fellow Marine Chaps took her under his wing (not a blue falcon wing, thankfully) and she’s now a blogger, podcaster, and radio host at Barstool Sports where she covers everything from comedy to pop culture to veterans’ affairs. Having a platform where she can be open about her own life, which includes a period where she sought valuable help from The Headstrong Project, and let it be known that ‘there’s no shame to the mental health game’ has been amazing and she’s grateful for the opportunity to spread that on Zero Blog Thirty.
MORAL COURAGE AWARD RECIPIENT CHAPS MCNEALY enlisted in the Marine Corps in February of 2004 and graduated from Recruit Training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Paris Island. After finishing initial training at Camp Lejune, Fort Leonard Missouri, and Lackland Air Force Base, Chaps went to Okinawa Japan where he served as a Military Working Dog Handler. Chaps trained and operated with both drug and explosive dogs until he was deployed to Fallujah in February of 2007. Chaps was attached to 1st Recon Bn during his deployment. While in Iraq, Chaps earned the Purple Heart and Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V. After his deployment, Chaps was stationed at MCB Quantico where he became the Company Gunnery Sergeant as a Sergeant and was meritoriously promoted to Staff Sergeant. Chaps later became the Chief Military Working Dog Instructor at the Military Working Dog School. Chaps was medically retired in late 2012 due to PTSD and TBI diagnosis. Since retiring, Chaps graduated from the University of Texas San Antonio and started working for Barstool Sports where he hosts podcasts, writes articles, and creates video content.
Chris Wilson Special Guest
Chris Wilson graduated from Rutgers University in 2006 and then attended Officer Candidate School for The United States Marine Corps. Commissioned in August of 2007, Chris completed The Basic School in Quantico and was selected for Infantry Officer Course. In October 2008, Chris was assigned as a 2nd Lieutenant to Weapons Platoon of Bravo Company in 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in Camp Pendleton, CA. 1st Battalion, 5th Marines was tasked in July of 2009 with going to the district of Nawa, Afghanistan and to be part of the largest helo insertion since Vietnam. Bravo Company was assigned the most Northern area of operations for the Battalion. Upon returning from Afghanistan, Chris was provided the opportunity to become the Executive Officer of Bravo Company as a 1st Lieutenant. 1st Battalion, 5th Marines was then tasked with taking over the district of Sangin, Afghanistan in March 2011. Chris and the Battalion were tested often in a very intense 7 months of fighting with enemy forces. Chris was promoted to Captain upon his return from Sangin. He was honorably discharged from his service on February 1, 2012. Chris received his Executive MBA at Rutgers University in May 2015. While at Rutgers, Chris began to experience PTSD from his time in service. He went to 7 months of therapy under the care of Headstrong Project. After completing his therapy at Headstrong, Chris worked as the Director of Strategic Growth for the organization. Chris currently works as an Enterprise Account Executive at Sitetracker, the world’s first complete software platform for managing modern, high-volume distributed capital projects and assets. Innovators use Sitetracker to plan effectively, deploy efficiently, and grow the value of their portfolios. Chris and his wife, Sara married in 2014 and their first child, Jacob Parker Wilson, was born in 2017. The Wilson family resides in Ridgewood, NJ.
IN FLANDERS FIELDS By John McCrae In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The Larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below. The day before he wrote “In Flanders Fields” one of John McCrae’s closest friends was killed and buried in a grave decorated with only a simple wooden cross. Wild poppies were blooming between the crosses marking the graves of those killed in battle. Unable to help his friend of fallen comrades, John gave them a voice through “In Flanders Fields.” Since then, the poppy flower has been associated with remembering those who died and is worn in Britain on their Veterans Day, which is also known as Rememberance Day and Poppy Day, to commemorate those who sacrificed their lives during war.

ABOUT HEADSTRONG Coming home from war is not easy. Through a partnership with Weill Cornell Medical College, Headstrong provides cost-free, bureaucracy-free, and confidential mental healthcare treatment to Iraq and Afghanistan combat veterans. Nearly 400,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans have reported symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) in the past five years. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs estimates we lose more than 20 veterans and active duty service members a day to suicide with a 41% higher risk of suicide for deployed veterans compared to the general U.S. population. With Weill Cornell Medical College, the nation’s leading mental health care center, Headstrong developed a first of its kind, individually-tailored, comprehensive treatment program to prevent soldier and veteran suicide and treat PTSD. Since 2012, Headstrong has demonstrated a successful integrated treatment program where clients are partners in crafting their treatments with their therapists using stabilization techniques, or EMDR to process traumatic memory. They may receive individual and group therapy, as well as substance abuse treatment, and their partners may participate in a group for significant others.
The proceeds from this evening’s Gala allow Headstrong to reach veterans, help them get their lives back and become the best versions of themselves. THE HEADSTRONG COMMUNITY IS GRATEFUL FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
HEADSTRONG HAS PRODUCED STRONG POSITIVE RESULTS 75% BETTER SLEEP 83% FEWER FLASHBACKS AND NIGHTMARES 71% REDUCED HYPERVIGILANCE 68% LESS AVOIDANCE 86% REDUCED SUICIDAL IDEATION 87% IMPROVEMENT IN MOOD 77% IMPROVEMENT IN EMPLOYMENT AND/OR EDUCATION 80% DECREASED USE OF ALCOHOL AND DRUGS 67% REDUCED USE OF MEDICATION
Additionally, 97% of clients surveyed indicated their quality of life was improved by Headstrong and that they would recommend the program to a friend or family member.
Programs are based in: San Diego, Riverside County, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Houston, Chicago, New York City, Albany, Ithaca, Buffalo, Rochester, Northern New Jersey, Philadelphia, Southern Maryland, Northern Virginia, Virginia Beach, Boulder, Denver, and Colorado Springs — with plans to expand shortly to
the Pacific Northwest. We have provided more than 18,000 clinical treatment sessions and are rapidly growing.
